While we were at Emerald Isle for Ali Cat's wedding, her new sister-in-love, a beautiful woman named Lisa who did synchronized swimming in college, told me that she thought it would be neat to do a synchronized swimming routine with a hoop. I asked her what moves she thought she could do and she proceeded to show me! There is a lot of cool stuff in here. I think Esther Williams would love these moves and it inflames my imagination about other moves as well. I have so many ideas now!!! Check it out:

Plus, who knew a hoop would float!?! I guess it does have air in it. It's covered in gaffer's tape too but it didn't get much heavier and the gaffer's didn't come off either, which I kinda worried about. So cool. On every level.

Re: Synchronized Swimming with Hoop
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 12:49 AMI can only imagine a huge team of swimmers....doing this in sync.....it would also be cool if during the time above water the hoop were in motion, spinning ariel...and then slowed into the forced motion of going underwater....it could be stupendous!!! -

Tue, June 9, 2009 - 9:13 PMI agree and I can totally see that too. I wish we'd had time (and a bigger pool) to do more with these concepts. I hope other people will and will share them here.

Tue, June 9, 2009 - 10:35 PMRad,
Awhile ago while on holidays at the beach we found out a cool trick that this reminded me of.
If you float sitting in a rubber ring you can spin a hoop on your foot at the same time and if you get the hoop spinning fairly quickly the ring and you will start to turn around in the water to. Kind of like a hoop powered boat.

Re: Synchronized Swimming with Hoop
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 2:15 AMI love bringing my hoops into the water! I find that you can move with them in totally different ways in the water, you can spin, they float but also offer resistance as you pull them under the water, you can dive and spiral through them, stretch out and float on top of them, do underwater yoga with them, pop them out of the water and spin them around on your hands and feet, it's really fun!
I have found that I like hoops that are fatter tubing but smaller diameter for the water for resistance and floatation. I discovered this, because I go to a therapeutic warm salt water pool near my house with my son, and to do aquatic bodywork with clients. They actually had some hula hoops there for playing with when they teach swim classes, to swim through, and I started taking them into the pool with me to play with and dance with. SO MUCH FUN!
I highly recommend playing with this. Water is the new fire.
