Strange Idea

Ok, so I haven't been hooping long, but I have this recurring dream of hooping with pointe shoes on. Like a ballerina! I am not a dancer, and taking Baxter's workshop is the closest I have ever come to a dance class, so obviously, I have no clue what I am talking about...has anyone ever seen someone hoop with pointe shoes on? I keep thinking that if the universe wants me to try this, I will come across a pair at a reasonable price. But, in an effort to not break my neck, it would be nice to see if it can be done in the first place.
Thanx! Mimi

I've seen it done. There's a video on YouTube of two dancers hoop dancing in pointe ... but I can't find it now. I say go for it! Take a ballet class if that helps you be more confident. I'm sure it would help -- not just with hooping in pointe shoes but with plies and spins and turns and arm work. I think you should give it a try!

standing on pointe or even playing around for a bit won't hurt, but i have to caution against getting pointe shoes unless you know for a fact you the ankle and foot strength. i spent my childhood whining at dance teachers about starting pointe (before i decided i wasn't really ballet material) and i was warned that all sort of permanent problems can develope if you aren't ready for that. it's a completely unnatural way of moving(even if its beautiful) and even if you feel like you're strong enough and its not hurting you, it may sneak up on you! i've learned from my boyfriend's year of recovery from an entrapped nerve from spinning poi, that small things/strain can cause really devastating results. things that may take a long time to recover, if you can at all. your feet and ankles are really vital. i'd just hate to see anyone do something that might make mobility difficult or uncomfortable for the rest of their life. is that worth it?

i'm not saying that will definitly happen. but there's a reason dancers don't start pointe until a certain level of training. to avoid injury. i'm not trying to poopoo your idea/inspiration. i'm just very cautious now about injury. i love hooping, and i wouldn't want to take up something like that on a whim that could jeopardize that.

Wow! Thanks ladies! You have given me a lot to think about. I definately don't want to injure myself, but I think I should definately practice moving primarily on the balls of my feet with my hoop...just to see if that feels natural to me.

from this post and others i read from you, i really think you'd enjoy taking some ballet and/or jazz dance classes. i th ink it would help you to fully explore your movement and would move forward differently in your hooping! ^__^

That's true...I would love to take other forms of dance classes. I bought myself some ballet slippers, just to get used to turning better. That has helped. It's actually FINDING the classes in my area that is the hard part. Hmm...

I second Diane, but I am going to flat out say DO NOT DO IT! I have been doing Pointe on and off for several years (more on than off) and the horror stories I have heard of people putting on pointe shoes that aren't ready for pointe or who have NO dance training what so ever is just...ew... I actually knew one girl who decided she was going to put on her friends pointes and shattered her ankles in several places. Aside of that, unless you buy them online, a store will try to fit you for them before you buy them and if it is obvious to them that you do not know what you are doing they will refuse to sell because it is a liability if you seriously injure yourself.

If I get time and some studio space to do pointe and hoop I will do that so you can see how strange and sort of awkward it looks. haha. Sorry to discourage you, but ankle injuries are one of the worst.

i'd be so careful with that! i've been dancing for 6 years and as luring as pointe shoes are there are reasons that girls spend years and years in ballet slippers before they get to lace up their first pair of pointe shoes.

Certainly don't want to injure myself...That is very peculiar (the thought of being "on point". I have had a hard time finding flow lately. Maybe it really is something subconcious.

Honestly, you could really hurt yourself. I'm a trained dancer who use to use point shoes (and hell ya I have thought about combining my hoop and shoes for sure!) but wouldn't dare now that its been a while. It took me years of consistant training to get my feet strong enough. Lovely idea but please be careful.
