Tue, March 18, 2008 - 12:06 PMwho else (like me!) is broke, and most likely won't be able to join this contest after seeing the criteria?
don't get me wrong, i am beyond impressed at the thought and foresight Christabel put into this contest.
i just don't know if i can afford it. :(

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 1:21 PMMe. :( I do not have medical insurance right now and therefore can't go get a weight verification, nor a check up to participate. I, too, will be doing this on my own just to prove to myself that I can.
I, too, am very impressed that Christabel thought of the challenge and hopefully there will be others who can go forth with it. I'll be rooting for them as well. -

Tue, March 18, 2008 - 12:44 PMI am living in Guam right now and we don't get the New York Times out here. I hope that the local paper with the date on it will still allow me to enter the contest! I would love to teach Hoopgirl classes here, this island needs some flavor.

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 7:15 PMAnd I thought I was the only one with this exact issue... But I NEED a motivator. We talked about it and my husband-jewel that he is-said that if I feel that this is for me, to just order the hoop. So it is on its way and I am on the road to the body of my youth.
I hope

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 9:28 AMHello again everyone. WOW what a response. First of all, I am very concerned that some people may not be able to participate for money reasons. Can we clarify what the challenge is? I want to enable everyone to participate!
It seems like getting the doctor's verification of weight lost is the challenge? What about going to a nearby free clinic?
I also welcome anyone else's ideas about how to verify weight loss. I was wracking my brain and this seemed the only verifiable way. But I'm open to ideas? Photos of a scale don't work because you can't see the number and the full person at the same time.. perhaps they could be holding something or scale tuned incorrectly.
As far as getting a hoop, yes, you do need a HoopGirl hoop to participate... perhaps a 10% off discount code for those purchasing specifically to enter the contest? Let me know your thoughts.
Smiles
Christabel

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 9:30 AMp.s. Also just wanted to let you all know, the reason we need you to use one of our branded hoops is obviously because we want to feature you as someone who was able to achieve these results using our products... it wouldn't be possible for us to also benefit from the contest without having you do this... thanks for understanding!
Perhaps someone in your community has a HoopGirl hoop you can borrow? Just trying to think creatively here.

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 6:35 PMChristabel,
I don't mind buying one of your hoops, although I make my own, or I would go broke with as many as I have. I like to have different colors and sizes for different things. However, I would LOVE to buy one of your hoops! I already have both of your DVDs (love them), but money really is an issue for me. I am am sure I can get my parents to buy me your hoop especially if it's for weight loss. They want me to be healthy. However, I have tried getting free medical, but I make too much (most places won't help you if you make over $24k per year and I am just above that mark at $25k) and being I am a single parent, I cannot afford to go to the doctor and pay a full bill, sicne I own a house and have utility bills to pay as well as a car payment. As for the paper, just out of curiosity, why wouldn't a local paper work? My dad gets the local paper and then just throws them away. I don't think he's going to buy the NYT for that. However, my biggest issue is the weight verification, though I understand why you need it and why a photo of the scale will not work. I'd love to participate if I could. I really wish I had the money to get the weight verification, especially since the challenge is worth so much and I'd love to be a certified HoopGirl! But I don't. :(

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 9:07 PMi'm also a bit confused on the 'judging' (for lack of a better term here) - if everyone wins, why the breakdown on what counts for how much?
i know there's already the 20-49 loss range and then the 50+....are there different levels of awards past that?
i'm still trying to figure out if i can swing it. goddess knows i'd love to!
also, does Candice (portland, or nia studios, i think?) carry your hoops at all, especially in larger sizes? saving on shipping would definitely help from my end. -

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 3:59 AMMy question... no mention of the dvd's. They would be required I would imagine since it would be following your classes.
Could pics holding them be acceptable instead of a hoop, since they would be unmistakably identified as yours ?
Hoops aren't as identifying as that would be imo.

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 8:40 AMCristabel.. just a suggestion, but how about a sighned form for verification from a health club or YMCA. I know YMCA's have trainers there and fitness exams that are free for memebers. With that said, I also, know that all YMCA's have free or sliding scale memeberships for those who cant afford to pay. So, provided that there is one in the contestents area... that might be another option.

