here is an idea i recently used to make a fire safe hooping top--you might want to try it.
I will upload the pics on my tribe account soon!

basically, i found a small child's leather vest at a yard sale (cowboy style with a sherriff star!:))
it was genuine leather, but really small, tho i could *squeeze* into it. 50 cents, so why not.

take the small vest and cut it apart at all seams. then, use a scissor or exacto to create holes along seam lines to tie in corset lacing. you make the lacing from long strips cut from black cotton T-shirt (cut body of shirt in spirals for super long strips)

by adding in the cotton lacing, you are creating ease and space--therefore making the garment larger. and both the vest (leather) and the laces (cotton) are safe. looks hot; will upload pics soon.

also--figured out a fire safe way to paint on leather if desired: india ink diluted with some water (to save $). ink avail in many colors, non-flammable.

Hey Hoopers!

I've finally decided to put an odd skill of mine to work. I've been making tshirts for my friends as gifts for a while now, and I'd like to share the fun. I can do (pretty much) any design/text on shirts, tanks, hoodies, etc. Any color design available. The garment can pretty much be any base color as well, but I recommend that any base color shirt other than cream, white, or grey have a black design because of how well the colors will show in the design.
The example here is a very poor rough-ish example. I did this at like 4 in the morning because I had an extra black tee lying around my room. Prices range for each design, but for very simple designs I would start shirts at $15. I might charge more for tanks/camis simply because I have to order blank ones online instead of go to my local craft store to get plain shirts. I'll have to get back to you on that. I probably won't ever charge more than $30 because these shirts are hand drawn and not professionally screenprinted. I use fabric markers, PrismaColor markers, and Sharpies. They work very well, but some of the colors fade a bit after watching. Touching up it very easy with your own sharpies. I know these aren't very professional, but it has a personal, D-I-Y touch :)
The *only* issue here is that I am moving to Paris for the next year. I can still make shirts, but shipping will be obnoxious. However, I think I can easily fold a shirt and slide it into a fairly small envelope, but shipping costs would still be annoying. I hate how I manage to time things...
Anyway, if anyone is interested, I would love to do business with you. You can email me at hoopladance@hotmail.com. I would love to help you come up with a design that matches your hooper style and personality.

Thanks and Happy Hooping!
long story short, it is a huge old pelt from a llama or goat of some kind, a woman used it for years before donating it to a reuse/upcycling shop by my house. it is a huge pelt, about the size of a blanket, and both the fur and the skin on back are in good shape--got it for less than $10

all moral dilemmas aside, i am trying to determine how best to sew in into costumes and "care for" it. for example, it is one large piece comprised of many smaller pieces sewn together, and some of the joins need to be re-sewn by me. also, i am not sure if i need to oil, or otherwise clean, the skin backing. i should not wash it, right?
also, can i dye something like this? it is a natural grey color now.

i am planning to sew some leggies, a belt of some kind, and even a furry dance bra.

any advice on sewing it, cleaning it, storing/caring for it, or dyeing it is much appreciated.

I see it as a way to promote artists and help people who need costume pieces but may not have the time, materials or inclination to craft. They also asked about posting photos of t hestuff they craft in the photo album. Again, I said sure. I figured the designs would inspire people. But a couple of people have written to discourage this policy because they want to see pictures of people "in" costumes, etc. So I want to open this up to a public discussion. Everyone has been very respectful and thoughtful so it's not an argument in the brewing. I'd just like to see what tribemembers would prefer and craft a policy based on that. What say you?

Also I really don't know what to do with my hair. Its really long but can be tied up easily, but I want it to look cool too, more than just a pony tail or bun or bandana. Any suggestions?

I wore jeans to my last festival and will more than likely NOT do so this year. Skirts are a much better option for dancing & hooping.

The reason I ask is b/c I've been eyeing a bunch of utility belts and utility aprons on Etsy so as to carry my lil camera, water bottle, lip balm and a playsilk (so as to sit on da grass...I be allergic to da grass:-) ). I'm just wondering if anyone else uses anything. My group tends to split off from each other at shows so I have to depend on myself to carry the essentials and my hoop.

Are there any materials that are easier to hoop over than others? Any specific ones I should avoid? I know I could get "hooping clothing" online, but I can't afford it, it's all too ecxpensive. So I am trying to just use what I have. Thanks for any advice!
SO I'm trying to put together a hooping costume in the theme of STEAM PUNK
I am hooping with EOTO for their NYE event and thats the theme of the party

I think why I'm stressing is I'm working another event the burning man party called Threshold and thats more of a 1930's The New Deal theme, so I've got this lovely flapper esk dress. so I'm going to have to do a costume change to perform ... and I want to have it be not much of a hassle.

I'm headed out in a bit to go check out what I can find today..but its tough...

I've looked online and Have a good idea of what steam punk fashion is but I'm trying to translate that into a hooping outfit...
They are awesome for hooping. I've had SOOOOO many people ask me about them, and someone even suggest that I list them here . . . so I'm doing that.

