MECDA Fall Festival of Music & Dance - Nov. 1

Hello Dancers,

The MECDA chapter is now taking reservations for performance spots on the festival stage. We will have ongoing entertainment from 10:30am to 5:00pm - that's a lot of dancing - come be part of it!

Soloists 5 minutes
Duet/Trio 10 minutes
Troupes 4+ 15 minutes

There will also be 7 drop-in workshops presented by instructors from throughout the state - including Yasmina!

We also need people to volunteer to help with admissions, stage managing and workshop helpers - this can be just a 1 or 2 hour stint during your day and will be greatly appreciated. It takes a LOT more than the 4 members of the MECDA chapter board to run an event like this!

NATIUM World Dance & Kahlea will be hosting 2008's Bohemian Nights, a bellydance collection. The showcase will be a monthly or every other monthly showcase of all types of bellydance. Alterna-cirque bellies WELCOME!

Shows will take place at a venue in the Tempe area and will have an oldey timey, circus side-show, exotic feel. Bellydancers of all disciplines are welcome from:

Traditional : Egyptian, Turkish, Orientale, Persian, etc...
Tribal: ATS, World Tribal, Fusion, Modern Fusion, and Goth Fusion
World dance: West African, Eastern Euro folk, Flamenco, Zambra, Folklorico
Circus/show dance: Little Egypt, Mata Hari, Aerialists, themed...

Enter another place and time where world fusion bellydance company, NATIUM World Dance, known for blending various world dance flavors with bellydance, hosts Bohemian Nights, A bellydance cirque. This showcase of talent takes place in 2008 at _________, in Tempe Arizona.
As audiences wander in they are greeted with sights, sounds and scents evocative of exotic destinations, worlds away, and of times forgotten. From the rich looking textiles and decorations from other countries, to the sounds of worlds coming together under one roof, audiences will feel as though traveling to mysterious, foreign lands. Wander through the mini bazaar to barter, haggle and bid on unique objects d'arte from artisans and vagabonds.

Each Bohemian Nights showcase kicks off with a free mini bellydance lesson to familiarize the audience with this art form and to incite excitement for the dance jam later. Then, Bohemian Nights becomes a two hour-long showcase of dancers, ranging from student performers showing off what they've learned in classes, to semi-professionals desirous of more exposure, to special professional dancer guest stars who will light up the night. Some performers will dance with props such as swords, Chinese fans, fire, veils, skirts and more. After each event, the dance floor opens up for all dancers, whether in the show or in the audience, to get up and take part in an open-floor bellydance soiree, into the night. Performers from the show come out to dance and migle with the audience and to do a meet and greet. The showcase becomes a party for all to participate.

These events are for 21 and over crowds only, as the venue serves liquor. Come hungry too as the menu has tasty treats from appetizers to delicious grilled burgers.

A portion of ticket sales will be donated to a charity or used to benefit a local business selected by NATIUM World Dance, with a different charity or business selected for each show. Raffle tickets sold will also benefit these select organizations, with all proceeds donated to that charity or business. Gratuities and tips are always appreciated, a portion of which may also be donated to the charity or business selected as well.

MECDA Pinic in Nov.? Who's in??

Hey everybody... our MECDA chapter is planning a celebration of our first year. Here's what we have in mind.....
An all day picnic at Papago Park at the ramada near the lake tentatively set for the first Sunday in Nov., including all day performances - as many as we can get - on the ampitheater stage. It's a beautiful setting and we'd like it to be a very relaxed community gathering.

The stage is about 20 x 20 but in a hexagonal shape. I think it could accomodate groups of up to 5. We'd like to the lineup to reflect the diversity of styles we have in the community and therefore want to include as many of our AZ dancers as possible.

The preliminary plans have been checked out. What we need is to know that the community is willing to come out and dance and participate. There will be no admission, but donations to defray the cost of the event will be accepted. Before we put down the money on the event and invest our time in more planning, we'd like to know that people are interested in coming out and supporting it.

In addition to dancers, we'll need some volunteers both in preparation and on the day of the event. The park has power for a sound system, but we a system to plug into it for amplified performance music. It would have been nice to include live music but the park rules don't allow live amplified music :-( - damn! I'm not sure if that excludes acoutstic instruments.

So what do you think?

Hipnotic Fusion Faire Workshop Registration!

We are asking that people pre-register for the workshops if possible. If we do not have enough pre-registrations we may have to cancel the workshops!!

