Here's something that I want to try soon:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Benefits of a Belly Pouch

Yesterday I stuffed my camera into a pouch, strapped the pouch around my waist, and went woods-walking.

The pouch? No subtle earth tones for me. It's bright green with yellow zippers.

The camera? It's been leading me into new directions for creativity. Literally.

As I hiked with the camera bag protruding many inches from my middle, I considered the camera inside to be the eye, the sensor, of my body's center.

Making my body's center the origin of my woods-awareness eased me into being present — to the spaces between leaves, the texture of bark on trees, the way a bee inserts itself into the foyer of a flower.

With the pouch bulging out from my middle, I also felt my belly relax. As in the Shield Yourself in Style inquiry (in Chapter 8 of The Woman's Belly Book), the camera bag gave me a sense of being sheltered, protected.

In the past few years I've been studying qigong, an ancient Chinese practice that cultivates the body's center and develops its capacity to circulate life force (chi, ki, prana).

I've been learning how the energy of the body's center expresses through five elements, also imaged as animal spirits, each with distinctive associations regarding organ, color, season, direction, emotion, and virtue.

In some cultures, the Sacred Feminine has been known as Lady of the Animals. I'm looking forward to exploring connections between the five animal spirits (tiger, bear, deer, crane, monkey) and images of goddess.

Deer, for example, relates to the wood element, spring, the color green, and the virtue of kindness. Monkey relates to earth, late summer, yellow, and trust.

Walking with the green and yellow pouch strapped around my waist, I'm on a belly-led late summer safari into realms of compassion and confidence.

Today, I woke up with a pain in my lower back and right hip. I had fallen asleep last night in an awkward position. I had a lot of work to do today, and was feeling it.

At one point, my body really wanted to do figure-eight's of the hips, over and over again....though fairly gently. I surrendered to the feeling and danced for about 10 minutes...just figure eight's.

My back and hip haven't bothered me since!!!

A short while ago I had a wonderful a-ha moment. After pregnancy and the birth of my soon to be three year old I stopped dancing (stopped having sex as well) and my root chakra became so blolcked and twisted that I was going to a chiropractor twice a week for months. I couldn't stand or walk or sit in one place for too long. I couldn't lift heavy objects. I was uncomfortable and my body, and energy was tied up into knots. I was dissatisfied with the new changes to my body after pregnancy as well. A few months ago this began to change. I began to move, bend, twist with Yoga and then I remembered that I used to dance a few times a week before my daughter and that I loved it, needed it, missed it, and was aching for it. So I danced, in my kitchen wildly and lovingly and a dialogue opened up between my body and mind, then I found some videos on YouTube of tribal fusion bellydance and my heart began aching again. I realized that when I went out dancing there had always been an element of the tribal bellydance in me, moving through me. Also, on those days when my lower back is achy i just bellydance the ache out. Also seeing women of all shapes and sizes in the costume of the dance is so affirming to the image of woman's body. I am much more comfortable with my momma belly that is now part of me. So, It's great to dance in my kitchen for myself and with my daughter, but it is not enough. I need to find dancers. I need to find community. I need to find a space to dance for my emotional, physical, spiritual well being. I feel like I am going to explode with the desire. But here in Bridgewater, CT (translation, one-horse town) I have no idea where to begin. Videos are not enough. Experience is everything. Is anyone near CT that could help point me in a good direction?

She had not considered the option of using bellydance, though she has a patent pending on ALL fitness workouts done in this manner, so when I proposed it, she was all for it. I mean with the isolations we do, it's PERFECT!
I just joined this tribe this morning. I have been dancing for around 5 years, primarily Egyptian style. I dance with a troupe, but due to the changing nature of all things, we don't dance as often as we used to. I started to dance with a new teacher last fall. . .it was invigorating! She taught Tribal Fusion, and I really connected with her and this "new" way of dancing. I have always looked at dancing as a way to connect with Divinity, and that style was like a direct physical connection. However, my new teacher had to move away, and I lost some of my direction. I stopped dancing regularly, and now I am trying to get back to that healthy space. (literally and figuratively.. .I have gained a good bit of weight since slowing down in the dance world!) Seeing this tribe was a little kick start. . .it sounds like there are like-minded women here who dance for similar reasons, and I am hoping that this board continues to connect women and remind us what lies at the core of the dance.
I am looking forward to participating in this community.
Blessings,
Patti

I've been looking into Yoga. I was, however, very intrigued by the post and video by Narah in this Tribe regarding "dancing through the Chakras".

Does anyone here have specific suggestions on which bellydance movements work well for which Chakras? I'd love to make this a part of my dance instead of adding a whole other seperate discipline. Eentually I do want to take Yoga... but now just doesn't "feel" like the right time.

Hi, i just joined this tribe!

I hope to learn more about the holistic, mind/body/spirit approach to bellydance here. I love yoga and try to practice it every day, and I definitely get the integration of mind, body, and spirit in that discipline. I have had practices where I cried after doing heart openers (holding negative issues back, and suddenly letting them out). I have been bellydancing for 2 years now and it has mainly been been mind/body focused. Some practices I would really connect with the music and the mood in a particular movement (usually some form of hip figure eight) and I would get a touch of the spirit connection and just feel so blissful and wonderful. I love those experiences.

