What does your practice space look like?

I was laughing when I watched Caroleena's video and heard her lamenting about her tight hooping space. We ALL know how that goes! I am so fortunate here in Oregon to have a fairly large practice space in my apartment. That was not the case for the first 4 1/2 years of my hoop journey, when I lived with two roommates and a dog, in a house with lots of furniture and a piano and clutter. The dog just knew to RUN as soon as I touched my hoop. I broke the overhead light fixture and lots of other stuff in that house. That said ... I still miss it! I had to get so creative in order to hoop there, especially in the Michigan winter -- which lasts about 6 months. :)

I'm curious how other people have arranged their personal space in order to make room for hooping. Here's what my spot looks like. If anyone else wants to post, I think it would be fun to see where your magic happens. And I'm not necessarily talking about a dance studio or a park or a backyard. That's too easy. I'm talking about the spot you use when it's 2 a.m., and you just have to give it a whirl.

Oh what a great idea for a post! I just took my first hooping video ever in my basement. However, now I don't know what to do with it to share. I'll check on utube and get it up here. It's in my practice space which is just the basement / laundry room. I'm still figuring out how to make more space so others can hoop with me down there. I think if I work it right I could fit 2 or 3 people all together.

      Ok, so here it is...
      Not too exciting....

Oh, and this was filmed (and I use this term loosly) last night after going out. Filming is another thing I need to work on.

I'm looking forward to seeing other peoples practice spaces!!!

Oh how great to see both of your hoop spaces!

Revolva~ I'm totally jealous! Your spot is spacious and looks to be SWEET for turns. I love that we hoopers are going to decrease the demand for furniture.

pOppy~ I had not connected with who you are yet! As soon as you started filming, I was so stoked to see a triangle friend here. I wasn't totally 100% sure it was you (hat and all), then you said Raleigh! and then I saw the hoop you got at Shakori! Glad to see you here on tribe! Great hoop space - definitely could accommodate another. Can I come over and play some time - maybe after a visit with your 'kids?'

I will film mine in the next day or two. Today I'm crafting, so there's no space in my home for hooping. I'm gonna have to hoop at the house I'm sitting for the weekend.

This is such an interesting way to connect with one another - near and far - to see what their homes and spaces are like and how that influences one's hoop style I was just thinking about how - now that I am coming in for the winter - my practice will change. No more double poi style ;-( Or much vertical at all. Yesterday, I practiced chi-ing variations for 40 minutes. It's a good change to strengthen skills I may not practice as much in the spacious backyard.

I gave away my coffee table, a love seat and a chair so that I can hoop in my living room. Everything else is pushed to the sides. I love it this way. I wish it was bigger but, in some ways, it makes me improve to have to avoid that crazy column and the ceiling fan and the door. Of course, pulling that light off the ceiling fan and onto my head made for one less light to worry about but I have this big goose egg on my head now. It hurts to brush my hair!

Oh, thanks Poppy! That was so nice. It feels almost like we've hooped together, now that I've been invited into your basement, via youtube. :) The first time I ever hooped as an adult, I was in the basement. Then, I moved my practice upstairs because the ceiling was slightly higher, although there was more furniture on all sides. Guess it's just about making concessions.

That glimpse of your lightbulb and Caroleeena's ceiling fan story (OUCH!) actually reminded me to say something. I forgot to point out in my video is that there is no light fixture on my living room ceiling. I found this place on Craigslist when I was in Detroit and had never even SEEN it in person before I got here. I was disappointed the first night, when I realized the living room required a lamp, which I didn't have. I had to sit in the dark. In a new city where I didn't know anyone. Sniffle. :( And then it hit me: NO CEILING LIGHT FIXTURE!!! Whoo-hooo! I got a floor lamp at Target, and there have been no broken light bulbs for over a year. The light fixture just makes indoor hooping -- for those of us in rainy/snowy areas -- even more frustrating!

I hope to see more hoop spaces. Maybe this is even a way for people who are kind of shy about posting their hooping videos to make a video that doesn't require hooping. :)

I thought it would be nice to add to this collection. But if I'd known before I started what trouble I'd have... So many takes. I just look and sound like a dork! Sorry. For years if anyone pointed a camera at me I instantly turned into a wooden statue. I'm getting a bit better with the normal camera, but I have all the same problems again with the video.

Anyway, this is my tiny indoor space. It's not as bad as this looks because I do have access to the village hall, but only when no one else is in, and it's very cold up there now.

I hope you like spending a bit of Sunday afternoon with me at home.