Mark your calendars for Saturday March17th when Hipnotic Hips presents Hipnotic Fusion Faire. A day of workshops, shopping and evening show.

The event will be held at the Women's Club of Mesa - 200 N. Macdonald, Mesa, AZ 85201 (cross streets - University & Center)

There will be two workshops during the day taught by Teri Walden (10 - Noon) and Carrie Konyha (1 -3). Workshops will be from 10 - noon and from 1 - 3 p.m. Workshops are $20 each.

Doors will open at 9 a.m. for shopping and close at 4 p.m. to get ready for the evening show.

Doors will re-open at 6:30 p.m. and show will be from 7 - 9 p.m. Show tickets are $5 and we will be having a raffle for some very cool belly dance items.

Henna Hair Color

Has anyone had any experience with using Henna Hair color? Were there awful results? Is there one brand that is best or ingredients to look out for? Did it cause build-up, excessive dryness or any odd textural issues? I already dye my hair a light red and have experienced hairtastrophy with harsh effects of continued dying (I cut it from below my shoulder blades to just about my ears and am in the process of regrowth). I would like to achieve pretty much any shade of a nice bright red (dark light, I don't care as long as its not mousey brown).

In an effort to "help" the computer-email crash sitch, my honey did some rearranging on our computer, thus accidentally deleting my email addy book AGAIN!
Even if you emailed me your address recenlty, please resend it. I have none-not a single one for anyone.

Belly events 2007?

Time to begin planning our annual Spring Natyam is looming. Before I set any dates, I would like to know from the other belly mavens in the community what events are already planned so as to avoid a conflict of interest.
I will also check on the phx bdancer schedules tribe but figured this would reach the majority.
I am hoping for early spring again, either Jan, Feb or Mar. and I have some killer ideas for this years event to make it even more successful than last year's!

Formerly known as Domba Studio, this studio just opened its doors this weekend for the workshop extravaganza. Then come freebie "try em" classes, teasers and then the real deal. Here is what I will be teaching in case you are interested.

Students should bring/wear:
Comfortable exercise wear, water, notebooks to take notes, NO Shoes, of any kind. In hot summer months please take extra care to use appropriate hygiene so as not to offend others with odors such as perfumes, body odors, heavy patchouli, etc... Instructor will occasionally have dance supplies for sale. Payment for classes will be made to the studio at the beginning of each class. If you arrive late, please pay and sign in prior to dancing. NO cell phone use in class. Please turn your ringer off or put your phone on vibrate in case of emergencies only. Otherwise, turn it off. Thank you.

6-7pm
Swirling Skirts I - open to all levels of dancer - 16 years or older
Using your 10-20 yard skirts as a dance prop can add drama and dimension to your dance. K-Lee blends influences from Flamenco, Rom ("Gypsy"), bellydance and salsa to create a firey presentation of dance. Students will need to bring their own 10-20 yard skirt to use in class. There are 3 Swirling Skirts sessions total but you may opt to take one, two or all three. This material is from part 1.
Limit: 14 students-Main Studio

7:15-8:15pm
Fundamentals of Belly Dance- Beginners & Intermediates welcome-16 yrs or older
In this class you will tone your body by learning the basic movements for bellydance. Learn how to isolate movement in different parts of your body, as well as learn how to bump your hips, shimmy, & undulate, with bellydance drills. This class is not just great for toning, but also is a great workout! Class is perfect for students wishing to learn basics for bellydancing, and challenges the intermediate dancer with more layered moves and added accents for intensity.
Limit: 8 Students-Blue Room

8:30-9:30 pm
Stage Prep for Tribal Dancers - All lveles of dancers- 16 yrs or older
Whether preparing for student recitals, community haflas, small stages or larger presentations, you should know how to enter your stage, end songs, appropriate stage presence (it isnt ALL serious y'know!) and posture. Learn how to accept tips, dance with props (yes! we use zils to play more than just the 1-2-3 gallop!), deal with show conflicts (OMG! our music is skipping!), stage repertoire with your dance sisters, and more. This class is fun, high energy and will be challenging to get you polished to perform, whether for student activities, SCA events, or to use for auditions, this class will raise your confidence level in dance.
Limit: 6 Students-Blue Room

you girls did a lovely job at fair yesterday and we were so lucky we got to get excited for our own show by watching a dance troupe like yours before hand. it got us right in the mood, like a little pre-party! good job and it was nice to see you all. oh, and we all love the new skirts!
