Need Help for Costume Idea!

I am a relative newbie to the world of hooping, but I am going to the HP Retreat this June, and want to have a kick-butt little costume for the Hooper's Ball...and I have a tailor at my disposal (my mom)!

Here's the thing...I have a few fit problems. I have a bit of a belly, and thick thighs. And I have yet to see a fab-o hooping costume (or outfit for that matter) that reflects my personality and still covers my extra-self without looking like old-ladyness. Hey, I'm 21 and fabulous! I wanna look like the sexy beast that I feel like on the inside.

Any advice? Thanx! :)

i keep hearing hooping costume and hoop clothes said a lot now. and i'd like say that your "hooping costume" doesn't have to based on what you've seen before. it seems like people have this idea that hoop costumes/clothes have to be some kind cutesy uniform, variations on a theme. but that doesn't work for every one! what do you like to hoop in that's a comfortable fabric? do you have a dress that's so cute to hoop in? a favorite pair of pants? a cute top? don't feel like you need to create something brand new. sew sequins and ribbons on something that you already like the cut of. i'm big fan of altering/dressing up old clothes.

I have not come across anything I really feel comfortable hooping in (besides my birthday suit). I have switched to sports bras in my life, because I never know when I will get the opportunity to hoop it up, but as far as clothing, it's been difficult to find shirts long enough, pants high enough (without being jeans) and dresses or skirts that don't ride up. Maybe I have an unusual body shape? Or perhaps my nonprofit job salary doesn't cover the better (and more expensive) clothes for hooping...I do plan on going to some of the beach shops on my next payday in search of some stuff.

Has anyone ever brought their hoop into a store to try on clothes, or do you just wiggle around a bunch?

        Hi Mimi!

One thing I really like is a leotard! Just a plain, cotton stretch dance leotard. It serves several purposes - it helps to smooth unwanted bumps etc from your figure, it also won't ever ride up and if you choose to wear a top over it, it won't matter so much if there is a gap where your pants don't quite meet it, as the leotard will give you a layering effect.

You can pick up a plain one quite cheaply from your local dance store or online.

Leotards and onsies! My dream! The only fear I have with that is all the sweat might irritate yer nethers.
I'm having trouble too with an idea for the ball. I'm thinking maybe 70's basket ball uniform inspired?Ruffle pants are not my thing so much.

The first time I bought pants at Lululemon, I had my hoop in the car so I brought it inside to make sure I could still knee hoop while wearing their pants - don't be shy! It won't hurt the clothes and you should know if the clothes will work for you before you pay for them!

        Hi Mimi,

My hooping costume for last year consisted of a tank top, a pair of fishnets with the feet cut out - for my arms, the chopped off legs of a pair of pants I got at Target for 5 bucks and dyed and painted spiders all over, and a pair of acid green lycra shorts (because the original skirt I intended to make didn't pan out at the last minute - that was about $20. And I wore a wig. Grand total price of outfit including paint and dye - $40.

And I'm 190 pounds - never let that stop you from rocking the booty shorts. And I work at a University, so I'm hearing you on the non-profit thing.

Don't let price or size constrain you - let them inspire you!

        Best,
        Tam

Just wanted to add, that in normal life I don't even wear normal shorts - capris are as far as I will go to show my legs, I never show my arms, and I would never dress the way I do around HP-ers and hoopers in normal life. I would never wear booty shorts, much less neon green ones, and the gaudy outrageousness I exult in when I'm with my fellow hoopers isn't anything near what I dress like in normal life.

Of course, this is why I prefer hanging with hoopers to normal life. The regular rules don't apply :)

          Best,
          Tam

Thank you Tam! I took a HP workshop back in February, and that's the only time I've been around other hoopers. It's easy to forget how forgiving fellow hoopers are compared to the rest of the world, and though I feel comfortable in my own skin, my issue is finding something to cover my nakedness! Perhaps I will have to rock the booty shorts for the first time since elementary school. I noticed I hoop my best in just my undies, while watching Colbert.

Has anyone had much success with bathing suits? I don't know if the material would be too slippery...

If you want to hoop in your undies - have I got the undies for you!

              www.etsy.com/shop.php

They even make blindfolds (although I will be selling blindfolds at the HP retreat as well, so hopefully no one needs to worry about any...)

oOoOoOh! How pretty! I LURVE etsy...they are fabulousity at its finest.
BTW, in inspiration by you, Miss Tam, I hooped for an hour and a half in my driveway today with my belly hangin out...just my sports bra and some low rise stretchy pants...and wouldn'tcha know it?! Today was the day that everyone in the neighborhood decided to walk their dogs! So about a dozen people saw me and my belly and I just focused inward. It was lovely. I am starting to feel more confident already! :)
                Thank you, love.

          {{And I'm 190 pounds - never let that stop you from rocking the booty shorts.}}

This is exactly what I needed to hear!!!!! I am super negative about my upper thighs, but as I have been practicing thigh/leg hooping, I have discovered that nothing offers better grip than bare thighs. Amazing how this change in my thinking has made me consider my thighs an asset! I may not wear shorts every day, but I much more willing to do so when hooping!

Thanks Adrienne! I look forward to meeting you at HP3.
I actually posted a vid to my FB wearing shorts for the first time in years. I am very proud of myself (though I had to go tan after realizing how pasty white my leggies are...) So I am going to pack my new shorts to take to North Carolina! I figure that this has got to be one of the few communities in the world that doesn't care how much cellulite you have.
Speaking of which, I have my costume for the ball on my sewing table, all set to hem up! It's inspired by a peacock-colored fabric, but that's all I'm gonna say...

            Hi Adrienne,

I hear you chica - I just re-discovered my thighs!

I was looking for some yoga pants to make into hooping pants for the retreat - on the cheap - and I found tennis skirts that were perfect - except I haven't worn anything over the knee for at least a decade.

I put them on and they look fine! I dont look like a supermodel or anything, but they're not freakishly bad - it's just legs. And I was like - I've been HIDING my legs for years, like there is something wrong with them, and they're perfectly normal legs!

Honestly, body image issues will screw with you till you can't see straight. I'm just hoping the weather down there is good enough for me to wear the tennis skirts now - it's FREEZING up here in NYC, and it's the last week of May!

    Hi Mimi!

I find that I feel most comfortable hooping and dancing when I have a ridiculous costume on! When I have a wig on or a few crazy accessories, I feel like I can be who ever I want to be and a lot of the self conciousness I would normally have disappears.

I say invest in a fabulous wig - you can find on on eBay for less than $15 for sure!
Try some fluffy leg warmers if you don't own any yet - those just make me feel hoop-tastic and awesome!
And check out Melodia pants, they look fabulous no matter what your size or shape, although they do come with quite a price tag - they are simple enough to make by creating your own pattern.

Here's a link to some cheap, cheap fluffys!
