After attending The Zoe Jakes workshop on Sunday and finding that I have a lot to learn and more skills to acquire, I have been thinking about why I continue to dance.
So I thought about all the reasons I continue, even though I don't think I will ever attain celebrity bellydance status.
So here are some of the reasons why I still dance:
1) It makes me feel connected to my body in a way nothing else does
2) It makes me live in my body in the present instead of just moving it around
3) I enjoy the beauty of purposeful body movement
So why do you dance? What are your reasons for spending hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars a year on an art form so few can really earn a living from or truly master? What makes you drive for hours for workshops, spend money on costumes, music, hair, make up, and dance in less than ideal locations and situtations?

Sat, February 16, 2008 - 10:00 AMI dance because it heals and soothes my spirit. I love the feeling of mastery when a new skill is learned. I love the feeling of being in motion and acting out the music. I love the power and connectedness of dancing in a group (ATS). I love that there's a lifetime of learning ahead of me, so I'll never be bored. Bellydance music really inspires me, too.
Fabulous costuming and jewelry is a nice side effect, as well.
