starting self feeding

My 11 month old has discovered the joy of self feeding. In a matter of just 2 or 3 days, he now refuses to be spoon fed, but I have all this puree food in the freezer (eg: peas, chicken, carrots, etc.). It's too mushy for him to pick up with his fingers. Is there some way I can mix it with something and make it more finger food like and easier for him to pick up himself so that he can shove into his mouth? Thanks.

Cinnamon allergy

So aside from peanuts/peanut butter, I believe Jake is allergic to cinnamon!

He has been feeding himself a lot lately so I gave him a single serving applesauce and put a 'tap' of cinnamon on it.

I washed the dishes and went back to clean him up and where he had dropped the cinnamon on him (chest & leg) was welted and red.

So I googled 'cinnamon allergy' and apparently its pretty common and the most common reaction is contact dermatitis.

A lukewarm bath helped.

So it seems we are still battling constipation off and on at 19 months. And while I am okay doing a suppository etc right now, I'd like any input you have on prevention.

He eats at least one container of prunes daily, as well as snacking on Triscuts for some fiber. We used to add milk of magnesia to his morning oatmeal, but he's been doing well, so I removed it. He eats one container of yogurt daily, and I've cut way way down to nearly nothing on cheese and other milk products. Typical day:

Breakfast: oatmeal mixed with pediasure, one container of prunes, half a waffle, water.
Lunch: one container of yogurt, triscuts, pears, a couple slices of lunchmeat
Dinner: whatever we are having, usually including rice, meat, and veggies.
Snacks: triscuts, bites of whatever I am eating, fruit, green beans, nutrigrain bars
Drinks: water mostly, some juice occasionally, milk only rarely

What else can we do to help his little bowels?

Cam is nearly 16 months, and eating like a champ. He loves to feed himself little chunks of food. However, I still feed him oatmeal for breakfast as well as pureed prunes.

How do you all feed your toddlers goopy stuff? He is nowhere near proficient with a spoon, and is SO hungry in the morning, really has no patience with how long it takes him to feed himself. So I'm still shovelling it in for him. I would like him to be able to eat things like oatmeal and soups by himself...

vegan shweet stuff!

ok, this applies equally to adults, but i'm excited about it. All you vegan's out there may already be familiar with this recipe but it's new to me. The other night i was wanting to make dessert and the fridge was pretty bare. I googled "eggless custard" and the first recipe that popped up said "vegan baby food-custard"
They had it listed as a good mushy baby food, but it's good for just about anything and easy too. I've always been at a loss for what to make at parties for my vegan friends when it comes time for cake and ice cream. Anyhoo- here it is:

2 cups soymilk/ricemilk
3 Tablespoons cornflour/cornstarch

Pour 1 1/2 cups milk into a pot and slowly bring to boil on stove. dissolve the starch into the remaining half cup cold milk, then slowly whisk into hot mix. Keep whisking until solidified, take off stove and cool.

How easy is that? They recommend flavoring with almond or other extracts, me- i've got ginger on my mind.... Oh, and chocolate chips go into it very well, as does coconut and rice. Mmmm- now i gotta go eat those leftovers.

baby just not big on finger foods...??

My son is 11 months old and still just not big on finger foods. He will eat anything mushed up on a spoon, but the same food cubed is not ok. He only likes crunchy finger foods like crackers, but I can't have him eating only snacks all day! So I am still doing porridge and lentils and puree to supplement. I try and offer fruits and veggies cubes, but he never wants them unless i mash them up and spoon feed him. He did go for french toast a few times. It seems that he wants texture to his finger food and if it is soft he wants in fed mushed on a spoon. Andy suggestions? I am not too worried or anything, but I know he needs to get on board with chewing more effectively and moving on from baby food. I am sure it will happen eventually.

In the last few months, Max has become pretty much disinterested in vegetables (except salsa which he'd drink straight out of the container if he could). I could use some tricks from experienced mommas (or inexperienced, yet creative, mommas).

