How long!

I've been learning to hoop for about 2 and a half months now. I feel like I have done really well where the hoop exercise is concerned and have defintely progressed in terms of fitness. However... I'm getting a little bit disconcerted as I don't feel I am prgressing in the hoop dance area. I have tried videoing myself and my body just looks too awkward and angular. I wondered if other hoopers could perhaps remember their stories from the early days. How long should I practice a day? How long before I start to get the flow or is it something you either naturally have or...don't :(

Any tips on making the limbs look less angular or just any tips at all!?

Hi everyone. I've started a new tribe called Hoopin' Around where you can post your hooping travel photos. If you haven't taken pictures of yourself hooping in front of famous landmarks or in unusual settings, you should give it a try. It's fun, often a little silly and always increases good vibes in your immediate vicinity. The world could use more fun, silliness and good vibes! It's undeniable that my hoop always puts a smile on people's faces no matter where I go with it. I haven't yet hooped in a place where I don't speak the same language as the locals. But I'll bet you anything, I could make friends and have a good time talkin' the language of hoop! Anyone out there with a story like that? We'd love to hear it and see pictures.

So far, our picture locations include: Arcata - California, Portland - Oregon, San Francisco, Washington DC, Finland and Hong Kong.

Check it out...

Hey lovely ladies (and fellers)!
I just got a message from the guy who helps put on this festival, that is ironically scheduled the same day as World Hoop Day every year.
It looks like a blast and the line-up is great, AND it's close to a lot of you NC hoopers! If you don't have plans for World Hoop Day, you should definitely look into this and we can all celebrate World Hoop Day together!

Trinumeral is a 3-day camping, music and arts festival scheduled to take place from Friday, August 8th through Sunday, August 10th at Deerfield’s Amphitheater, in the Mills River community, close to the Asheville Airport. The retreat is a 940-acre family-owned tract of unspoiled wilderness offering camping, swimming, and hiking. Surrounding the ponds and two authentic cabins, apple orchards and rhododendrons cascade throughout the Queens Creek Mountains. Tent camping will be plentiful, with a secluded family camp ground set aside. Car camping and RV passes are also available at an additional cost.

-LINEUP-
Galactic featuring special guest Boots Riley (of The Coup) Perpetual Groove

There will be classes offered on a variety of topics for folks of all skill levels. This is the first time a panel of hoop dancers has come together to share various insights, skills, movement styles, stories of global outreach and ways of integrating hooping into various realms of wellness (mental health, depression, ADD/ADHD & addiction.) If hooping has touched your life, join us in celebration of the circle and the hoop movement!

There will be classes offered by local, regional, national and international teachers & performers (yes! We are hosting a Canadian hooper too!) I am SO VERY excited to be hosting such a talented panel here in the Triangle. Folks from all over the country will be in attendance - from Oregon to Iowa, from Alaska to NYC, from California to Kentucky!!! Obviously, I am very stoked for this event to FINALLY arrive!

On Saturday & Sunday (April 12 & 13) there will be classes offered in various venues in downtown Carrboro.

FEB 3 Jam

I'm headed to town now to officially pay for room for Sunday, Feb 3.
Carrboro Century Center

$10 suggested donation.

MUSIC

Scott is happy to be co-hosting these jams with me and coordinating music. Hopefully, it will be a little different setup every time. If you know someone who would like to jam on the music side of things, have them email Scott. scottwcrews@gmail.com.

TIME

I'm thinking since some folks may work Monday, that we will begin the jam at 6:30 and run til 8:30 or 9.

PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION 5:30 - 6:30

Since jam time is a personal hoop time, a couple of folks asked about personalized instruction prior to jam. I'm thinking while band sets up 5:30 - 6:30, I will make myself available for personal assistance and hoop related questions. This will not be an official class, but will resemble the structure of a private lesson. When I give privates, I often offer suggestions/answer questions/guide then folks need a few minutes to process and play with suggestions/tips. If we have 3-6 people who want to go for this, it should work well to make the rounds from hooper to hooper. Since I will be reserving for an extra hour for this, an extra fee/donation would be welcome/needed/appreciated;-)

Please PM me if you want to go for this or know someone who would.

I'm psyched to spend an evening hooping!

Hoop Convergence April 208 Schedule/Prices

SCHEDULE (subject to change:-)

Times, arrangements and final teacher details are still being negotiated.
Some classes/activities will be for everyone. There will also be break-out sessions where we divide to meet in smaller groups.

FRIDAY: ARRIVAL

To welcome you to Chapel Hill, NC, we will offer an evening for arrival and orientation. This evening will allow time for a deep breath, casual hooping, nourishing potluck, camp or bunk set-up, meeting other hoopers and orienting for the days ahead.

SATURDAY: THE HOOPING BODY

Saturday will focus on the hoop, our bodies and the relationship and possibilities created between the two.

