According to my current way of thinking, I believe that one of the biggest and possibly most successful hoaxes in human history is the claim that HIV causes AIDS. In reality (as far as I can tell), AIDS is caused by a number of immuno-suppressant factors and HIV is not one of them. Here's where to get the details:

Re: HIV-AIDS hoax
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 10:36 AMwhat else would be the cause, Yul?
I understand that HIV-antibody presence does NOT mean you necessarily have AIDS. The real kicker is in the testing.
check this out.
the pre-test has more to do with the AIDS diagnosis than the actual test!
if you are white, low-risk, and test positive for the antibody, you probably won't be diagnoses HIV positive.
if, however, you are black, and low-risk, but show antibodies.... you get diagnosed positive.
this isn't conspiracy theory... it's fact.
<<"Up to today there is actually no single scientifically really convincing evidence for the existence of HIV. Not even once such a retrovirus has been isolated and purified by the methods of classical virology." taken from virusmyth website>>
bs. google Bovine Visna ( www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/artic...r.fcgi ) here's a decent article
the reason the 'retrovirus' hasn't been isolated and purified is because it changes over generations, which is known to happen with retrovirii (man-made virus)
a lot of people have money invested in this ... so you have to be really wary of your sources...
the real kick in the nuts comes once you've been 'diagnosed' as HIV+ .... you can be forced to take 'aids drugs' ... which are usually more harmful than the cause of the virus.
there are documented cases of children being taken from their parents (in brooklyn) and placed in 'state care' because the parents refused to give their kids azt, etc...
there are also documented cases of children who 'spontaneously heal' from aids... (meaning, they probably never had it in the first place)
so....
what is really going on here? -

Mon, January 15, 2007 - 11:50 AMso who would plant such a myth? who has to gain? AIDS does exist, that I take as a fact, - so weather it is caused by HIV or not, seems unmotivated to create a myth, or hoax if you like?!
ali, do you happen some info on the pre-test? -

There are many ways people glom onto ideas to make money, fame, etc... These pseudo-scientists stand to make massive cash from uneducated people in their time of desperation.
If you were told you had aids, wouldn't you do everything in your power to fight it? Just look closely at the links Yul posted... eventually, they all sell something.
i'll have to find my info... i thought i had it in my msn .. but its gone.

Re: HIV-AIDS hoax
Sun, January 28, 2007 - 11:19 AMI've seen it, worked with people dying from it. My brother-in-law has it (white skinned). It's very, very real. Animals have their own style of it. For example there is a similar virus which affects felines, ducks, monkeys. I have had cats that died from it and ducks. It is species specific. The most important factor to prevent the spread of AIDS is education, so people can protect themselves. Also, if someone has HIV, is diagnosed early, and has proper care, it can be managed like a chronic condition and the person afflicted may have a quality of life. It is so sad to me that governments spend billions and billions blowing each other to bits when the money would be much better spent on education and saving lives. This is the real hoax. -

Re: HIV-AIDS hoax
Fri, February 16, 2007 - 1:38 AMRosemary,
The animal models of AIDS that you cite in no way resemble human AIDS. If these animals were humans, they would emphatically not be diagnosed with AIDS, based on the same symptoms.
As I write this, I have a cat sleeping nearby who is FIV-positive. She has had casual contact with a total of two other cats in her entire life, and neither of these cats is either ill or FIV-positive. With the exception of a recent urinary tract infection, she has been in perfect health for as long as I've known her.
But wait -- a urinary tract infection might well be a sign of feline AIDS, right? Well, I'll concede that maybe it could, if you'll concede that it could just as easily be due to the fact that she's 17 years old. Have you ever seen a cat that old who *didn't* get the occasional UTI?

I do. Here it is:
www.virusmyth.net/aids/data/rgelisa.htm -- Interesting article. Did you know that everyone tests positive on the ELISA pre-test? It's true -- the difference between a "positive" and a "negative" result isn't in WHETHER you have "HIV antibodies", but in HOW MUCH "HIV antibodies" you have. If you only have a little bit of "HIV antibodies", then you're considered HIV-negative, but if you have a whole lot of "HIV antibodies", then you're considered HIV-positive. Which leaves the question: How can they be HIV antibodies if HIV-negative people have them too?
Here's a 1993 article from the Sunday Times (London), dealing with an article in the prestigious journal BioTechnology, in which it was demonstrated that HIV tests are invalid: www.virusmyth.net/aids/data/nhtests.htm
Here is an article which lists over 60 different things known to cause false positives:
www.virusmyth.net/aids/data/cjtestfp.htm
Note that many of the factors which cause false positives are either AIDS-indicator diseases, non-infectious autoimmune diseases, or factors associated with "HIV risk", such as rectally absorbed semen or blood/tissue transfusion. In other words, the correlation between a positive test and belonging to a "risk group" or having autoimmune disease may mean that the tests detect "AIDS indicators" and "HIV risks", without actually detecting HIV at all.
Here are a whole shitload of links to other articles dealing with HIV tests:

