Please post a link to your favorite hooping video. Yes, I'm asking you to narrow it to one. My favorite has changed over time but currently it's Hula Hoop Valkirie. Valkirie is a hooper with Cirque Bouffon in Köln, Germany and I think she combines great dancing with precision hooping. I find this performance very inspiring.

If you had to pick ONE video that inspires, educates or enlightens you, which video would you choose?

Wow...she is absolutely amazing. Just...really...*amazing*! I don't know how to post links that actually work...but the name of the video on youtube is Jess~blue dress birthday spin youtube.com/watch is the address in the url. I have to copy and paste it so forgive my lack of technical knowledge.
I like it because it seems attainable with enough practice. I like how she seems to float around with her hoop. I like the song and I adore her dress. I hope this isn't illegal or anything. I don't know Jess and I didn't ask if I could post her video, but she's really really good. I can't wait until I'm good enough to just hoop without having to {concentrate}.

I also LOVE the Spiral at Earthdance video but the one that makes me feel good every time I watch it -- That Old Pair of Jeans, Fatboy Slim with Angie Humphries hooping. www.youtube.com/watch She just seems so joyful and I would entirely enjoy myself hooping through the tall grasses...

Video-wise, I'd have to say the Angie Humphries/Fatboy Slim video is also my favorite -- as much for the videomaking/production values of it as for the hooping. Straight-up hooping wise though, I'd say Rob's "Hoopin' in the Tall Grass" from a few years ago -- one of the first videos I ever saw that really sparked my imagination. I can't seem to find it anywhere though (for purposes of link postage) Or the 2004 GrooveHoops promo vid. www.groovehoops.com/videos.html

That's a dreamy bit of filming. To me it looks like it may have been shot for some sort of advert, the setting, the progression through the landscape and the ending with all those other hoopers.

      I really enjoyed that.

      Thanks.

It said it was done as an entry in a juggling contest for the vid for Fat Boy Slim...but since it wasn't technically juggling, it didn't win...it really is cool, tho...I love the setting...wonder where it's at?

Technically it did win. They made a category up just for that video because the jugglers got all mad and said hooping wasn't juggling. And it's not, not really. We rarely let go of the hoop.

First of all, Martine, thank you for posting the GVHT vid...somehow, I've never seen it! Deep, tribal & amazing--so many first channelers/hoop madres in one video. Wow.

Sharna, aw shucks! Thank you! : > I am truly honored.

Like Beth I can't claim one favorite, but--now, don't roll your eyes, y'all!--despite appearances of nepotism, I will admit that the video that has inspired me the most (and definitely that I've watched the most!) is my sweetie Baxter, hooping to Tool's "Aenima": www.youtube.com/watch

      To me it's simply...grace.

The lovely in the second video of choice is Alexis...akaSheHoopsAlot. She used to be pretty active in putting up videos on tribe but I have noticed she's been absent for quite awhile. I miss seeing her here - she has been one of my favorite hoopers to watch, love her flow.

Alexis lives in the same city as I do. I run into her every now and then, but I don't think she's very active in the online hooping community anymore. I still see her downtown with her hoops once and a while & she's phenomenal to watch... Alexis was one of the people who inspired me to start hooping.

What a great thread idea, Caroleeena!!! I love it! You all have named some of my very favorite and treasured hooping videos already...ones that have motivated me, pulled me through so much and kept me an avid hooper consistently...so THANK YOU to all of you beautiful and wonderful hoopers out there!! Hooping has changed my life in so many beautiful and fantastic ways. One video I've been really appreciating lately is www.youtube.com/watch by Sharna Rose. There are so many great moments in this video. I especially love the isolation turns at 2:44 & 2:48, and the fantastic sequence between 2:50-3:00!!! Those duck-in/outs are on fire!!! And I love the person who nonchalantly just walks by....it makes me smile. :-) If that were me, I'd be freakin' out about that hooping!!! The flow with the awesome music is so wonderful.

Great thread to start Caroleena (and thank you for your submission, the act of Valkirie is chock full of inspiration!). Thanks everyone who has mentioned my Earthdance video...synchronistically enough, I was spinning with friends at Hippie Hill in SF earlier this year and a woman approached me somewhat shyly to say that she was the one who filmed me for that clip. Needless to say, a big hug and thanks ensued. I have been so busy with travel and a summer full of hooping that I realize it's been a *long* time since I've posted a vid, particularly one in ~flow~ so i am going to try and remedy that soon...

As has been stated several times, ONE favorite is almost impossible, but I found this one the other day in the favorites of the lovely Jewels (thanks for that sista). This is an amazing circus performer with incredible presence and some SICK moves...I was taking notes so fast and steady I have a full page of ideas I am working on from just this one...

Thankfully, my extensive background in contortionism will come in handy for this tutorial. Just kidding...yeah, some of the stuff is just...not...going to be genetically possible for me to accomplish, but yeah, some of those moves are completely original and incredible. Where do you guys *find* these videos??!! Thanks for posting. I've added a bunch to my favorites on my YouTube account.