Some of you may already know about them, they are super popular with Tribal bellydancers. So, you've probably seen them, or something like them. They aren't cheap, but they aren't super expensive. They are made out of a 4 way stretch, so they totally hide cellulite! They come in a few different styles, and they are available online through 2 sources:

Melodia's eBay store:
http://stores.ebay.com/Melodia-Designs

or you can get on the Tribe, occassionally they list pants available, or other people who are selling their pants list them there:
http://melodiapants.tribe.net/

I LOVE mine!! I hope this helps anyone looking for some pants options!

Gabrielle and I are planning to wear them to a performance in Memphis, TN this Saturday, but we are having trouble deciding how we should keep them attached to our heads. The top hats have a little weight to them now that I've attached feathers and garb, and I am afraid to rely on the old bobby pin to keep them in place. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to secure them to our heads so they won't fly off the stage when we're barrel rolling and raging the hoops? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Should my shirt be sleeve less like a halter top or what ever. Should I wear my kickers? Dance shoes or no shoes? I find dance/athletic shoes help but I often practice barefoot and that is what I am most comfortable with I guess. Also I am nervous so any suggestions for preparing for this monumentous event would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all for your time and any advice you may have to share! : ]
P.S. how important is a stage name really? How do I come up with one?
we all dread them don't we?!?!?

I had the worst one ever this past weekend at Yarmony Grass @ Copper Mt, Colorado...
It was my first time officially performing with Kaivalya! Talk about exciting!

My first performance was hooping w. my other half soul sister Rindy and we got to share stage space with Railroad Earth during one of their most FAST PACED songs "Head"
I was wearing two pairs of panty hose (it was frigged cold my friends) I was wearing black leggings and white fish net over top...looked great, functioned well but...my dreaded mistake was cutting the elastic to make the black leggings fit better...

Once on stage they were dropping down past my hip bones! I'm trying to rock the hoop and my hose are falling down! Talk bout distracting! and I was trying not to SHOW panic in my face, I wanted to take in the moment for what it was worth!! I had been loving this band since 2003 what an honor to be up here!!!

It totally got to me, in pictures you can see it! My friends said they couldn't tell but its hard to trust 'em. I'm glad they are being nice...Stephiniti my fellow performer said she noticed every time I turned my back to the crowd I adjusted...uggh I'm trying to drop it but...it really held me back in one of my biggest moments as a hoop dancer...

and to top it off, my partner, Rindy, soul sister....she was looking SOOO FINE! She out sexed me!
Don't believe me?

Here is the only video I've found so far...its mostly of her! She looks absolutely FABULOUS! I love this woman!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYVD23x43iI

My mom gave me a great tip for keeping my furry boots/legwarmers clean - spray them with Scotchguard (available at craft stores, fabric stores, etc.). She wore a hula costume with a long white skirt through the dust of the fair and emerged with the bottom of her costume just as white and clean as when she left the house. She said she sprayed the material and then let it dry outside in the backyard. My mom has OCD so she sprayed it a few more times for good measure. Voila! She said after you wash the article, you should spray it again, but if it's something like the furry boots that you don't wash, don't worry about it - just shake the dust off and keep going!

I haven't tried it yet (and mine are already so dirty at the bottom that I doubt I'd notice a difference), but I thought I'd pass this along in case anyone going to Burning Man wants to give it a try.

I love mohawks and I wanted one, but I certaintly wasn't willing to chop off my long wavy locks for it. And, I knew my hair was too long to have the straight-up vertical hawk goin on. So I've been trying to create somewhat of a hybrid when I saw the lastes episode of Project Runway (avant gaurde challenge) One of the models had realy long hair pulled into a mohawk. http://www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway/season/4/photos/index.php that's the link to the photo gallery. I know there are a lot of other pictures to scroll through, but the model has a black jacket on a long blond hair. Instead of having my hair straight like hers, though, I'm going to keep it really textured, thick, and wavy like usual. Then, once I finally get it to work, I'm to spray the top of it turquoise. All of this is for a rave that I'm going to hoop at this weekend.

I am going to the renaissance faire in a couple of weeks (though I'll be out of town the week before I go so I'm already at 1 week to create crunch time) and I've got a problem. Previously all of my ren garb consists of corsets and bodices and other non hoop friendly ornaments. I want to do something that is hoop friendly because I am ALWAYS missing my hoop at faire, especially when my boyfriend busts out his poi and really groves to the drums or any other lovely ren tunes floating on the faire-air. I was thinking something really easy...like wrap pants, dread falls and a top...Only problem is I'm stuck on what to do for my top.

I am really insecure about my belly and my chest is huge and no bra or a strapless just doesn't work so I've got some obsticals to work around. (yikes, was that a pun?)

I totally dig earth tones and they look amazing on me...so I was thinking I'd take it in the "forest sprite" direction. I don't mean I want to get all glittery-fairyesque...but I want to accent it with things like twigs as chopsticks to hold up my hair, greens and browns and rust-auburns in my makeup and accesories to portray a subtle kind of mysticism but still be functional because of the simplicity. I also like that idea because I am part of an organization who's leadership rolls are centered around the four elements. In the organization I represent Earth. It would be nice to have a very earthy costume to really flesh out for the comming years of fair that we do with the group.

Anyway...PLEASE help me brainstorm! Thanks.