Re: HIV-AIDS hoax
Fri, February 16, 2007 - 2:34 AMooh, great! thats exactly what I 've been hoping for..! thanks.
Personally I can believe very easily that there is much confusion among the medics, common old garden variety medics, who dont have enough interest in the science part of their profession to analyse test proceedures.. and many will be influenced by the short and sweet versions of the pharmaceuticals supply leaflet. And after all, these are usually written by a marketing department, edited by the legal department, and handed out without much care for details as to why and what to look out for...
and if they wrote any of it in, then only as a legal disclaimer,- generalising all possibilities..
I am not sure if it is a deliberate hoax though,as there seems no gain, and too serious and complex a topic for someone to spread one just for a laugh.. -

Jana,
Actually, I could preach you a sermon on just who gained from it, and it wasn't one group of people, but many.
Here's the best list I can come up with in a short time:
Gay activists: Prior to AIDS, gay activists had a hard enough time raising money within the gay community, much less could they count on donations from heterosexuals and/or Christians who were indifferent or even antipathetic to them. Years before Gallo announced his "discovery" of HIV, these guys were already in the streets, protesting (with absolutely no scientific proof or qualification among them) that AIDS *HAD* to be an infectious disease. Why? Because if the public had realized the truth (that AIDS was primarily a behavioral disorder caused by too much partying and drugs,) no one would have donated to the cause, especially not those outside the gay community. How many fund-raisers for emphysema or alcoholic cirrhosis have you ever seen? Do you think such causes would make money?
Evangelical Christians: The idea of infectious AIDS served a twofold purpose for Christian Conservatives: 1) It confirmed their claims (Revelation 16) that the Apocalypse was upon us, and 2) It confirmed their claims that God hates homosexuals. If AIDS were percieved instead as a disease caused by drug abuse, then neither of these claims would have been validated, since Man invented drugs, but only God can create a virus.
Government-funded cancer researchers: By 1981, retrovirologists at the highest levels of the CDC had already wasted billions of taxpayer dollars in a futile search for a retrovirus that causes cancer in humans. About to lose their (very cush) government jobs, they capitalized on the political thrust of gay activists and Christian Evangelicals, by giving them the virus they demanded, even if it was the wrong virus altogether or even a nonexistent virus.
The Reagan Administration: Ol' Ronnie had gay activists marching on the White House lawn, chanting "Silence equals death!" He had an election coming up in only 7 months. He had to do something to shut them up, so when Bob Gallo said he'd discovered the "probable cause of AIDS", Reagan wasted no time putting him behind a podium to announce it to the world. Like Pontius Pilate, he gave the mob what they wanted and washed his hands of the consequences, winning re-election by a landslide that very November.
Condom companies: With the advent of safer birth control pills, most heterosexuals had quit using condoms, and homosexuals hadn't been using them to begin with. Sales were down, and something had to be done. Even before Gallo announced that a virus had been discovered which was blamed for AIDS, they were already advertising that their product *might* protect against AIDS. Since that time, both heterosexuals and gays have begun using condoms even more than they did when they were merely used for contraception.
Pharmaceutical companies: I cannot say anything about these crooks that has not already been said, therefore I shall simply remind you that in 1987, they prevailed upon the FDA to streamline the approval procedures for HIV drugs in order to rush AZT to market. Since that time, they no longer have to "waste" R&D money to prove that these drugs are either safe or effective -- all they have to do is prove that the drugs are capable of temporarily altering the readings of non-specific "viral load" tests. As a result, anti-HIV drugs are the most profitable (and the most deadly) class of drugs in the history of modern medicine.
For what it's worth, though, I don't believe it was a deliberate hoax -- that is, I don't believe it was a conscious conspiracy. I think, rather, that it was a conspiracy of common interest.
I am the author of a little-known principle that I call the Heretic's Law of Scientific Evidence, which states that the amount of proof required to support a hypothesis is directly proportional to the vested interests of scientists and others who stand to lose by the hypothesis in question, and inversely proportional to the vested interests of scientists and others who stand to gain by it.
For example, long ago, doctors used to con rich men into paying them to fingerfuck their wives, as treatment for a dreaded disease known as "feminine hysteria". Today, it is well-known that this disease was nothing more than ordinary feminine horniness, but at the time, it was believed to be a very serious disorder.
Now, I don't believe for a second that these doctors were aware that they were perpetrating a scam. I honestly believe that each and every doctor who treated a woman for "hysteria" honestly believed that he was performing a valuable service to the community.
However, it is worth noting that each and every doctor who treated "hysteria", did so without a shred of concrete scientific proof that the disease actually existed. No such proof could possibly have existed, since no such disease exists.
So why would so many respected doctors be so easily convinced of the existence of this "disease", without any proof? It's really quite simple: They were making money fingerfucking rich guys' wives. Who cared if the medical theory under which they practiced was scientifically bankrupt?
Which, again, is not to say that they were aware that they were practicing fraudulent medicine under color of a false hypothesis, but rather to say that they made it their business to be unaware of this fact.
So, ultimately, no, I don't think that this is necessarily a *deliberate* hoax, in the sense that those who have perpetrated it did so with full awareness that they were perpetrating a hoax. I think, in fact, that many of them had the best of intentions. It's just one of many dozens of examples I could cite of the Heretic's Law of Scientific Evidence in action.

