Just wondering about costuming ideas for those of use who are a little bit curver? I want something that is sexy but covers a bit more then booty shorts and a bikini top? I would feel self concious in so little.

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Sun, November 19, 2006 - 10:00 PMMelodias! Check out my tribe listings for her tribe, then click on the eBay link she's got in her tribe description.. yummy! These are pants of stretchy fabric that does well with hoops (just avoid the powermesh or slinkys - but those are both old fabric choices not currently available) and they've got great swoooshy flares that balance upper curves nicely!
I like hooping in tube tops, too... once I found a strapless bra that could cope with the girls at full hooping speed :) I find that bare shoulders work really well both for hooping and for showing sexy skin!
What else? Mmhmmm... Hadria's "improvement" video shows her wearing a top that I stil lust over - halter style with a tie back, but has gathered panels under the bust that are open in the middle but do a great job of teasing coverage and movement... Sass has instructions (I THINK on here, or on the main Hula Hooping tribe) for her basic costume top which is a halter with a v-bottom in the front for more coverage..
You could also go for the cute retro look - short sleeve button-down blouse with some cute collar detail, and a knee-length skirt, either pencil or full depending on how you like to play, plus Keds-style sneakers... sassy! <grin>
Good luck!

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 11:00 AMI'm curvy and would love to wear the Melodias, but unfortunately I'm also fairly short and I don't think the Melodias would flatter my figure. Can anyone else give their opinion on this?
thanks!

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 3:48 PMSusan, Melodias would look great on you! First of all, I can't believe you think you are short and overly curvy. You have a great figure! I have seen it for myself. So stop thinking anything negative about yourself right this minute. You're fabulous.
Melodias are miracle pants. I took one pair to a party and let four different women with four different shapes try them on and they looked fabulous on everyone! They were all blown away and now they're all big fans. Get you some Melodias! You'll love them.
Here's where I get mine. Donna is great and fast and sweet and her pants are the best prices around. www.desertdancer.com/ -

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Wed, November 22, 2006 - 10:33 AMOh, I just checked out that site.. and we probably shouldn't be calling those Melodais, 'cause they look like knockoffs! Every vendor I know who carries the real thing is proud to advertise it.. and yeah, the prices are twice as much.. <shrug> Caroleena, do yours have a Melodias tag on them? I'm just curious if they might be seconds from Melodia, or if she's not actually going so far as to misrepresent them..
If you can afford to support the original designer, please do! Indie craftspeople need to have all their hard work recognized :) No judgement if you can't, though, 'cause I know her prices are out of reach for many...

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Wed, November 22, 2006 - 2:26 PMNo no, they don't say Melodia and I shouldn't have called them that. I think she just calls them Fancy Pants. And I'm sure she makes them herself. -

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Wed, November 22, 2006 - 11:28 PMAh, okay :)
I've been seeing some neat designers challenging themselves to make fancy-nifty NON-Melodia-style pants.. there's one called Gypsy Moth (I think) that has been picked up by Cleopatra's Bazaar in Canada.. booty-shorts with attachable leggings with attachable flares!

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Thu, November 23, 2006 - 6:00 AMAre you thinking Geisha Moth? They have some really nice stuff, but I don't own any. (very expensive!)
I believe this is the Melodia website: www.melodiadesigns.com -

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Thu, November 23, 2006 - 9:54 AMOOps, you're right. I just checked out Cleopatra's site again, and they've got some Suhaila scrunchy butt pants that look cool, too.. a bit more casual, less dramatic than Melos or GM, but still nifty..

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Wed, January 17, 2007 - 9:41 AMI did buy the 'fancy pants' and it was a great recommendation. I love them, and I love that one can order pants of the correct length (which is great for shorties like me!)
I just posted a video on YouTube (referenced in the Hooping Videos tribe) wearing my new 'fancy pants.'

Sun, January 28, 2007 - 2:28 PMWow those Melodia pants are AWESOME!! Yeah, a few pairs of those are on my wish list now. Great recommendation, thanks!

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Wed, January 17, 2007 - 12:11 PMHey girl,
There are lots of tricks to emphasize your strengths and disguise your imperfections. As long as you are proud of your beautiful curves and you stick them out every once in a while, then you can wear whatever you want! I think black within the costume helps to void out extra space, but I wouldn't do all black because it'll mute out you. There are special lines you can draw into your costumes to attract the eye of the observer to your proud areas. If you want more feedback let me know. I'll share my knowledge with ya.
Take Care,
Shredder
ps. Check out my photos. I made all my costumes, with exception to the fish nets. -

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 9:19 AMI wanted to bump up this discussion because I've got a question. There's been lots of talk about how to make the lower area look better for 'the larger variety.' But I'm wondering about those of us who don't feel comfortable showing our bellies. I'll run around in booty shorts, no problem. But I don't want to show off my mid-driff.
And I've only seen people wearing the Melodia pants with very small, belly-showing tops. I think the pants are super cute, but would they look silly with a regular, stomach covering tank top? Or are there certain costume top cuts that flatter and look great with either short shorts or the pants?
I'm at a loss...

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 1:01 PMI have a new brand costume top that I'll be wearing tonight for the first time. My friend made it for me using a pattern (and then tweaking it a bit.) I love it because I can wear a bra with it for support. The top is form fitting and comes down to just below my waist. The bottom front part of the top dips to a V shape so even if I'm leaning back my belly is covered. I'll post a picture of it soon.

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 5:56 PMHeck, no! I wear my Melodias with tank tops that completely cover my stomach! I've also worn Melodias with a tank top and then a Melodia tie top over the tank top. Also cute! I don't have a good picture of that with look me at the moment, but I'll post one soon so you can check it out! -

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 4:43 AMThanks Susan and Silver Star. Susan, I can't wait to see that top - it sounds awesome. And Natasha - now that you mention it, I have seen pics of the Melodias with tank tops. I'm going to have to invest in a pair of those pants :) -

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 2:50 PMHaha, glad I could help enable you to buy some of the magical ass pants! Along the same lines, the sassy pants that HoopGirl sells are really comfy, very flattering, and totally cute. I got compliments on them every time I wear them. They cover the butt, don't cut into the stomach, and have a nice flair at the bottom (but the seam isn't open like Melos, which I prefer). I started out just wearing sassy pants to teach, but they are so great that I would wear them every day if I could!

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 10:00 AMI also do tribal belly dance as well as hoop.
I love my sash melo's and wear them all the time with a tank top or fitted Tshirt , works well for hooping or BD and I'm a fluffy gal. Check some of the bd costume sites, you'd be surprised how much you find would work for hooping also to cover the tummy.
I also love rosehips little skirts for butt, lower tummy pudge covering lol

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 9:31 AMWhilst looking for styles of tops to make I came across this and remembered people in this thread asking about tops to wear that cover their stomach. I think style C could work for you. If you sew the sash in place it should stop the top from spinning around with the hoop and riding up and I think it would look great with either tight or flared pants.

Re: Costumes for hoopers of a larger variety
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 6:45 AMI just posted (in my profile) a photo of the cosutme top I mentioned in a previous post. It's great because I can wear a bra with it. My friend Natalie made it for me. She started from a pattern and spruced it up a bit. I don't have a picture of the back of it but it laces up the back - really pretty, but you'll need some help getting it on because of the lace-up back.
