Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 8:33 AMInteresting film technique. That shoulder to shoulder pass across the chest is bad ass. I don't think I've ever seen that before. (And that's saying something!) I also love your hoop space. How awesome. Great hooping, great film making, very entertaining. Thanks for posting this. -

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 8:43 AMThat move is amazing and I have never seen it before either, I have tried something similar with taking my head out back but I allways want to put my head back in before it goes on the other shoulder. I love the inner dialouge too, cause all those things go through my head.

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 8:41 AMI really enjoyed this. You are a beautiful dancer. I loved watching you move. It was interesting to have your inner dialogue emerge while watching your hands from inside the hoop. You speak for many of us I think. -

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 9:31 AMthank you for posting this incredibly creative video!! I relate so much to the inner dialog. that chatting fills my mind most of the time, not just when I am hooping. Hooping is one of my practices that quiets it. Although, I must confess that mine is a lot more negative. "I look horrible doing this. What is the point of doing this? No one would ever want to watch me doing this anyway. I am ugly. I am too fat. I am not graceful." and the negative thoughts just keep coming and coming. But I persist. I breathe. I turn. I focus on the tricks that I am doing. And when they are really bad, I just focus on hooping around my waist and dancing. And some times the thoughts stop even for a few seconds.
Your hoop dance is incredible. That shoulder trick is totally bad ass, as are your verticle isolation moves. I can't wait to see more videos from you. (And I am super excited that I get to regularly hoop with you!!) -

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 9:41 AMYou are absolutely fabulous! Holy shit! I *love* this video--your dance is amazingly fluid and effortless, and your creativity with moving the hoop around the shoulders and arms is (as everyone has said) truly awe-inspiring. ......WOW..... -

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 10:38 AMExcellent. Just excellent....and unique and so true....how many times has that voice in my head gone through the drill of "what am I doing? I have so much to do and here I am with the hoop". The fluid reality is captured through your movement and how you dreamed to put this together....did I say...excellent?!!!!

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Mon, November 19, 2007 - 3:09 PMI love the video! Obviously, we are all relating to that inner chatter that questions, criticizes, distracts, worries, encourages, argues, motivates, etc. It's so hard to quiet that overactive mind! When mine is at its loudest, or most engrandizing, that's when the hoop pops me in the face! It was a wonderfully creative and revealing expression of the "process" of hooping.
You dance beautiful and that move IS totally kick-ass. Thanks for the inspiration. Hope to see you again! -

Wed, November 21, 2007 - 9:43 AMWhat a great video, Brecken! Thank you so much for taking the time to create and post this. You are a really flowy, hooper.
i don't have any suggestions, except to "keep on keepin' on."
Much love to you and your quieting of meaningless chatter. -

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Wed, November 21, 2007 - 10:11 AMI've watched and re-watched your video after I found myself thinking of it while in the midst of a practice session....and I just want to ask, how did you shoot the footage of you in the hoop? What body part did you strap the camera to in order to get that "through your own eyes angle"?
The fresh creativity of your clip impresses. -

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Wed, November 21, 2007 - 11:55 AMWow. This is my favorite hooping video week in a long time! First of all, the shoulder pass over the chest is badass. I don't think I've seen that before, either.
But secondly, as someone who lives alone and talks to herself non-stop (aloud and in my head), I totally related to the word flow that went with your hoop flow. I have to give you props for being able to represent a wandering mind on film. It was very well done. The way the voices are layered over each other and the fact that you used quick bursts of unrelated thoughts really mimics inner dialog.
You actually inspired me to try to figure out how to upload my first, first hoop video ever -- before I even knew there was a "hooping underground," when I still used toy hoops. It's a black and white art film made by my friend Franziska Ruprecht. She layered a bunch of recorded interviews over one another, and the voices are all talking about "dreams" ... in different languages. English, Chinese, Turkish, and I forgot what else. The movie itself is like a crazy dream, and in part of it, I'm hooping in front of an abandoned building in downtown Detroit. And I'm still like 25 lbs. heavier! :) It's TOTAL art school stuff, maybe even comically so. But the thought flow in your video reminded me of the way that dream talk goes in mine.
Anyway, really interesting! I'm so happy to see a huge variety of videos this week, with lots of new moves and new taping concepts. I hooped for several hours yesterday (at the park and at home) and suddenly broke through some barriers late last night. I think sometimes I just need the inspiration that comes from watching others ... so thanks everyone.

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Thu, November 22, 2007 - 9:21 AMOh my god, i can't wait to see that. Someone had said to me that i should consider changing it to black and white, because it looks to be in the very early stages of film-making (just because it's pretty simple and the camera's stationary). But THAT sounds like a real piece of work. i'm so glad you're posting it. And thanks, i'm happy you liked mine and related to it. living alone really does that. It's kind of funny actually, but sort of scary too. Oh, life. heh.

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Thu, November 22, 2007 - 5:54 AMthis is so exciting. i'm so glad you like it. ...i actually just held the camera with my left hand and hooped with my right. It was a little scary considering i'd rented the camera and would owe about 3 grand if it broke. But actually (and i'll send a picture if you want) i reccently made a head device -with goggles and hot glue and some canvas- that would hold my small digital camera to my forehead. I'm gonna try to use it for something else, but i haven't decided yet. thanks again. keep in touch -

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Wed, July 2, 2008 - 6:17 AMI'm glad this was bumped, I remember seeing this video featured on hooping.org as vid of the day, and thinking "woah!" I had to show it to my journalism/artsy friends that don't even hoop and they LOVED it b/c of the relatability (made up word? anyhow, i intend it to denote ability to relate to something)of the inner dialogue and the entire thought process when you know you're spending time in revelry and you've got a bajillion other things floating in and out of your mind. I especially enjoy the part when you're like "when i get this it's gonna be... i'm gonna get this... when i get this.." I feel the exact same way at times. Also, I'm going to just jump on the band wagon w/ everyone else and tell you that the shoulder passes are amazing. I love it when someone posts new/unique tricks! lovely in so many ways. -

Re: hooping with an inner dialogue
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 6:43 AMI am really glad this was bumped, too. I saw this when it was first posted, but like most videos I watch I saw it at work without sound. And even then seeing it blew me away - I loved the change in perspective, watching your hands and fingers. I was really taken with that part of it, how loose and relaxed they were, so confident and familiar with the hoop. Your whole body looks that way to me, especially after seeing you over the weekend in NC. You are absolutly explosive - it's such a fluid power unlike any other hooper I have ever seen.
But, yes - it was so awesome to revisit this video and this time hear the words... You are one deep well of artistic talent, girl. Just amazing. I liked how it gave insight into your thought patterns... -