HIV/AIDS lying on its stomach
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 9:13 PMApproaching this from the other way around offers more insight than working with misinformation as if it were fact.
This is the 3rd "retrovirus" that was identified in the early '80s. The other two also involved immune system cells. Leukemia for instance is hypothesized to be caused by HTLV (a retrovirus).
I believe that the most likely reason(s) this "HIV" was first hypothesized to be a "retrovirus" was:
- "it" was invisible or at least very hard to find
- "it" involved DNA, as do viruses
- "it" made people "sick" (as opposed to left handed or a Pisces)
Why did the hypothesis become an established fact? ?
Viruses (even retro ones) use cellular functionality to "replicate" themselves. This is about all a virus does: it enters a host, it has its DNA replicated, it has some simple vector proteins produced. At some point these foreign entities leave the cell. They probably suffocate it to death, then the immune system "cleans up" the dead cell allowing the viruses to escape.
All of this is [relatively] mutually exclusive of the cells own DNA. Stray DNA doesn't just hop in and become "endogenous", hidding out and occasionally being expressed. That is a parasitic concept. Viruses are not parasites. They haven't the need or where-with-all to incorporate themselves into the hosts biological functionality.
Here is an analogy for you:
Bad, very BAD!!!
----
I would hypothesis the mechanism of HIV/AIDS is one similar to fragile X. There are triplet repeats that slowly expand until cell function is dead. The use of a protein with a triplet repeat in its code causes the expansion, this is why T-cells are so effected. True, there are deleterious mutations that may exist in other genetic immunoglobin codes, but these do not cause the colapes of an entire white blood cell type (which would be a condition ala AIDS).
I think there are researchers, scientists, some medical professionals, gurus and sectors of the general population who are aware of this. It is not difficult to come to the conclusions that I have come to. OK it may be difficult, but on the research warpath . . . HIV/AIDS makes a lousy thesis.
Why does misinformation still exist? I don't know.
Misinformation can appear to be covert guidance sometimes. It would be very bad practice, so why we choose to continue this misinformation is a riddle. From a publichealth standpoint, it is to shoot ones own self. This really is a just broadening the spectum in the continuum of fallacy.
See, anyother scientific field (Cold Fusion for instance) would have been so aggressively attacked at the professional level until school of thought -- not reputation -- gave clowns little chance in the public eye. Not this one, however.

Robert E. Wilner, author of "Deadly Deception: The Proof that Sex and HIV Absolutely do NOT Cause AIDS"(www.amazon.com/Deadly-Dec...171-1499324 was so confident in his belief that he injected himself deliberately with the the blood of HIV-positive hemophiliac Pedro Tocino on live television in Spain. Wilner never himself developed HIV infection or AIDS as a result.
Currently, there is an appeals hearing going on in Adelaide, Australia, in the case of Andrew Chad Parenzee, for criminal transmission of HIV. The defense maintains that HIV has never been proven to exist, much less cause AIDS. One defense witness was Dr. Eleni Papadapolus-Eliopolus, who was asked whether she herself would have sex with an HIV-positive man. "Any time," she replied.
AIDS activist Christine Maggiore's husband, Robin Scovill, has unprotected sex with his HIV-positive wife, and neither of them have AIDS, 15 years after she was diagnosed HIV-positive.
In Padian et al (1997), 175 serodiscordant couples were studied for a total of 282 couple-years (the statistical equivalent of one couple having sex for 282 years), and 25%-75% were not using condoms (75% at the beginning of the study, 25% at the end,) and in the entire group, not a single HIV-negative spouse contracted HIV as a result of sex with their infected partner.
On a more personal note, my own girlfriend has unprotected sex with an HIV-positive man (me) on a frequent basis, because she doesn't believe that HIV is the cause of AIDS. As yet, she is still healthy.
I also knew a man who died from AIDS (actually he died from liver failure from the meds, but they *called* it "AIDS"), whose widow claims that God promised her that if she married him, she could have all the unprotected sex with him that she wanted, and she'd never get AIDS. After his death, his widow remains HIV-negative.
I also met a bug chaser shortly after I was diagnosed HIV-positive, who claimed that he'd been actively trying to get HIV for 13 years, without any success.
So, in answer to your question, there are many who are willing to stop "protecting" themselves from HIV, because they aren't afraid of it -- many of them don't even believe it exists, and that what they'd really be "protecting" themselves from if they used condoms, is intimacy, pleasure, and sponteneity (which are the only things that condoms are 100% effective at preventing anyway.)