Circle Up: Saturday we will begin the introduction to the circle with a forum on hoop craft. As the basis of the practice, the hoop, in its varying dimensions, weight, aesthetics, grip and balance affects the experience of hooping. Hoops of differing sizes and weights open new doors for movement possibilities and thus physical, mental and spiritual benefits. There will be time for sharing thoughts on the craft and perhaps make a new hoop.

Movement Workshops: 11 am – 4 pm

Classes on Saturday will focus on foundations, injury prevention (Ariana), flexibility & strength training for hooping (TBA), Handwork (Caroleeena) and compiling a movement inventory (full group activity.)

JAM: Integration time at Town Commons with live music 5 – 9 pm (All ages.)

SUNDAY: COMMUNITY / SHARING & PRESENTING THE DANCE

Sunday’s themes will focus on taking the hoop into the community. We will focus on ways to facilitate hooping in your community, event planning, stylizing the hoop dance and dressing for the occasion.

Circle Up: Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, will host a morning forum with the assistance of Jewels, creator of Hoops for Haiti and Caroleeena who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica. This will be a great time to envision a community event or social service project for your hometown or a sister community.

Circle Up: In the interest of community, on both local and global levels, Alicat, will host a forum on Sustainability and Hooping. You may be able to educate your community with some of these ideas when you return home for Earth Day.

Weaver St Market Jazz Bruch: 11 am – 1 pm

This is a special spot for us Carrboro hoopers, as Spiral & Jewels began a ritual of getting dressed up and taking bundles of colorful hoops to this space to complement their weekly music events. We believe that this has been a key component to promoting the joy of hooping in Carrboro, NC. This event is free to the public, offers great brunch and beverage options and hosts live music. Great for all ages.

Movement Workshops: 1 – 5 pm

Save some energy because we will be going straight from brunch to workshops for the afternoon. Workshops will feature advanced moves (Stefan of Groovehoops), Street Hooping aka Busking (Revolva), Spinning (Jewels & Spiral) and HoopYoga (TBA.)

Craft: late afternoon/early evening

Sunday evening will feature a crafting, trading and costuming event. Annie Weinhart, of Annieland, will offer a no-sew costume techniques workshop in the late afternoon. This will kick off the costuming and crafting portion of the Convergence. This evening will be an opportunity to create, envision or trade pieces of hoopable clothing or patterns. After much consideration, we don’t believe it will be quite workable to have 30 sewing machines in one room, but we will have a few for easy sew patterns in addition to other fun possibilities. We will let you know how much fabric you need to bring for the workshop. Please begin to collect the fun clothing or chunks of fabric that no longer suit you, but may be passed on or traded.

MONDAY: PERFORMANCE

Monday’s workshops will highlight performance aspects of hoopdance. While not all of us are professional performers, each demonstration for a class, group or community event involve some elements of performance and presentation. Let’s face it, whenever we go out to dance with a hoop, we are on display and are communicating with spectators. Hooping is a form of communication, thus considering these elements of the dance is like honing your conversational skills.

Circle Up: Performance Theories, Tips and Personal Stories

Movement Workshops: 10 – 2

Workshops will feature Choreography (Stefan), Engaging an Audience (TBA), Partner Techniques (Ammon & Marria)

Make-Up Techniques: 4 pm

Christine & Patika will lead us through a workshop on make-up application to highlight our natural beauty prior to a super sweet jam. Professional performers and make-up artists, they will surely host an informative and fun pre-ball party.
Full spectrum of needs to be announced.

JAM: Hoop hop set 7 – Midnight (Final details to come.)

With its bumping bass kicks and lyrical flowetry, Hip Hop has had tremendous influence on some of us Carrboro hoopers. This evening will feature live instrumental hip hop jams for your spinning pleasure. This may also be a time to offer a performance to the circle of hoopdancers. Part of the evening will also be DJ’d with a variety of styles of grooviness.

TUESDAY: FIRE

Circle Up: Alicat will facilitate a forum to Compare/Contrast Fire Hoop Designs Safety. Several fire hoop designers will be present to show their fire hoops and tell stories of their creation. Ali will introduce other designs (for some not present) and discuss the differences, advantages, disadvantages, etc. You will also leave the Convergence with an extensive safety packet compiled by Caroleeena.

Craft: After viewing a variety of fire hoop designs and meeting some crafters, we will offer this time for a hands’ on experience of fire hoop craft. This will be a collaborative project as creating a fire hoop is a labor intensive endeavor. We hope to introduce materials, tools, techniques for wick wrapping and complete one hoop to christen during the evening burn!

Movement Workshops: Afternoon

Workshops will feature Fire Hoop practice, Twin Hooping (Jewels & Spiral), HoopYoga (TBA), More (TBA)

Fire: After Dark

Fire Dancing and Drumming~ Gathering around a fire is a sacred, traditional ritual. As humans, we have lost some of our connection with fire in modern times and thus lost respect for its tremendous power of sustaining, transformation and healing. Fire is a powerful element with powers of creation and destruction. We will offer time to initiate, perform and share fire dancing experiences to burn away that which we no longer need and send prayers, hopes and wishes for the future through this dance. We hope this evening will be fiery, fun and ritualistic as we channel our Shiva energies. Incredible rhythms provided.

