hey hoopers!, unfortunately the festival scheduled for sept. 4th - 6th will not be happening due to the following reasons.
-lack of financing
-lack of bands willing to play for free.
-loss of key personnel
-world record logistical issues
-I will no longer be raising funds for the 1in8 Foundation and am resigning effective today.

Thank you to all that showed interest in this event!! I am so sorry I could not bring this together for you all!

Sincerely,

Jessica Pascual passes

I just read on hooping.org that hooper, Jessica "Jaye" Pascual, age 20, was found dead on June 10 in Richmond, VA. I hadn't met her, but she had registered for Hoop Convergence and was so excited to come. Her spirit really came through in her emails.

After several exchanges, she wrote saying she needed to back out due to bad timing, ride trouble, etc. I tried to work something out for her. She was so close! However, she insisted too many things were happening for her to make it. Her ticket was passed on to someone on the waiting list.

I was shocked to read the news of her passing and feel so heavy hearted that she wasn't able to come. I know she was present in spirit.

Please offer a wish for peace to her and her family in your next spin.

To choreograph, or not to choreograph?

I have my first hoop performance in 2 weeks at a charity event in NYC. I have only been hooping for 6 months, so I am a bit nervous...but I consider it a chance for adventure, to share my hoop passion, boost my confidence, and help out a good cause.

After debating for weeks over which song to use for my 5 minute solo spot (I had so many great ones in mind!), I have finally chosen one that is high energy, fun, and presents opportunities for tempo changes, different moods, and both simple and complex moves.

so here is my dilemma, should I: 1)choreograph the routine with specific moves and transitions at certain parts, 2) not choreograph, and instead let the music flow through me as I channel it...improvising, smiling, and expressing myself, or 3) do a combination of choreography and improvisation with some moves/tricks/transitions in mind, but plenty of room for spontaneity?

yesterday, i hooped expressively to the track, and filmed it. reviewing the tape, i felt happy with the natural and spontaneous way I responded to the music, and felt there was a decent amount of variety in my routine.

no matter what, I plan to hoop to this song as part of may daily practice from now until the show.
any advice/suggestions are much appreciated. thanks

Happy Memories

Hi all, Thank you so much for making my Hoop Convergence amazing and for being positive beautiful lights. I keep wanting to write a blog post about this experience but I find taking it all on in one chunk overwhelming. So, instead, I am creating a thread for recording happy memories. This way I (and you, if you like) can come back and add memories as they pop up. My friend Junebug did this once after one of our excursions and it was a fun way to relive everything.

Here are a few of my many happy memories in no particular order:

- Getting to room with Revolva, AliCat, Shakti, Spiral and Kara Maia. Talk about a magical room! This was the best camp ever!!!!

- Greeting Urska when she arrived and her saying, "I'm so glad to meet you! I'm your hoop student from Slovenia!" You could have knocked me over with a feather! I remember telling her about Convergence and inviting her and she says she wrote me to say she was coming but I still haven't found that letter so it was a total surprise and a reminder that the world is getting smaller every day.

- Walking the labyrinth with Jaguar Mary and talking about changing the world through service and hearing about her adventures traveling the world with one of my poi heroes, Nick Woolsey.

- Walking through the woods with AliCat heading toward an impromptu jam, then hearing singing in the woods and following the angel voices to find Kelly Timco and her cabin mates singing and playing on their front porch.

- Getting that partner poi move with AliCat that I'd seen on a youtube video and sent her saying, "We should learn this!" Well, she learned it and then we did it. It needs work but we did it! (Ya'll just wait til next year.)

- Coming out of the labyrinth with Jaguar Mary and seeing Anah and AliCat and several other hoopers doing choreographed hoop routines IN CANOES on the lake!!! (I wish we'd been close enough to film it. It was magical.)

- Another walk in the labyrinth, this one late night (after the ball at about 4 am) by the light of the full moon with London. I walked it twice and then, when we were returning to the cabin, it started to sprinkle and it was wonderful.

- Saying goodbye to Revolva and seeing tears in her eyes, which brought tears to my eyes. I love you Woman!!!

- Watching all the eagles soar together in AlleyOop's Native Hoopdance workshop.

- Waking up to Stefan's sweet face beside my bunk handing me a steaming hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning. That's it! He was crushable before but now I am completely smitten.

- Dancing with my flamenco fan at the ball. I was feeling so sassy that night.

- Jewels recognizing me at the fire on the fire night. I was so touched by that. I didn't realize she was going to do it (though I should have figured it out after Ali, Spiral and Revolva all addressed the circle). Still, it felt good and I'm grateful.

- Passing the fire to the first time fire hoopers. I remember everyone I've ever passed the fire to and it is a total honor for me. Here are the words I spoke to each person, "Fire is the element that changes matter from one form to another faster than any other. Use this fire to transform anything in your life you are ready to transform, to release anything you are ready to release, and to create a space for new things to come to you. Your life will never be the same. May you create a place for bright beautiful blessings."

- More than passing the flame, seeing the face and experiencing the first fire dance of so many beautiful people. Those faces will always stay with me.

- Learning my first new move from Malcolm on the very first night of our arrival. It's still one of my favorites from the whole weekend.

- Malcolm's class and his amazing way of encouraging us to find our own moves, rather than him passing on moves. I love how he discouraged us from doing any move that we already knew!

- Learning not one but two new ways to spin off a hoop so that no fuel pollutes the ground!!!

- The roller coaster of Love at the ball! (Thanks Marria and Alicia!)

- Scott's sweet and gentle omnipresence. So many things flowed smoothly because of Scott! It was also a delightful opportunity to pass more time with him and observe the sweet love he and Jewels have together.

- Hugging Kayia, with whom I shared last Convergence and feeling our newest hooper in her belly!

- Learning more cool tricks in Stefan's class than I can even remember. And I so appreciated how he reviewed them all at the end, which helped me at least remember a few more than I would have.

