So I hate Milk. It disgusts me. I have been giving my 17 onth old son soy on the recomendation of a few Veagan freinds (none are moms) but my Ped. warnd that this could cause him to develop alleries to Soy. He loves soy and we havn't had an issue but the Doc says Milk is what i should be feeding him. any Sugestions moms? Milk is gross.

I do rice/almond milk with my daughter because it creates a complete protein. My daughter could not handle cow's milk and after a serious stomach flu developed an inability to digest even raw goats milk. One thing that is important when not doing animal milk is to make sure your child is getting enough fats. This was the concern that my ped had, they need it for brain development. I supplement with fish oil and olive oil myself but flax oil and olive oil would work just as well, that gives a large range of vitamins and dha and other good things I personally think soy as a staple is a bad thing, especially processed soy. I did some research about this a while back when my daughter had to go on formula and I would highly recommend doing some research on the subject yourself. If I still had the papers I read I would link them but I don't.

Thanks! While we already suppliment vitamens and he loves tuna and other fish ( I'm not Veagan, I just don't like Milk). But i'll deffinitl check it out. My doc. didn't even mention that issuse, her thought was that the soy is bad for him, but it came across more like she was upset that I wasn't giving him milk, not that I was giving him soy. You know?

I also heard from a natural medicine woman I trusted...
that rice milk/ almond milk combo was good if one doesn't want to use milk.
        (w/ additional fat and vitimans)
I'm not sure if I'd trust toooo much soy but I have no facts to base that on...
(just for me, I don't do great on too much soy...so I figure my daughter may not)

if you read either of ina may gaskin's books, you'll find out that the entire farm community are strict vegetarians (a.k.a. vegans). they raise all of their kids on soy. not from birth, obviously, they advocate breastfeeding of course, but their entire community consumes soy. my family is vegetarian as well (the only animal product we consume is rennet-free cheese) & we use soy a lot. both my dh & my son have mild eczema & i suspect it might be a reaction to soy. it really is a small price to pay, as long as they're not convulsing or vomiting, but we don't go overboard. i watch his consumption & try not to base his diet on soy. my personal favorite is almond milk. i drank it by the carton during my pregnancy!

Allergies may be a good reason not to use soy (soy is in almost everything and would be a MAJOR pain to have to avoid,) but I think there are other good reasons not to eat processed foods on a daily basis. I also remember reading some research (although I am not sure where it ultimately led) on the negative effects of consuming too much processed soy. In fact I remember there being a lot of talk and debate about it on some of the mama tribes.

When we were first introducing milk to my daughter she wanted nothing to do with it. When we joined a local raw milk co-op she suddenly became addicted to milk. Is the only reason you don't want to give it to her because you don't like the way it tastes?

I can't recommend almond milk because my daughter is allergic to tree nuts and it could kill her to drink it. In fact, it is my understanding after having dealt with food allergies that you should limit a young child's exposure to all of the major allergens for the first two years.

I guess for us personally milk is a life saver because Aidan likes it, she not allergic, and it provides so many good things.

Milk bugs me because of the cows and what they eat (or are given). Boob milk from a cow works in the same way for the same reason as boob milk from any other mammal including hummans. It is the to provide the young the right nutriants and anti-bodies for the species. First, I cant controll what a cow eats (and if I could I probibly wouldn't) so If the cow eats grass covered in poo then it will come right out in their milk, and pass it on to whoever drinks it; just like a mom have a glass of wine and then breast feeding. I cannot afford free range organic milk, Here it's more expensive than soy. So I don't know what else the farmers are giving their animals to keep them "healthy" and producing. Secondly I have an issuse with milking machines, I used to have nightmares about being hooked up to them, and ever scine I can't stand the thought of drinking milk! The rice milk seems promising, I'm going to give him a small amount and see if he likes it and is not allergic.

I have been wondering about what I will give my dudes. I'm not a huge fan of dairy and was a vegan for many years, though i find it easier to be more healthful now to eat cultured dairy: high quality yogurts, cottage cheese, sour cream etc. Plus it's pretty yummy when you use it right..Anyway, I like the idea of almond milk or almond/rice milk because of the protein element. Thanks for that idea. Rice milk alone doesn't seem to hold much nutrition compared with the nut or soy moo. I think variety maybe key on not over doing soy or dairy.

"so If the cow eats grass covered in poo then it will come right out in their milk, and pass it on to whoever drinks it; just like a mom have a glass of wine and then breast feeding"

Yikes! I had no idea .....this makes me NOT want to drink raw milk as it is not pasteurized. We know the farmer we get our milk from and we know his place is clean but it seems like it would impossible to keep them stepping in their poo from time to time. I will admit I am sometimes weary of drinking raw milk.

I definitely agree that the mass production of milk and other animal products is unsettling at the least. Besides nutrition this is one of the reasons we are members of the milk co-op. The co-op also happens to be much cheaper than the store bought organic milk (which we are having to drink right now due to a fire at the co-op farm and also because my ob/gyn insisted I not drink it during pregnancy.

Just because your don't like milk, perhaps your son may benefit from it instead of soy?

On another note, I know of a cat owner who feed their cats on vegetarian diets, yet their cat catches mice!