Re: HIV-AIDS hoax
Sun, February 25, 2007 - 7:46 PMHIV, the so-called "Human Immunodeficiency Virus", is defined as a retrovirus that causes AIDS, though mainstream scientists admit they have no idea how it does it. It was once supposed that it killed CD4 cells (in a process known as "lysis"), but this didn't prove true. In fact, Dr. Robert Gallo, the co-discoverer of HIV, himself has admitted that HIV doesn't infect more than 1% of an AIDS patient's CD4 cells, which means that it couldn't possibly be responsible for the destruction of the other 99%.
The most popular hypothesis today is known as "apoptosis", or programmed cell suicide. Again, because HIV doesn't infect more than 1% of an AIDS patient's CD4 cells, this is impossible, unless we are to assume that HIV is the Hannibal Lecter of the microbiological world -- able to hypnotize your CD4 cells and cause them to hang themselves from the rafters at a later date, cut off their own faces, and feed them to the dogs.

Retrovirus
Mon, February 26, 2007 - 12:28 AMhmm, there is much here I dont quite understand, but I did pick out the line that if the retrovirus has reproduced itself incomplete, then it creates "junk DNA" ?, which would go with the info about only 1% produceing lysis.. no?!
-Is there a doctor in the house? I am soo confused...
ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrovirus
>>>The virus itself stores its nucleic acid, in the form of a +mRNA (including the 5'cap and 3'PolyA inside the virion) genome and serves as a means of delivery of that genome into cells it targets as an obligate parasite, and constitutes the infection. Once in the host's cell, the RNA strands undergo reverse transcription in the cytosol and are integrated into the host's genome, at which point the retroviral DNA is referred to as a provirus.
[edit]Reproduction
When retroviruses have integrated their genome into the germ line, their genome is passed on to a following generation. These endogenous retroviruses, contrasted with exogenous ones, now make up 8% of the human genome. Most insertions have no known function and are often referred to as "junk DNA". However, many endogenous retroviruses play important roles in host biology, such as control of gene transcription, cell fusion during placental development in the course of the germination of an embryo, and resistance to exogenous retroviral infection. Endogenous retroviruses have also received special attention in the research of immunology-related pathologies, such as autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, although endogenous retroviruses have not yet been proven to play any causal role in this class of disease. The role of endogenous retroviruses in human gene evolution is explored in a recent peer-reviewed article. abstract.
While transcription was classically thought to only occur from DNA to RNA, reverse transcriptase transcribes RNA into DNA. The term "retro" in retrovirus refers to this reversal (making DNA from RNA) of the central dogma of molecular biology. Reverse transcriptase activity outside of retroviruses has been found in almost all eukaryotes, enabling the generation and insertion of new copies of retrotransposons into the host genome. It is important to note that a retrovirus must "bring" its own reverse transcriptase in its capsid, otherwise it is unable to utilize the infected cell's enzymes to carry out the task, due to the unusual nature of producing DNA from RNA.
Because reverse transcription lacks the usual proofreading of DNA replication, this kind of virus mutates very often. This enables the virus to grow resistant to antiviral pharmaceuticals quickly, and impedes, for example, the development of an effective vaccine against HIV.
Retrovirus genomes commonly contain these three genes, among others, that encode for proteins that can be found in the mature virus:
group-specific antigen (gag) codes for core and structural proteins of the virus;
polymerase (pol) codes for reverse transcriptase, protease and integrase; and,
envelope (env) codes for the retroviral coat proteins.
Thus far, four human retroviruses — HTLV 1 and 2, in conjunction with HIV 1 and 2 have been found to attack Helper T cells.
Studies of retroviruses led to the first demonstrated synthesis of DNA from RNA templates, a fundamental mode for transferring genetic material that occurs in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. It has been speculated that the RNA to DNA transcription processes used by retroviruses may have first caused DNA to be used as genetic material. In this model, cellular organisms adopted the more chemically stable DNA when retroviruses evolved to create DNA from the RNA templates.[citation needed]<<<<< -