He's 1 1/2. He eats well on his own, using a mixture of utensils and fingers.

3 Bean Chipmunk Chili

Courtesy of www.whiskyinmysippycup.com

3 Bean Chipmunk Chili

First, you are going to need about 10 or so fat chipmunks - best thing to do is capture the little buggers and fatten them up. This way you can make sure they are disease free. Also, you can monitor what they eat. Unless you don’t care then, just go out and hunt down 10-15 chipmunks. If you use a shotgun, please make sure to remove all shot from the meat first. IF you use any “Road Meat” chipmunks, please make sure they are fresh kills - makes it easier to peel the fur off.

Use a cat capture cage, bait it with peanut butter. Once you have captured about 10 to 15 of the little guys, set them up in large cages (each cage should measure 4 x 4 at least). Do not put more than 1 or 2 to a cage. Give them bird houses to live out of.

Now for the next 2-3 months, feed those little guys. Plenty of veggies, (carrots apples, etc.) nuts, (walnuts, etc. shells off) fresh water (put some vitamins into the water), oatmeal. Keep the cages clean.

When the day comes, just shoot the little buggers right there in their cages. Make sure you decapitate them right after and strip their fur off. Hold them upside down to make sure all the blood runs out.

Save the fur - you can make a nice pair of gloves with them later.

With a sharp knife, de-bone the little guys, but save the bones. Once you have your pile of bones, put them in a 2 qt pan and boil them. You will use this as your stock for your chili.

Chop up meat into fine pieces or grind.

2 lb. Chipmunk meat pieces
1 small yellow onion, chopped
1 small green pepper, chopped
2 cans (16 oz. each) Dark Red Kidney Beans, undrained
2 cans (16 oz. each) Pinto Beans, undrained
2 cans (16 oz. each) Black Beans, undrained
1 can (14.5 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste
2 envelopes chili seasoning mix
1/2 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
1-1/4 cups Sour Cream

Use your broth you made from the bones to boil the meat in a large sauce pot on low heat.

Make sure you do this slowly, use a slow cooker to make the meat tender. Cook for about 3 hours on low heat. Then let it set for 30 minutes and skim off any fat.

Add onion and green pepper; cook until tender, bring up to a low boil on medium heat, stirring frequently.

ADD all remaining ingredients except sour cream; mix well. Bring to boil; cover. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

SPOON into soup bowls; top with sour cream.

And don’t forget about Dessert! From Cooks.com, and no, I’m not kidding. I really found it there.

Turnpike Turnover Dessert
6 chipmunks
Tube of puff pastry dough
1/4 c. powdered sugar
1/4 c. milk
6 acorns
Skin and cut chipmunks. Wash and place acorn in each mouth. Divide pastry, pat flat, place chipmunk on pastry and roll like taco. Brush with milk. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes on cookie sheet.

in a food rut?

hello :) i can't get my 16 month old to eat anything!! she's suddenly turned super picky on me. she used to eat wonderfully, now i can barely get her to eat at all. i'm wondering if we're in a rut, and i just need to get more creative with the foods i cook. we do a lot of beans, rice, steamed and roasted veggies, soups, etc., and she used to eat all of it, but now she only wants to eat cheese. she was anemic several months back, and i'm getting concerned about her nutrition. anyone have any cool recipes we shouldn't be living without? anything super high in vitamins/ iron? she does like creamed spinach, thank goodness, so i've been making a lot of that lately. any ideas or recipes would be greatly appreciated!

I've been starting to make stuffed pastas for dinners and to put in her bento boxes for the week, using wonton skins and a little plastic ravioli press that's been floating in my kitchen gadget drawer. So far, I've made stuffed with butternut squash (that was from leftover frozen baby food - see pic I downloaded!), potato and cheese and I'm hoping to do broccoli and ricotta and maybe something with apple..She's not super at navigating them, but she's waaaay better at eating them than just plain mashed food especially since she gets to eat them herself!

Next step - are empanadas!! I just need to find a dough recipe...

