Do you ever do this? I find that when I do this, I can feel/see an "inner sense" of how I am moving. It is a different feeling than dancing with eyes open, yet, once in a while, it can sometimes occur when the eyes are open.

Re: Dancing with the eyes closed
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 7:23 AMyes, I do! and you're right, it opens up awareness in a different way. Funny, it's one of those "simple" things you do you don't think about mentioning. I sometimes have my students do it but more in a body-awareness exercise than a pleasure escapade ;-)
It's also nice to do very briefly in performance too, tho it can get a little too "me-centered" if you go too long I think. -

Re: Dancing with the eyes closed
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 10:14 AMYes.....I agree that it must be balanced with other ways of perceiving one's own dance.
In performance, closing one's eyes seems to indicate that one is getting so much pleasure out of the movement, that one almost swoons....
:-)
It could also indicate a way of praying or connecting with deity................. -

Re: Dancing with the eyes closed
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 4:18 PMand more conducive to trance states. Try it sometime with a blindfold too... just be sure you're away from furniture and it doesn't help to have someone else spotting you. ;) Temporarily deprived of visual sense, one may experience some spatial disorientation, and that encourages one to move into an altered state.

Re: Dancing with the eyes closed
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 5:50 PMthis tribe has juicey posts:) im practicing this at the moment. i find closeing my eyes helps me to really feel the pleasure of the movement without feeling conscious.
im also practicing with the lights off.i do feel like like the movement changes.. like it comes from the deepest parts of my self . no judgement .no trying to please others. i do try to be giving in my performances.. but i find being lost in dance and movement more challangeing since i am shy and self conscious. im hoping practicing this way will help. -

Re: Dancing with the eyes closed
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 5:58 PMNice, ashley! I'm pretty sure that practicing this way will help, if only to bring more flexibility and pleasure to your dance.
Sometimes, with my eyes closed, I can really feel "inside" my body.
Other times, I "see" with my inner eye......a circle of women dancing around a campfire...........or in a clearing in the woods.....or in a harem....or.....temples.....
