This Weekend - GeckoFest and Drum Circle!

Geckofest will take place THIS SATURDAY (AUGUST 30, 2008) from 12:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. at Beach Blvd. in Gulfport. The Hoola Monsters will be performing throughout the day and into the night, using sparkle, glow and fire hoops.

Our booth will be stationed between 29th and 30th Avenues, so swing by and say hello. We'll have LOTS of hoops and gear available for sale - including brand new items that are not yet posted in our online store! Hoop jams will be happening throughout the day, and as always, we'll have extra hoops available for people to borrow and play with.

The event is FREE to the public and features a variety of strolling street performers, main stage musicians, fun foods, and a plethora of purveyors with all types of weird and wonderful wares. Partial Proceeds from the 2008 GECKOFEST will benefit the St. Petersburg Aids Walk.

HoopGirl Workout Comes to St. Pete... and More News

Hi Hoopers!

Lots of exciting stuff going on... first off, my 8-week HoopGirl Workout series begins August 7. Please visit the Classes page on hoolamonsters.com for details and registration info.

Second, Daytime (WFLA-TV) aired a segment today where Christabel (HoopGirl) was featured, along with a plug for Hoola Monsters! Yay! Christabel did an excelled job on TV, and the hosts were really getting into it. This show airs in 9 markets, so it's really great exposure for HoopGirl and for us. Speaking of exposure, here's a link to Tampa Bay Times pics from our 4th of July performance at Jackson's... (Once you get onto the site, click on the 'prev' button in order to view each one).

Friends, Big News!

Pick up the Tampa Tribune this Sunday (7/27), if you happen to remember. A feature story is coming out about hoop dance, and they are profiling our group - The Hoola Monsters. After multiple interviews and lots of photos, I feel really confident that this is going to be a great piece. Lately, my number one goal has been to share hoop dance with the world and what better way to do that than through the news media? I am so incredibly excited about the article. I will be sure to post a link here when it runs but I just wanted to give you all a heads up.

Want to meet HoopGirl???

Hello FL Hooper Friends!

I have some exciting news! As you may know, Christabel (a.k.a. HoopGirl) will be here this weekend for teacher training. At the end of the three-day event, we plan to celebrate with a big hoop jam at the Treasure Island Drum Circle. Come out on Sunday (6/22 - weather permitting) to meet and hoop with Christabel!!! We understand that not everyone who may have wanted to attend teacher training was able to do so. I think it's super cool that she's coming out to our drum circle to hang with locals :) Let's hoop it up this Sunday and show her that the scene is alive and well in FL!

Speaking of the teacher training, Jodie, Jessica and myself from Hoola Monsters will all be attending/ participating. So, after we receive our HoopGirl teacher certifications, we will begin to teach the HoopGirl workout in St. Pete, Clearwater and Tampa. Stay tuned for class schedules. In the meantime, we hope to see your beautiful faces on the beach this Sunday!

Booty Shorts

Hey everybody. I'm new to hooping, I just got my first hoop in the mail from Hoopgirl.

I've been hooping in my bathing suit, but I was wondering where you guys get your booty shorts?

Also, any tips on where in the Central FL. area I can find the tubing required to make my own hoops?

Hoola Monster Hoop Class at Xtreme Fitness in South Tampa... Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m. Call (813) 258-2639 to register for class. You do not need to be a member of the gym to sign up, as this is a one-time specialty class. If all goes well, I will be teaching the 6-week HoopGirl series in July.

And on Wednesday, June 11 - a big group of hoopers plan to meet up at the Blueberry Patch in Gulfport for some LED and Fire Hoop fun. We hope to see you there!

Last but not least, HoopGirl FL Teacher Training registration closes on Monday the 9th. THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP!!!

Important Info. For Those Seeking HoopGirl Teacher Training Certifications

Hi Hoopers!

For the first time ever, Christabel will be hosting a HoopGirl teacher training workshop on the East Coast. In addition, her live trainings have been drastically cut down for 2008. By 2009, most of the HoopGirl teacher training programs will be distance learning packages. In other words, this is the first time (and quite possibly the last time) you'll have an opportunity to train with Christabel in person, on the East Coast.