WEDNESDAY: HEALING HOOP DANCE

Wednesdays themes will focus on Cultivating Creativity, Nurturing Spirit, Healing Potentials of Hoopdance, Working with Special Populations and Social Outreach.

Circle Up: Hooping as Healing Art and Social Service

Writing Your Hoopdance (Revolva), Hooping as Sacred Movement (Jewels), Hooping with Special Populations (Ariana & Laura), Hooping & The Chakras (Tracey), More TBA

Closing ceremonies TBA

We are also including some business and teaching information. Some info will be included in the orientation packet for you. Circle Ups on these topics TBA. More details are being finalized everyday. Stay tuned for teacher bios and more details on events.

REGISTRATION
Full event, five days = $350 (This includes all workshops, jams, forums)
Three days = $250
Day passes = $95
Class or event passes will be released as times are confirmed and may vary depending upon the event. Some events will be free and open to the public.

Febrary Hoop Jam(s): February 24 and Feb 3???

So, after such a sweet jam last weekend, I am eager for (at least) one in February. There are only two options available: Feb 3 and 24. I was considering going for Feb 3, just to get something in soon, but then the Century Center employee informed me it was "Superbowl Sunday." Are hoopers' schedule's affected by superbowl parties and game, commercial or halftime watching? I know the circus troupe Shredder performs with is going to be at the Superbowl - so that could intrigue some who may not usually watch. I'm thinking it COULD have more of an impact in terms of babysitting and all kinds of things. Plus, Feb 3 is next weekend...so not much time for word of mouth to spread.

I'll reserve Sun, Feb 24 and start conversation with musicians.

If several folks express deep interest in Feb 3, I can reserve the spot for that night as well. I would WAY rather be dancing;-)

Given the long weekend to honor Marting Luther King Jr's honorable life's work, I have reserved the Carrboro Century Center for a Hoop Jam. As a firm believer in civil disobedience and working for social justice, I would like to dance with others in honor of those who have fought against all odds for human rights. Unfortunately, there are still many battles ahead for individuals around the world.
Let us dance in honor of those who have walked difficult but righteous paths before us; those who currently strive to make the world a more hospitable place; and for those who will carry on this tradition and speak out for those whose voices might otherwise be unheard . Let us dance in gratitude for the beauty that exists all around us and in prayer for a world that is more respectful of all the miracles of life.

Sunday, Jan 20, 2008
Carrboro Century Center (www.carrboro.com/centurycenter.html)
7 - 10 pm
Open to all skill levels
Dress casual/comfy to superfly
$5 donation for space rental appreciated :-)
Bring hoops or other flow tools. Some hoops provided

I am game for an opening parade to exercise our right to dance in Carrboro if anyone else would like to walk along Weaver St to remind folks how important social movement is!

HOOP CRAFT
Hoop crafting session at Julia's new home during the afternoon prior to jam. If you are lookin' to craft a new hoop or refurbish an old one, come on out. Cost dependent upon materials used. More details to follow in hoopdance tribe (tribes.tribe.net/hoopdance) and by event invitation. You are welcome to get dressed at my place and I would eagerly open my closet for those looking to play dress up;-)

These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!

Injury Prevention/Healing and Hooping ~ "Hoop Convergence" Council

Greetings fellow hoopers~
I am co-planning a HOOP CONVERGENGE in Carrboro, NC in April 2008 (check it out tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence.) In addition to workshops and panels on topics such as hoop movement techniques, costuming, performance, busking, fire dance and make-up, a focus area is injury prevention because we know it is important, as the love of hooping continues its spiraling embrace across the globe, that we are able to sustain our practices into our *golden* years.

I've researched the related threads on tribe and hooping.org archives for accounts and suggestions for healing therapies. We all know about bruises and black eyes, but I am more curious about other types of hoop related incidents that have a more lasting imprint on the body's comfort level and hooping enjoyment or ability.

TESTIMONIALS
I'd appreciate any experiences (with injury and healing) you'd like to share as our council of hooping yogis collaborates to have greater understanding of the human body moving within the hoop.
The following threads include testimonials describing intense knee pain, back pain and intense bruising as well as suggestions for stretches, tips on when/how to stretch and other prevention techniques that I found in the
ARCHIVES OF HOOPING.ORG AND HULA HOOPING TRIBE.