I want to learn to cultivate positive energy and love through my dance, rather than just letting it happen. I am of the opinion now that technique is secondary to emotion in dance, whether bellydance or any other kind. I recently read a book by the ethnic dance artist/scholar La Meri, "Total Education in Ethnic Dance" and she repeatedly wrote about the importance of a dancer showing honest emotion, not just having skillful technique. I think a holistic approach to bellydance is just what this means... developing emotion in our dance through practice engaging mind, body, and spirit.

I tend to get the jitters very badly in a performance situation and it nearly scared me off completely from performing at all. I think focusing on that aspect of creating and cultivating positive energy and love in my dancing will help with my awful jitters.

So, I hope to learn much by consciously developing a fully integrated holistic approach to my bellydancing. It's a constant learning experience, for me at least.

I've been in the background here for a while and have learned much from posts here. I was hoping that you may have some suggestions for me. I've noticed in beginning dance classes that many of the students have alot of trouble utilizing mirrors for learning about body positioning. Most of this seems due to a bad body image/self esteem. Having experienced this myself when I first started dancing, I was hoping that you would be able to suggest some exercises to do in/out of class to help overcome this. One exercise I was taught was to hold your own gaze in a mirror for a short period of time, a few times a day. Would anyone have other suggestions to try?

That's really putting it simply!

But it really helped me understand why having positive intentions etc. etc. is crucial.

Of course it's soooo much easier to express it in terms of "chi" than on the molecular level.... I recommend it esp. for folks in this tribe, as it's nice to get the other side of the story, know what I mean?

When I first started dancing as a young woman, I thought belly dance was a fun dance, a way to stay fit and was a good study break. But over the years, 16 to be exact, as I have matured and hopefully gotten older and wiser as well, I have come to the realization that belly dance is a beautiful marriage between the spiritual and the sensual/body. It has become almost a form of moving meditation for me. I feel connected to something greater to myself and often experience a form of ecstacy and pure joy difficult to describe.

Anyway, I have been so inspired and in many ways healed by this ancient and most beautiful art form and frustrated with other people's perception of it as a sleazy dance or sexy entertainment at best, that with my Masters in Counseling and my expertise as professional dancer, I decided to write a book, Belly Dance Wisdom, sharing with others, especially the general public, how the dance has the capacity to connect a woman to her powerful female wisdom and to a female spirituality sorely lacking in our culture. I am pleased to say, my local paper interviewed me on the book, see below, and so I sincerely hope the word gets out so I can begin to uplift the dance as the purest form of art, a transforming healing art. It is my dream that one day the dance will be as respected as ballet and seen as the amazing dance art as well as healing art that it is. No other dance can merge the sensual/sexual aspects of a women with her soul/spirituality as this dance!

There is still some more shooting to do, then scoring the music and editing.... so still a ways to go til its ready, but we've finally gone from the pre-production stage to the production process! We were shooting all day until almost midnight, but I still managed to make it to the Grey Eagle and catch the last few songs by Soora Gameela (who you will love to dance to so check them out! http://www.myspace.com/sooragameela) which was a perfect relaxation and winding down from a long day. It was amazing to see how the process of what happens in studio converts to the screen and how challenging it was to simulate the natural flow and connection of teaching when there is no music filling the room or live students to connect with. But once I got going with my chakra spiral that center point took care of the rest and it started to flow more easily. The folks at A Viewpoint Production gave me the deluxe tretament on setting up the lights for a few hours until they were superbly warm and inviting. It's very exciting to finally be manifesting this and I will be even more excited to get to announce when it is finally finished and available! Stay tuned for updates! ~Mizilca

I've just signed up for this tribe, and it certainly seems that the subject matter is near and dear to my heart. So much has happened to me in the past 3 months; luckily, I've been teaching and working to bring this dance in a spiritual/physical/emotional mode for years now. Holistic to me is the ONLY way to go. How on Earth can people expect to isolate one thing from everything else? It is just not possible, esp. in this dance. Oh, a dancer/teacher can come from DeNile, the longest river in Egypt, but that doesn't make the river any different.
So, I was diagnosed with a rare form or bizarre cancer a couple of months ago. And I am so grateful for these past years of taking care of myself, and dancing dancing dancing.. my whole life has been wrapped around that, i even dream about dancing and teaching.
So, having taken out a small bit of time to regroup, and rest, I am back to teaching again. I can't stand to live without this dance. And I can feel that having been so fanatic about this dance is going to save my life. I've been strong in so many levels, that it will be easier to kill this tumor. Soon. And I want it out of my body, and out of my eye, and very very soon, the tumor will be gone.
I'm now blind in my left eye, and awaiting surgery. I will most likely remain blind in this eye, but so what? I can still dance, and move, and live the way I did before the tumor started.
I just have to re evaluate all that I want to do with this dance; I will be expanding my life to Northern AZ very soon, and want to teach bellydance at more holistic centers, which are VERY prevalent in the North, near Sedona and Flagstaff. This where I wish to take my teaching, so I hope that you, my dance sistahs and brothahs can teach me more.
Best to all...
Lucy

Hi! :-) I'm a beginning bellydance student, having started learning last August. I've really enjoyed it so far! But...(hate it when there are "buts") it seems like I've bumped into an emotional plateau, for lack of a better term.