Re: Retrovirus
Mon, February 26, 2007 - 1:51 AMJana,
Actually, you're making it much more complicated than it really is (though you can't be blamed for that -- I personally think that scientists deliberately make science needlessly confusing.)
What the article is saying is that about 8% of the human genome is made up of what are called "endogenous" retroviruses -- these are basically retroviruses that you got from your mother and she got them from her mother and so on, these retroviruses having become inserted into our genes many generations ago.
Nobel laureate Dr. Kary Mullis rejects the "junk DNA" hypothesis of retroviruses. He says he's inserted meaningless DNA into the nuclei of amoebas in the lab and his obervation has been that the amoebas reject any genetic material that serves no purpose. Therefore, it is his belief that retroviruses serve some purpose that we as yet do not fully understand. Indeed, as the article you cited points out, "many endogenous retroviruses play important roles in host biology, such as control of gene transcription, cell fusion during placental development in the course of the germination of an embryo, and resistance to exogenous retroviral infection."
Now, looking at the Wiki article, look at that big word right above the paragraph you cut/pasted: "Reproduction" In other words, that entire section is about the reproductive cycle of retroviruses.
Now, you already know how normal viruses reproduce, right? They integrate themselves into the cellular DNA, reprogramming the nucleus to manufacture more copies of the virus, then the new virions burst forth from the nucleus, killing the cell, in a process known as "lysis".
Considering this, I want you to re-read that segment of the article. Then I want you to re-re-read it, then I want you to re-re-re-read it again, and find anywhere that it says that the retroviral reproductive cycle involves killing the host cell. What's that? You can't find it? Things that make you go "hmmmm....."
Wanna know a dirty little secret about retroviruses? They don't kill their host cells. In fact, it would be suicide for a retrovirus to kill its host cell, since retroviruses, by definition, are dependent upon the continued survival and replication of their host cells, for their own continued survival and reproduction. A retrovirus may or may not be symbiotic with its host cell (in other words, it may or may not provide some benefit to its host,) but the retrovirus that kills its own host cell would be the ultimate candidate for the Darwin Award.
In fact, it was for this reason that scientists began looking so hard at retroviruses as a possible cause of cancer. Cancer is a disease in which cells reproduce too rapidly, and so it was thought that since retroviruses are genetically dependent upon their host cells' replication, that it would be of genetic advantage to a retrovirus to cause its host cell to reproduce to excess.
Unfortunately, this hypothesis was a failure, but this did not stop retrovirologists at the CDC from making money by the truckload, in Nixon's War on Cancer.
By the time Ronald Reagan took office in 1980, it was becoming obvious that the cancer angle was a dead end, and that if the CDC's retrovirologists wanted to continue to earn those truckloads of money, they'd have to come up with *some* disease, *any* disease, that they could blame on a retrovirus. After all, "CDC" doesn't stand for "Center for useless investigation of interesting particles", it stands for "Centers for Disease Control". If retroviruses couldn't be claimed to cause *some* disease, therefore, they were gonna find themselves experiencing Ronnie's "Workfare" program firsthand.
Just about that time, a bunch of gays who'd been living a "fast-track" lifestyle which included extremes of drug abuse, and who'd abused antibiotics in the pursuit of a promiscuous lifestyle, started dropping dead of this mysterious autoimmune deficiency syndrome, and when anyone had suggested that it might have been related to their lifestyle rather than being an infectious disease, they'd get a bucket of blood dumped on them by these gay activists who insisted that AIDS *had* to be an infectious disease (it just had to -- no one makes big donations for diseases of drug abuse like cirrhosis or emphysema or non-infectious hepatitis -- they only donate if you can make them afraid that the disease will strike them next, and that requires an infectious cause.)
So Ronnie's got all these gay activists marching on the White House lawn, demanding that Reagan acknowledge the infectious nature of AIDS, and meanwhile these CDC retrovirologists are about to lose their jobs if they can't come up with some disease that they can blame on a retrovirus. Whatever, oh whatever was to be done to resolve both of these crises, with only months to go before the 1984 election?
The rest, as they say, is history...

