It is very similiar it looks like to Tribal ( ATS )Belly dance move named camel.
Facing straight ahead ,1 knee bends while other extends straight out , I was taught never to put weight on the leg extending as it can compromise the knee.
With the electric slide ....how is the weight distributed ( and angles of the legs) and any way to keep from plopping on the knee to get it on the floor position ? It looks like from the video there is a angle more to the left side rather than straight to front as with the Camel movement.

Got a couple of questions for you LED hoopers out there.

1) If you had a choice, what would do you think a LED hoop needs to make it just awesome great?

2) Which is better, non-changing LED light patterns or changing patterns of colors?

3) If you could control the color changing, would you prefer the ability to interactively change the patterns while you are hooping or pre-program the patterns?

4) If during hooping programming is important to you, what would you consider to be the best method for changing the program, finger-tip (4) buttons on your hand or by changing the speed of the hoop (accelerometer sensor)?

5) How important is programming LED brightness (a, b, c, d)
a. very bright,
b. moderate bright,
c. bright,
d. dim

6) Would rechargeable batteries be useful?
7) Wall wart recharging and/or cigarette lighter recharging?

8) How many LEDs are good? (too many can be just as ineffective as too few).

9) Are there any suggestions which you would like to make regarding LED hoops in general?

I hope I am not pestering you all too much with these 'doh' questions.

Seeing as there are so many of you who wanted to be a part of some kind of challenge, but didn't have 20-50 lbs to loose, I was wondering if you have any brilliant ideas about a contest to create.

Our goal is obviously to create wonderful testimonials which we can use to promote our products online and in ads, etc. Even though *we* know the results of HoopGirl hoops and products are MUCH more than just physical, these sorts of stories do appeal to 99% of the people out there shopping for fitness products.

I am open to other ideas that would open up another contest to others, which could create testimonials of some kind which could also be useful.

Perhaps something around how use of HoopGirl hoops has helped seriously change/improve some medical, psychological condition, injury, life situation?

I think we need to keep the teacher training award for the first contest because loosing that much weight is a HUGE achievement... but we can create something with a substantial prize to award the winner/s of this contest.

Please share your ideas and let's see what we can cook up!
Harmony's hoop rolls down and i like that, plus rechargeables (sp?) are a plus in my book. Super hooper is way less though. Help me out PLEASE!

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!

Hi everyone, my name is Melinda and I had the opportunity to meet and be awed by Ms. Christabel at the Zumba Instructor workshop in San Jose. I was the hula hoop girl growing up! I am so excited to learn how to incorporate this into my new fitness world. My step into the fitness world as a 40 year old single mom has been the 360 of my life. I lost my mother 4 years ago, divorced, and moved from Georgia with my kids and 2 beagles in tow two years ago. I stopped playing tennis and put on 60 lbs. I was lucky to find Zumba last August. It preserved my life and filled my spirit. When I saw Ms Christabel, my spirit took flight AGAIN. I have started my own company BAJ Fitness (my kids’ initials) teaching Zumba, Hip Hop, Jump Rope and very soon hooping. I am also working towards a degree in Exercise Science. I just want to promote health and wellness that is FUN as it will save my life and would have saved my mother's life. My sister is joining me in this journey to which I am ever thankful. I hope to be a liaison for Hoop Girl here in the Valley.

Thanks

Just want to note for the record here that I did everything I could to encourage the use of the word "Hoop", but the radio station was entirely fixated on the use of the word "Hula". When you're hired for a gig, you can't always call all the shots...

Also,
re> commercial ... in case you are wondering why it is such a different look from my regular hoopdancing... I was not allowed to do any moves that were too showy, to turn in any way or to dance at all or even show my teeth while smiling... it was all trying to create what they felt to be a "natural" vibe. So whoop, there it is! My first exploration into being an actress.

I am so happy to be involved~
Hooping is Preventative Medicine

Hoopdance falls into the newest category of professionally recognized fitness, known as "body-mind-spirit" practices. The focus in this new category of fitness is on creating wellness through conscious movement, nutrition, meditation and cardio-respiratory and strength training practices which also stimulate personal growth. Hooping can help you the enjoy pleasure while building power in your muscles. At the same time, it encourages creativity and inspired thought. Many of us have also had spiritual experiences of wellness and connection while hoopdancing. What a gift!
Congratulations LA Teacher Training Graduates!

Congratulations graduates of the LA Level One Teacher Training! It was a weekend of inspiration, deep learning and joy! We had two men attend from Japan, and Maki, a Japanese woman, chose to teach in Japanese. It was amazing to see how a well trained teacher can transcend language through effective body gestures. Especially inspiring, Rikki, a gorgeous woman in her 60's attended, and taught us all how hoop classes can create peace and serenity, as well as sweaty high energy fun. Every single graduate chose to purchase a yearly teaching license to teach the formatted Hoop Girl™ Workout Level One class... this means our network is expanding rapidly... you can find a teacher near you on the HoopGirl.com website under the link "classes".
Sponsorship by Eco Teas Yerba Mate!