Butternut squash ravioli in butternut squash soup with green onions and sour cream. Can be made with homemade ravioli or the store bought ones(like we did tonight). It's simple, boil the raviolis while simmering the soup(we like trader joes soup in a box) add a dollop of sour cream and some chopped up green onions. Simple, you can spice it up with any arraignment of spices, nutmeg and cinnamon are good. Something i do when I am tired and want something easy and yummy.

Pan fried oatmeal cakes. Great for when you have left over oatmeal, especially when it is gooey. Make little blobs, stick them in the frying pan, heat them till golden brown on either side. Anaya loves this because it is an easy way for her to feed herself oatmeal since she doesn't want to be fed anymore, ever.

At 12 months, we can no longer put off buying this. Lucia is only eating finger foods and she's smearing it everywhere! Sigh. we won't be moving out of our 5oo sq ft apt until next month. then we'll finally have room for this piece of furniture. i am investigating the luxury of a high chair - i'm big on spending a bit more and her being able to use this for a while.

So do you like your TrippTrapp or what else you've been using?

We had the goob tested today, and she's lactose intolerant, at least for the time being. Not really a biggie, as she never drinks milk and they said cheese and yogurt were fine. I guess Mac n' Cheese is out though....

mmm.... Mac n' cheese....

anyway, I was wondering if there were any other lactose intolerant kids out there, and how this thing works? Is cooked milk different from raw milk? what about cream and butter?

Mashed Bananas with rice and butter

I am a big fan of butter and certainly helps add some flavor to the delicious dish!

I heated up some butter and then added some cooked rice that had been frozen. While that was heating up I mashed some bananas and just as the rice was finishing up I added them, just to warm them up a bit, not cook them.

I thought the banana might be good for the diarrhea and the rice is a pretty stable, bland food, which is great for tummy troubles but Anaya just won't eat anything right now. Back to the pedialyte. I thought it was delicious though!!! It reminds me of these banana things rolled in rice I used to get at this Vietnamese place in SF. YUM!!!

I made my first baby Bento box for PK today! It included: whole grain tortillas with cream cheese spread cut into diamonds, cantalope and honeydew, grapes, and Oatios. It will probably last her for more than a day, and it didn't contain all the "traditional" elements of bento but it was fun!

now what to do next??
looking here for inspiration... http://lunchinabox.net/ and here http://bentosupply.com/

I found this book at a bookstore going out of business back when I was still pregnant with my daughter and now that she is eating solids it has because an awesome tool. There are great homemade baby food recipes and my daughter is loving them. Highly recommended.

Oh, and I found out that the cheapest but most efficient way of pureeing food is with a hand held purer. I found mine at Wal-Mart for 10 bucks!

Indian foods for baby

Hey all,

I was trying to find info on the web about feeding your baby paneer (indian cheese) and if it's ok - (I mean it *is* pretty much cottage cheese, right?) when I found that there is a babycenter.com for India! There's quite a bit of advice they offer for indian families that are vegetarian on the site, including some simple recipes, that seem pretty neat!

http://www.babycenter.in/baby/startingsolids/

and btw - I did make a batch homemade paneer tonight. Heated up some warm milk, just to a boil, then added about a tablespoon of lemon, reduced the heat and then drained it in a mesh colander lined with some cheesecloth. Then I rinsed it in some cold water, squeesed out the excess water and mushed it into a ball in the cheesecloth, and hung it over a dish. Once it firms up, I figure she could eat it like she eats tofu - I'll give it to her in little sticks. We'll see how much she goes for it! If not - oh well, time for mom and dad to make something with it! :-)

especially for those on the Super Baby Food track, has your baby eaten a continually larger portion?

i heard that the phase that Lucia is going through is not so different, but i just wanted to hear some more mamas out there's experience; around 9-10 months...she was eating about 2 oz/per meal up to 7 oz a day at 8 months. now....i'm lucky if she will eat 2 action cubes (frozen veg/meat/grain made at home) a meal (=1.5 oz). more like she's eating about 2 oz a day, aka 9 bites.

what gives?