Revolva you are so blessed to have such a great big hoop space, even if they did paint the floor around your rug (which is funny!) It's so big and open.

Poppy, I can relate to basement hooping. I hoop in my mom's basement and it has its own challenges for sure. Still, you seem to make good use of the space.

Sue, your space is charming. I feel like I've just visited with you. I know it's small but what a great way to hone your core hooping skills. And if you have another place to practice off-the-body stuff, then it's pretty much ideal. If you do build your outdoor hoopspace, I hope you'll post a video of it.

I also hope Beth will post a video of her new hoopspace, the one that Bonnie hooped in in that video with her family. I saw it when they were building it and it's so spacious and beautiful. I'd love to have a little tour. (I'd also love to have goats cruising by.)

I've already shown my hoopspace but I might do a little tour like the folks in this thread have done ... but that would require some house cleaning! I love seeing all of your spaces though. It's like being invited into your homes. And I guess it is really.

Sue, your sitting room is so cozy. Which is nice for relaxing but, like you said, a challenge for hooping. :) I took a peek at all your videos. I love them. I just learned to knee hoop but I can only do it for short stints and I can not move it back up once it is down there. I think watching your videos will help. I was also so excited to see chickens. I really want to have some chickens one day. I live in a city in North Carolina and it is not encouraged here. However, I don't think it is illegal.

Anyway, I am finding this thread so much fun. It's like little windows into the lives of fellow hoopers. Everyone, thanks for sharing your spaces and I hope to see more!

Chickens are very sweet. They are cleverer than you expect too. I have some cabbage leaves to take down to mine in a minute. They don't like this time of year though because they get to be outside their safe compound much less than in the summer. We have a big fox population round here, so I only let them out when I'm in the garden or working in the barn and they tend to stick close to me. Last week it rained really hard when they were out and I was in the barn, I had to close the door too, but just before I did my little brown hen scuttled in looking smug. The two black chickens hadn't thought of that and hid under a shrub getting soaked. Pearl and I were warm and dry!

I have to watch them if I'm hooping and they are about though. They wander under the hoop up to my feet!!!

It's a lovely thread, to see into each others lives a little bit. Great idea.

Oh wow! We can't compete. It rains quite a bit here too, but we don't have lush jungle in the garden like you do.

Fabulous house, veranda and garden. What a place to live and fantastic hoop areas.

      Thanks for sharing.

Yay, more videos! This is interesting. We're all doing this in such different locations, in the midst of our own unique lives.

Sue, I totally applaud you for making use of your cozy sitting space, despite sofas and kitties. It really helps hone your creativity having to hoop with constraints. And fireside hooping must be so nice on a rainy day.

Ancylen, I think we're all suddenly scratching our chins and thinking, "Hmm, how can I move to Hawaii?" That's an amazing amount of space -- all of it beautiful. And could your baby be any more cute? I love how he runs around giggling while you hoop.

Revolva I had to laugh at myself watching your video. When I saw the floor I first thought that you had worn the paint off with your spinning!!!! If it makes you feel any better about the laziness of the painters, I once worked at the St. Francis Hotel in SF and years ago when we went to replace the huge area rug in the lobby, we discovered that the beautiful marble floor ended at the rug, underneath was ugly grey cement. So, it happens in the fanciest of places too!
Nice you have a window for light and view. Thanks for coming up with this. Maybe next weekend I can post a vid of my space too.

This is one of my favorite threads so far. I LOVE seeing where everyone works their magic and faces their demons, and I LOVE hearing your voices. It's feels like a real, first meeting and gives another dimension to my awareness of each of you as actual people.

Revolva, I really did think that perhaps you had hooped so much that the paint had worn off the floor. Hilarious.

Poppy, you are adorable. I love listening to you talk and experiencing your personality. I'd love to hoop with you sometime.

Sue, since exchanging emails some time back about architecture and building, I have often wondered what your home was like. I found myself looking at the plaster walls and beamed ceilings and wondering if you built the shelves yourself. I love the fireplace and the authentic feeling of your home. I can imagine having a cup of tea there with a cat in my lap and a fire going and chatting with you about renovations and design.

And the last video from Hawaii, my goodness, what an Eden! I loved the wildly painted trim in the living area and the open, tropical feeling of the house and compound. A gorgeous, towheaded babe squealing and running around the lush vegetation completes the picture.

Thank you all for sharing yourselves. My video camera is down, but I will try and get a video up sometime soon.

And Sue, I LOVE chickens as well. We have six and I feel so appreciative of the fact that we feed them kitchen scraps and they give us beautiful eggs. I could watch them all day.