Re: Retrovirus
Tue, February 27, 2007 - 12:25 PMAIDS is not a hoax, it is a very real disease. It is a very real threat to our species.
An overwhelming majority of scientists, doctors, researchers, etc . . . agree that HIV causes AIDS, they consider it proven beyond all doubt. If that's good enough for Global Warming, why is it not good enough for AIDS?
The AIDS conspiracy theorists have been consistently disproven and discredited by the scientific community at large. They use outdated sources, they cherry-pick their data, they make unfounded claims, they rely too much on testimonials, etc . . . , they engage in pseudoscience. Many scientists who once sided with them have since changed their minds and distanced themselves from that movement. Early on in the epidemic there were serious questions about the nature of HIV and the cause of this horrible disease and a bunch of other important details, but those doubts have been cleared up by subsequent research. I'm not going to pick apart the specific arguments here one by one - you found the conspiracy websites on your own, you're perfectly well-equipped to now go find the truth on your own.
Scientists are not all under the control of some evil manipulative force. Some of the conspiracy claims I see people making, about how ALL doctors or ALL scientists just blindly follow some "expert" without questioning anything themselves, well it's clear these people don't know what the hell they're talking about. SOME scientists & doctors are like that, but certainly not the entire international community at large! Pay attention to some real scientific debates between experts and you'll see how independent-minded these people really are.
Before modern science, "truth" and "knowledge" was determined by a variety of factors: social & cultural pressures, politics, religion, emotion, personal greed, and so on. Modern scientific practice certainly has not eliminated those contaminants from the pursuit of knowledge, but it's a hell of a lot better than the old ways! True scientific pursuit requires the ultimate in open-mindedness. You'll have to look just a little farther than your conspiracy websites.
The way I see it, conspiracy hypotheses fall into 3 categories:
1) hypotheses that are true, or close enough. Example: BushCo cherry-picking data to go invade Iraq.
2) hypotheses that are not true, but do serve to expose important questions and spur further research. Example: perhaps some of the earlier questions about HIV & AIDS, some (not all) of the 9-11 conspiracy ideas.
3) hypotheses that are so outlandish that they only serve to expose just how twisted or paranoid the theorist is. Example: God Hates Fags - if you don't know them, look 'em up.
Conspiracy "theories" (they're actually just hypotheses) like these are appealing for a number of reasons:
-People feel like they've stumbled onto some sort of dangerous, new, forbidden knowledge, and that they are among the few who really know the truth. "Everyone else is just sheep, except me, I know what's REALLY going on!" They make people feel just a little more special, a little more smart, a little more important than they would otherwise feel. People also now have a new group of cohorts, a new social group of "like-minded enlightened folks" that they belong to.
-They offer an alternative. We like choices. We like alternatives. Evolution, or Creation Science; well, you have a choice there, so take your pick!
-People feel like they've beaten "The System" in some way. "The System" is vast, controlling, overwhelming, and oppressive, and any little thing we can do to get a leg up, an advantage, or to undermine "The System" is very appealing.
-They play into a common paranoia that "The System" is bigger and much more powerful than it really is. Exactly how big and pervasive and powerful "The System" really is is a subject of debate (and it's different for different "The System"'s at different times). Conspiracy theories often "solve" that debate by inferring that "The System" is indeed as big and pervasive and evil as your imagination will allow you to perceive. (after all, it really is like that in some places, like North Korea) But hey, you just found a crack in their armor, you just found their weak spot, so there's still hope!
-They don't require you to really do a lot of difficult research, sorting out confusing and difficult data and competing explanations, you don't have to do all the hard mental work, it's all laid out for you, right there on the webpage, plain as day, simple as 1-2-3. You don't really even have to think for yourself, because they guide you thru the difficult reasong process. You certainly don't have to "blindly accept the "official explanation"", because you can just blindly accept theirs. Even better yet, you don't have to study Biochemistry or Science or Medicine or any of those other difficult specialized demanding disciplines for years like all the "so-called experts". You just have to read the website and suddenly you know more than people who have been working in a specialized field for their entire lives. That's right, just by visiting WWW.AIDSCONSPIRACYHOAX.COM you're now smarter than all those thousands of MD's and PhD's around the globe who've been working with HIV and treating AIDS patients for the past 15-20+ years! Imagine that, you're now smarter than all of them! What a great website! Hell, they should just give YOU a PhD., in gullibility!
Please, PLEASE, seek out some more knowledge before you hurt yourself or someone else!! -

Re: Retrovirus
Tue, February 27, 2007 - 12:46 PMTed,
Now that you've told us WHAT you believe, and took so many paragraphs to do so, would you mind taking at least a paragraph or two to tell us WHY you believe:
1) AIDS is a very real threat to our species, when traffic accidents kill 3x more Americans than AIDS, and no one is saying that traffic accidents are a threat to our species.
2) That the "AIDS conspiracy theorists", as you call them, have *ever* been disproven, much less consistently. Can you cite even one example?
3) That I didn't do the very "different research, sorting out confusing and difficult data and competing explanations" that you say is the only way to know the truth. Can you prove to me that you HAVE done the required mental legwork, where I haven't? Can you prove to me that you even know half as much as I do about AIDS? You're awful quick to accuse someone else of intellectual laziness, but in your 10,000 word manifesto on "conspiracy theorists", you did not offer a single example of any claim I or any other AIDS dissident has ever made which has actually been disproven, though you claim that we dissidents have been extensively and consistently discredited. If this is so, WHAT has been disproven? Name one example, oh Great Master of Research.
...You'll forgive me if I don't hold my breath while waiting...