ONE PERSONAL ACCOUNT ~ 2.5 years ago, I was exploring more barrel rolls and angle hooping and just generally hooping A LOT with a maybe 36" d, 3/4" 160 psi hoop and a gazelled & taped 160psi 5 wick fire hoop (Spiral and I got together and drilled holes in the heavy tubing to scale down our fire hoop sizes and weights for greater freedom.) Anyways, I was repeatedly getting this really tender, swollen spot between my left breast and armpit. A friend and local rolpher believed my left lymph node was getting aggravated, probably due to *extreme* hooping. Not long after, I made some hoops out of 1/2" and 3/4" 100psi tubing to decrease the pressure on this part of the body. My fire hoop is also now *super light,* grippy and liberating! (More info on Scott's bomb fire hoops another time ;-) The tenderness is much less frequent- almost non-existent...

Other folks have mentioned ceasing knee hooping or having back pain or having to switch to hooping in only one direction b/c of throwing one side out of whack. Unfortunately, there are a few folks who have had to set down their hoops for extended periods of time or dramatically limit their hooping freedom. After hooping for over 6 years, I do find certain areas of my body require more attention after a long weekend of hooping. Maybe age just requires more commitment to post hoop stretching to relieve the wrists, elbows, shoulder girdle and hip flexors:-)

HOOPING AS HEALING ART
If you have a healing through hoop dance experience you'd like to share, that is a profound aspect of this movement form that we share. There are previous threads on this topic that i posted about a year ago. I do trust that folks will be ok with me drawing attention to those threads here because of the importance and magic shared within them. Some of the stories are rather personal and sensitive, but also beautiful and inspiring.
healerhooperzunited.tribe.net/thr...c6b7
(Can't find the thread from original post in hula hooping tribe right now?)

The date of the first Hoop Convergence will be finalized tomorrow. I've already booked a couple of spaces and musicians for jams and workshops, but i need to finalize a couple more details and compose the *invitation*. As its only 5 months away, I realize the first year may be small, but I believe it's going to be a lovely, informative, varied and FUN gathering of hoopers, teachers, crafters & performers.

Happy Healing Hoop Dancing To All!
In gratitude and revolving joy~

Uniting with the cosmic spirals

Not long ago, I had this experience hooping where I had a vision of - passing. By passing, I mean leaving the physical body and re-turning to the universal energy that exists and enlivens everything, everywhere. The vision was of my hoop spirit guide. She is of light - as is her hoop. She is very present in my day to day life. For instance, if I am sitting listening to music with my eyes closed, she dances with her magically radiant hoop. She moves more fluidly than I and she reveals movements I've never seen or tried. I had been hooping all day at the Carrboro Music Festival and, though somewhat exhausted, I spun my last dance in the space where the Sufis had been spinning all weekend to celebrate Rumi's birthday. I hooped for two songs, then sat down, closed my eyes and opened up my heart with a stretch. Then I saw her, dancing in another realm. Suddenly, I knew that I would join her and that 'Oneness" upon passing from this physical embodiment. It was like seeing the other reality. I was totally comforted and at ease.

I realized, in that moment, that this dance practice allows access to our cosmic essence. I've known, intellectually, that the movement does represent the movement of our atoms and the galaxies- our micro and macro cosmic realities - but in this moment, I felt a deeper understanding and connectedness - as if this practice is training me for another more eternal realm, for passing from this physical existence. I was suddenly at ease with the thought of death. Perhaps I'll re-turn, spiral into, the state that I feel is so divine about hooping - the revolving blissful connection that is attainable for moments at a time here within the dance. What if the eternal existence of passing is our return to the uninterrupted flow of spiraling energies that create the entire universe. This is not to say that the practice is not also training me/us for this life because the practice certainly is on many levels. I believe that understanding and feeling of connectedness is absolutely something to acknowledge and access in our physical existence, psyche, health, relationships and worldly affairs. As we hoop, I do believe we may be able to access this universal power and channel it into our lives in whatever way we need, consciously or unconsciously. I also wonder if in this space, we are able to commune and embrace all those who have come before us - as we create a vortex through our movement. Maybe we can mingle with the spirits of our ancestors, predecessors, grandparents, old friends during the dance.

I'm not sure that words are going to do this justice, but the moment held great significance for me. Lots of people say death is the hardest on the living. The passing of a soul may be the most difficult part for all.

Earlier tonight I began to sob when thinking of a friend's preparing for her mother's passing. I couldn't control the overwhelming sadness, but was not sure who I felt the sadness the most for. I thought of her, her relationship, my own mother, father, sister, love, the empathy, the patience, how temporary we all are and the loneliness felt when our loved ones leave, even if headed to a more peaceful place. I realized I am more at ease with the thought of my own passing than those I love and depend on around me.

My dear friend, Laurie ~ my thoughts and heart are with you and your mother in this time...I look forward to sharing the sacred and eternal hoop space with you again.
~ With love...

Dance as Spiritual Channel

Recently, I've been spending a lot of time reading about dance and other movement practices in my exploration for better ways to articulate the phenomenon we experience as hoop dancers. It is such a mystically healing movement. Here's a quote I read tonight that I wanted to share from "Sacred Woman, Sacred Dance."