Cereal question and problems getting baby to eat...

Hi everyone, I'm new! My son is 10 months old and I've been feeding him the super baby food diet almost to the T since he was 6 months old (exclusive breastfeeder before that). I am SOOOO glad I found this tribe--I will be asking a lot of questions and be a frequent poster here!!!!!

In her book is says that you know baby is ready to eat when he shows interest and it's obvious that breastmilk is not enough. Well, my son happily exclusively breastfeeds and if I didn't intervene would do so for another few months, but my doctor said I really need to start solids.

He HATES eating food. Only a few bites and he's DONE. He holds out for the breast. He won't take a bottle, sippy cup, or even this expensive bottle we bought called the natural nurser which is shaped just like a breast. However, he DOES like yogurt and would eat it all day if I let him!

Any ideas on what I could do to encourage him to eat?

Also, since he doesn't eat much, how can I make a box of morning o's last a long time? Can I freeze the cereal or will it keep well in the reynolds vacuum bags?

Also, how do you store nutritional yeast???

Does anyone know if agave nectar is ok for babies? I know they can't have honey untill after a year. There is nothing on the bottle that says not to feed to babies but I'm new to useing agave and want to be sure. My babes pediatrician recommended sweetened peppermint tea to help with his gas. I would prefer to use the agave rather than plain sugar, if it is safe.

Thanks for you help ladies

I love this recipe and so does Juni. It was the biggest meal she's eaten in weeks. Just note, I don't use ingredients in parenthesis

Serves 4 (generously)

5 TBSP vegetable or sunflower or coconut oil
3 TBSP brown mustard seeds
(a handful of fresh curry leaves picked off stalks)
2 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp garam masala
1.5 tsp chili powder
2 tsp tumeric
(3 red chilies, deseeded and finely sliced)
2 large thumb sized pieces of fresh ginger, peeled and grated
6 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
2 onions, peeled and finely chopped
2 hndfuls basmati rice
2.5 cups water
1 lb 6 oz fish (shrimp, any flaky white fish, scallops, whatever you want)
2 x 14 oz cans of coconut milk
salt and freshly ground black pepper
juice of 2 limes
handful of fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
(3 tablespoons freshly grated coconut)

In a big pan heat up oil, then add the mustard seeds, curry leaves, cumin seeds, garam masala, chili powder and tumeric. Cook for a few minutes until it smells great. add chillies, ginger, garlic, and onions. Cook until onions and garlic are soft. add rice and water. bring to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer 15 minutes. Add your fish and coconut milk and a pinch of salt. Put the lid on the pan and simmer for a further 10 minutes, then stir well to break up the pieces of fish. Taste and correct seasoning with salt and pepper, then just before you serve add lime juice and half the cilantro. Serve in warmed bowls, sprinkle with coconut and remaining cilantro.

YUM!

It seems no matter what cup or glass or sippycup or water bottle I use, Cameron sprays it all over while drinking. It seems he squirts it out somewhere in his bottom lip - or sometimes out the side. It doesn't happen all the time, just usually. I've tried every type of cup, and holding it myself in various positions and angles, with no difference. He also holds his breath while drinking. Any of your little ones doing the same thing? Will this pass? Any suggestions on what I can do to help teach him better?

Thank goodness for the Juicer!

If you don't have one already I highly recommend one. I got one for Christmas and I just can't stop!

I really hope fresh squeezed juice is okay for toddlers...

Aidan is not a big fan of eating vegetables but LOVES the juicer. She is getting carrots, and beets (not too many), spinach and ginger and all other kinds of yummy nutritious fruits and veggies. She loves to sit on the counter and help me push the stuff through. If I mention the word juice she bolts for the kitchen counter singing "juice, juice." She drinks it right up and gets the funniest juice stash (pictures forthcoming soon.)

