I've recently come to realize that I need to heal specific Chakra areas (never understood, nor ever felt the need to undersand, Chakras before). I've been looking into Yoga. I was, however, very intrigued by the post and video by Narah in this Tribe regarding "dancing through the Chakras".
Does anyone here have specific suggestions on which bellydance movements work well for which Chakras? I'd love to make this a part of my dance instead of adding a whole other seperate discipline. Eentually I do want to take Yoga... but now just doesn't "feel" like the right time.

Tue, July 31, 2007 - 11:36 PMI'm no expert, but all hip movements are good for your mooladhara chakra (root chakra)

Wed, August 1, 2007 - 5:21 AMHi Ameena,
Oddly enough I've been looking into this too. I am on the chakra tribe and that gives you a lot of information on the specific chakras and of course suggestions for some great books on the subject.

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Wed, August 1, 2007 - 12:49 PMA few of my personal preferences (many learned from my teacher Kypris), "visualize" moving the chakra (don't forget the back sides) around when doing:
Shimmies to "shake loose all the extra crap" and wake everything up
Root chakra - amis
Belly chakra - hip slides and circles
Solar plexus - chest slides & rotations
Heart - upper body undulations, snake arms (arms and hands are extensions of heart chakra, left side receiving, right side giving)
throat - head slides (chin stays level, can take in circle)
third eye - head circles (aka neck rolls)
crown - spinning, Sufi spinning
Additonal Tribal:
Taxeem to pull Earth energy up, stir up the kundalini in the root
Maya (Reverse Taxeem) to ground it, pull it down
Ghawazee shimmy is very root chakra, grounded, lead with the pelvis -

Fri, August 10, 2007 - 3:12 PMThank you, Jennifer. That was wonderfully informative!
I'm down with you, Ameena... there are a lot of energies with which to work, but I like to incorporate various disciplines into the dance... I've always found belly dance to be such a metaphor for life anyway... it only seems natural.

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 8:36 AMTo me, the camel (body waves) are excellent for working through chakras 1-5 as they limber up the spine and move through these areas with fluidity. -

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Sun, March 16, 2008 - 8:08 PMI agree that full body camels or undulations are great for 1-5 I often tell my student to visualize or feel the energy come in through the heart chakra and flow down to strengthen the root and as they undulate from down to up, to pull the energy up from the root, and releasing through the heart, sharing the heart and emotions!

Tue, August 21, 2007 - 8:36 AMI also think of hip circles and omnis as great ways of uncoiling the kundalini.

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 7:56 PMOhhhh... this has been soooo helpful!
My latest find is the video with Darshan - Chakra Dance Flow: Movement Meditation (bellydance, freestyle, guided meditation) (2007) www.amazon.com/Chakra-Dan.../B000KZRP1M I'm very happy with this video! I especially need to work on Chakras 1-3 and this video gives me that!!
I've also decided to go ahead and start Yoga classes. I just can't see where I'll go wrong... it seems everything is pointing me that way. So probably after Christmas. For right now... the Darshan video is what I'm going to utalize.
Thank you!
Joyful Shimmies,
Ameena

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 2:04 PMExploring this can be a real education. Remember it wont' always be fun & cool tho - it's hard to have energy going somewhere it's not used to (like when your foot goes to sleep, etc..... know what I mean?)
I think one of the best things to keep in mind is how the heart chakra works as an integrator, or transformer between the material & spiritual, or upper & lower; and remember to send out love - because love is limitless, after all! -

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Sat, August 25, 2007 - 1:16 PMWhen you do bellydance movements for chakras, do you have to keep imagining how the energy flows through them?
For me I think that will be hard, doing the movement and the energywork at the same time. When I dance my head normally goes 'blank', I just get into a sort of dancevibe. I do know how to channel energy, but have always done this without doing bellydance moves. -

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Sun, August 26, 2007 - 5:02 PMHave to? No! :-)
For me visualization is like an extra bonus, it enhances the experience. You are the only person that knows what's best for you, and the right way to do it is how you choose to do it, the way you feel you benefit from the most.
Sometimes I focus on moving energy through my body or my chakras, sometimes I don't, sometimes I visualize the chakra making the movement--i.e. imagine my solar plexus drawing circles over my root when doing torso rotations, or my third eye moving in circles when I do neck rolls.

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 10:37 AMYou don't HAVE to visualize anything, but as other posters have said, it *IS* a bonus. It may help if you reinforce whichever chakra you're working on with a positive affirmation. For example, with the heart chakra, you may want to say, "I love the earth, and all living things in it," or, "I love myself the way I am." If there's a specific chakra you're working on, you may want to flood the room with lighting in that color (be careful with that, though, because overexposure to certain colors can be harmful).

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Wed, March 12, 2008 - 6:01 PMKatrien, you don't have to continuously visualize the flow. It is the "Intent" that is important. What I usually suggest is that you create a series of moves that let you run through it with purposeful intent. I got this idea from the yoga Sun Salutations.

Re: Bellydance movements for Chakras?
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 12:42 PMHi Ameena,
I'm glad your interest was sparked by my video and post! You can tell which chakras we're dancing through by where I touch first. the root/sacral chakra was a little harder to see because my hands are behind me. I'll sum up, though:
1st- (associated especially with getting grounded, the feet and legs) floorwork (which I didn't do this time because by that point in my pregnancy, 8 months, the relaxin + xtra weight made my knees really painful), footwork
2nd- (your creative center [litereally- the reproductive organs- and other expressions of creativity as well]- located in the pelvis) hip movememts of all kinds- circles, slides, mayas, etc.
3rd- (the solar plexis; some call it the navel chakra, some put it higher, closer to the diaphram) belly work (pelvic locks, belly rolls, etc[don't think i did belly rolls there, but did in labor], body waves)
4th- (heart center, associated with the ribcage, breasts, upper back, arms and hands) ribcage (circles, slides, pops, etc) and arm (snake arms, etc.) and hand (circles, etc.) movements
5th- (throat chakra; your expressive center) head slides and circles, neck rolls
6th- (the third eye, also associated with the physical eyes, how you see things, visualization, intuition, etc.) Indian eye movements, visualizing your performance, dance meditation
7th- spinning (especially Sufi spinning, one hand to heaven, one to earth), connection to the Divine and the Divine in others (this is where we joined hands and exited together), dance meditation
there's also a free guided chakra meditation on beliefnet.com It is under practices and faiths, though this one isn't religious
