Has anyone had any experience with using Henna Hair color? Were there awful results? Is there one brand that is best or ingredients to look out for? Did it cause build-up, excessive dryness or any odd textural issues? I already dye my hair a light red and have experienced hairtastrophy with harsh effects of continued dying (I cut it from below my shoulder blades to just about my ears and am in the process of regrowth). I would like to achieve pretty much any shade of a nice bright red (dark light, I don't care as long as its not mousey brown).

Re: Henna Hair Color
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 10:25 PMHere is my experience with henna. I've been using this for the past 3 years now. As you can see from my pic I have dark hair. Once the greys started sprouting I decided on the henna because my hair is thin. Years ago I tried traditional hair dyes and it fried my hair. I henna once a month. My hair now is a deep burgundy-deep dark red in the sunlight. If you use pure henna it will not dry out your hair. There are brands out there that put other stuff in there and this is where the problem lies. If you buy quality body art henna with no additives, you'll find that your hair will become silkier and shinier. The only thing that I've found that may be considered a negative (depending on how you look at it) is even though my hair is thin, it used to be slightly wavy. Since using henna it is stick straight now. That's ok with me because it's not frizzy anymore. I noticed in your pic you have lighter hair. Get a sample from Catherine (www.hennaforhair.com/samples/index.html) and use the hair left over from your brush to see if this is going to work for you. The saturation of color comes from how long you leave it in and how often you use it. At first it'll be really bright, after a couple of days the color oxidizes and settles down. This is permanent so the only way to get rid of it is to cut it out. My greys are actually pure white and the henna makes it a vibrant red (which I like). Get a sample and check it out. Check out the the site, you can achieve different colors with different natural herbs blended in. -

Re: Henna Hair Color
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 10:36 PMim definately going to try it. I read the 34 page internet book and think that henna is what I have been looking for. I hope that it does not take the curl out too much cuz I love my wave... But I started going to the hair dresser thinking that she could keep me redder than I could myself. She hasn't. I love her, she's a hoot, but my hair seems mousey brown to me a week after coloring. I think I'll try it at least once cuz if I could do it every month or every other month and keep the brilliance that would be optimum. I just got so fed up with at home dying because my hair turned to cotton candy. It was brittle and frizzy and horrible.