We now have sponsorship from Eco-Teas, who produces organic fair trade Yerba Mate. Their delicious green tea comes
from a sustainable 3 generation family farm in Argentina and is dried
without the use of smoke. I often drink Yerba Mate before performances and teaching. It is like jet fuel for hooping! I respond faster, build more endurance and maintain pep. We will have samples available from now at many of our classes and events. Pop a teabag into your water bottle and shake it up cold for some zing!

Click here to learn more about Eco Teas Yerba Mate
Move of the Month: Whisper Horizontal

Whisper is when you pass the hoop underneath a raised leg on a horizontal plane.

WHISPER HORIZONTAL
THE MOVE: An off body move where the hoop is passed on a horizontal plane from one hand to another underneath a raised leg extended out to the side.

Step 1: Start in WILD WEST. Swing the hoop down low to the ground, switching your grip from the inside to the outside of the hoop. Your palm can be facing up or down.

Step 2: Raise a leg as high as you can and swing the hoop underneath. Grasp the hoop in your other hand. Your palm can be facing up or down.

Step 3: Continue to pass the hoop around the body. You can raise just one leg continuously or alternate raising one and then the other.

Make your movement slippery and fluid by deepening your breathe. Balance yourself with a strong core when you lift your leg. Point your toe to extend the length even further. Tighten and engage your whole body, envisioning energy surging up through your balancing leg and projecting out through the extended leg.

IMAGINE: The hoop is a portal and you are launching through with grace and precision.

AVOID: Moving the hoop too far away from the leg being circled. Swing it around closely.

Hooping in the Raw!

Eat more green food! And... don't forget your supplements. Spinach, collards, and kale are good for hoopers! They provide folate, vitamin C, beta-carotene and other carotenoids. These substances can help prevent heart disease, strokes, and cancer. Also, eating lots of green plant based food creates an alkaline environment in the body which optimizes digestion and nutritional assimilation. Be on the lookout for our new superfood supplements, due out by summer!

Yes, Clothing is on the way!

Thank you for all your emails! Yes, the clothing line is on it's way and will be available for sale by June 1st! Our beautiful flowing pants are especially designed to sway with movement and the top gives you support and freedom at the same time. The lines are professional and sexy so that this can be worn for hooping play, teaching, performance or fun. Our featured colors: royal blue, cherry red, and black. These colors are vibrant statements of confidence, beauty and power!

Help me share hooping with millions of women! Have our hoops or classes played a role in weight loss for you? I am working on a big proposal for an organization which requires this type of documentation to qualify hoopdance as "fitness". I only need a few more stories with before and after images to complete my proposal. Please take a few minutes and send your story and images as soon as possible. Thank you!!

Hey folks,

I have always loved to hoop. Back in the Whammo 60's I could manage 3 at a time, but its been decades. I did acquire a huge hoop at a Dead show about 15 years ago (and I loved it). Dancing with a hoop that big is really dreamy.

So last week I found I wanted to hoop again, and I went looking for you folks. Now I'm signing up for the April Beginning Intensive (since I do already know how to hoop, albeit at a slow slow pace)...and I find I'm SO excited. One thing, though...am I going to be the only one there who is looking hard at the approach of menopause? All of your videos show such gorgeous young women.
Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_P8__DRq0

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekDuhjQQEE

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7fVdbGQVU

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlfQeLDsYw

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPPYrAy4gS0

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90mutX0tUg
Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScregYQ55to
The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is
>BEST WAY-HIP HOOPLA (http://www.sfbg.com/2006bob/outdoors.php)
>Everyone had a girl like Christabel Zamor in their sixth-grade class. She had long brown hair, big eyes, and the uncanny ability to draw a crowd with her enchanting hula-hoop skills. Her hooping would stop playground traffic as everyone paused to take note of the strange sensations in their stomachs and, oddly enough, in their naughty areas. Gorgeous, athletic, and seductive, Zamor has changed very little since those days. She can still hoop like no other and she still draws a crowd. Zamor, otherwise known as HoopGirl, has capitalized on the inherent sexiness of hula-hooping by devising an erotic workout plan using the “toy” as her only piece of equipment. You can see her perform at various clubs throughout the city or even get a private lesson. Hoop it up.

and...

>BEST PERSONAL TRAINER (http://www.sfbg.com/2006bob/readers.php#outdoors)
>Our readers love HoopGirl. She has big baby-doll eyes, wears tight-fitting, midriff-bearing skirts, and teaches an erotic exercise program using a modified children's toy (the hula hoop) as her sole piece of equipment. What's not to love?

I am starting a class at Sedusa studios in Los Gatos and South San Francisco which is specifically aimed at helping women explore their sensuality while hula hooping and am talking to everyone I know about their experiences... I am hoping to create a very lush, body-centered experience for these women. I welcome your input!

If anybody knows of any hostels, cheap hotels, or kind people that wouldn't mind hosting a dedicated hooper for a short time (not sure how long---I'm waiting for a response from Christabel) during the month of October, please pass the information my way. I will be so grateful! Thank you!