We are still introducing and offering many kinds of fresh veggies in solid form (not very well received.) At least with the juice we know she is getting the good stuff in some form.

ok so Juni hasn't been eating much due to illness, but I've been offering her lots of different things just in case. Well there was a chunk of banana she had rejected on the table and next to it a plastic popsicle stick she had thrown out of the drawer. Just for fun I shoved the banana on the stick and gave it to her and SHE ATE IT! we repeated twice. brilliant. I don't know if it would work again but it made me happy.

I have a 5 and a half month old and I'm starting to think about making up a menu for him. I'm considering going organic with him. At least for the remainder of his first year. I'm just wondering how many of you go organic with your baby? How about choosing meats and fish?? Thanks!

Boiling vs. steaming

It looks like to me that boiling food and then blending the cooked items with some of the cooking liquid is the common practice, so that we preserve as much of the nutrients as possible. But instead of boiling, wouldn’t steaming be better if we want to keep nutrients in the food we prepare for our babies?? And if we needed some liquid to blend in with the cooked items, why not use breast milk to give it that little extra boost. Anyone try steaming instead?

Interesting

A friend sent this to me...

This is interesting info...

You are what you eat, so eat well. A stupendous insight of civilizations past has now been confirmed by today's investigative, nutritional sciences. They have shown that what was once called "The Doctr ine of Signatures" was astoundingly correct. It now contends that every whole food has a pattern that resembles a body organ or physiological function and that this pattern acts as a signal or sign as to the benefit the food provides the eater. Here is just a short list of examples of Whole Food Signatures.

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye...and science shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart is red and has four chambers. All of the research shows tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex. We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet the body pulls it from the bones, making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Eggplant, Avocadoes and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats 1 avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? .... It takes exactly 9 months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the motility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries.

Grapefruits, Oranges , and other citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like body cells. Today's research shows that onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes.

can anyone recommend any cool cake decorating methods/ techniques/ ingredients to use for my daughter's first birthday cake? i am making the cake, probably zucchini, and would like to decorate it, but i have no idea what to use that isn't pure sugar and dye.. i thought about maybe mixing some pomegranate juice with the white frosting i'm making to give it some color, then throwing it in a bag to decorate with, but not sure if it'll work (think it'll be too thin to hold it's shape)..

I have been reading a lot about the use of microwaves and their dangers. We just stopped using ours. Does anyone know credible studies, info. you can link to this thread that I/we can read.
I know super Baby Foods suggests the use of microwaves but i feel strongly against them now after reading about how microwaves mutate food and allow the fat molecule to swell which is linked to high cholesterol and obesity.
Can anyone fill me in on what they know??
Thank you so much!!

I don't want to put out too much sugar and have found a recipe for a great cake (I think it's even without sugar) in the Super Baby Foods book but wanted to know what else I coud put out as healthy snacks.
Food Allergies!!!

So out of seemingly nowhere, Aidan is allergic to cashews and eggs! We have been feeding her bread with other tree nuts in it from great harvest and she was eating stuff with eggs in it. And everything had been fine.

Then I started noticing she vomitted quite frequently and sort of tied it to the eggs but just though she might be sensitive to the fresh eggs we get from the farmer.

THEN over Thanksgiving break she ate a Cashew (not in my supervision considering the ped said not to let her eat any nuts as they are a choking hazard) and an hour later was had a puffy swolen broken out face that landed us in the e.r. for two and half hours (where we were never seen but thats a whole nuther story)

So we just go to the allergist where she is tested and find out sure enough she is severly allergic to cashews and slightly allergic to eggs. This means we can't even have anything in our house that was even processed in a place that also packages tree nuts. This is insane. I really thought breastfeeding her for a year and a half would protect her from this kind of thing. The hardest part is getting other people to realize how serious the allergy is. If my daughter eats a cashew it could kill her! How crazy is that!!

The weirdest part is that I have this weird allergic reactin to mangoe!?? Even the allergist looked at me funny. When I looked it up it turns out that Magoes and Cashews are in the same botanical family. This just gets weirder to me.