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 3:39 PMHi there! Here are some answers to all the questions coming in...
Yes a signed verification from a certified employee trainer of a health club or YMCA would be fine (please include contact information for trainer), as would be a Weight Watchers weigh in (someone specifically wrote me and asked about that option).
Yes, holding a HoopGirl HoopDance For Beginners DVD in your pictures would be just fine if you want to base your weight loss experience and story on that instead of our hoops! In fact, we would PREFER that most of your stories are based on using our DVDs and that could alleviate the whole concern for many about having to get a HoopGirl Hoop.
We are not accepting photographs of the scale is because it is not an accurate or verifiable way to document weight loss. There are too many variables.
We are unable to base the contest only on before and after photos is because there is a HUGE award value which is being given. While I would love to give everything I do away to everyone, we need to be keep it verifiable as a big reward for a big achievement (This helps it also make sense for HoopGirl as a business). I decided that limiting the biggest reward to those who have achieved the highest weight loss would keep it manageable.
Candice does not sell HoopGirl hoops, but she does sell HoopGirl DVDs.
It is customary for fitness contests of this type to use New York Times newspapers to document the date. We have gone along with this custom since it is the norm. I think they cost less than $2 per newspaper so it should not be a big investment. ($4 total for before image and after image.)
Let me know if I can answer any more questions! Have fun!
;)

Fri, March 21, 2008 - 5:00 PMAwesome, thats very doable then for me. I believe there is a certified trainer at the gym I go to.
Running to go get the dvd's...

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 6:18 PMI certainly think this is doable for me, then. I'll have to contact some places to get a weight verification, get a NYT and I will be sure to hold up my HoopGirl DVDs! Thank you, Christabel! :)
Is there an official start date? -
-
Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 10:28 AMthe start date was actually last week...the 13th I believe...but I am not starting til tomorrow (since that is when I am getting weighed and taking pics)...so I don't think it's a big deal...especially if you don't have as much weight to lose.
good luck guys!!!

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 6:47 PMSo I am excited because after a few days of mulling it over, I have decided to join the contest too! I have about 30 pounds to lose so I won't be getting the free training (darn!), but that's ok...I will still be stoked to lose the weight and be a part of it all!
So does anyone think we should start a tribe for the people doing this? you know for moral support and tips and stuff? -

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 7:20 PMI am blogging about it as a way to keep myself from cheating--like after dinner tonight I REALLY didn't want to have to admit that I had ice cream--so I went for no fat yogurt instead.
Happy to have the company!

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 1:23 AMI think that's a fantastic idea, Jennaluna. I will join if you or someone else has the time to be a moderator (my internet connection here in Guam is too iffy for me to volunteer to moderate). I'm so glad that there no limits on the prizes, so we aren't competing with eachother. I really appreciate this positive motivation to achieve my personal best. -
-
Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 1:45 AMi guess i would be willing to moderate...i am not sure how much time that takes...it won't be a huge group, so it shouldn't be too bad...i am just about to get really busy with work and school...and hooping of course...haha
but yeah i would be willing to do it...unless Christabel would prefer someone from HoopGirl to do it...you know, in their spare time ...haha -

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 10:13 PMGOOD LUCK LADIES -- I just wanted to tell everybody... that when I started to hoop... it was a real rough time in my life and I didnt start hooping to loose weight... but one thing that really inspired me was Christabel's story..because it was similar to mine. I was 180 + pounds at that time, feeling horrible about myself and totally hating my body. Then I looked at Christabel's body... finding it very hard to believe she too had been equally as heavy... and I had faith that I could break the 2 year plateau I had been on. The weight started to fall off.. I couldnt believe it. If you check past archives.. I made some post questioning how normal this was.... I was really in shock at the ease of it....
It's too late for me to join HoopGirls challenge.. but I would like to share with you... via hooping... and hooping alone, I have lost 27 pounds to date and more importantly for me, 5.5 inches off my hips and waste respectively. My quads are starting to get cut now... I can see ab muscels developing, my delts are cutting.. incredible changes are occuring! I have gone down from a size 14 to a size 10 and still have some room to go! All of this without killing myself on a daily basis....
So I know if I can do it at age 37 (almost), I am confident that you all can too! If you need support or are having a rough moment... you can always send me a PM.
Im so excited that Christabel has put forth this challenge! I owe a lot to her for sharing her story which gave me the gift of belief... Good luck too all of you who embark on this journey!