- Spinning hoops on my leg with Revolva! That trick about leaning against the wall to build strength and stamina was a real a-ha moment for me.

- Wendy showing me the moves I missed at the beginning of Stefan's class and then asking me to come to Cincinnati to teach some hoop workshops! I am so doing that! Yay!!!

- Walking through the shady woods on a gorgeous trail talking to my mom on the cell phone on Mother's Day. I love her!!!!

- Learning about sacred geometry with Kara Maia, both in our room and in her awesome class. I adore my love activators and I've used those lessons so many times already!

- Spinning through the chakras with Jewels. That class was a delight in ways I can't really articulate.

- Joceyln's affirmations, meditations and prayers. Her first fire hoop was also stunning and beautiful.

- Spiral dancing in the circle in her beautiful flamenco skirt. She is one of my original hoop inspirations and I am always blown away by her grace and beauty.

- Anah teaching AliCat and I to partner hoop! We've been dabbling in that for years but we never had a breakthrough til Anah's workshop.

- Meeting Fran, Anah's mom. She is so cool!!!

- Sharing mother's day with Anah's mom and meeting Spiral's mom too.

- That class of delicious sparkling wine with Jewels. (Jewels I just bought another bottle of that wine. Thank you for turning me on to it.)

- AliCat singing by the fire.

- Finally getting to share some time with Kelly Timco!

- Rich's sweet compliment about how he'd never seen anyone hoop and poi together with grace before.

- Stefan's sweet compliment about my teaching! (I was struck dumb by it and I didn't even respond but it is one of my favorite memories.)

- Learning how to FINALLY do some of those cool pop moves that Rich does! He's a great teacher and his class was wonderful.

- Watching Brecken dance in the lodge on the very first night.

- Finally meeting Rainbow Michael.

- That first night in the lodge when 10-15 people were all spinning minis at the same time!

- Quinoa and Spinach casserole! (They gave me the recipe! The folks at the dining hall are so kind, conscious and, well, just plain wonderful.)

- Getting dressed for the ball with my roomies.

- Teaching the Fire Safety workshop and thinking no one was going to come because we'd had to move the time and then having so many people come and truly participate and be present.

- Looking out over the students in my hand and arm technique playshop and watching them really getting and looking beautiful doing those moves.

- Meeting so many people who I've known from Tribe and YouTube but whom I'd never met in real life before.

- Watching Stefan pass the flame to Bex, his hoop student and someone who was clearly very moved by the experience.

- My friend Eric showing up to take photos! He's an amazing photographer and I can't wait to see his photos. (He's in Guatamala now but we should get to see them shortly after his return.)

- Spiral's cool workshop on integrating intention and effort.

- Having so many people ask after my bird, Mulder. By name!!! I wish he'd come. He'd have loved it.

- Getting to experience so many first time Convergers having the experience I had last year. (It starts with intimidation and anxiety then moves to acceptance and joy followed by shining and sharing!)

- Watching Revolva and AlleyOop both do their multiple hoop brilliance! It is so cool to get to hang with people who could be in a Cirque show!!!

- Late night discussions on the front porch.

- Watching London, who didn't know I (and apparently AliCat also) was watching her as she walked among the chickens wearing her multiple hoops behind her like a magnificent peacock tail.

- Blowing blessing bubbles.

- Dancing with Melanie at the ball and not even recognizing her in her wig!!!

- Drinking champagne with the girls during the ball! (Next year, must bring more champagne!)

This list goes on and on. I know this is not even close to all but I have to run. I'll come back and post more and I hope you will too! Again, thank you everyone. It would not have been the same without each and every one of you.

No drama

I just wanted to post a topic regarding the convergence.

I can not believe their were 80 plus people( mostly women) and there was no drama. It was so refreshing to see everyone coming together in love of the hoop and being so kind and generous. The night of the Ball I left some hoops, I decided to just go back to the hotel and leave them there. If I lost them ,oh well. I was tired and was half way to the hotel. When I went back in the morning they were exactly where I left them. Now, I am in no way shape or form, saying that anyone would take them ,but I was amazed at how everyone was with each other. I know no one wants to say it but, In some ways I feel like the movie the breakfast club. Some of us under other circumstances and in our own bubble would not have been friends. With the convergence the best thing I have learned is , there are good people out there , who actually care about each other No matter what their differences . When I used to dance , there was sooooo much damn drama and nasty attitude with each other. I have to admit , I thought there might some of this behavior at the convergence, and I have to say I was pleasently suprised , there was not. The teachers were wonderful,so gracious and they were also willing to learn , even from the students. I was blown away.

For the 1st time in my life, for 4 days I did not think about how I looked, what my body looked like, and never even felt one bit anxious. I was in a state of calm ( for those who know me or have met me, I know that is hard to believe ) . My mind was clear, I couldn't stop smiling and I was at peace.

Julia , did a beautiful job,as did all the teachers and everyone involved. I can't stop talking about it at work . My clients are so happy for me that it was all I expected and more..

I mean, I never thought that I would say I took a hoop class and hooped with Anah next to me, wow was I giddy.

Anyway. I had a wonderful time , I loved meeting everyone, and you all have such special gifts . I am so glad to call you my friends.

