Re: Healing the Belly
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 9:54 AMI just thought I would share...
I've been dancing for years, since I was a little girl and walked swaybacked with my belly out like a little duckling. Every form of dance told me I was "wrong", "too fat", "too short"... except bellydance, which drew me back again and again as if it had come from another lifetime in my past.
I danced, and proudly bared my belly around campfires at Pennsic, feeling more free and more "me" than anywhere else in my life.
Then I had my son... and he was a c-section. They had to cut me open so he could have life. And I grew to hate my belly. I still danced, and loved the dance, but hated that thick, ropy scar with no feeling. To me it was an emblem of my failure as a woman... my failure to birth my child as generations had before me.
My midwife had encouraged me to get back to dancing, saying it would heal me. For two years I danced, and whenever I felt that emptiness in my lower abs, I cringed. Wished for my old body back. Wondered if my midwife had a clue what she was talking about...
And last month, during a workshop with Sharon Kihara... I finally felt sensation across my scar. That little electric tingle that meant that the nerves had finally begun to knit back together. I cried. And I cried more that night. But my belly is healing, and now so am I. -

Tue, October 2, 2007 - 8:24 PMThis is a timely article for me. I'm trying to get back to healthy eating habits and maintaining a helthy body though things I love-- like dance.
