This year, I am virtually without income, as I am in the application process for disability. So, I am needing to go REALLY cheap, but still wanted to do nice things. Okay, some of them sound crazy, but they're actually pretty cool. I got the first nuggets of some of the ideas from the Homemade Beauty Remedies tribe.

I'm making rose milk bath, which is really amazing to the skin. (Did you know that Cleopatra bathed in asses milk?) It leaves your skin fresh and youthful, and radiantly healthy. I'm almost embarassed to tell you how easy it is to do! A month or more ago, I began gathering rose petals from our bushes and drying them. There may not be time to do this properly now, unless you have a food dehydrater. I bought pretty acrylic jars which can be painted, or simply have a nice ribbon tied at the neck. Needless to say, the jars were inexpensive. Then, all I do is mix dried rose petals with packaged powdered milk--that's it! I'm hoping that the rose petal touch will throw people off so they won't need to realise that it's just powdered milk. ; p But it really is good; I use it myself. Then, I just need to affix a pretty tag with explanations for use. (One to two cups milk bath to a tubful of hot water)

The other super cheap things are directly stolen from Homemade Beauty remedies, and they're great. The first is a coffee scrub for the face. (I do this nearly every day, and my skin always thanks me!) All I did was to dry my used coffee grounds (Organic, always ground fresh) for about two weeks. You have to make sure that they are thoroughly dry, of course. Then just put them into small, pretty jars, again with instructions for use. (One to two tablespoons on the palm of your hand. First rinse face in warm water, then apply coffee skin purifier with fingertips or washcloth, working in a circular motion. Apply liberally to face and neck, using a gentle scrubbing motion. This removes the dead skincells, revealing healthy, glowing skin, and the tannins in the coffee are good for the complexion.)

Along with the "Coffee Skin Purifier" goes a non-scratch kitchen scrubby sponge, which I've cut in the shape of a fish. This is a wonderful exfoliator, and some people have said that it works better than the expensive kits. Exfoliation is the number one aid to maintaining youthful skin. I keep my sponge in the shower, but where it will stay dry. It must be completely wrung out and kept dry between uses or it will mildew. I use it one my face and neck, at least, every time I shower, and sometimes a use it on my whole body, including my feet. Again, the sponge shouls be used in a gentle circular scrubbing motion. It's quite incredible the difference it makes to my skin. I just turned 44, and my skin probably looks thirty.

Anyway, these three items, in a basket, make a pretty good gift set, and cost next to nothing, provided you have pretty jars onhand ot can by them cheaply.

This year, I'm hoping to get it together in time to print up a little recipe book of some of my favorite dishes and baked goods. I had hoped to manage it last year, but ended up doing an abbreviated version: cookies, candy and/or sweet breads with their recipes attached.

But, this year, I really want to make something more like a real recipe book. Problem is, I never measure when I cook, and, unless I'm baking, I don't follow someone else's recipe. So, it will be a pain to actually try to measure ingredients to make up the recipes. Ah, well.

I have some WONDERFUL old "Ladies' magazines" from, like, my great-grandmother's time that I want to copy some pages from, for a bit of nostalgia. There's one little recipe book entitled "All New Recipes That Men Like." Really!!

I'm something of a cumpulsive cook (and a very good one, I must say) so my brain is stuffed with possibilities.

What is anyone else thinking of making this year?

We did it! Turned it into a slumber party - at six pm we had four eight year old girls who stayed up til eleven, were awake at five, and gone at ten. They made three spa inspired crafts and enjoyed three more spa inspired activities. After pizza and apples and green beans (menu by my daughter) we made bath salts (I gave the each of the girls their own mixing bowl. Used regular sea salt and added in 15 drops peppermint essential oil and 1tbs apricot seed oil per 3 cups salt). Hate having glass in the bathroom - clutz that I am...so I bought these tupperware type containers made for shaking up salad dressing and they decorated them with sticky foam letters. While watching a movie I gave them each a plastic dish pan with warm lavender water to soak their feet. I rubbed body butter on their hands and covered them with spa gloves then dried their feet one at a time buttered them and wrapped each foot in a hand towel. I put just a few curlers in their hair and gave them each a terry lined shower cap - which they all opted to wear to bed. When they woke at 5 they watched another movie and at 6:30 I got out fresh berries, banans, yogurt, granola and mini graham craker crusts which they put together in a variety of ways. After breakfast we made bath bunnies (washclothes rolled, folded and tied to look like bunnies). Next craft was glittering hair gel. Bought empty plastic containers from a bulk potions store, filled them with hair gel and added very fine purple poly glitter. I fixed their hair in ways only little girls and punkrockers love. After that we painted their finger and toenails, had a snack and at 10 am sent them home. Thank you all for your inspiration! Oh ya, I'll post some pics on my profile too...didn't take nearly enough...always the case