I have, like, 48 hours to make about 5 hoops for myself, sew a cool costume for the ball, pack all my stuff, and shop for fruit for the car ride down.
why did i do this to myself? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
anyone else out there going to be staying up till 4 am tonight sewing furry kickers for the ball? ;)

I have a LED/Fire combo hoop. You can find information on it at Superhoopers. org. The LED is a SuperMorph and it has a 40/42" diameter. It has been lit less than 10 times. It is a beautiful hoop. I am just selling it to get a smaller size for me. If you are interested please e-mail me at gtines23@gmail.com. The hoop cost me $330 with shipping. I am asking for $200 plus shipping. Thank you and have a wonderful day. -Gina

QUALITY hoops/fire-hoops/LED-Fire-combo hoops FOR SALE

Hello. My name is Gina. I have bought a few hoops before and make my own, because I could never find just what I wanted from someone else. I wanted to let people know the kinds of hoops I offer, so they can see they have a wide variety of options. I make very affordable hoops and will beat any price you find on a comparable hoop. I make practice hoops, regular hoops, and beautiful black-light reactive hoops. I make fire-hoops. I also have Fire/LED combo hoops available. I can help you with any sizing questions, so you get the hoop that is best for you. You have a variety of options. You can get any size hoop, you can pick a lighter version or a medium weight version, lots of choice on the colors and design of your hoop, you pick the size of the wicks and the length of the rods. If you are getting a LED version, we can talk about what color LED's you would like. If this seems like too many options and you don't know the answers, then no worries. You can just tell me your skill level, height, and weight and I will work out what I think will work best for you. I use my own tools and stand behind them. They are quality tools that I feel very confident you will love. I have never seen anyone offer more options than I do, I put so much love into what I do, and I will work with your budget and beat comparable pricing; so when you are ready to buy any hoop, please think about supporting my love and getting the best tool to support yours. My e-mail is igneousGODdess@gmail.com, and my personal e-mail is gtines23@gmail.com (if anyone just whats to talk :) ) Namaste, artisans. -Gina Tines, IgneousGODdess Creations.

P.S. I also have some practice and Fire poi available. Contact me for more information :)

FYI- Jewels posted an updated "what to bring" list on the Hoop Convergence 09 website. Just reading the list makes me so happy! I got all nerdy and starting circling items on the list, making notes, and mentally picturing all the old clothes I can cut up to make costumes for the jams on a limited budget!

Much thanks and love to Jewels from all of us hoopers for her service in organizing this event.
Seriously, this is gonna be the high point of the year!!!!!

See you all in a few weeks!

if we have clothes, cheap jewelry, fabric, etc...are we encouraged to bring it to swap with/gift to other hoopers?

i have some clothes that are too tight that i want to donate...they are not costumes, or even "hooping" clothes (they're jeans, shirts, fabric, etc)
should i bring these?

I live in Richmond, right off of I95 (which if you are drving from up north should be right on your way) and I really need a ride to the convergence. Anyone have room for an extra?? like I said I ride my bike and have no money left for a plane ticket... thanks again. jlp2224@email.vccs.edu is my email if there is any possible way for picking me up!

hey, everyone!

just wondering: are any of you going to both HoopCon09 and Burning Man 09?

I ask b/c it is my first time going to Hoop Con, and I am prob. planning to go to BM for the first time. As i am going alone to both, I am hoping to make some hooping friends at HoopCon that I might camp with/hang out with at BM!

I am from NY, so I am prob. flying into NV and then renting a car. I am driving to Hoop Con, so if you're from NY and want to carpool, contact me.

i want to do to BM alone, but make many friends there!!!!!!!

thanks,adrienne

a cool idea fro HoopCon09

here's something fun we might all like to try:

those of us going to the con could make a hooping video "before and after"!
before the con, make a video of yourself hooping to a favorite song, doing your best moves, and having fun!

then, after the con, make a video of yourself hooping to the same song. it will be rewarding to see how you have grown (maybe you learned new tricks, maybe you "flow" more, maybe you are smooth and sassy, or maybe you just got better at keeping the hoop up!)

though we will all learn more than just new moves at the con, i bet there will be a great improvement from those first videos to the second ones. we can share them on youtube ( or on tribe? can you do that?)

peace and happy hooping,
CAN'T WAIT FOR MAY!!!!!!!

I have a 44in 160psi hoop thats a monster for one person.. would that be considered big enough for two?

I dont know if anyone is going through or near richmond, va to get to nc but if you could make some sort of pitstop or maybe we can meet up that would be awesome. id obviously throw in on gas money. oh and reason is: i dont have a car- i ride my bike and that would be a couple of days if i road my bike.. tehe...

Can anyone elaborate on hoop convercence. This will be my first time hooping with people I did not teach. My husband is going in support for me. and will not be hooping ,but golfing. I need to know what to bring other than hoops and necessities. Can I have my cell phone, are classes all day,can I come and go. I will probablly stay at a hotel,so can you tell me the closest distance to the convergence I can stay . I know I am a litttle pushy with the questions,I am however not famaliar with the area. What about the snakes>>>>>>>>>>>> lol.

Any help at all on the subject would be appreciated. I have already registered ,so I am coming .

Thank U

What to Bring --- 09!

I bumped last year's list of "what to bring", but there are be some differences this year since the event is in May. Hopefully the later date will lead to slightly warmer evenings. If you are registered for Hoop Convergence, You will receive a list of items to bring in an email along with other pertinent information regarding travel as the event gets closer.

Another difference this year is that the event does not happen back-to-back with Shakori Hills Festival. Disregard any lists for music festival (unless they seem worthy for any festive hoop jam which we will be having;)

You have your choice of camping or bunking in a cabin - so IF you choose to CAMP, you will need to bring tent, etc.

I will post a full list of suggestions for this year soon! Feel free to post your own suggestions here on what to bring for an extra stellar time!

In flow,

What To Bring?!

Your needs may be dependent upon your style of bunking/camping and whether you are staying for Shakori, but this will at least get this rolling. I will eventually send out a copy of this to personal email accounts as well since many folks are not active on tribe.

