Given the long weekend to honor Marting Luther King Jr's honorable life's work, I have reserved the Carrboro Century Center for a Hoop Jam. As a firm believer in civil disobedience and working for social justice, I would like to dance with others in honor of those who have fought against all odds for human rights. Unfortunately, there are still many battles ahead for individuals around the world.
Let us dance in honor of those who have walked difficult but righteous paths before us; those who currently strive to make the world a more hospitable place; and for those who will carry on this tradition and speak out for those whose voices might otherwise be unheard . Let us dance in gratitude for the beauty that exists all around us and in prayer for a world that is more respectful of all the miracles of life.

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 12:59 PMHey Jewels! I haven't been on tribe in about a month and am happy to have caught this! We will be in town this weekend so I'll see if Burke wants to come too! I hope the new year has already provided you with many blessings! Hope to see you Sunday! -

Re: Hoop Liberation Jam
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 8:56 PMNeidra~ I hope to see you and Burke.
NIcki~ What day are you arriving? Need a place to crash?
Scott & co may play music for part of the time. I hope this is OK with folks. I didn't want to ask them b/c they are always so sweet and lugging around their instruments for free. But today, our good friend Mark Dragon came by and was disappointed that I hadn't told them about it and hadn't invited them to play. So, we may have some improv jams or drum circle to complement the improv hoop flow.
It's going to be a cold day, I hear, but don't let stop you from bundling up and coming out. I think my parents are even coming to christen their new xmas hoops! -

Fri, January 18, 2008 - 8:29 AMWe'll be coming back into town tonight, so hopefully I'll make it (and bring P. and make him actually play with his glow poi, too). He'll actually be more likely to now that I will tell him there will likely be live drumming/music ;). -

Re: Hoop Liberation Jam
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 9:42 AMIt is definitely INSIDE the century center. I just know how it goes when its super cold. I can get stuck in my cozy home;-)
Can't wait to meet your dad, Natalie.
Allison, I'm glad y'all may make it out. It will be great to have a variety of spinning arts represented. There will definitely be live music. I guess I was being silly not inviting the musical part of my community. I forgot that they like to jam as much as we do!
Totally stoked!

Re: Hoop Liberation Jam
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 10:00 AMI just realized that I accidentally mis wrote the time. I have the center from 7- 9:30 rather than 7 - 10.
Many apologies for the loss of the half hour of hoop bliss! -

Re: Hoop Liberation Jam

Re: Hoop Liberation Jam
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 3:24 PMThanks, everyone, for making last night such an amazing evening. I really enjoyed setting a circle of intention and moving together. It was really powerful, for me, to see different circles of individuals come together in our appreciation for the holy day, Martin Luther King day, and our shared love of expression and worship through the hoop. The energy of simultaneous creation between the musicians and dancers was so vibrant, beautiful and exhilerating. I haven't experienced such hoop bliss in quite a while.
Look for upcoming hoop jams in that space. The musicians felt the power as well as strongly as we all did. They are interested in having a regular jam session as our energetic dancing was more fun than a regular bar gig where a lot of folks stand around and watch (or smoke;-). I'm looking into 1 or 2 jam times a month to jam together. I was stepping into new ground in my practice last night and want to experience that kind of inspiration more often. I think I could have gone for another hour so I may reserve it for a bit longer next time!
In gratitude and lingering bliss~

Re: Hoop Liberation Jam
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 2:56 PMJules and onward. The hoop jam on Sunday evening was also for me a new exploration of juice inside my body and outside, watching each individual come from their core and litterally rock out. The motivation of having a liberation, freedom, expression jam was very much felt and I am greatful to have made the conscious connection between my own expressive self and a great leader of our time- MLK.
I agree to the continuation of having events at the CC in Carrboro- where it is intentional- we create space for expressive arts and co-commune both with music and dance. I believe many of us would be willing to contribute a set rate- on order to cover the fee for the rental space.- as oppossed to going to a bar- spending money on cover and drinks- and not really enjoying myself one bit.

Re: Hoop Liberation Jam
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 4:51 PMI agree with all your well made points...
Earlier today, I was discussing the pricing with someone who attended the jam. I didn't quite cover the space rental Sun (but its ok, i had priceless enjoyment) and would've loved to tip the musicians. We were considering what would be a reasonable cost. So, I was considering how much a movie costs, or a cheap dinner in comparison to spending even $10 for music - played for hoopers, in a space conducive for hooping. While I LOVE going to shows, hooping can be problematic, interrupted and DENIED. It's so rare you can throw down INSIDE a venue with a hoop, much less other hoopers.
We're working towards a February Jam. Stay tuned for the date. We are imagining the instrumentation will change each time.... -
