Welcome to this tribe!

For many of us, our biggest gift-giving holidays are drawing near, and now's the time to be thinking of what to give the ones we love. Homemade gifts are not only more economical that the store-bought variety, they also show the time and care we choose to devote in giving to those who are important to us.
Many great ideas will follow. Meanwhile, why not add some great ideas of your own?!

thanks for making this kinda tribe, i am el cheapo as far as gift giving...LOl one year money was SO tight that i gave my family (mum dad 3 siblings) stuff i bought at the dollor store, but the stuff i gave wasnt cheasy looking, and the gifts were a little bulky like, like i gave me mum a set of nice cobolt blue colored wine glasses from teh dollor store. took me forever to match all teh cups color tone wise but it was worth it. LOL
heh i am only good for ideas when given a direction to go with...LOL creativity and crafting things runs in the family, my grandmother on moms side used to sew knit pottery crochet and paint i beleive, me mum taught herself to make jewelry, and she can paint, sew minimally, crochet, tat (kinda sorta dioly making) and shes really good at just making *stuff*.
now *I* cant do as much as they can (as far as i know havent really been trying up untill now...) but i can crochet a little bit, sew a little bit, create jewelrys a bit, and like me mum just make things. so heres hoping i can open up those crafting genes some more! woo hoo!

Thanks for being the first one to join! I think this will be a really good tribe. I mean, if I saw it out there, I'D join! I've just never started something like this before, so I'm a little nervous about getting it up and going.
I saw in your profile that you're a member of the homemade beauty remedies tribe. Is that how you saw this? They have such great posts on soap making, scented oils, etc. I thought those would probably be some of the directions we can go in. Also, there are TONS of food gigts that can be made, as well as almost endless, simple sewing projects. (Seasonal decorations, table settings, etc.) We'll see where we go.
And THANK you, again, for joining me!

Yeah, they do have some great stuff for cheap! Last year, I bought yards of really beautiful fabric at Walmart and made napkins for christmas presents. I thought of my friends' homes and color preferences, and bought fabric accordingly. I good set of 8-12 napkins can be a nice, lasting gift.

Hi -- Thanks for the new tribe. Past gifts I've made for friends and family include soaps, jewelry, hats, scarves, and this year... Monsters! Everybody needs a knitted monster, right?
P.S. You don't GOTTA love Wal-Mart. I sure don't. But I do love gettin' things done "on the cheap" -- so I'm with you there!

I just bought regular cotton blend stuff. My fave was a bold autumnal leaf print-- really beautiful. I liked it so much, in fact, that I made myself new kitchen curtains from it, too!

Thanks so much for creating this tribe :-)

After several years of literally digging myself into a hole trying to buy christmas gifts for everyone, I've decided to just try and make gifts this year. I've been wracking my brain trying to come up with nice gifts that i can create, that people will still like and appreciate.

In the past I've done tins of homemade candies and cookies, as well as long, peasant-like patchwork skirts for all the women in my family.... I definately need some new ideas for this holiday season!

Great tribe! Thanks for starting it! I am feeling super crafty this year already. For a little kid halloween party this weekend we had all the kids make their own scarecrows out of straw and used baby clothes! Man, they turned out great! Now I am ready for thanksgiving and xmas. One xmas I was hella broke so I went to the 99cent store(much better than wallmart) and made journals out of note books and old magazines. I was embarrased at first but it turned out that my family loved them and kept telling me how creative I was. Funny. My lack of pay check is leading me in that direction this year again. Im so excited! Patchwork skirts sound like a great idea! Good way to get rid of all that extra fabric.

You know, the gifts you put the most thought into are usually the most meaningful--to both giver and receiver. Usually, homemade gifts are the ones with the most thought and attention. It can really be a blessing (even a gift!) to the giver to create something of their own to give to the people who matter.
More than that, it helps put the sense of "gift" back into giving! (Gets rid of that old commercialism.)

Agreed! I LOVE making gifts. I actually think giving handmade stuff for me is better than selling stuff. Thanks for making this tribe, Elizabeth! I've got lots of crafty ideas swirling around this year. Here's some of my ideas:

Dog Biscuits in a ceramic crock with bones painted on.

Birdseed suet and peanut butter onaments for outdoor trees.

Spa baskets including eye pillows, bath salts and/or scented soap and candles.

Photo gifts from photos I've taken and old slides I've had scanned.

        Felt fairy ornaments.

I also make cards every year. Sometimes from drawings. This year I'm using a photo I took last winter.

My trouble this year is pulling it all together in a coherent way. I don't want to be spreading myself too thin. I want to do stuff that ties together, like a spa basket, or a pet basket. I always have so many ideas, I give things that don't really tie together and it looks somehow cheaper that way, you know? I'd like to decide on a theme and have everything tie together. Haven't found the thematic thread, yet.

Oh, wow, Kathleen. You really do have a lot of ideas! Yay! Keep 'em comin.
When I was out today, I meant to buy one of those mini loaf trys I mentioned on an earlier post. (Oops, I forgot.) I am going to, though. When I decide which breads to make, I'll post the recipes here. Anyone else with good holiday breads to share recipes for, please post them, too! I am also going to bake some to give to homeless people in my area. I want to give them a little bit of home for Christmas. I'm hoping to get clever and write a simple poem to go with.