HOOP CONVERGENCE

pillow
linens (unless you pay the $6.50 for linen charge which includes towel, sheets, pillowcase and blanket. You may consider sleeping bag too if you think you may need extra warmth or are tenting it.)
toiletries
head lamp or flashlight
sunscreen (there are a few events and event classes scheduled outdoors)
snacks (There is a co-op in town we will visit on Sat if you want to purchase protein bars or fruit while here.)
comfortable hoopable shoes for outdoors
closed toe shoes (for walking through woods at night)
shower shoes
water bottle
$ for Sat dinner & Sun lunch; snacks; or for other hoop offerings for sale during retreat including Annieland creations, hoops, T's, etc.
yoga mat (I'll try to round up some extras locally. If you happen to teach yoga and have extras, they would be very helpful.)
notebook
pen
readiness to learn & share
open heart
prose, poetry, personal stories & insight

HOOPS: There will be extras available for use and sale, but if you have these you should bring

your favorite, of course
one reasonably strong (160psi) for stretching (Ted's classes)
smaller/lighter style for off the body movements
a set of twins (if you plan on attending twin workhsop. As I said, there will be a few extra sets if you want to try this out before setting out to craft or purchase twins.)

CLOTHING
April is unpredictable here in the South. More than likely, you will experience a range of temperatures from really warm & sunny afternoons to chilly evenings. You may also want to bring some sort of rain gear. Think layers of comfortable, practical & fun clothing! Some special events to consider in your packing...

Sat & Sun~ outdoor jams at Town Commons & Weaver St Mkt brunch
Monday~ special costume or outfit for the hoop hop ball
Tuesday~ fire dance evening

Also remember the clothing/fabric swap. If you have anything fun to trade (hoops, clothing, accessories) bring them on.

FABRIC for Annie's Workshop
1/2 yard of 4-way stretch material (the more bling the better!) & a pair of sharp scissors
(I'm sure we'll have a few pair of sewing scissors here. If you aren't checking your luggage, you won't be able to bring fabric scissors!)

EXTRA NEEDS for event if you have to lend~
wireless microphones
xmas lights
yoga mats or blankets (esp if you're local or driving)

If CAMPING, add
tarp
tent
ground pad

You will NOT need to rent a car. If you are driving here, I believe you will be able to leave your car once you arrive. There are buses to take us to town to reduce expenses and amount of resources used. We will begin to work out carpools from the airport soon.

Any other suggestions? for Shakori?

One month away! Can't wait for this to get here!

The website is up! Check it out!

I name Scott a web wizard!
And Greg (Theory) a saint of cyberspace.

There are still MANY updates to come ----as details, teachers and workshops are confirmed. So stay tuned...

The website was formally forwarded to the 2009 version today, which at first revealed a lot of quirks. However, I *think* we've gotten all on track now. The site has already had a lot of visits...If you have already visited and noticed the missing links=), check back.

There were so many beautiful photos from '08 they couldn't all be included, BUT there are a few in the HC'08 reviews & jams pages.
In flow and excitement,

This week Carrboro Free Press dedicated a whole issue to Hooping in Carrboro. The issue included interviews (with Beth, Baxter, Ann and myself), hoop crafting instructions and many pictures from World Hoop Day & Hoop Convergence.
(Back in April, Carrboro Free Press had included a small piece about Hoop Con and must have had a stock of photos from our Weaver St Jam on Sunday. )

It was great to see photos of some of y'all amidst the local views. Unfortunately, the publication is not fully viewable online, but the outstanding shot of Spiral on the front page is. www.carrborofreepress.com
Also shown inside are
Bonnie & River, Laurie, Beth, Vaughn, Bax, Ann, Julia, Carolyn, Laura Marie, Thunder, Rebecca, Sierra, PixieCup, Nayeli and Tina C!
HARBIN HOOP JAM

Hey hoopers!

Do y'all know about the Harbin Hoop Jam happening at the end of September? It is being sponsored by Patrick (aka Merlin) of PSI Hoops and the lovely Nayeli, one of the Convergers. I hear Harbin Hot Springs is BEAUTIFUL! It sounds like a great retreat without specific instruction, but a cooperative and open space to jam with other hoopers.

It will be a 5 day jam right after the Santa Cruz Hoop Camp.

Date: Monday- Friday, September 29 to October 3rd, 2008

Place: Harbin Hot Springs, Middletown, California

Website: www.playahoop.com

(The following is copied from an invite from Patrick & Nayeli.)

The idea is to have a safe and beautiful space where advanced practitioners can come and jam together. We can dig into the physics of the hoop, deepen into our spiral practice, play together, inspire and support each other, form community, invite the emergence of ….the magic of the living hoop…..

The conference center at Harbin is an ideal location. 2600 sq ft wooden floor, high cathedral ceilings, a great sound system, 2 large private hot pools (room to soak, play, dance and swim and we have had over 40 people in one of them!), 3 healthy and delicious meals a day, all in a gorgeous setting way out in nature. It's a treat.

The facilitators of the jam, Nayeli and Merlin, are not intending to make a financial profit from this. Harbin itself is not cheap and we are charging you a few dollars a day on top of their fee so we can cover expenses for the jam. Merlin is up at Harbin at the moment, emailing you this from there, feeling the vibe and knowing it's the perfect spot.

(The following is an excerpt from the website.)

Note that the Hoop Jam is limited to 30 participants because we want enough space to be able to hoop freely. As space is limited, we cannot guarantee that there will be a place for you, so its advisable to register as early as possible. This is not said as a promotional ploy. If you are really excited by this jam, we would like to have you there!

If you get stoked by this, tell Merlin I sent ya!

Peace and hoop bliss to ya!

Birth Prayer Hoop!

Hi Happy Hoop Convergers!

Before I had Spencer my friends made me prayer flags to welcome his birth. They were a beautiful thing to have hanging in our house while I was in labor, and now they are in Spencer's bedroom continue to remind me of the great blessing of his birth.

This time, I was thinking about making a birth prayer *hoop*, and I wondered if any of you would like to contribute. The idea for the birth hoop is to attach pieces of fabric, maybe 2-3" x 12-24" long (narrow strips) that I will tie to the hoop. The fabric can be just simply a beautiful piece of fabric, or it can be embellished with images or words with paint or markers, sewn with other pieces of fabric, or have beads, jewels or whatever attached to it. Whatever you might be inspired to make would be a welcome addition to this hoop!

