I got Aubre's latest DVD last night and watched most of it. My gosh, there's a lot in there! A full choreography (broken down to five combinations, each of which is broken down into several 8-count portions), and TWO performances (Aubre solo plus Aubre with Hajjara and Yvonne doing a trio), AND a wonderful 'video glossary' that explains all the moves. (I have to admit I didn't get a chance to watch the whole video glossary cuz I had to surrender the computer to my hubby's purposes, but I saw the first few moves, and they're really clearly explained.)

And as is typical with HMC's instructional vids, Aubre's shown in front of a mirror so you've got a front and side-back view at the same time for most of it, which is really helpful.

For me, who has been practicing for three years (I had a shoulder problem for one of those years so I don't really count it as practice, though I worked on abs a lot that year), I find it really challenging but doable enough that I want to get started right away. I'm sure it will give me months of solid practice with lots of combos I am looking forward to using in my own choreographies. I am SO glad I got this!!!

My longtime favorites include the routines on Princess of Cairo, Judy Jihan Reda, Aziza Raqs, Faddah Silver (for a short routine), and the Joy of Bellydancing. I'm looking for new inspiration. I've tried mixing my own compilations, but I'm never quite satisfied with the feeling and the flow (my own stuff seems contrived and patched together, like a patchwork quilt when what I really want is a richly woven tapestry). I'd also welcome any advice in making one's own routines (I know the standard cabaret order: for example, exciting, upbeat entrance; veil piece; lively crowd interaction song; short slow piece for snaky moves and floor work, candles, or sword; drum solo; and finale.) Thanks!

OK, so maybe this is just a dream of mine, but I'd LOVE to see a CD (or a BOX SET of CDs) with the *best* recordings of the "The 15 Songs Every Bellydancer Should Know."

See the list here: http://www.dahlal.com/default.aspx?n=20.1

What I would like are one or two versions of each of these songs that are of superb sound quality. If there are 2 versions of the same song, there should be some audible difference in the orchestration. To have all of this beautiful music in one box set I think would be a valuable investment for any dancer.

I'm not aware of any that set that exists like this. If there is, would *somebody* PLEASE point me to it! I can't be the only dancer who doesn't know EACH of these songs. Trying to play catch-up and trying to figure out which CD to buy is a crap-shoot. Totally hit or miss. CD "A" may have the song, but it sounds rough like it came from an old scratchy vinyl record.

So? What do you think? Up for a challenge? How does that sound like a project for 2007? I'll be the first one to buy a copy! :o)
HTTP:// www.bellydancebysoraya.com

On Saturday, February 3, 2007, I performed in one of most amazing events of my belly dance career which took place at the famous Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA. I opened the milestone exhibit of:
"King Tutankhamen and The Golden Age of the Pharaohs"

I am so thrilled to be able to share my joy with all of you. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better after opening the concert for Egyptian singing superstar Amr Diab, I was hired to belly dance at the official grand opening black tie Gala of this amazing museum exhibit. This event has brought me to a higher pinnacle and is definitely one of the highlights of my entire belly dance career. I performed for over 1,000 Egyptian and American dignitaries as national and International press swarmed the scene and television networks filmed every aspect of the event. The Egyptian Ambassador to the United Nations, along with Zahi Hawass, secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, the governor, among many other VIP's from all over the US and the globe were there. I met many celebrities and had a fantastic evening.

"King Tut mania" has spread over the entire Philadelphia and tri-state area. It is everywhere you look. The Four Seasons Hotel (a personal favorite) and other area restaurants/hotels are offering beautiful and delicious culinary treats of Egyptian and King Tut inspired food selections and cocktails. The Four Seasons Hotel in particular, is offering such amazing delights at the gourmet "Fountain" restaurant as well as in the "Swan" lounge. The other entertainment of the evening were men dressed as Pharaohs and there was a live camel greeting the guests! I prepared extra special Egyptian choreographies as well as musical selections for the evening. I could not have had a better time.

For one of my many performances, I had a large television crew following me around with their lights, cameras and microphones. I was told I was being filmed as part of a National Geographic documentary! It will appear on an International special about "King Tut and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs" exhibit. It was so awesome. I was also taped for Egyptian television as there were numerous film crews, reporters, and press photographers from not only Philadelphia, New Jersey, Delaware and New York, but also Cairo, Egypt, Beriut, Lebanon and from all around the Middle East and Europe who were present as well.

Within the exhibit itself, there is not only a child-sized throne made of wood, gesso, gold, ivory, and copper alloy but also artifacts from the five other Pharaohs tombs, which ruled during the “Golden Age”. Close to 130 artifacts comprise "Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs". Fifty artifacts excavated from the tomb of King Tutankhamen range from his Royal Diadem or his beautiful solid gold and bejeweled crown to the miniature confinettes that contained his mummified organs. In addition to the artifacts from King Tut’s tomb there are more than 70 pieces from tombs of other rulers that were also part of the “Golden Age”. All of the antiquities within the exhibit date back more than 3,500 years. It is truly something to behold...This Philadelphia stop on the King Tut exhibit tour will be the only one in the Northeastern region and the last stop in the U.S. before it heads to London, England.

During my many different Egyptian performances throughout this fabulous evening, I could literally FEEL the history and I was so thrilled to have been part of this much hyped grand opening black tie ball. Performing at this gorgeous gala seriously kicked it up to a whole new level. This means so much to me not only as an International belly dance artist and entertainment agent but as a cultural Anthropologist. I am still reeling from all of the excitement of performing on February 3...

May all of your most wildest dreams come true for all of you too!

Much love and many shimmies,
SORAYA

Four Locations:
On the beautiful upscale seashore in Margate, NJ,
Princeton, NJ, the Main Line in Gladwyne, PA and along
Lake Michigan in the prestigious Chicago-land suburb of Lake Forest, IL