Crop circles. A traditional dish garden is small and highlights miniature, jewel-like plants. Utilizing rocks and moss in contrasting colors, these fun alternatives make an artful addition to your patio or deck.

How to make dish gardens:
1. using terra-cotta bowls with drainage holes- we chose 6- and 12- inch shallow ones- as guides for circles and a metal ruler to trace stripes, cut mud flats of ground cover such as deep green irish moss and/or golden green Scoth moss with a paring knife.

2. Fill bowls with potting soil and plant groundcover.

3. To add a circle of spiral of polished stones, arrange them on the groundcover and cut guidelines around them.

4. Remove the stones, cut out a channel between the guidelines, then replace the stones. Keep dish garden out of full sun and water once a week. Diluted plant food will help keep it green.

Okay, so, today I bought most of the stuff I'll need to make my presents this year. I have decided on a combination of baked goods, recipes and holiday candles to accompany. I think I told you all before that I bought the multi-mini-loaf pans? They're really cute. I've decided I'll make banana bread, zucchini-carrot bread, and orange-cranberry bread. I'll post the recipes, if anyone's interested. Also, I'd still appreciate recipes on any of your favorite quick breads.

For the recipe books, I bought rich blue report covers for 42 cents each. I'm going to fold them in half from top to bottom and glue them, making them smaller and sturdier as covers. Then I'll use a hole-punch and hold the recipes in with brads. I'm really looking forward to choosing my faves to add to the collection, as well as choosing the photos and other visuals to accompany the recipes!

I have some holiday-print cellophane gift-bags that I bought for a fundraiser at my son's school last year. I think I'll put my mini loaves in them and tie them up with curly ribbon. So, some people will get just a set of 3 mini loaves with the recipes. Some will get 1 mini loaf, recipe book and a candle, others will get whatever combo strikes me at the time!

I got the candles at Target. They have a pure scent to them, none of that gross perfumy smell. I got sets of 3 candles in milk-glass jars with wooden lids for 7.99. They are really pretty and even classy. The combos I chose were all vanilla bean, silver fir, and pumpkin spice. Really nice. I'll give 1 candle along with recipes, etc.

I can't wait to get started on my recipe book! (Could become a family heirloom!)

one of the best gifts you can give is etched glass.

you can buy a big bottle of etch creme for around 6 - 8 dollars (and i think Wallie world might even carry it)

a roll of contact paper for a buck or two or three, to use for stencils (although you can buy prepackaged stencils, but maybe not so cheap)
and its more fun to make your own.

an exacto knife (about 4-10 dollars depending on what type you get)

use any type of glass, mirror, bottles, plates, glasses (esp wine or tea cups: dollar store is great for these), etc that you get.
even experiment with colored glass but clear is prettiest in my humble onion.

Ive even used white clear glass 7 day candles (sometimes called emergency candle, sometimes with spiritual icons on them) so that the design shows up as the candle burns. MAKE SURE AND CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN THE OUTSIDE TO REMOVE ALL WAX!!

and of course, those clear christmas glass ornaments (another project would be to fill those and give) BE CAREFUL! GLASS IS VERY DELICATE AND WILL BREAK EASY THOUGH....

you clean the glass well, dry,
design and remove your stencil, place on object
smear etch creme over glass as directed (time is usually for about 5 minutes but of course, lol, just follow the directions on the bottle)
rinse
dry
and viola!!

then of course, the only thing left is your imagination.
fill, leave empty, make one, make many, so on and so on and....lol

this year im going to do glass plates that are designed to look like the man in the moon, set on a small plate/picture easel, and place a tea light candle behind it.

Another frined, whose son's birthday is on halloween, has the kids paint their own mini pumpkins at his party to take home.