I intend to hoop with this hoop in the last part of my pregnancy, and even in labor if it feels right. I imagine just sitting inside of it while laboring, too.

My friends are throwing me a baby shower/ birth blessing on June 21- summer solstice where we will be assembling the birth hoop from the prayer flags they make, so it would be great to have your flags by then.

Thank you so much! Much love to all you happy hoopers!

ps - You can send them to Kammi Matson - 127 E Bunnell Ave - Homer Alaska 99603

Hey everybody!

Stefan, the sweetheart he is, edited a video from the footage Kevin shot during Hoop Convergence. I think he did a kickass job with pulling together nuggets from interviews, classes and jams. Thanks to both these lovely guys for capturing such great moments!

Before we put it on the HoopConvergence website, I want to make sure everyone's name / url is/are spelled correctly. If you have any amendments to make, let me know asap. Stefan gets back from Lightning in a Bottle at the beginning of the week and can change up anything that is incorrect. I'll send this link with a regular email as well since we're not all on tribe.
Circles of Joy and Hoops in Art

Hi All,

I have created a new hoop tribe. It is called Circles of Joy and it is for my friends and students who are studying hoopdance with me, either in a class or workshop setting or online, or anyone interested in integrating dance into their hoopdance. It is a place to connect with other students, review what we've learned, organize outings, plan special workshops, share videos and tutorials, ask questions, order custom sport hoops and groove hoops, learn, share and create community. It is also a place to share hoop related art.

To that end, I spent some time (okay a long time) flushing out our photo album with representations of hoops in art. The selection is pretty eclectic but there are pieces in there dating back to ancient Egypt and ancient Greece. I tried to credit the artist whenever I could and sometimes to write a bit about their process or medium. If, while looking through these images, you see something you recognize, please comment with any information you have about it.

I hardly included any photography. I feel like there's been a lot of good hoop photography and lots of places to post it but there really hasn't been a home for other hoop art. As our Tribe grows, I'm sure we will post plenty of photography and I want to encourage that also but I wanted to start out with other mediums that are not so readily represented. These mediums include architecture, painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery and floral arrangement.

Please feel free to join Circles of Joy and to post any representations of hoops in art that you may run across. Poetry also. I love art and I'm grateful for your contributions. I would also be so happy to have you in our tribe. Here is a link to check it out.

Hello Lovely Convergers!
I just wanted to write a quick note to everyone to say thank you for being so patient with me over the last month. I have been chomping at the bit to be able to get to each and every order you gave me! When I got back from NC I had about 10 orders from BEFORE the convergence to work on. Balancing my Hoopgirl job, teaching, performing, and my Annieland business is fun and challenging, and I really appreciate you all waiting so long for me to get started on your costumes. For the last week I have been sick which has also cause me to slow down all of my work plans. ugh! Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know that I have NOT forgotten about you! I am already started on the convergence orders and I will try to peel through them as quickly as I can. Thank you again to everyone for making me feel like my business is ready to take real flight. I will be contacting you individually once your order is up in my queue. I look forward to seeing some of you at Lightning in a Bottle this weekend! yippie!!!
Much love to you all!

hello to you lovable luminous lit up lanterns

for those that asked for the title of the poem..it is

Hymn to the Sacred Body of the universe by Drew Dellinger

i would write it out but the laptop is buzzing weird vibrations into my ovaries...

on a better note...the universe is not short of synchronisities these days, and drew himself will be in chapel hill on may 3rd.....if you wish to partake in that sort of spinning.

i think y'all are some of the craftiest creatures on the planet, and i am ever so honored to have been within each of your presences.

p.s dont look at my tribe page its not cool.

thank you, thank you...

Hoop *Dance*

As I've had a little time away from the HoopConvergence to reflect and process on the experience, I wanted to share just briefly one of the things I'm left with. My main intention for going to the Convergence was to connect with the greater community of hoopers, and to learn some hot new moves! When I left the Convergence, all I could think about were the new people I'd met. I felt so invigorated and inspired by the people themselves, and the creative collaborative culture of hooping.

When I started teaching my classes again, I thought that I would have a bunch of new moves for people to learn, but I realized I hadn't really integrated a lot of new moves yet (partly because my seven-month pregnant belly is finally feeling like a limitation to trying new things).

But I realized what I did come away with was the possibility that hooping can a fully body.mind.spirit. *dance*!

With that in mind, I've incorporated more free form dance into my private hooping sessions, both enjoying the expansion that the hooping has created, and using the dance to move and stretch more into my own body.mind.spirit. This feels really freeing, as before I think I was subconsciously just focused on learning more difficult and complicated moves. I'm finding all sorts of release in my next and shoulder, in my hips, and in the thoughts and feelings that have been holding things there. And I realize that this release is moving me more towards beauty in my body, from the inside.

So, thanks beautiful hoopers, for helping me find my *dance* again, and my way of moving in beauty! And for helping me see it's not about the "moves" themselves, it's about what "moves" you!

- Next Convergence I will make sure we have music in the lodge! I tried this time but I forgot the power cord.

- Next Convergence I will bring my coffee maker! I need coffee immediately upon arising! I am so not a morning person. They had it in the dining hall but walking there in my jammies is kinda embarrassing. (Not that that stopped me.)

- Next Convergence I will not chicken out about sharing the performance piece I'd prepared for this Convergence! Revolva talked me into sharing it after her workshop and I'm glad or I'd have been totally kicking my own ass. That was the present I'd brought to share but, well, I don't know what happened... Thanks Revolva!

- Next Convergence I will bring MORE mimosa makin's!

I'm sure there's other stuff too. I just have to ponder on it...

What will/would you do differently?

HoopCon mentioned in Boston Herald

Howdy Hoopers!