In January I moved to the intermediate classes on the advice of my instructor. And that's when my emotions started to really catch me by surprise. Part of it was probably the sudden jump from the "this is your hip now let's move it and have fun" format to "learn this choreography and go perform it in three weeks".

Since then I've been overly sensitive when it comes to going to class. Definately going through feelings of inadequecy and of being left out(had to take a few deep breaths last night when I thought I had shown up early only to discover that this week we had a two hour class that had started 45 minutes beforehand. The teacher was nice enough to let the latecomers jump in and it ended up being a lot of fun). I've been doing my best to suck it up and just go and learn as much as possible anyways.

I've performed before, just not in dance. I started playing the violin when I was 9 years old, and it seems like a lot of the emotions I went through back then have re-surfaced. Not as bad as they used to be, but it's annoying!

I'm going through the Rachel Brice Yoga drills DVD at home, which has helped a lot with flexibility. I've also noticed that while moving through the sun salutes that feelings of vulnerability seem to well up from my body. Which probably sounds odd, but I'm not sure how else to describe it.

Was wondering if there are any energy/meditation/breathing exercises that ya'll would recommend to help work through this. I'm pretty sure that eventually it will pass, but I don't want to end up being a pain to those around me.

Thanks!

Karen

To whoever it may concern -

Belly dance has helped me tremendously-

I've always been a dancer. no formal training just a passion for music and the internal rythym to move to it. throughout the years i've changed and like anyone so have my interests. Unfortunately my interests are so diverse that i become submersed into one thing and forget about the others. I've always loved drawing, music, writing, music im really one of those artsy farty types.
They are the one reliant source for personal therapy for me through emotional times and boy, were there alot of them. I used to find myself pulled in several different directions when dedicating myself to a particular interest and i almost felt guilty when paying more attention to lets say drawing than writing.

My self esteem was always low.. and that was something that i've dealt with my whole life. jealousy issues, miniscule confidence and frustration wih my imprefections described me in a nut shell. I never got that whole " be happy with yourself to be happy with others" concept. In short, my attitude put a strain, if not ruined many relationships with friends, boyfriends, and even my mother at times.

Jokingly, my boyfriend of two years, mentioned I should learn to belly dance. Being quick to judge, I immediately got offended having a misconception of the term belly dance, thinking he was suggesting me to learn something erotic. At that he took it back, saying it was a hard dance anyways. So, being driven by an I'll-show-you-attitude and an open mind i looked up belly dancing in my area. Sure enough I found an instructor right around the corner.

It wasn't more than thirty minutes into the lesson when I realized all of my pre-judged ideas about the dance were 180-ed. From that point forward (whic was only about 6 months ago) I have been taking weekly classes and dedicating my free time to learning the art and the expression that is belly dance.

It's win win situation for me. It combines art - costume design and music and dancing. I couldn't ask for a better way to express all of my beloved passions into one wonderful dance (although it is much more than that).

Above all it has changed my life. I feel enlightened. I have confidence... I actually have confidence. i am proud of my body and instead of punishing myself emotionally with not being of Victoria's Secret model status I appreciate what I have and who I am. When i walk into the room i hold my head high instead of staring at the ground. I'm not afraid of not being perfect and that in itself is a miracle. I could go on....

I strongly belive there are angels among us and I strongly believe there is a reason for everything. My boyfriend was an angel for leading me to what i have been looking for my whole life and although I pursued it for the wrong reason initially, I woud've never pursued it had he not said anything. It brings tears to my eyes to think how much belly dance has helped me in such a short time and for the first time in years I am truly happy with life.

Thank you to all of you for keeping such a beautiful culture, dance and way of life, alive and out there. The support you all provide is priceless.

Thanks for this tribe, it's a really interesting topic. I live and teach in Ireland, I was among the first teachers in Cork (actually the second one altogether), so it was all very new to irish women, who are known to have a lot of sexual issues and body issues and low self esteem, especially the mothers, maybe due to catholic opression in the countries history up to now. At first it was mainly foreign women who joined the classes but now the popularity is spreding fast and one major reason for this is the incredible change women go through when they get into belly dance. So many of my students start out with such a bad image of themselves, their lives devoted only to their big families, body issues, the old "I can't move" or "I don't have rythm" or pure embarrassment of actually using the pelvic area in joyful movements in front of others!! But after only a few classes the changes start, postures rise, new earrings here and a new skirt there, more smiles, more giggles, friendships, etc. Funny - as well as not so funny - stories of the husbands reaction to the new found confidence and so on. Food habits change just because they realise how good it is to celebrate and take good care of our bodies! I can not tell you enough of the health benefits I have seen in so many of my students! It's the most therapeutic form of dance and sports altogether I have read in some studies taken out by the german program "hobbythek". And it's just so much fun! ;-)