Re: Retrovirus
Tue, February 27, 2007 - 12:54 PMactually ted, I am finding it hard to find scientific data which is understandeable to a lay person.. I am already stumbling at the definition of a retrovirus.
where do you have your scientific knowledge from? -

I know of a great number of articles, ranging from the layperson's level of comprehension all the way up to the virologist's level. Name a question you have and I can find you several articles on it, many of them from the mainstream medical literature.

Wed, February 28, 2007 - 2:54 AMliberrian, would that be the town in costa rica, or the country in africa?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberia ??
no seriously, can you point me to a site which explains a retrovirus to me ?, for starters.
the wiki article posted before is confusing and unclear.. thanks. -

Wed, February 28, 2007 - 3:43 PMJana,
Unfortunately, good information about retroviruses that is accessible to laypeople is pretty hard to come by. I was able to find the following at Stanford, though:
www.stanford.edu/group/nol...rials.html
Here's something a bit more advanced:
www.retrovirology.com/content/1/1/9
www.duesberg.com/books/ch1-2.html

Re: Retrovirus
Thu, March 1, 2007 - 1:03 PMHello all. Gos, I hope you didn't hold your breath too long, I've been fighting a cold. Anyways, let's get started.
One more thing I should have listed in my conspiracy myth diatribe is that sometimes people go for conspiracy theories because something is truly wrong with the “official” explanation, or some of the “officials” either don’t know themselves or they fuck up badly. The early days of the AIDS epidemic were confusing and terrifying for millions of Americans: first the medical community was wrong about exactly how contagious HIV was, and then they inadvertently gave it to thousands of hemophiliacs and other patients. So naturally, many people grew suspicious and lost trust in the establishment.
In direct response to some of the things that Gos has posted here:
"Wilner never himself developed HIV infection or AIDS as a result."
That's because he died of a heart attack 6 months later, that's why he never developed AIDS.
"though mainstream scientists admit they have no idea how it does it [how HIV causes AIDS]"
You don't need to know the exact mechanism in order to prove causation. PLENTY of pathogens have been correctly implicated in various diseases without researchers figuring out every detail of their precise mechanisms.
“1) AIDS is a very real threat to our species, when traffic accidents kill 3x more Americans than AIDS, and no one is saying that traffic accidents are a threat to our species.”
Traffic accidents do not spread from person to person the same way that infectious diseases do. The two are completely different problems and it makes no sense to try to compare them that way. By the way, in Africa AIDS kills more people than traffic accidents.
You mentioned Christine Maggiore and her husband as examples of healthy people with HIV:
Christine Maggiore gave birth to an H.I.V.-infected daughter, Eliza Jane, who acquired an AIDS-related infection and died at age 3.
Lots of people with HIV have been living very healthy lives, 15+ years or so after infection, even before the new retroviral therapies, without AZT. Doctors know that poz’s can, thru healthy choices, stave off the effects of the virus, though it is unclear for how long because some of these people eventually do get sick.
You mentioned the Padian study, one of the most often misunderstood by the AIDS conspiracy theorists. Here’s what Ms. Padian herself has to say about all this:
“In short, the evidence for the sexual transmission of HIV is well documented, conclusive, and based on the standard, uncontroversial methods and practices of medical science. Individuals who cite the 1997 Padian et al. publication (1) or data from other studies by our research group in an attempt to substantiate the myth that HIV is not transmitted sexually are ill informed, at best. Their misuse of these results is misleading, irresponsible, and potentially injurious to the public.
A common practice is to quote out of context a sentence from the Abstract of the 1997 paper: "Infectivity for HIV through heterosexual transmission is low". Anyone who takes the trouble to read and understand the paper should appreciate that it reports on a study of behavioral interventions such as those mentioned above: Specifically, discordant couples were strongly counseled to use condoms and practice safe sex (1,12). That we witnessed no HIV transmissions after the intervention documents the success of the interventions in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV. The sentence in the Abstract reflects this success -- nothing more, nothing less. Any attempt to refer to this or other of our publications and studies to bolster the fallacy that HIV is not transmitted heterosexually or homosexually is a gross misrepresentation of the facts and a travesty of the research that I have been involved in for more than a decade.”
Some of the AIDS conspiracy claims can be disproven by simply trying to reconcile what they say about AIDS with what has actually happened with the epidemic:
As far as the idea that the AIDS drugs themselves cause the disease - people are now living much longer than before, on average, with the new retroviral drug therapies than people who did not or do not have access to these therapies. There are thousands of people in Africa, sick with AIDS, who have never even seen an anti-retroviral drug or AZT as they are too poor to access decent medical treatment, so the drugs can't possibly be causing their illness. First the conspiracy theorists said it was AZT – early in the epidemic the higher dosages of AZT did cause problems for some people. Even so, however, studies still showed that AZT helped people.
Illegal drug use? Drug use does not cause the catastrophic immune system collapse that characterizes AIDS. There are people using drugs who do not have AIDS, and there are many people who have AIDS who do not use drugs. Drug use and unhealthy lifestyles had been around for many years before the discovery of HIV/AIDS, so why did the earlier drug-abusers not get sick with AIDS? Why did they only start getting sick with AIDS once the HIV virus showed up? NO study has EVER proven the causation of AIDS by illegal drug use, not one! It’s an interesting hypothesis, but simply not true. It also would not explain the disease in poor Africans. What does explain the disease in Africans is this: people with HIV develop AIDS, and people without HIV do not develop AIDS.
Some other people making money off of AIDS:
Some well-known AIDS conspiracy theorists, such as Rasnick and Rath, are now working for a multinational vitamin company that’s promoting vitamin therapy to cure AIDS. Who’s making money there?
More examples of how the AIDS conspiracy theorists are full of shit:
-There's a large and growing body of evidence that proto-oncogenes actually do contribute to some cancers; this contradicts Duesberg's earlier claims to the contrary.
-The conspiracy theorists claim that the HIV/AIDS connection does not satisfy Koch's postulates, even though it is clear that Koch's postulates are satisfied.
-Laboratory tests show HIV infecting the very same cells (the CD4 Lymphocytes) that are depleted in people who have AIDS.
Gos, if you're really the librarian you said you were, then I'm sure you won't have much trouble finding PLENTY of original sources for all of these, outside of virusmyth.com, that is . . .
And, in response to your #3:
“3) That I didn't do the very "different research, sorting out confusing and difficult data and competing explanations" that you say is the only way to know the truth. Can you prove to me that you HAVE done the required mental legwork, where I haven't? Can you prove to me that you even know half as much as I do about AIDS? Clearly you haven't done the research because you've already mentioned a number of things in your own manifestos here that are either irrelevant, illogical, or completely wrong. You mentioned that Willner "never developed AIDS" - well he died of a heart attack before AIDS would have shown up! You tried to compare a disease epidemic to car crashes! Look, the information is out there, and it's obvious to anyone who is capable of thinking clearly and scientifically. You obviously have not done the research and mental legwork because you're only choosing to believe the limited resources that back up your points; you're ignoring the overwhelming body of evidence and scientific opinion about this topic. You brush off anything that contradicts what you think as some sort of conspiracy or mind control or some confluence of evil or unenlightened forces. You haven’t done the research because you still don’t see the one key scientifically unambiguously consistently proven fact: HIV causes AIDS! Maybe I won't convince you, maybe you're too brainwashed already, but hopefully the other people here will read this thread and will see what’s going on with the illogical claims of HIV-deniers.
And Gos, you said you’re HIV+. I sincerely hope that you never ever get sick with AIDS, and I hope that your girlfriend doesn’t either. I hope that you’re one of those lucky people who just keep living year after year without getting sick. I hope that if you do get sick you seek out the proper treatment. And I sure as hell hope that you don’t ever give this virus to anyone else! -