This is a little off-topic, but still pretty cool. The Boston Herald (the most highly read newspaper in all of New England) did a story on the Boston Hoop Troop in today's paper. One of our lovely hoopers, Alicia, made the front page! They did a full page story on the troop, classes & hooping in general. In the interview we told them about Hoop Convergence 2008 & they made mention of it in the article. YAY! Any way to continue to spread the hoop love is a good thing!

Here's a link to the online article:
http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/general/view.bg?articleid=1089928

Can I also mention that today Ammon & I taught our first hooping workshop since Convergence & it was ELECTRIC! Everything flowed so smoothly & with so much intention. The effects of HoopCon are indeed making ripples (and sometimes HUGE WAVES) in the hooping community. Some of our students noticed a positive change in us! They could sense the love & empowerment that was acquired from hooping with all you lovely people. One student summed it up best when she said "It's just so great to be around people who are just REALLY EXCITED about something. It's contagious!" :) Just thought I'd share this with you all, since you are all responsible for this ELECTRICITY!

Much Love,
-Marria

HoopCon Wow-ing an Audience Exercise

I put this on the Hooping Videos tribe but I wanted to post it here too. These two vids are from one of Stefan's workshops at the Hoop Convergence. I chose this exercise because it's quick and features a lot of the hooper who were there -- over half, I'd say.

The task was to take one trick or movement and embue it with as much emotion and "WOW-factor" as possible. The movement itself need not be difficult. The expression on the part of the performer was the real exercise. Since the music is circus-y, you'll notice most of us went with a circus-y emotion. Anah's is particularly clever and fun but Bonnies wins my heart too. They're all great though, especially for only having a minute or two to practice them and then being told, now we're all going to show each other!

It was a fun experience. The light is not great but you can still see.The guy with the camera walking around is Kammi's husband Kevin. He filmed the entire Convergence and he and Stefan plan to make a documentary of some sort in the future, so stay tuned for that.

Please remember, this is only one exercise from a lot of people with a lot of different skill levels. Still, it will give you a taste of one of the many different exercises we did at HoopCon!

I also want to give big kudos to the organizers (Julia, Caroleeena, Alicat and Spiral) and to the many volunteers who made HoopCon happen. What an amazing testiment to the creative energy and collaborative spirit hoopers possess. We all benefit from events like this and I look forward to next year's HoopCon.

workshop suggestions

caroleeena asked what we would do differently next year, which got me thinking that it might be a good idea to start a thread suggesting workshop ideas for next year.

i have two suggestions...

the first one is for a "changing planes" workshop dealing w/ transitioning from horizontal to vertical planes and back. i know that i, for one, would love some advice on this.

my second suggestion has to do w/ Stefan's characterization workshop (which i totally loved, by the way). i unfortunately missed the last part of the workshop due to car issues, but watching the videos of everyone taking a turn to perform a move got me thinking about music. everyone did their tricks to one song. i think it would be interesting to have fifteen second snippets of songs edited together that represent a vast array of emotions. i think it would be a good exercise to use spontaneous (ie- you don't know what you get before you go) music to create characterization. it would also compliment busking, where you have to think quickly b/c your environment may suddenly change.

My friend Mark Dragon (who played some music for us Sat & Tues and tended the fire on Tuesday) just showed me this video from the Convergence. It is a short clip from Revolva's "Ignition" Workshop. If I remember correctly, this is a dance inspired by the word "zig zag". (Forgive the slight bit of butt crack coming out of my gold pants:-)

Does anyone have a video of bubbles or honey? I loved hooping both of those and would love to be in a choreographed hoop piece called "champagne" with a bunch of other hoop bubbles too!

(This is the poem I prepared a performance piece to and then chickened out about sharing until Revolva prompted me to at the end of her workshop, which was the perfect place for it actually. Thanks Revolva!!! You are totally wonderful and I loved your workshop. It has stayed with me. Both of them actually. Thank you for being who you are. You rock.)
without end
both limitless embrace

We are an atom, I

Thank you to Kammi and Bonnie for leading the Hooping Mamas group and sorry for not being able to be a part of it.

For anyone interested in hooping through pregnancy or conscious birthing, I recommend watching this 10 minute promo for my favorite birth movie Birth As We Know It: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZtYCHASqNM

Here is a wonderful quote about spiraling from this movie -

"If I were to take the liberty of singling out one of the most important things a women needs to learn about childbirth - that would be the spiraling. The actual physical spiraling motions of the body that exists in traditional dances around the globe - bellydancing, Hawaiian hula, Indian, African dance. It reflects the primal basic energy flow in our universe. Seashells, galaxies, our DNA strands all obey the same law of spiraling. It propels our planet to move with enormous speed through space. In childbirth, conscious surrender to that vortex of energy brings in an experience of profound grace." - Elena Tonetti-Vladimirova, Director of Birth As We Know It, www.birthasweknowit.com

Hello to everyone!

After all my anticipation, the universe had a different plan in mind for me last week! I was unable to attend the Hoop Convergence, because Friday morning the 11th, when Kari Revolva and I drove 2.5 hours to the Portland airport from Eugene, we found out our departing flight was 1.5 late due to crew issues. This meant that we would miss our connecting flight to North Carolina. Since American Airlines had so many planes down, this meant that they had very little available on other flights. Our only option was an overnight layover in the midwest and a flight to North Carolina the next night.

Since I was already leaving early on Monday afternoon, because my son Ari's 8th birthday was Tuesday, I decided against the proposed 30 hour travel plan and accepted the flight refund. That was a good idea, because Kari, who was staying for the whole week, took the overnight flight and ended up getting two overnight flights to North Carolina, arriving on Sunday. Despite my eagerness for being with you all at the Hoop Convergence, my intuition was very strong telling me to not get on that plane.

I wish I had been there with you all! The stories, pictures, and videos are confirming what I expected and dreamed for, and even though I wasn't able to be there with you in person, it's okay because I feel so happy just knowing that it happened. I think that the Hoop Convergence is important for the world of hooping right now. This is what the hoop is all about, people coming together, to make the event happen, to bring everyone together, to provide a space for all to teach and share and learn and play equally. To hoop for the sake of hooping and feeling good and growing together.

