A Question for the Group

A few folks have asked if they could post listings of the stuff they make and sell in our tribe. I said sure. I see it as a way to promote artists and help people who need costume pieces but may not have the time, materials or inclination to craft. They also asked about posting photos of t hestuff they craft in the photo album. Again, I said sure. I figured the designs would inspire people. But a couple of people have written to discourage this policy because they want to see pictures of people "in" costumes, etc. So I want to open this up to a public discussion. Everyone has been very respectful and thoughtful so it's not an argument in the brewing. I'd just like to see what tribemembers would prefer and craft a policy based on that. What say you?

personally i'd prefer to see photos of people *in* costumes. not just modelling them as in 'this outfit is for sale' but to see what people have created as costumes for themselves. cute things they enjoy hooping in at jams, more elaborate get up for festivals and the like...

i agree with your thinking caroleeena that posting photos is a great way to inspire people, but i do feel the tribe slipping away into a selling environment. and selling your awesomely crafted things is great! and personally if i had more money, i'd be buying from a lot of you guys! but the tribe is becoming more of a market place, rather than a place you can learn about how to make things on your own. not that i think selling should be prohibited, but maybe folks should start a thread or something?

selling your wares is important, but with so many new hoopers, many of them not starting from a costume oriented scene, where costuming chat is a regular fixture (ie not burners, ravers, festy folks, etc) new folks might really want to dress up (cuz it's awesome!) but the tribe becoming more of a marketplace is going to lead them to think their way to get some hoop clothes is to buy them. which is totally valid! but certainly not the only option... i guess what i worry about with the selling is that it is over shadowing the diy aspect of costuming...

I've been posting costumes for sale on here and it's been a great outlet for me. I don't see why it would be a problem. People have an opportunity to either buy costumes they may see on here, or to get ideas to make their own. I've had multiple people message me telling me that they love my stuff and it gives them ideas for their own, and that's awesome! I also really appreciate the opportunity to advertise.

i'm not saying don't advertise or sell, because that's an important part of the whole thing... my issue with the photos is that the tribe is looking more like a catalog than a message board. nothing against your creations in the least or you posting them, it's really the websites formatting or something. the photo flags stay for so long after the pic is uploaded...

can you post photos in threads on here? like from photobucket or flickr? each seller could make their own "store" thread?

please don't think i'm going against your business venture ziggy! youre stuff is beautiful and you're a great hooper, i've seen your vids! i don't want to keep you from advertising, i just feel like there has to be some other way to organize it maybe?

It might also make a difference how you view the tribe. I use the "topics" tab up top, instead of the "all" tab so I only see topics and I can go look at the photo albumwhen I choose to. The thread idea is also a good one.

I am about to be offline for a week. I'm going out into the woods for a camping trip so I won't be able to post or moderate. I just wanted to let ya'll know so you won't think I'm being deliberately silent. Everyone have a great week!

I'm still not quite sure why this would be a problem for anyone... I think the more pictures posted, the better it would be for everyone, either to get ideas to create their own or to purchase one posted.

But to make everyone happy, I've created a tribe of my own, especially for buying and selling hoop dance costumes:

    tribes.tribe.net/hoopdance...arketplace

    So come and join!

I think that's a great idea Ziggy! It makes sense to me to have a place for crafters and a place for people who need or want to buy something. (Which makes it so silly that I am moderating this tribe. My costume crafting skills consist of scissors and a glue gun -- and I just learned about glue guns! Too funny.) But this way we can highlight the various people who are crafting kick ass hoop clothes and vending them so that people who are looking specifically to buy have a place to look while also celebrating the people who craft things themselves and want to show them off in this photo album. I think that's a win/win for everyone. We can refer people there from here and I would also post a link on the Hula Hooping tribe and perhaps the one for professional hoop dancers too. I can't remember what it's called right now...

i'm sorry it this seemed to be a bigger deal than i meant it to! as caroleena mentioned you can just click "topics" insteads of "all posts", and that shows you just the discussions, and i realize that, but people who don't spend as much time on the site or theyre mostly in other tribes where the photos aren't as common, they never even had the need to do that, so they just click over to this tribe and get the catalogue effect immediately. maybe i'm worried too much?

since the start of this conversation i got thinking about this... i think the issue at the bottom of this for me is that i wish there would be more active discussions on tribe. i know tribe has become less and less active because it's kind of unreliable, but it's still the most comprehensive place to get info/chat on all things hooping. i've been spending some time on safire's site, hoop city, but it's so young still. tribe has a wealth of experienced members and forums on almost anything hoopwise (and otherwise)

basically what it comes down to for me is not discouraging discussion. tribe was once a greater resource for hoopers, and if it doesn't crash for good or something, it still can be! but in order to preserve the future of tribe (if there is one?) the new hoopers need to converse on here (as well as the not new hoopers!) even tho tribe is buggy and doesn't work sometimes, it's still the most comprehensive place to ask questions about hooping stuff. like i said, i'm just worried about discouraging discussion

i hope you don't feel like you were prematurely pushed in a certain direction before the conversation had any resolution ziggy... but honestly, who knows what awesomeness will come from the tribe you created too?

            One suggestion from me,
How about a market place thread.
That way people can post away with there advertisements and new items but the board would not be dominated by advertisement post. Also people who are looking to buy could easily find all of the options available to them?

              I like Blueberry's suggestion.

I think that's a good suggestion too. I know I'd like to be able to lay my hands on purchasing resources easily. I am not crafty. It's funny that I'm moderating this tribe. Mostly I was hoping to learn from those of you who are crafty and I knew there was a need for such a tribe. I don't have a surger and I don't have much skill with a sewing machine either. My crafts are usually cutting and then tying or using a glue gun (which I've also just learned). But sometimes, I just want to buy something from someone with the skills, the equipment and the access to bad ass materials (like you New Yorkers with your big ass garment district!) who will make something for me, especially if the price is right. I also love that it supports local artists and businesses.

I would like to see more discussion here also. In other tribes that I moderate, I have the ability to create those discussions because I know what I'm talking about. Here, I'm not as effective. So some of the quiet in this tribe is due to the issues with Tribe.net but some are also due to the fact that I'm probably not the best moderator for this tribe. Ideally, I think the moderator should probably be a crafter, someone who could chime in once in a while and say, "Hey! Look what I tried!" I'd love for that person to step forward and express an interest in moderating and revitalizing our group here. If there are any volunteers or if you'd like to nominate someone, please do. And please don't feel that it will hurt me in any way. It won't. I moderate the Circles of Joy tribe (the one for my hoop teachings), the Hooping Videos tribe, the Unconditional Love tribe, the Raleigh Hoops tribe, the Raleigh at Play tribe, the Bubble Camp tribe and the Chinese New Year in Jamaica tribe. My plate is overflowing. It would be doing me a favor for someone with experience and enthusiasm to offer to help. It would also revitalize an important resource for all hoopers. Know anyone who might be interested?