"Dance is a spiritual channel, an opening of metaphysical and sensuous doorways. Every dancer knows her goal: to get to that point where the body no longer stands in the way but becomes the instrument of the soul’s expression, the body and psyche working together…A period of training and discipline precedes these experiences, in much the same way as an initiation into any spiritual or mental training ---a type of shamans journey. Gradually muscles begin to respond; the shoulders, fingers, hips, pelvis, neck, and arms begin to move in coordination. Inner and outer worlds fuse, and the dancer moves beyond conscious concern with the physicality and perfection of form. The dancer knows it has been worth the effort to be able to hear the music through her body, to be ruled by the rhythm, to express that which is inexpressible. When we arrive at this place, we are connecting with the music and the mystical and the ethereal, surrendering to a power that uses us as a willing instrument. We are danced."

I suppose I have been 'hibernating' a bit as the weather is cool. I have a few new teachers including a newly crafted pair of hoops, new books and a new drum set of my very own! Oh yes, one of my greatest teachers to date - a pink camo drum set (soon to be covered in faux fur and sparkles as I'm not sooo stoked about the camo.!) There are many projects on the mind and events on the horizon so forgive me if I'm a bit removed. I believe the Convergence is going to take a lot of energy as well as the website I am constructing. I am enjoying the challenges and the readings, but do miss playing in the sunshine...It's all part of the cycle.

Please keep in mind these dates for coming hoop gatherings and events!

Sunday, Jan 20: Hoop Liberation Jam! In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr's holiday, I am organizing a hoop jam since plenty of folks are off work on Monday. I believe the inspiration of equality and liberation (on all levels) is a great reason to commune...More details to come...

April 11-13 (As Caroleeena coined it, the 4-1-1 gathering): NC Hoop Convergence is underway. http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence
Questions, suggestions welcome...

Sunday, December 2: Carolina Rollergirls Bout, Roller Derby at its roughest. I will be offering a peaceful hoop dance for the first intermission.
Hoop Play at Kids' Celebration in the afternoon (details forthcoming)
A Full Circle Fire Dance Troupe ~ 8 and 10 pm (Caroleeena, Alicat and Jewels)

I hope everyone is well and hoop-ful.

So this is super late notice, BUT I am hosting a little gathering this evening at a house off white cross. My friend (the homeowner) has a bunch of clothing and accessories she's ordered from a fair trade company in Nepal, and I have agreed to be available for folks to try them on. They are really beautiful, affordable and according to her, purchased from a very socially responsible company.

However, even if you're not interested in clothing, please feel free to stop in for a glass of wine or tea at anytime. I think it may be too cold to hoop outdoors, but who knows. The spirit can move people to do crazier things. There is also a hot tub!

So - I am going out on Thursday early evening of the festival- and just wondering people's thoughts on camping etc. I know we talked about this a little bit before. But I feel torn on the whole placement of where I camp. I prob cannot afford to bring my car in this year. But I kind of want to pick a newer place then where i have been setting up- I don't know. others' thoughts?

Great Bands for hooping at Shakori Hills

Ok here's the other thread about Shakori Hills. some of us won't be able to camp in the "hoop camp" so let's talk about bands that are worth meeting up at for hooping.

Here are a few that I know are very hoopable and where I will surely be present.

Thurs. 6:30 at the Grove Stage...The Tim Smith Band (most of you know Tim and know he's my partner...I'd love to support him with lots of hoopers there!!)
Thurs. 11pm at the Meadow Stage...The Old Ceramony

Friday 9:30pm at the Cabaret Tent...The Sol Creech Band (Tim is also playing with Sol...they rocked it out in the spring...very fun)

Sat. 10:30pm Meadow Stage...Donna the Buffalo

Sunday 7:45 or 8pm (its hard to tell from the schedule) at the Meadow Stage....Mamadou Diabate (one word says it all..unbelievable)

So those are some bands I will most definetly be hooping to....I'm sure there are lots of other good bands so let's here where you may be throughout the weekend.

It's pretty easy to spot hoopers at all the stages....the Meadow Stage being the hardest. In the spring we all seemed to congregate on the left hand side of the stage...there were less people there and flatter ground for hooping.

Julia...were will your tent (for selling hoops) be set up? Is Viv setting one up too? The hoop tents were also good places to check in if you needed to see where most people would be hooping.

Can't wait to see you all there!!

Carrboro Music Festival ~ Sunday, Sept 30!

Start hydrating yourself on Friday because there will be music all over Carrboro all day! This is one of the best days of the year here in Carrboro. Here's link to this year's tenth anniversary schedule. The day always starts as usual at Weaver st Mkt at 11 am for brunch, then keeps going through the late evening - 10:30 pm show at the cradle...

