I have to say, I'm very disappointed everyone hasn't been gushing over our Mythical Creatures performance. I mean, the whole show was a blast (I heart Tabu and Politti especially!), but come ON. I thought Hiplash did a pretty bad-ass job. I guess not. *sniff*

What is your nickname, and how did you get it?

Everyone in Hiplash has a "Spice" name and mine is Pixie Spice. Pixie has been one of my nicknames for most of my life. I've always been petite (5' 2" on a good day) but the rest of my family is quite tall, and my mom insisted on getting me a "pixie" haircut when I was younger so I always looked like a little pixie...

Question of the Week - 6/8/08

What's the oldest thing you own, and where did it come from?

The oldest thing I own is more than a century old! It's a palm-sized book of Catholic devotions and instructions published in 1901. It's a gorgeous book with an illustrated hard cover that closes with a latch. There's a mother of pearl and gold crucifix recessed into the inside of the front cover, and the pages have a gilded edge.

It was given to me by my mother, who got it as a gift from her aunt for her first communion.

A "retreat" into the heart of the San Francisco Tribal Fusion Bellydance scene, aesthetic, music, dance, and culture.
This is not a festival per se, it's an intensive. Or immersion rather.. where you'll get individualized attention and shared group experience deepening over the course of 3- or 5 days droppin into the dance together! Come immerse yourself in the culture, the music, the bay area bohemian bellydance underworld that is shaping the tribal fusion explosion world wide. Experience where it all began. Learn from some of the pioneers in the field, meet the musicians too, who are shaping the culture and dance! , Dive in, and see how it inspires YOU! In addition to lots of technique and dance training, there are special workshops/lectures on context, history, evolution of tribal fusion bellydance, Core Yoga specifically for dancers, hang out at our local hot spots, workshops on costuming, aesthetic, creating true fusion choreography, and developing your own style, panel discussions on the collaboration between dancers and musicians, with some of your favorite musicians and dancers shaping the art form, lots of performances, and yes, even vending! by some of the bay area's hottest designers...

The Question of the Week (QOTW) for April 13 (I know, I know...I'm late) is:

What's your most irrational fear?

My most irrational fear (and I'm rather embarrassed to admit this) is the fear of...crickets! I'm not really afraid of other bugs. Even grasshoppers are okay, but crickets scare the *bleep* out of me. Just the sound of a cricket is enough to make my heart beat faster.

Okay...stop laughing! I did say "irrational" fear. Anyone else want to play?

My idea of a beautiful Saturday is one where I get to go to a BD event....and introduce some of my favorite people!!!!

Hiplash was gorgeous on Saturday. I was so grateful that I not only got to intro you hot gals, but that I actually got to WATCH you, too! YAY for emceeing.....and yay for my friend taking over my booth so that I could do it hehehe! You are all wonderful :D I missed Julia and Blume, but Hiplash still rocked my socks off :)

When did you realize that it really is "a small world after all"?

I'm not sure which happened first. It was either when I was talking to a co-worker in Phoenix, Arizona, and we discovered we had been at the same Springsteen concert in Syracuse, NY in three years earlier, or when I was talking to a different co-worker's brother (also in Phoenix), and we realized we were born in the same Orange, California hospital...within hours of each other.

New technology for the tour!

I'm on vacation for the next few days...a family reunion thing...which gives me a great chance to test out my latest toy before the Tribal Vagabond Tour in July. I'm posting this doing 55mph in the middle of nowhere, CA. Don't worry..I'm not driving!

Fair warning - Day of the Dance

Mythos kind of snuck...sneaked?...up on me with the holidays and all, but I'm on top of things now! Hiplash will be performing at Day of the Dance on February 9th. I'm not sure what time yet, but I'll keep you posted.

The MECDA Desert Communities event (formerly Dance in the Desert) will be held at the Palmdale "Chimbole" Cultural Center, 38350 Sierra Highway in Palmdale, CA from 11am-5pm, with workshops by Blue Damsel and Jeremiah Soto from 9-11am.

I know it's short notice, but tomorrow (Thursday, January 17) the ever lovely Sedona is hosting the monthly dancer showcase at Mythos in Palmdale. Hiplash will be performing along with Raqs-a-Belly Sweethearts, Pari, Alyssa, Rayanna, Lilith, and our hostess, Sedona.

If you know me, then you know that I am always wearing my MAC eyeshadow. I am one of their biggest fans, as I'm sure you all are too!

MAC Cosmetics is having a contest called "Are you an original?" I have entered the contest. We had to provide a photo that I think makes me look like an original and post a 200 character (not word) response to why I am an original.

Have you ever broken a bone....

This weeks fabulous question for the Hiplash gals is... "Have you ever broken a bone in your body?"

It gets me thinking, how many dancers break stuff? It seems that we are always stretching and preparing... but does that mean we won't break anything? How many of you have broken a bone in your body? Do you have fond memories of a purple cast... cool sharpie notes...

Here are the answers from your favorite spice girls...

Faizeh... "Amazingly enough, I've only broken my nails."