Where do all of these allergies come from? Did you know that the number of children in the us with food allergies has DOUBLED over the last six years? WTF?

I aksed the allergist why it happened and he just shrugged, "Genetics."

When I asked both of my parents if they could remeber if anyone in their family had a food allergy my dad laughed. He said not only did no one in the family have one, but no one he could remember from growing up. He said it must be a new thing.

Sorry for my rambling but I really felt this applied to the tribe about food. I am now on a mission to learn as much as I can and to raise awarness about food allergies. So please feel free to share any stories or experiences.

broccoli florettes, sliced in half
sliced garlic
1tsp real lemon juice (meyers are best)
1tsp salt (or to taste)
1tsp butter/margerine
1tblsp olive oil
1-2 tblsp water

melt the butter in the oil, toss in broccoli & garlic. stir until pretty much covered. add salt & lemon juice evenly. saute for a minute or so. don't burn the broccloi or garlic. add water so that it hisses in the pan, cover immediately & steam for a few minutes. when the water is evaporated, it's done.

Juni's a light eater (of solid foods) and I live with a constant worry that she's not getting what she is "supposed" to get. She's 13 months, she breastfeeds a lot, she won't eat anything else before noon unless it has honey on it. She usually eats one big meal a day that may be what we're eating, if it's appropriate, or a combination of that and veg/fruit purees. She's not a big fan of yogurt or oatmeal/cereal. She likes MumMums and bananas and peas and beans and broccoli, mac and cheese with squash (homemade) spagetti with spinach and redpepper sauce and chicken noodle soup (also homemade). Feeding toddlers is frusterating.

even if I knew what she was supposed to eat, she probably wouldn't eat it.

The other day we were at a friends house and Anaya got into her box of Satsumas...

She ate almost an entire Satsuma, peel and all! She also impaled most of the rest of them with her sharp little fingers. And apparently one of my friends boys left a roll just hanging out and Anaya devoured the whole thing. All of this happened during the time that we cut out most solids except rice to do some allergy testing because she has had rashes all over her poor little body, including the most horrific diaper rash I have ever seen. She was obviously very hungry and over the whole "only rice" idea! But the diaper rash got WAY worse, I'm thinking allergies to wheat AND citrus! Bummer... So funny story ending on a sad note.

Ok, I know this is a homemade baby food tribe, but I wanted to know what brand of bread that people are buying for their babies. I have noticed that most are made with honey. I understand that you can't feed your little one honey until 1 year of age, so what are people buying?

thanks!

we have this amazing farmer's market in our neighborhood. one of the vendors is an artesian baker from delaware that offers oatmeal cookies made with no sugar (!) just pureed plum & pear. they're big, scrumptious and really expensive .. like, $1.75 each .. $$cha-ching$$

i'm thinking i should make them at home ... as an experiment, i'm going to use three leftover jars of organic prunes, an overripe banana or two and a fresh pear mixed with old fashioned oats and dried cranberries & golden raisins.

do you mommas think i need anything else? i'd like to avoid eggs & dairy since abigail's best buddies are dairy allergic.

I'm so totally stoked to whip up some batches of baby food for her with this stuff (though mom may steal a guava or two - hehe!)

Ok - much reviled I know, and maybe no one wants to hear about it, but just in case....

So far, the Stew with hidden carrots and broccolli and the Mac n' Cheese with squash are huge successes

The banana bread with cauliflower..... I don't know. It's not that it's bad. Maybe if I didn't know. Or if it had butter in it instead of oil (She's really into low fat/ low saturated fats which doesn't really do it for me when it comes to baking)

The Aloho chicken skewers were a disaster, but that was my fault. I managed to both burn and undercook them. bad mama!

I'm really trying hard to get 6-8 servings of fruit and veg a day, and this is helping.