Here are a few of the bands I'm psyched about.
6:30 - Mosadi Music - Funk heavy Hip-hop Soul, revolutionary Rock at Cat's Cradle
2:00 - Wes Lambe Trio - Jazz Artscenter (Scott plays drums in this trio. Unfortunately not much hoop space, but good music.)
5:00 - nodSense - jazzy/funky/ retro instrumental with a strong backbeat Great Clips for Hair ~401 Weaver St.
5:15 - Tim Smith Band - Soul, Funk, Reggae; original & covers ~ Weaver St Market
7:15 - Jaafar - Meditations on Bass ~ Balanced Movement Studios
2:00 - Zindagi - World beat dance from Middle East, South Asia and other cultures ~Century Center
9:00 - Richard Tazewell Quartet - Jazz with island influences ~ Century Center

Focusing and Listening Workshop September 29 and 30

I teach a mind-body self awareness method called Focusing. Many of the themes cross with what we talk about and experience in hooping -- self empathy, the mind/body connection, being in the present moment , how being in the presence of compassionate others deepens and intensifies our experience. I may have to combine the two in a future workshop!. It is a powerful yet gentle and respectful method of healing and transformation. I have a few more spots in the introductory workshop I am facilitating on Sept 29 and 30 at New Hope Conference Center in Chapel Hill. It does partially conflict with Carrboro Music Festival (I was chagrined to learn) but it ends at 4pm on Sunday and I hope to be out there hooping by 5:30. If you are interested in more information about the workshop or Focusing in general, you can send me a message through tribe or email me at CAPascal@aol.com. Peace, Cathy

Hey friends!
Want a fun portrait for business, play or gifts? Ever seen Pixie's photos online? I've been digging her work for a while here on tribe and turns out she'll be on the east coast the week after Shakori. I am trying to get together some folks who might like a unique and fun opportunity for interesting photos. It's kinda pricey, but if we go in on enough hours to bring her to NC, it should be worth it...

Her site is www.pixievisionproductions.com. It's $200/hr. But that could be worth a lot of shots. Pass on the word to folks you think may be interested...

Christine from CH Herald wrote me today to say the hoop article would be in tomorrow's (Thursday's) paper. Can't wait to see it. I think Tulia's probably going to have a big shot and a quote because she was being her usual sociable and insightful 5 year old self. She really charmed the photographers on Sunday...

Come join me for some climbing at the Vertical Edge climbing gym in Durham this Friday.
This date will coincide with my meet-up so there will be more belayers and skilled climbers available to help beginners. They're all very helpful.

The meet-up is scheduled for 7:30 on Friday, but if you need to get there later that is fine. I'll probably be there until 10:30 or so. We'll often go grab some food afterwards. It's a great bunch of people. They're always anxious to have new people joining and are super friendly :)

http://www.rockclimbing.meetup.com/72/calendar/6341967/

It'll be about $16 for admission, harness, and shoes, but you can also print out this coupon if it's your first time for $2 off.
http://www.verticaledgeclimbing.com/ima....gif

The Vertical Edge Climbing Center
VECC is conveniently located BEHIND the Kawasaki-Suzuki of Durham Store on US Highway 70 East (US70).
Raleigh, NC 27617
919.596.6910.

Note: Vertical edge can be hard to find for the first time (have their # 919-596-6910 handy in case you get lost), if you're coming on us-70 west then look for the neon piano sign shaped like a grand piano on the right, you'll see the white Kawasaki building to your left. Take the next left and do a U-Turn back to the Kawasaki building and take a right into the parking lot. Drive straight through the parking lot towards the back of the Kawasaki building and Vertical Edge will be to your right at the back of the Kawasaki building.

Jon Silver

General Admission $20 BUT
FREE admission with your HOOP!!!!

Do remember this is a benefit, so donations will still be welcome. However, she is excited about what us hoopers and extra hoops may bring to the event.

I will be in Hillsboro for another fund-raiser for human rights at 6 that evening, but will show up for the early part of this benefit and maybe even return for the end. I am also willing to lend out some of my play stash of hoops for anyone who would like to be responsible for them while I am gone.

Please tell your friends!

Nurturing sexual, sensual energy through hooping, a blog entry

Hello, everyone! I am Amy, a sexual embodiment coach and sex educator in Carrboro. I am new to Tribe and have been lurking here in this group for a while. I keep a blog professionally and write on different embodiment practices which can nurture sexual energy, and this week I wrote about hooping: http://embodiedsexuality.blogspot.com/2007/09/sexual-embodiment-practice-hooping.html I would love to have some other voices over there about ways in which hoop dancing nurtures your sensual, sexual selves, so feel free to join in the conversation! I have already had several readers (both in NC and elsewhere) tell me that hooping sounds like *just* the movement practice they have been looking for, so feel free to pimp out your classes, jams, hoops for sale, etc. in the comments!!!

