whirly wednesday is the weekly jam we've been having here in rochester. sarah priestap is a student at RIT and she made this vid for a photojournalism class. we started meeting in the beginning of april. i think this was may? since then whirly wednesday has really taken off! it's been really awesome, and we recently joined forces with a local drum circle. the drum circle really kicks the little cd players butt!
i'm at work, and sarah just emailed me the youtube link. the computers at work don't have sound cards, prolly to limit youtubing and the like on company time. so i've watched it several times, but with no sound! looks great to me, everyone looks like they're having fun! when i get home i can fully absorb it, sound and all! i think sarah really captured the essence of whirly wednesday, which is happy hooping

if you're coming to or through rochester ny, let me know!

Re: Whirly Wednesday!!!
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 12:13 PMi made ads that i hung here and there around town with little tear offs that had the email address on them and smaller flyers to give to interested/curious people. the flyers also had hooping.org on them. i posted the ad on craigslist and rocwiki too! any place with a bulletin board!
rochester.craigslist.org/act/1...6.html
here's a link to the craigslist ad. feel free to use that for advertising inspiration! i tried the same thing in buffalo (where i'm originally from) but it's been better recieved here in rochester. the ad/flyer text was something i wrote last summer and tweaked it for roc.

Re: Whirly Wednesday!!!
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 1:50 PMThis is cool. Congrats. Every town should do this. In Austin myself, Randal and Shayen organized a Circus Arts gathering called C.U.@Circus. (Clowns Unite @ Circus) We encourage all fun toys and disciplines. I bring stilts, rolla bollas, poi, hoops and we have jugglers, we do acro partner balancing, the works. We hold it in a park every Sunday and the attendance has easily doubled or tripled since we started, just due to passers by enthusiasm.
It has been a great way to introduce the public to grownup fun but of course the kids love it, too. I encourage everyone to try this. We used word of mouth as well as a facebook page.
Here are a couple of videos from our gatherings.

Re: Whirly Wednesday!!!
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 3:30 PMawesome lucian! i'll defeintly let you know if i ever make it to austin. i've heard great things about austin!
whirly wednesday is technically an open jam. but i've only advertised around town for hooping. on tribe as an open jam, but because of my hoop community mission i set out on it's still primarily hoopers. for now at least. we've had a smattering of other skill toys, and a few of the hoopers also spin poi. my boyfriend is a really excellent poi spinner. but his wrist/elbow surgeries (on both arms!) has taken a little longer to heal than originally hoped. i imagine once he's healed and rocking out, more people will want to learn! for now he's had a few occasions to minorly geek out/instruct the few poi spinners we've had. since his arm movement has been restricted from the injury, he got pretty damn good at on the body hooping to stay busy!
i've been thinking about bringing a diabolo and flower sticks for people to use. justin has a bunch of tools he wouldn't mind sharing, but i don't want to force him to teach thru his recovery. and if i bring certain toys i know he won't be able to resist and might be sorry/in pain the next day.