I am sad that I didn't get to meet all of you in person! Yet! I am glad that it sounds as if there will be a Hoop Convergence next year. I would love, love, love to be there and I'll hope to be there for the whole week to really leave time for the unexpected to pop up and to converge. Depending on the timing perhaps I'll just have to bring everyone next year, as Rob's an awesome hooper too, and Ari has recently picked up just about everything - the hoop, staff, poi, and contact juggling and rocks it all.

I also had an amazing weekend here in the Northwest since I didn't have any plans I had a few days free, and we had the best weather we've had yet this year, it was warm and 80 degrees and beautiful, and I had lots of time to relax in the city, and be at home, and hoop outside. I missed you all but was glad not to be stuck in airports and the Mall of America hotel while this amazing spring sunshine was happening!

So, I'll see you next year if not sooner!

Spinning in bliss, Kara

I'd like to give another shout out to Th3Ory (aka Greg) for creating a BEAUTIFUL logo for the Convergence. Thanks also to Caroleeena for bringing him in the loop and encouraging him along the way! And thanks to Ali Cat for pushing through with ordering the T's. I was about ready to give up on them amidst the other Convergence planning tasks! Thanks to Melanie for picking them up on her way from Asheville! I'm so glad we were able to work them out at the last minute. They turned out better than I imagined and there are only a few left.

There are
2 white t's with black cap sleeves (M)
2 pink t's with red cap sleeves (S, M)

$20 each (+ shipping)

Here are 2 videos showing Jewels & Spirals doing a Sustained Spinning demo during their workshop at HoopCon. The funny thing is that I uploaded these videos & didn't post them anywhere & they already had 75 views or something. Ha! The thing is that the first 2 I posted had no sound because I've been having some technical difficulties. I either get great video quality & no sound or Poor video quality & great sound. Bummer! So I'm going to post the videos that actually have sound here b/c I feel like the sound really takes me back to this moment in time.

Dearest Hoop Convergers~

I think it was Alley'Oop, at the end of the conference, who said that HC made her realize what everyone else had to offer AND what she herself brought to the community. I couldn't agree more. I learned so much from all of you: new movement that I've never before seen, new ways of thinking about hooping/teaching/healing/costuming/choreography, etc. And being able to share my own skills renewed my sense belonging to the circle.

We all have such unique experience and knowledge. To be honest, I never even dreamed that we had *so much* to learn from one another. Together, when we share with complete openness, we strengthen our connection as a larger whole. Hoop Convergence was a five-day-long model of how I wish the world could be.

So thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who attended. Our local juggling club is tonight, and I'm so excited to go practice Shakti's mind-blowing twin hoop moves and Anah's "noble stag" and Spiral's continuous, alternating under arm pass and Alley'Oops 4 hoop split, and, and, and ... it just goes on. I'm also excited to practice sharing and not clinging to what I know. Being open. Constantly battling ego -- with which we all contend -- and knowing that the hoop community is not about any one of us.

It's about EVERY one of us!

It would be awesome if we could hoop together sooner rather than later. I miss you already. Gratitude and mad respect to y'all!
love,
Revolva (Kari)

And it's funny that I came away from this event -- chock full of awesome video opportunities -- with ONLY these two particular videos. I was too busy hooping the rest of the time. But they should at least make you smile.

Once in a blue moon, you experience something so AMAZING and life-altering ~ you truly are in the MOMENT & you realize in that moment that you are having THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE.

That was what HOOP CONVERGENCE 2008 was for me & I think many others can share my sentiments.

60 of the most amazing hoopers ~ all gathered in the same place.
60 of the most inspiring individuals ~ all sharing everything they know ~ without reservation
60 of the kindest & loving people ~ laughing, hugging & building the kind of friendships that usually take years to create

I'm still digesting & reflecting. Words cannot describe the gratitude that I feel for each & every one of you ~ especially those who put so much into make this event happen (ahem...Jewels.. ;) Every time I have a memory of HoopCon, I get chills... or tears...of smiles that flow uncontrollably.

This was the event we were all waiting for. This is the good stuff. The positivity that came out of this will resonate & ripple out to all the hoopers in the world. This was our Woodstock.

Can I hear a "what what" for HoopCon 2009 !!!

I love you all so much!
Our paths will cross again.... and again....

I'm finally close to unpacked from Shakori Hills & the Convergence! Despite the promise I made to myself of a week long fast from the computer, I couldn't resist checking in to see pictures and express my genuine appreciation to each one of you for coming to Hoop Convergence and sharing your unique brilliance within the circle. I will cherish the memories of moments where the beauty of open exchange, enormous smiles and radiant spirits moved me to tears. During the Saturday jam, I looked out over the field at the Town Commons to see the highest concentration of hoop badassedness I had ever seen. The talent was awing, but was amplified by the bubbling joy expressed. Melanie brought her father by who said he'd never seen that many people that HAPPY in one space in 60 years of life. It was abolutely magical.

For a year now, I believed the event would be wonderful, but I truly had no idea just how INCREDIBLE it could be. When Alley Oop arrived the Tues before the event, she said "you don't even know what's about to happen." She was right! I had stared at the event details, logistics, schedules, rosters & descriptions on my computer screen for so long I couldn't see the forest through the bark. Then, suddenly, there were all these beautiful, amazing and talented beings from all over the country (and Canada!) co-creating a sacred space. WoW!

Each individual brought something wonderfully unique to the circle. I've been thinking today about each one of you and how my spirit and dance have been touched by everyone. I haven't felt this inspired in SO long. Not only am I feeling new movements and combinations with my body and hoop, but I feel the truest sense of hoop community I have ever experienced. The web of relationships created by our time together is so powerful and nourishing. I am so grateful.

