For an article I am collecting information about the health effects of belly dancing. Does anyone know anything interesting? Would be much appreciated.... ;-)

If you would like to interview a nurse and childbirth educator, e-mail me!
That is how I found Bellydance. It is great for many of the common complaints of pregnancy.

Hi Amma,
yes thats great to hear from you. As a dancer and Mom, I think so too. This year I know of 5 women who started dancing or were dancing for some time and then became pregnent and announced they had to quit because their doctor told them too. I believe it is just because their doctors have no idea what bellydance realy is, and how natural the movements are. Each of these women assume their doctor knows whats best for them, and I think, they think that they dare not jinx their pregnancy. I do not know these women so well to ask so much for their private details, but i try to express how beneficial it can be and what a joy it was to dance when i was pregnant. Realize some cases it may be apropriate to advice someone not to dance, but the fact they each of these women are being told the same thing, i think its just a standard reply.
I beleive that if any of my advanced students were to become pregnant that they would definately intend to continue dancing through their pregnancy, they have witnessed myself and several other dancers dancing throughout our pregnancys. And they saw that we were in good health and spirits, so its inspiring. But I imagine their doctors would say the same kind of thing, only at this point I hope these women would be able to talk more with thier doctors, that they intend too.
I dont know, many people realy hold on to what their doctors say though, as we were taught.

Too bad about the women who quit!!
I, and some of th eother CBEs I know, actually incorporate Bellydance in our basic classes. There is absolutely nothing better to help with the low back pain and leg aches. I have also taught wrist circles to help with carpal tunnell syndrome, which often flares up in preganacy.
One of the greatest benefits is the body awareness and ability to isolate. In labor I can tell a bellydancer where her baby is, and how that needs to change... and she can "see" it in her min's eye. Then she can isolate and make the adjustment. Am I making sense?

Hello :-)
In addition to the general benefits of doing bellydance, I've started to adopt a much healthier lifestyle - so that I can dance better! :-)
My fiance and I get up every morning to walk, I'll do some supplemental yoga/pilates to help strengthen my core muscles, we do protein shakes in the morning and I've cut 99% of the junk food that was in my diet before I started to take classes.
As a result I'm starting to feel a LOT more comfortable in my own skin. I can think more clearly and have a lot more energy than I did before - which is ver, very encouraging personally. I have Hashimoto's(thyroid) disease which can really be exhausting at times, even when you're on medication to treat it.

I had read that BD make stronger muscles of belly and legs and relax them. Thanks to legs activity it protect from disturbance of blood circulation.
It relax and firm muscles of belly, hip and buttocks. Waist become to be thinner andgain soft look. A lot of rotary movements benefit internal parts of woman's organs. Also the muscles of spin are much stronger and disturbances of spin are eliminated (I can personally confirm it :-) ). It is also observed decrease of pain during period and childbirth, becouse movement of basin, hips and belly's muscles has good influence on cramps and cervix during childbirth and this process runs faster.
Exept of serious pathology and strong limitation of activity, there are not contraindications for BD. In fact ordinary pain of lower back or stiffnes of nape of the neck could be healed by this type od dance.
I'm sorry for my weak language. English isn't my native language, but I hope I'm useful.

Practice of bellydance movements has been shown among other things to decrease menstral cramping, and help regulate the flow of hormones in the blood, hence redusing 'PMS' symptoms. It also increases blood flow to the pelvic floor, enhancing sexual responses and feelings, and creating a better sexual experience.
Improved self-esteem has many numerous health benefits too. From better food digestion, to more effecient intake of oxygen. :)