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 11:02 PMwow Rebecca that is AWESOME!!! I too was inspired by Christabel's story and am looking forward to having a story of my own. I just think how cool it would be if more people realized that hooping is a GREAT form of exercise and it's fun and great for that mind/body/spirit connection....and I am stoked that HoopGirl is going the distance to make that more known...
-
Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 9:36 AMWow, Rebecca!! Thank you so much for posting this. I admit that I was intrigued by this contest, but I wondered if Hooping could actually do this for a person! I've just been lurking around here because it looks like so much FUN to do this, but it's great to know that people are really getting a health benefit from Hooping, as well as the fun part : ). I appreciate your sharing.

Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 9:59 AMRebecca, thank you so much for the added inspiration and testimonial. I know I've got to get my rear in gear over here and get started full force on this and stop allowing myself to put things off due to stress and "not having time." I love it so much and do it every chance I get, but getting in an entire session seems impossible lately. I know I have asked you before, but how long did you hoop each day, on average? And do you know how much you ate or did you just eat what you wanted? -
-
Re: Win $1000 Worth of HoopGirl Training and Products!
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 11:45 AMEcho... as I have shared with you before I was going through a nasty seperation..so my memory is really unclear as to how much I hooped in the beginning. I hooped when I was angry, I hooped when I was stressed, I hooped when I got home from work, I hooped when I didnt feel I could go home. Easier to say... I hooped! With that said... I didnt usually go for long sessions at a time, rather multiple times through out the day, 10 minutes here 15 minutes there. What I can say is I was not hooping hours on end on a daily basises, especially not at first, but I was hooping 5 - 6 days a week... at shorter intervals.
Somewhere around November, I think my hooping changed. I wasnt hooping as much.. my practice got less as things calmed down for me in my space / world... however when I did hoop it was for much more extended periods. Weekend workshops in Ohio could prove to have 3 - 4 hours of hooping a night for several nights straight. So while I wasnt hooping every day.. I was hooping for extended periods of time.
Now.. I try to get in at least 3 - 5 hours of hooping a week. I still have a problem having it everyday .. but try to break that up into 3 days a week. A more regular schedule.
Im not saying by any means...that it should be done like that.. it is just my hooping history. I would say, listen to your body. I made mine very sore... from excessive hooping at first.... but there are time when one NEEDS too hoop wheather the want too or not.
---------> Eatting --->
Well I have always eatten well. I gained weight (first time in my life) when I was pregnate. Even then I ate well, just too much pasta, bread, and Starbucks orange/cranberry or pumpkin muffins!!!!
I eat about an 80 - 85% vegetarian diet. Fresh, bright veggies are my favorite. I use olive oil, real butter and very whole grain foods. Essentially, I almost never eat fried foods.. I dont do fast food, I eat lean protein when consuming flesh, otherwise I get protein from tofu, wheat meat, beans, eggs. I read my labels and try not to purchse anything with corn syrup... ( you wouldnt dream the things that they put that crap in!!!) and well I try to stay away from refined sugars. I use either brown sugar, honey or in my coffee... I do use Splenda. In fact that is my only artifical ... I do use. I stay away from all aspertain products, not that I am convinced splenda is much better, but it does taste better.
Other tricks I learned.... eat protein in the morning! you will stay fuller longer.. and you must learn to eat breakfast!!! Eat a hand full of nuts 30 minutes before lunch and dinner. Drink more water.. keep low sugar dark chocolate around for sweet attacks. This is best with the dark chocolate chips in a bag. you can grab some with nuts... and it satisifies the sweet need without consuming too much.
All of that said.. these have been life changes for me.. not a "diet" change for me. As I started to loose weight, I ate less. As I ate less processed things like bread and pasta, the less I craved them...etc. This was not an over night thing. It has been one small step at a time... but give yourself permission to have what you want.. just not all the time and base your decisions as choices for your life, not choices for a diet, or in this case, for a monetary reward. Im still in the process of learning to love myself and being comfortable in my own body. ... of course... truthfully I had that problem with I was 130 pounds..
So without a novel here.. Ladies..my best suggestion is Love thy self and honor thy self. When you make decisions that treat you like the goddesses you all are... then the rest will take care of itself. -