Mahalo to everyone for responding to my post. I had been having some pretty severe depression periods and have just been lifting out of it within the last month. Hooping has helped me SO MUCH! It's hard to believe that I would be depressed, huh? Well, now I have so much more appreciation of all the beauty here with my family and my home. I was feeling all that when my husband made the video.

So, thanks again. If anyone feels like exploring the Big Island, I'll exchange at stay in our guest room for some hooping lessons!
        • Re: What does your practice space look like?

Ancelyn, I just want to say that you are not alone in your struggle with depression. I think this is an issue that deserves it's own thread, but I'll go ahead and say that for me, hooping has provided some mighty powerful medicine. I know that many, many of the folks I've had the pleasure to hoop with have said the same thing. The meditative aspect of hooping along with the endorphin release from dance combine to be as much, if not more than, any pharmaceutical available. And no side effects other than the occasional bruise.

I don't know if the responsibility (and hormones) that go along with being a mother are part of your experience with depression. It seems to be a common theme and I know that for me, taking care of myself (by hooping, being with people who love me and accept me, eating and sleeping well, etc....) is one of the best ways to insure that I can be the best mother possible for my daughter. It's especially hard to deal with dark feelings when surrounded by a beautiful environment. "What's wrong with me? How can I not be happy when the sun is shining and the sky is blue?" It's almost harder and more disillusioning to be unhappy on a gorgeous island.

I wish you the best in finding the joy that you deserve and that is inherently a part of your being. Hooping nourishes the soul in a way that gives us the ability to fully feel our happiness and our optimism for life. Best to you.

oh good (?) me too with the depression bug... i tried to hoop the other day and really couldn't jive with it. that just proves it! lol... my space could be wonderful, but i need to snap out of the funk. we moved recently, 3 months ago, i guess the adjustment time take a while. okay, i'm getting a big hit to just go hoop around, don't try and make anything of it, just put on some feel good mellow tunes and be with it...

my feeling is that i'm not getting my heart rate up enough to release any endorphins that might release some of the depression/tension (lack of jobs here is really getting to me) ... thanks for being real people... good advise, taken...

Ancelyn, Beth & Anistara - I loved reading your comments here and can completely relate. There are some amazing people on Tribe (I recently joined) & I feel connected to each of you through your words and videos. It's refreshing to know that we so much in common, even though we live far away from one another and lead such different lives. Depression has affected me and my family in many ways - some of them too dark to talk about. But I know for a fact that sunlight, exercise, a healthy lifestyle and good vibes do make a difference in a person's mood. Hooping has provided a new outlet for me as well. There is definitley something to be said about the natural high associated with hoop dance. The past few months have been great for me, and I'm certain that 'finding myself in the hoop' has a lot to do with this.

Thank you for sharing your videos and thoughts. I hope to contribute by posting some of my own videos soon... I just need to get a camcorder :)

P.S. Beth, you have a gift with words.

              Thu, November 29, 2007 - 1:27 PM
I have dealt with seasonal depression for many years. At first, I didn't realize that's what it was - I just kept thinking that November sucked or I had a bad month, but after a few years I realized what was really going on. One thing that has helped a little is getting an alarm clock with a lamp that simulates sunrise. Because it's so dark and/or cloudy after the time change, your body doesn't have a real sunrise to help wake up in the winter, so that's where the sunrise lamp comes in. There are lots of different models out there. I think mine has helped. The sunrise lamp is also supposed to help you wake up more naturally, but since I am not a morning person, not much would get my ass up at 6am besides a forklift.

Last fall was my first experience hooping after the time change and I believe that it helped a lot. The first reason is the most obvious - hooping makes me happy and anything that improves your mood during seasonal depression helps. It has also given me something positive to focus on. When I feel crappy or sad, just telling myself that I will hoop later makes me feel a little better. The actual hooping itself also makes me feel much better. In addition, finding such a supportive hooping community has helped. Even when I'm too sad/depressed/apathetic to post anything, I still come to tribe to read what's going on with everyone else in the hooping tribes, which helps me feel connected.

Anyways- I really appreciated seeing your altar, toys, patron saints. Ganesha is definitely a deity that I pay great respect to as well. A remover of obstacles is a facilitator of flow...I love your contact juggling ball stand/tree. Beautiful.....