With anticipation for the next time we meet in the circle~
Jewels

Okay, guess who was at Shakori Hills this past weekend? Moontee Sinquah, THE world champion of Native American hoop dancers. He performed with Keith Secola and his Wild Band of Indians. He is an amazing singer with a beautiful, haunting voice, as well as an amazing dancer -- with and without hoops. I got his performance on tape and, once I find my cord, I plan to upload it to share with you. He's amazing. 32 Hoops. He makes them out of 1/4-inch tubing, connected with wooden dowels and a tiny tail, then taped with duct tape. He was very happy to share his art (he showed me and Spiral how to make Eagle wings with hinged joints -- super cool!) and he was into ours as well and he tells me he might be able to participate in the next Convergence! He'll be down here for Shakori anyway so if we plan it at the same time, well, did I mention "World Champion"? Yeeeee ha!!!

(Look for a video soon. Where IS that cord!?!)

request for HC videos over on hooping videos tribe

There's a request for Hoop Convergence videos over on the videos tribe. If I hadn't been able to attend, I'd also be dying to see some footage. By now, I've seen the few videos posted here and I ran across two clips of Spiral and Jewels spinning (on youtube, thanks to the Boston Hoop Troupe). Since some of this was taped *in class,* I just want to know whether or not people feel okay with it posted to the larger community. For example, here are the Spiral and Jewels videos. At the end of the second one, there's a short pan around the room to show class attendees. It was such an amazing event; I think it would benefit the larger community to be able to take a look at how cool it was. Are you all comfortable with posting such things outside of this tribe? If so, you better find that cord, Caroleeena. ;)

Shakori Hills

Thanks to all you amazing hoopers who were able to stay through Shakori Hills. It was amazing. If you bought a Shakori Hills coffee mug, you'll notice we're represented on it! Twin hooping, no less. I don't know who the artist was but I love those new mugs!

We were also recognized by Jeb of Donna the Buffalo when he was introducing Moontee Sinqua the hoop dancer. Jeb said, "I know all you hoop dancers are going to love this!" (which we did). Moontee did a daytime performance Sunday in the dance tent also that brought him a standing ovation from every hooper in the house.

It truly is a hooper haven. In fact, some hoopers (Jess and Victoria from Alabama leap to mind) came for it even though they couldn't attend the Convergence. Everywhere you looked, there were hoops and hoopers. I so love that.

Maybe next year we can go for the choreographed hoop routine that we didn't get to do this time. After taking Stephan's choreography workshop, that feels a lot more manageable. And hopefuly next time everyone can stay for the whole festival. In fact, I'm hoping they'll give Convergence go-er's a discount on ticket prices! They mentioned that possibility this time. If we try to set a world record, I bet we can make that happen!

Anyway, it was so fun spending some down time with you all after all the go, go, go of the Convergence. You're so lovely.

It's going to take me a couple fo days to get my feet back under me and get my bearings. I just returned from Shakori yesterday and spent most of the afternoon/evening catching up on sleep and cuddling with my animals. I plan to upload pictures and video in the not too distant future but, for now, I just wanted to welcome you all back home and thank you for coming to North Carolina and making the Convergence such an amazing and life-changing experience. Wow. There are no words...

As I sit here on the first night of Shakori with a cold; I decided to upload some stuff from convergence. I had such an amazing wonderful time and I wish I would have been able to make it back on Tuesday or Wednesday but I came down with this awful bug and I am hoping to make it to the festival for at least a day or two. I did not get to say good bye to all you shining spinning people. I am so very sorry but I enjoyed every minute. I truly felt like a kid again! Stupid cold!

So to all of you, lots of hugs and happy hooping until our paths meet again!

Oh and if there's video or pics that you do not want removed please let me know. I don't know what the protocol is for putting this stuff up on the web, I just posted em all.

Here are some of my photos.
I'm also in the process of uploading my videos too.

Community Jam Rescheduled

Julia called and had me post this, since I'm conveniently located near a computer.

This is mostly for any locals who had planned on coming out to the jam. Due to travel days and potential rain, we are postponing the community jam. We are moving it from Saturday April 12 at the Town Commons to Sunday April 13 around 6:30 at the retreat center.

HELP Anah needs ride from airport

So, as we all know American Airlines has (ironically) tape wrapping issues a few folks have been delayed. I think - so far - most of them are covered. However, Anah (aka Hoopalicious) is not going to arrive until 4:10 pm at RDU and that is in the middle of a few classes. She will have to come directly to town. We'll stash her stuff in someone's car when she gets here:-)

LAX 1182
1198 from Austin arriving at 4:10 pm

Anyone available?

Many thanks.

Watcha Bringing ??

Ok.. Please excuse my daily excitment but as "HoopCon" gets closer I find it dominating most of my thoughts.

So today's question is? Whatcha Bringing... besides hoops! LOL... also, being that I am hungry right now .. food is dominating my thoughts..

So at Camp Sierra ~ during down times and/or breaks, and anytother time we find it necessary..... we will be having homemade spicy beer cheese and crackers(no evidence of acholic beverages in beer cheese jewels!!), garlic infested hummus, An emergency energy nuts mix with M&Ms, raisens, and whatever else seems appropriate to through in... packets of Emergenc-C -- super orange of course and fresh fruit.

All are welcome to come by share with us~

HELP- getting spray paint to HoopCon

Yikes!
Just found out I can't bring the big bag of spray paint on the plane with me for the
SOOPER SECRET AWESOME ART PROJECT I was planning on working on down there. D'oh!

Didn't even dawn on me till now, but TSA's website says so clearly... not in carry-on, not checked, no way, no how. I'm so bummed. This is $100 of *special* paint I got just for this and I definitely can't buy it all over again in NC.

Any lovely hoopers driving down from NYC or passing thru here on Friday or Saturday who can possibly pick up the paint? I'll be your bestest friend ever!
And you will get an extra special art gift for your efforts...
