The body's desires

I find myself dancing sometimes as I move around the house, doing housework, cooking, doing laundry, etc. I like to have music on (it keeps me going) and sometimes my body just desires to move.

Today, I woke up with a pain in my lower back and right hip. I had fallen asleep last night in an awkward position. I had a lot of work to do today, and was feeling it.

At one point, my body really wanted to do figure-eight's of the hips, over and over again....though fairly gently. I surrendered to the feeling and danced for about 10 minutes...just figure eight's.

My back and hip haven't bothered me since!!!

Also, my body has wanted to do stomach rolls when I was having some digestion problems. It did help.

The body's wisdom is amazing!

I find myself doing figure-eights without knowing it when I am out and about in public. I'll be standing in line and I just start moving. I have found that movement to align my sacrum and lower back which I have issues with. Especially if I'm tired and have been on my feet or sitting for too long. So it has become a subconscious movement within me when I need alignment! Hooray for second nature bellydancing in the grocery store! haha

    how amazing!
it's so valuable to learn what benefits the moves have on other dancers!

I have noticed myself craving for chest/rib cage circles and chest lifts/locks when I am sad or hurt.
Other times when I am agitated or angry my body is craving for head tossing/swinging in Khaleegi style.
After doing so for minutes, I feel a release and bliss!

I know, this thread got me to thinking, we all began bellydance for different reasons, but something about the movements kept us involved. I believe our body craves the movements it needs (how yoga supposedly started, and probably bellydancing too).

I forgot to mention I did a series of articles on chakra energy related to bellydancing, there's several short articles starting here:
      www.kawakib.com/articlesZAG31.html

I did a lot of research on that subject then as it became extremely interesting given the events in my life just prior to that - so I was searching for "why"? it's really fascinating subject -

Anthea, your post is the first I've heard of using dance to work thru chakra balancing but it makes perfect sense! Does anyone know of any routines or regiments?

I saw a clip of a practice DVD for it on u-tube. www.youtube.com/watch

      Has anyone used it?

Any other DVD suggestions for this type of focus?

one of my former students introduced me to it, she lives in HI now: www.cinnamon-phoenix.com/chakras.html
She began exploring this concept on her own years ago (I love it when a student teaches me something new!!).
She's busy with a new baby at the moment, but it would be great if she put out a dvd.
re the new york dvd, looks like a case of great minds thinking alike at the same relative time, as so often happens.

It's pretty simple really, you use circular movements at the chakra levels, which is not exactly the same parts of the body we're used to focusing on in bellydance, but pretty close by. Focus & intention are everything, of course, and you need to be ready to deal with whatever issues you "open up" by energizing each area. I find it really releaxing actually, so I must be unconsciously doing it the way it "soothes" the energy rather than stimulating it. I have little idea what I'm doing, just do what comes naturally as I try to follow the Spirit constantly (or as near as I humanly can!). Intuition can teach you a lot if you're open to it ;-)

I love this info about "dancing the chakras"!!! Here is a poem a friend wrote. He is not a belly dancer, but he certainly loves to dance!

          __Chakra___

          From LA to Accra,
          dance all you want,
          and shake that
          chakra.

          If your
          feeling down,
          get moving
          and vibrate that crown.

          Don't let life
          pass you by,
          just keep it
          in the third eye.

          Rock yourself gently
          like a boat,
          and all that energy
          from the throat.

          Don't fall apart,
          just open
          up the
          heart.

          If you want
          to feel a nexus,
          just open up
          the solar plexus.

          Let that sacral shine,
          and upon up
          to the spirit
          of divine.

          Get on going
          with the base root,
          cuz your a
          real beaut.

          You don't need Viagra
          just open up
          to the rhythm
          of a chakra.

          ---Love and light, Peter James