Scott & I are thinking of getting a couple of percussionists together for Thursday evening. According to the website, Weaver St after hours are over for the season. I'm wondering if we could get away with drumming on the lawn from 6 - 8 since folks are still used to live music being there. If we get kicked out, we can always walk/ride down the street.

Anybody interested? Friday night is also a possibility.

is gaffer's tape really necessary?

I have been making all my hoops with 100 psi 3/4 inch tubing (perfect for me) and with nothing but vinyl and sparkle tapes. I keep reading about gaff tape for grip - how necessary is this? I've been avoiding it because of the cost. Will the grip really improve my dance? Be honest with me here, folks - do I *really* need a $10 roll of tape?

Thanks guys

Fire Show CANCELLED!!!

Well, we knew it was a risk, , But....
Bummer : - (((((

Fire is prohibited at the Forest Theater. Donovan, Jan, Ali & I had a meeting about this earlier in the summer to consider our options
~ask for permission vs
~ask for forgiveness
The puppeteers were in favor of the latter since their contract explicitly states - no fire AND no show after dark. This means there's no avenue for working it out this season. We have insurance so may be able to get permits in the future, but not in time for this weekend's show.

Somehow (maybe N & O write up) the folks in charge caught word of our act and have EXTINGUISHED us for this weekend.

I am crossing my fingers that we can burn the weekend in Raleigh at the Museum of Art (Sept 8).

Many apologies

Paperhand Puppet Intervention (and Fire Show!)

Ahhh Yes. It's late summer which means it is time for the annual puppet show at the Forest Theatre in Chapel Hill. It is a wonderful community event each year for folks of all ages. The music is absolutely divine. The puppets ~ magical. The stories ~ insightful for all ages.

The past 2 years I have been grateful to be a part of closing fire ceremonies for Paperhand. It is my FAVORITE spot and event I have fire hooped to date. This summer, AliCat, Caroleena & I are spinning to close the Saturday shows as "Full Circle". (Except for the weekend of Sept 1 and 2.)

Plus: Don't forget that each night there is a different pre-show starting at 6:20 featuring a variety of local musical talents.

8/10 Shannon O' Conner
8/11 New River Rock Skippers
8/12 Jef the Mime
8/17 Jubal's Jubilee ***
No, not the one with the books, the one with the booz.

If you're having any desire to revisit your college years, they are also playing at a frat party on Thursday. I never went to frat parties in college, but I'm considering crashing this one to see what I missed. Maybe I can be on hoop and young girl protection detail. OR maybe I can do my first keg stand while hooping...

Vivian Spiral & I are headed to Floydfest the weekend of July 27. Spiral has been working/playing at this festival for a few years, but this is my first time. I'm pretty stoked b/c I hear this festival takes place in a beautiful venue and hosts great world music acts. Surely, we will be hooping & grooving all weekend. We are also scheming a pretty exciting booth with not only hoops, but potentially fun hoop accessories. There was mention of some other local hoop dancers traveling to commune. It should be a good time. Scott can't go so if anyone would like to carpool, I am down to leave Friday.

In case this information has not been posted yet....
I visited the Green Space recently and met one of the founders, Sammy Slade. This is a Carrboro dream come true. I hope we can find a way to save the space and/or continue the mission. Send your good hooping energy!

Hopefully Yours,
Tracey

* A group of Carrboro residents is currently fighting to save 10.5
acres in the heart of downtown Carrboro from development. The
Greenspace currently houses the ReCyclery, WITT, a walk-in
theater, and are working towards establishing a space in which
community, sustainability and hope can thrive. Your help is needed
to make this a reality!!

FLOW: A Psychology of Optimal Experience

A friend recently turned me on to this book by Mihaly Csikszenthmihalyi that discusses flow experiences and how they contribute to a deeper satisfaction and sense of meaning in one's life. He defines this concept of flow as "the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it event at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it" (p5.) Flow is a state of mind where "consciousness is harmoniously ordered" (p6.) Since flow is becoming a way some hoopers describe their experiences within their best hoop moments or a hooper's ability to move with a mesmerizing seamlessness, I thought this book would be fun to introduce here. I am so fascinated in the phenomenons of hooping; how we achieve these, sometimes ecstatic states through engagement of our physical and sensory skills; and how those moments of challenge and satisfaction spill over into a richer understanding and deeper enjoyment of our lives. This book is the first I've seen that discusses these ideas more fully by comparing athletes, artists, poets, yogis, scientists, musicians, dancers and mystics. I'm just now delving in, but thought I'd post a little from the book. Joint book reading, anyone? (Goodness, I'm kind of dork who misses the certain aspects of school tremendously! But there's not a master's degree available in hooping at this point. So individual readings will have to stand in...)

"Contrary to what we usually believe, moments like these, the best moments in our lives, are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times...The best moments usually occur when a person's body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile. Optimal experience is thus something that we make happen. For a child, it could be placing with trembling fingers the last block on a tower she has built, higher than any she has built so far; for a swimmer, it could be trying to beat his own record; for a violinist, mastering an intricate musical passage. For each person there are thousands of opportunities, challenges to expand ourselves.