I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this:

Pk is not digging the avocado. And though she loves banana, I'm worried that she'll get hooked into a sweet tooth with it.

so Iv'e began to mix banana and avocado, and she seems to really like it! I'm hoping to maybe add a little more avocado each time, so she'll develop a taste for it. It's a little sneaky, but avocado is so good for her..

anybody else have any favorite food combos for their bebe?

Hi all,

I have read the Super Baby foods book, and I can't find anywhere that says when we can start giving the little ones bread and any kind of spices. What have you all done?

pumpkin pie!

pumpkins are in season now and i've been making pumpkin pie twice a week! It's a great consistency for babies- solid, yet squishy and it's sweet naturally with almost no added sweetner.

2 c cooked, masked pumpkin
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 to 1/3 c honey or sugar
2 T molasses (optional)
1 t cinnamon
1 t ginger
1/4 t cloves (or nutmeg)
1 c light cream, or 1 c milk plus 2 T butter
1 t vanilla

blend all ingredients well, pour into pie crust and bake @ 400 for 45-55 minutes until knife comes clean. Yummy!

You can substitute cooked sweet potatoes or winter squash for pumpkin, just add more nutmeg and maybe some shredded coconut.

I love how versatile it is, last night for variety i made it a ginger pumpkin pie- tripled the powdered ginger and cut up a nub of ginger root and it was excellent! It never lasts more than a day coz we eat it so fast and Sequoia loves it. From my own experience, i usually use sugar rather than honey because sometimes the pack is a little watery and i don't want to add more liquids, but if you don't have that problem, honey has a better flavor.

Pumpkin pack is easy to make. Take a small pumpkin, slice it in half (the hardest part), scoop out the insides and lay it cut-side-down in a pan with a cup of water then bake it @ 375 for an hour, usually. Scoop the flesh out into a bowl and puree it with a hand blender. Voila!

I personally have my own strong opinions about soy but I was wondering how other people feel about it's use with babies? Do you feed your children soy? If so, what kind(s)? I personally don't generally, in fact I eat minimal amounts of soy myself as I believe that it's greatest benefits occur in small amounts. I was thinking about this because I gave Anaya a couple of very small pieces of tofu from my dinner tonight and have noticed a lot of gas in her little belly.

But you'll be really proud of little Anaya! So I won't go into the story of how we ended up eating McDonald's but it happened, tonight. So we are sitting at the table and I happen to have a jar of Organic baby food in my diaper bag(I always carry on just in case). So Anaya has been given some Nuggets and fries. She eats a little bit here and there but pretty much refuses it. So I take out the Organic jar of baby food and pop it open. Little miss shoves the McDonald's out of her way to get the spoon in her mouth. She practically said, "Enough of this CRAP Mom, I want the good stuff!" Boy and I PROUD! She's knows that fast food=bad food! Even the cat wasn't eating the dropped pieces of McNugget.

On the upside of this McDonald's fiasco, I was thinking about it today and Anaya has had maybe a total of 10 jars or baby food in her life, I don't even think it's that much. That makes me happy, most of her food has been homemade or at least from some super-super healthy restaurant here in Eugene.

On another note, guess what book I scored for free a few days ago?

You guessed it, Super Baby Foods! YEAH!

Our Baby Birthday Cake and Pie Recipes

We did both pumpkin pie and zucchini cake (amazing you have to try). Sorry these aren't vegan for those animal product shy mamas. Maybe you could adapt them?

Homemade Pumpkin Pie: (You can freeze any remaining pumpkin puree to use for later pies)
-Cut 1 pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds and place cut-side down on a rimmed cookie sheet.
-Bake at 325 until pumpkin is very soft, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Let cool and then scoop out the inside.
-Puree in a blender until very smooth, adding the juice from the cookie sheet if necessary to make s smooth paste.
For the piecrust: Put 1 cup of white flour in a medium sized bowl. Add _ stick frozen grated butter and stir to mix.
-Add 1 TBS canola oil and 1/8 cup of water. Very gently stir/knead to get the dough to stick together (do not over-mix).
-Lightly flour a counter top. Pat the dough into a circle and then begin rolling out the dough so it is large enough to fit a 9- inch pie pan (keep adding a little more flour and turning the dough over so it doesn’t stick).
-Lay the dough in the pie pan and fold the edges over to make the edge of the crust even.
For the pie: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Bring 1_ cups half-and-half to a boil and then remove from heat. Combine _ cup maple syrup, _ cup brown sugar, _ tsp salt, _ tsp cinnamon, _ tsp nutmeg, _ tsp ginger, 1_ cups pumpkin puree and 3 whole beaten eggs.
-Add the half-and–half and then pour the mixture into the pie shell and bake for 40 minutes.