Blume Bauer... "I broke my arm on my 12th birthday. I fell off of a teeter-totter... it's a long story..."

Dana... "Yes. I broke my foot in a Moped accident and I broke my hand (boxer's fracture) while fighting when I was about 13... Okay my evil side was showing."

Trish... "Yep. I broke my nose climbing on a barstool (when I was TWO), my wrist in gymnastics, my foot in a dirtbike accident, and a couple of fingers & toes...but not at the same time."

Julia... "A couple of my toes and with how bad that hurts I am afraid to break one!"

Hiplash on Hafla World Dance!

Hafla World Dance is a wonderful cable tv show that showcases belly dancers, musicians, and other performance artists in southern California. This morning, Hiplash had the honor of appearing on the show! We danced two sets and did a little interview. Victoria is a very gracious hostess. She's so friendly and relaxed, it was easy to talk with her. We had a great time! The only bad thing was that Blume couldn't join us.

Tribal Cafe and What's next for Hiplash

Well, yesterday Hiplash danced our Moulin Rouge set at Tribal Cafe and I had such a blast!! The event was awesome and the support from the audience... WOW!! It was so amazing!!

So what's next for Hiplash?? Well, we're performing at the Antelope Valley Fair this Friday night, August 24th at 8:30 p.m. in an hour-long show with some of the local dancers from the Palmdale/Lancaster area including Desert Lotus Tribal (my other troupe).

Following that, on Friday, September 7th, we'll be performing at Froggy's with an amazing line-up of dancers including She'enedra, Alamkara, Kashmir, Subee Djinn & Heather Shoopman. The show begins @ 7:30 so be sure to arrive early for a good seat and to get your dinner.

Also coming up, Hiplash will be performing at Exotic Blend on September 21st hosted by the lovely ladies of Blue Damsel!! More details coming soon.

Hope to see some familiar faces at these upcoming events!!

In case anyone didn't realize that this is what the "little ditty" post was about...

Soooo, here's what you all (okay, maybe not "all" but *some* of you, or at least a *few* of you) have been waiting for!!!

Hiplash finally has a video on YouTube!! Yay!!!! I am so excited! The video is of our performance at the monthly showcase, TaXim in Eagle Rock, CA. It was so much fun, and I think we had a pretty good show. Solace played live music, which was amazing as usual. We even had an encore presentation after the crowd shouted for us to come back out! (well, they were shouting... hmm, maybe they were saying something else?) ;)

Hiplash to be on Moondance Belly Dance Website Soon!!

I am so excited!!

I am going to be working on Moondance Belly Dance's website, www.moondancebellydance.com , in July. We had a phone meeting and we were talking about her tribal products that she has online. She mentioned how she would love to have really "done up" tribal girls for the photos. Aha! So, of course, I offered for Hiplash (the troupe I'm in) to do some shots for her. She said yes and she is just as excited as we are! This is going to be so much fun!!

I received all the boxes of product on Friday and Saturday, of course they didn't all come at the same time because of the great USPS. But I opened the boxes, and wow!! The product is so beautiful I can hardly stand it! I just love the fabrics that she uses. She has so much great tribal stuff and one might never know it from the photos. Her beautiful, new 25 yard tye-dyed skirts are to die for! I got one in red/black. It is stunning!!! It is the most beautiful skirt I have ever owned (and we all know how much I love my turquoise skirt that I got from her too).

So, watch for our new photos on her site and for her brand new site sometime in August!! Yay!!! I *heart* Sherrie!!

New 'Question of the Day'

Ok, my question is a bit more difficult than the one I posed earlier. I think it may be a challenge to answer. And its a two-parter.
Here goes...can anyone tell me what moves are the same move but named differently? It can confuse the heck out of me when I go to another troupe or teacher or class or practice and one says 'slave walk' and one says 'Berber walk'. ( Ok I get being p.c. which personally I find a little over done.) Obviously I know those are the same, and usually I do, but then someone gives me a name and it throws me for a loop til I see it and say ooooh you mean a _________.
Second, can anyone describe moves? 3/4 shimmy. Berber walk. Toxem. Add any others you want too. I'd love to get descriptions in writing to put in my notebook for me and for any new dancers that come along!

(oh yeah, and I'm new ...I've been dancing for a while now, mostly self-taught, and in now in a troupe Folk Infusion, I live in the mountains of Eastern Northern California, the nearest large city being Sacramento, I have two kids, a husband, three parrots, two cats, and a partridge in a pear tree, I'm outspoken, political, sensitive, and am kind of a geeky type...theres more, but c'mon, gotta let you all get to know me (and I you!) as we go...)

Exotic Blend Postponed!

The whole showcase, not just Hiplash's performance has been cancelled for Friday, June 15th. Exotic Blend has been rescheduled for June 22nd (next Friday), but it looks like Hiplash may have a scheduling conflict. :( If we can work it out to be there, we will...so stay tuned!

And please help spread the word if you can so nobody drives all that way tomorrow, only to be disappointed.