Such experiences are not necessarily pleasant at the time they occur. The swimmer's muscles might have ached during his most memorable race, his lungs might have felt like exploding, and he might have been dizzy with fatigue - yet these could have been the best moments of his life. Getting control of life is never easy, and sometimes it can be painful. But in the long run optimal experiences add up to a sense of mastery - or perhaps better, a sense of participation in determining the content of life - that comes as close to what is usually meant by happiness as anything else we can conceivably imagine."

According to MC, this "optimal state of inner experience is one in which there is order in consciousness. This happens when psychic energy - or attention - is invested in realistic goals, and when skills match the opportunities for action. The pursuit of a goal brings order in awareness because a person must concentrate attention on the task at hand and momentarily forget everything else. These periods of struggling to overcome challenges are what people find to be the most enjoyable times of their lives. A person who has achieved control over psychic energy and has invested it in consciously chosen goals cannot help but grow into a more complex being. By stretching skills, by reaching toward higher challenges, such a person becomes an increasingly extraordinary individual."

In his other book, Finding Flow: The Psychology of Engagement with Everyday Life, MC describes flow experiences as "the flashes of intense living against this dull background." A person in the zone, or in the flow is completely focused with "no space in consciousness for dsitracting thoughts, irrelevant feelings. Self - consciousness disappears, yet one feels stronger than usual. The sense of time is distorted: hours seem to pass by in minutes. When a person's entire being is stretched in the full functioning of body and mind, whatever one does becomes worth doing for its own sake; living becomes its own justification. In the harmonious focusing of physical and psychic energy, life finally comes into its own" (p31-32.) He also argues that it is the "full involvement of flow, rather than happiness that makes for excellence in life" (p32.)

I resonate with these ideas so much as life has so dramatically changed since I began hooping. While I've always engaged in a variety of 'flow' activities, there is no other practice that has so profoundly affected my course in life or my understanding of my place in the world. I'm deeply curious to hear how others reflect upon their own experiences of flow. How do you achieve flow in your hooping? How do you interpret this flow? Does it affect your general sense of well being? Has it altered your perception or expectation of life? Or any other reflections you may have to share...

(A re-post from something I wrote recently wrote in "hoopflow" tribe...)

I am SOOO excited that I was hired by UNC to teach weekly hooping classes at their wellness center. Right now I have a class for mom and child and an adult hooping class.

Wednesdays 4 - 5 pm Mom & daughter/son hoop class
Wednesdays 5:30 - 6:30 Adult hooping class for beginners

In the fall, there should be a class strictly for older kids (8 - 12) during afterschool hours and a second adult class as folks begin to progress in their practice. I'm hoping to teach a hoop course for college credit soon!

Kimowan & Healing Hoop Dancers pt 2: viewer's perspective

While the vicarious experience can't match dancing with the hoop, I am sure we all feel quite inspired and even tickled by watching the flow of others. I have had a few moments witnessing flows of my hoop brothers and sisters (in person and on video) that have totally taken me to an alternate universe that is both embodied (as my body wants to emulate and begins to wiggle) and somehow a transcendance of that reality. I have been moved to tears in a couple of moments. A few years back when I began hooping, I was reading a book about HIV in Haiti which began my interest in the political and social history of this country that lead to two visits. An image was painted of this extremely dark hospital situation where folks were laying around without hope of medicine or much care and seemingly waiting to die. Moved and saddened by this situation and the following circumstances of kids orphaned by this tragic reality produced this vision of hooping in medical centers and foreign lands. I had a theory that the viewing of the dance have healing potentials.

There have been a couple of instances in my performance career when I have been approached with some powerful revelations and connections after a dance that validate this belief in ways I hadn't imagined. The spiraling hoop gnosis (as well as other flow arts) is entrancing and that state of bodymind must possess the power to call forth memories, facilitate release and promote healing or growth. I wonder if anyone has experiences to share in this realm. This certainly is not a question addressed to performers with a capital P, but to anyone who shares their practice with others and receives relevant response. I'm deeply curious about this aspect of the dance.

As my dear friend, Kimowan rests in a hospital I wonder if witnessing a hoop flow would relax him in any way. He is recuperating from a surgery and is having a lot of pain and lessened movement in one half of his body. I wonder if watching the soothing flow of a slower heavier hoop or a slow and controlled vertical hoop flow would relieve him even if temporarily. When we moved him over a week ago to a private room I remember recalling and even posting that there was space for a small hoop in the room, but I don't know if anyone's tried. I made him some magical chicken soup loaded with garlic this evening and am waiting for the word that I can take it to him to help boost his immune system. Maybe I'll take my hoop just in case. It seems possible, since he is an experienced and talented hooper, that his body could respond to witnessing hoop movements without his conscious engagement or thought.