The 3-day event will take place June 20-22 in St. Petersburg, Florida at the Roberts Recreation Center (located at 1246 50th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33703). For those unfamiliar, St. Pete is located just outside of Tampa. And if you can't make the Tampa training, here is the full 08 calendar for Level 1 Teacher Training:

May 30-Jun 1 Santa Barbara

June 20-22 Tampa, FL

July 30-Aug 1 Birmingham, UK

Sept 12-14 San Francisco, CA

Oct 10-12 Louiseville, KY

BACKGROUND:
The program is spread over three days, for a total of 24 hours of hoopdance instructor training. It's intended for those seeking a career as entrepreneurs teaching hooping as a mind-body, athletic dance form. Teaching is taught as a transformational practice of personal growth and empowerment. Graduates have the option to license as official HoopGirlWorkout™. In other words, this is an awesome opportunity for you to become certified and spread the hoop love in your own city by teaching hooping classes.

A few of us are meeting up at Skipper's Smokehouse around 8 p.m. today (5/28). Reggae night with local band, Impulse. $2 Red Stripes. Hoops. Fun People. What more could you want? :) Hope to see you there!

Hoop Friendly Spots in FL

Hi FL Hoopers!

If you take your hoop out with you at night, I'm sure you've run into the issue of not being allowed to hoop in certain places. There are some local bands that I love, but sometimes, I'm unable to hoop at their shows because of the venue. So, I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread on hoop-friendly spots in FL. We may also want to list places that won't allow it. I think this will be a beneficial resource for us, so please contribute to this thread when you have a chance :) I'll start with my area...

Hoop-Friendly Spots in St. Pete, Clearwater & Tampa:
- The Blueberry Patch in Gulfport
- Treasure Island Drum Circle (Sundays on the beach)
- The Garage (DT St. Pete)
- Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa
- Rare Olive (DT St. Pete)
- Dunedin Brewery (outside, as space is limited indoors - but you can still hear the music)
- Yeoman's Pub (on Davis Island/ Tampa... space inside is limited but you can hoop outside and still hear the music)
- Honey Pot (Ybor City)
- Czar (Ybor City)
- The Castle (Ybor City)
- Cafe Alma (DT St. Pete)
- Clearwater Drum Circle (Sat evenings - fire spinning is permitted)

Places I've Gotten in Trouble with My Hoop:
- Push Ultra Lounge (DT St. Pete)
- Gator's (St. Pete Beach - watch out for the big, fat bouncer - he's a jerk)

Dunedin Brewery this Sat!

Hi Guys!

A few of us are meeting up at the Dunedin Brewery on Saturday night, around 9 p.m. Reggae bands Tribal Style and Badda Skat will be performing a live show, and I'll be there with a bunch of friends and a bunch of hoops. Now, I have to be perfectly honest - I've never been to Dunedin Brewery. I've heard great things about it, though. I just don't know how much room we'll have to hoop. I checked out their site, and it looks like there's space outside, so hopefully it won't be a problem. Plus, even if we can't hoop - we still get to drink freshly brewed beer, listen to some kickass reggae music and chill with our fellow hoopers. So, we hope to see ya!

Hoopy Tuesdays

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to let you all know that I host hoop gatherings every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. The majority of the time, we get together at my house in St. Pete. However, we've been known to relocate, if there's something good going on. We've had hoop nights at the Blueberry Patch in Gulfport, at Tamiami Bar in DT St. Pete and at Skipper's Smokehouse on Reggae Night.

So, with that said, tomorrow is TUESDAY :) And we're getting together at mi casa. All of the 'Monsters' will be there, and you are welcome to join us. We will have some new faces there tomorrow as well, so if you've been thinking about coming, tomorrow would be a great night. PM me if you're interested and I'll give you my address.

Also - Hoop Group next Tuesday (4/15) will be cancelled. If the girls decide to have a hoop gathering next week in my absence, Jessica will most likely post an announcement here.