Once upon a time the overwhelming consensus of scientists, physicans, and researchers was good enough for the flat-earth theory, the existence of vampires, and the "scientific fact" (circa 1760-1910) that masturbation caused all manner of disease, including blindness.
So if the overwhelming consensus of a majority of scientist, doctors, and researchers, etc, is not enough to prove that the earth is flat, that vampires exist, or that masturbation causes blindness, then why is it good enough for AIDS *OR* global warming?
For that matter, asking an HIV researcher whether HIV causes AIDS is a bit like asking a priest whether God exists, isn't it? I mean, really, do you expect any other answer from a man whose livelihood depends on the statement in question being true?
Ted wrote: "They use outdated sources, they cherry-pick their data, they make unfounded claims, they rely too much on testimonials, etc."
You've been to AIDSTruth.org, haven't you? Good, because now that you've chosen to tapdance through the minefield I just laid for you, prepare to get creamed.
Ted wrote: "True scientific pursuit requires the ultimate in open-mindedness."
Yes, Ted, it does. With that in mind, I hope everyone here has their mind wide open -- at least as wide open as Ted's nether regions are about to be.
Ted wrote: "...first the medical community was wrong about exactly how contagious HIV was"
Now THAT's the understatement of the century.
Ted wrote: "Wilner never himself developed HIV infection or AIDS as a result.'
That's because he died of a heart attack 6 months later, that's why he never developed AIDS."
Aaaah, but I didn't say he "never developed AIDS", I said he "never ... developed HIV INFECTION or AIDS..." Do my ears detect the sound of cherries being picked? Oh, it's you, Ted, and you know what I'm gonna have to do to your cherry now that I caught you picking my cherries, right?
As everyone knows, it only takes 3 months to seroconvert, and he was tested, wasn't he? What was the result again? Hmmmm...could it be .....NEGATIVE? Let's see -- this guy injects pure HIV-tainted blood into his veins -- not a mixture of I