Enjoy! FLORA'S FAMOUS ZUCCHINI CAKE

for the cake : ( i double the recipe for 4 layers but i use two bowls for mixing )
1/4 cup golden raisins, optional
12 ounces zucchini, weighed before grating
2 large eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
1 and 1/2 cups self-rising cake flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

2 8x2 cake pans, greased and lined with parchment

for the frosting :
7 ounces cream cheese ( i double the recipe and use two full packets )
1/2 cup confectioner's sugar
juice of 1-1.5 limes
2-3 tablespoons chopped pistachio nuts

preheat oven to 350.

if you're using raisins, put them in a bowl of warm water to plump them up
wipe zucchini with kitchen towel ( but don't peel ) and grate, using an ordinary box grater as a food processor is too powerful. after grating, put in strainer over sink to drain excess liquid.
put eggs, oil & sugar in a bowl and beat until creamy. sift in flour, baking soda & baking powder and continue to beat until well combined. now stir in zucchini and raisins. pour mixture into pans and bake for 30 minutes until slightly browned and firm to the touch. leave in pans on a rack for 10 minutes, then turn out and cool on same rack until frosting is finished.
beat cream cheese in a bowl until smooth ... add confectioner's sugar & lime juice and beat until well combined.

refrigerate for a while if you feel like the frosting needs some firming up. just before serving, scatter pistachios on top.

*i frost only the tops, leaving the sides au natural*

Cameron (10 mos) came down with the flu last week and had to be hospitalized for three days for dehydration and an impacted bowel. He's doing MUCH better now.

However, we're supposed to be giving him a laxative, but we're not, because he has to drink it dissolved in like 8 oz of liquid, and he WON'T DRINK. Ok, that's a slight exageration, but he seriously drinks only like 2 oz a day over the course of a day from a sippy cup or glass. We've tried everything, and now are just trying to make it fun. wahoo.

We've also changed his diet to include a lot more fiber, but that seems to be giving him extremely painful gas...like wake him from a dead sleep painful gas. Because of this, he's constantly fussy, squirmy uncomfortable, and not rested. I also think it is a contributing factor on him not wanting to crawl yet.

Any ideas on how to deal with painful gas and/or food ideas that help with constipation yet are less gas-inducing?

and surprisingly...she basically likes NOTHING!
She'll deal with some of them-- like pear (but isn't loving it)
and others will flat out refuse to taste twice! (pea's were NOT a hit)

IS THIS NORMAL???
or is my girl super unusually picky from the start:-)

Any ideas?

teething biscuits?

HI I was wondering if anyone had a receipe for teething biscuits? Or if they had a brand that they really liked that they bought. My babe is 7 months now and I am looking at starting her on something more solid.
Has anyone feed their little one rice cakes, someone told me that this was better than cheerios?

thanks for all ya'lls input!

hi,

i exclusively breasfed until my son kin was 6 months old. now he eats a little bit of solid food every day.....mostly pureed vegetables. but a friend recently told me that its important that these growing guys (he is currently almost 8 months) need extra things, like iron and fluoride. is this true? is it important to be giving vitamins right now?

i appreciate any links, opinions, and/or information....

aloha,

Peas are proving to be something that really cleans my little mans system out. Four poops in one day! Who ever knew there was so much roughage in them? I take it giving him banana one day and peas the next should sort him right out.
