Belts

I was thinking this morning about the placement of a belt or a "waist" elastic and how it feels so different to have the belt down lower. When I have my belt/waist at the waist, there is a different kind of energy. Having the belt rest near the hips (like a regular belly dance belt) is a completely different feeling.

Do you think there is a health benefit for doing this, especially as a woman?

It certainly FEELS so, to me.

ooh gosh I almost deleted your post by accident! whoops
You know you're right, I can't stand having my waist belted in for some reason, but the hip belts have never bothered me, even tight costume ones. How does it feel to you?

I really don't like things at my waist either. It feels way too constricting. Hip belts make me feel....relaxed? released? I guess that's the only way I know to describe it.

You know what's funny? Back when I was a hippie, way before bellydance even entered my mind, I was making & wearing long skirts that came to my hips! that's just how we rolled back then haha or at least I THOUGHT so :-) I'm sure I was really in a daze most of the time -

Yes! That was also part of the "hippie" couture, back in the late 60s, early 70s....back when belly dancing started to bloom for the first time in America! It was part of the young people and bohemian-types bringing "exotic" clothing into the American scene....clothing from India and the Middle East was imitated and re-designed.

Maybe an influence might have been the TV program "I Dream of Jeannie." The "Genii" (named Jeannie) wore a Middle Eastern outfit with pantaloons. They were (at first) supposed to have showed her belly button, but they wouldn't let her show it and the costume was re-designed to cover it up. But even so, you knew it was there!

Now, why is a belly button something that needs to be covered up? :-)

Here's an article about a dancer who started back in the early 70s:

            Great topic!

I too feel restricted and bound up when I have elastic at my waist line. The belly is such an amazing gift and power center! I teach many classes a week, and love having my belly exposed. The feeling for me is one of beautiful expression and openness. Before I started my healing process in The Dance, I used to wear big baggy clothes and I would never bare my belly. The Dance has given me the gift of truly loving myself and my body. This open expression of dance has allowed me to really come into my own in all aspects of my life. For me and alot of my students the power of exposing the belly is a fabulous tool to use in grounding, opening, expressing and healing!

Thanks again for a great topic. :)
  • Chakra thoughts

For me, personally, it is interesting that women of my mother's generation wore pants up to their natural waistline, which seems to split them between the 2nd & 3rd chakras. (And, in my 'feeling', this really conceals & binds the first and second chakras.)

Since the first 2 chakras (root & sacral) are more oriented to our primal, physical experience, this seems to really underscore for me how these women were oppressed sexually and in terms of providing for their basic needs: food, shelter, etc. (Men were supposedly the bread winners.) These attributes are divided, by the high waistline, from the 3rd chakra which is the seat of our self-esteem.

Not to diminish anyone who is comfortable wearing their clothing that way, just a point to ponder. I find that most often, conservative ladies prefer the higher waistline, which I think speaks a little to how we perceive that 2nd chakra.

As far as health benefits, my gut feeling (pun intended for a little fun) is that it is easier to digest when there's not a waistband squeezing between your stomach and your intestines. Call me crazy...

    I absolutely agree with everyone!!!

I feel unable to even breath when wearing belts or jeans that are waist-high.
Sometimes, when I wear yoga pants that are high, I roll them down. It really makes me feel split in two!

Magdalene, thank you for the wonderful explanation of the chakras!

Very interesting - I have a bit of trouble getting some students to wear their skirts and belts at the hip rather than in the waist. I've managed to convince a few by explaining that all eith hard work is being hidden under their skirts......... : )

I know, isn't that funny?! LOL Show us your belly already!

Personally I enjoy the old Egyptian look - a straight line across the hips below the front hip bones. And when you turn around your "dimples" should show in back too! ;-)