    Hi there,
My name is Saige, and I have been hooping for about 5 months. I am living in the student housing at my University and luckily it has a living room. The hoop space is quite small. Especially with our current Christmas tree, but I pushed it aside to give you a peak at where I spend my time hooping. If the weather is good though, I go outside and bring my speakers : )

I wanted to push the screen up to see your face, but we got the odd peek when you dropped down. Not a bad space for a sitting room. Big enough to jump in is good. And for a student room it looks remarkably clean and tidy too!

I have been a busy little bee today and tonight so sorry if I am posting left right and centre and upside down - catching up cause I've been denying my tribe internet habit.

This is a really fascinating thread, and I found the video hard to make. I felt like a stunned bunny in the headlights of an oncoming car - frozen. Whilst I can talk until the cows come home, and even write a lot, talking to a camera (albeit talking to the great members of this fantastic tribe) I found really weird. Still here is my hoop space uk.youtube.com/watch

It is amazing how varied our spaces are, whilst at times I have felt confined, I actually feel grateful for the space that I have (I would love a high ceiling mind :-) Also seeing you all speak made me want to hug you all. I do feel even closer to you all now, strange isn't it!!!

              Brilliant!

That just made me laugh out loud. All those scars and you painted just a few weeks ago? Your Phil must be a very understanding man is all I can say, and very smart looking, if unwilling to be interviewed.

Everything in your sitting room is fitted around hoops. By far the biggest storage cupboard in the room is full of hoop making materials. I love that you taped the light fitting to the ceiling. If you do move house soon, I hope you get a nice big room somewhere in it so that you can express yourself even more, or failing that a large square garden shed just for you. Some of the square ones would be easily big enough to hoop in for 1 person.

34" hoops! I could probably wear one of those. But it does mean you could do a full dance in my tiny space. I'm currently training with a 40" hoop for indoors.

You are right, it's hard to talk to the camera. I don't talk the way I did on my video usually. I think I'm going to do another one. But it's lovely to see people and their homes. It is rather like being invited round for tea isn't it?

I feel like I know each one of you better now that I've heard your voices and seen your nests. Sharna, I, too, laughed out loud watching your house tour. "Hoop scars" and a long-suffering hubby (who's quite cute, if you don't mind me saying so). I love the rambling, filled-to-the-brim quality of your home. I imagine you living a wonderfully chaotic and creative life filled with hoops and children and all of the crazy, mundane, and insane things that make up the life of a mother, wife and obsessed HoopDancer. I enjoyed your eccentric, outside-of-the-box solutions to such things as dangling lightbulbs. You, Sharna Rose, are an outside-of-the-box kind of gal and I find that inspiring. I'm so impressed with the wit and comfort of each of you who posted and were able to talk to the camera.

What a lovely looking place you have. I like the open-plan of it all. But I can't agree that it's small! Sharna and I might have to fight you for it.

I would recommend precautions before hooping. Your vase, guitar and Buddha need moving to safer ground behind the kitchen bar wall. The ceiling fan will probably loose one, two or maybe even three blades before long. You, like Sharna, will be taping what's left up to the ceiling before long.

You are very tidy and have a lovely artistic home. The nice thing about this thread is how diverse our homes are. As diverse as the people who live in them, yet all linked by the hoop. Wonderful.

Awesome! I only have a quick second online, but I wanted to say thanks for posting. It's a lovely space, even if it's smaller than what you're used to. And you also said "I have to be aware of everything." That's actually a challenge which can strengthen your hoop skills! Then, when you go pro, and someone puts you on the smallest possible stage, with lights hanging right overhead, you can just channel the feeling of being in your living room. :) Thanks, Lucian!

Ha. Well, thanks peeps. Sue, I have already knocked over the lava lamp, incense burner and tested the window glass for shatter resistance. I have even thought about removing the lights and blades from the ceiling fan. But we'll wait and see. I am starting to get used to it and you all are an inspiration for tight hooping.

Well I've had to downsize my hoopspace. Ok, we moved and I did not have much of a choice. I'm actually happy to have a space :D
Needless to say, it's... uh... cozy!

Lucian, I tried to view your video but it says it's private.

Oh, the video: A little babbly but at least it's short!

My first hoop space video. Long and babbly, sorry.

It does look cosy. A nice warm light space. I think as we get to be better hoopers we can cope with much less room. Do you have enough height to do any off-body moves in there?

I love you little sewing corner too. I notice that a lot of women who hoop on the other side of the Atlantic also sew. I've seen many hooping videos with sewing machines in evidence. That's really strange here. I bet almost none of us sew. I have a machine, but I've not made anything other than curtains on it for years and I'm pretty special to have made those.

          It's a shame.