    Hi!
I don't know how to post video yet...I'm not he most techie girl...but I absolutely LOVE Sharna Rose's Glory Days video in her backyard. I've probably seen it 2 dozen+ times. It never fails to cheer me up if I am alone or impress brand new hoopers if I am trying to show what is possible.

All you have to do is open the video that you like, highlight the address in the address bar, right-click and select the command "Copy", then come to Tribe, paste the address in your post and click "Submit". Tribe changes it to a link for you.

Also, if you make a mistake in a post you have already posted, you can click the "Back" button, go back, correct the item, click the "Submit" button again and it will post the new post over the old post. This only works for discussion groups though -- not blogs or pictures.

      Hope this helps.

        Sun, November 4, 2007 - 6:34 PM
The hard part about the question of which one video is your fave is that ... it's always changing. I'll find a video extremely inspiring, and then maybe I'll watch it a thousand times and learn some/all of the moves. When I progress past that, then something else strikes my fancy.

So I am going to vote based on the video with a ton of SPIRIT, in addition to some badass moves. My vote for the one video that absolutely embodies the joy, the possibility, the empowering nature of hoopdance -- and one I could watch over and over just to feel happy and fabulous -- is Sharna Rose's "Glory Days." (The link is above since it's already been mentioned). It's spring, her life is whirling around her, she's in hoop-bliss, nothing can stop her. I love it.

That said, I've been inspired by *all* of you over the years. When I see seasoned hoopers pushing boundaries, I feel challenged to try their moves, when I see newbie hoopers, I feel inspired by their fearlessness in posting a record of their first steps. It's nice to see how people on this thread are mentioning many different videos as a favorite. It proves that there really is no ONE "best" thing. Just a lot of potential inspiration, depending where the viewer is on her/his path.

        ~Love to you all~

I appreciate your words, Revolva, because I feel the same way. I hold a tender spot in my heart for all of the Hoopers represented here that I know personally or through Tribe. Each has been an inspiration at some point and I'm grateful for the influence. We each have something to offer.
          • Re: Your Favorite Hooping Video

            Sun, November 4, 2007 - 7:24 PM
I agree - almost every single video I've seen has inspired me in one way or another, whether it was a specific trick or the energy shown while hooping. It's hard to pick just one because thinking of a particular video usually reminds me of another one and on and on. Yes, it usually takes me about ten minutes to decide what flavor ice cream I want too.

I love the online hooping community because without all of these videos, many of us would be very isolated from other styles or tricks. Tribe and youtube have opened up such gigantic doors in my hooping world! Hee, I'll have to get back to you with just ONE favorite video after I give it some more thought :D

I really enjoy tracking progress through youtube videos - it's inspirational to me as a beginner.

I just need to find a way to haul my laptop outside so I can watch tutorials/practice at the same time instead of all this running back & forth ;]
        • Re: Your Favorite Hooping Video

          Sun, November 4, 2007 - 7:25 PM
Even though I cringe looking at some of my earlier videos, I agree that it does provide a great way to see how much I (and other people) have grown in a short amount of time. It's so inspiring to see someone now able to do a trick that a few months ago they weren't able to do or were having trouble with!

You just need to get some sort of projection system with a huge movie screen set up in your yard and connect it to your laptop! :D

WOW! What a treasure is being gathered here. So many beautiful videos of talented and radiant beings in one space! I have already gathered great inspiration from the videos here previously unseen...

Sharna and Al, I am honored to have made your favorites list :-) For some reason, that bassnectar video, I never posted here on hooping videos tribe so I'm thankful for the link here and grateful and humble to be in such great company.

As for my own FAVORITE, I must echo previous sentiments. I know my sweet sister Caroleeena said it needed to be only A favorite, but DAMN, that's difficult. That'd be like picking my favorite all time jam by musicians. It would be hard enough to pick a favorite band. However, over the next day or two, I will try to select "a" fave for this collection. Luckily, some of my treasured videos, also present in my youtube channel, are already listed here. I've been inspired and 'taught' by so many videos over the years through their sharing moments in flow. It's quite a gift to be allowed in to someone's creative practice or performance space. The dance muse is the most priceless learning tool (outside of personal practice) that I have experienced.

For the moment, since many favorites (and treasured hoop dance channels have been linked here) I would like to link a video that really makes me smile and reminds me to keep a lightness to hooping when the ring gets 'heavy'...

wow, it was so enjoyable to read all of your posts and revisit these videos. I couldn't agree more...all of these videos are amongst my favorites too.
There are so many good videos out there, that we almost need an academy awards for hooping videos. how do you choose only one? I agree, for me it also changes over the weeks ...I am constantly being inspired by all the great skills and styles. Its really tough to choose only one. I'm sorry Carolleena, but I have to post two that are completely different but yet both evoking a magical inspirational energy and super "wow" factor.

I love those video's too: that Dizzy Hips one is so inspiring (he really rocks it), and Erica's is amazing, she is such a shining light. I seriously watch every video from beginning to end and I find inspiration in each and every single persons movements and strength. My favourite video's are a bit like my emotions, they change from one minite to the next. I've been reading "Excuse me, your life is waiting" by Lynn Grabhorn and I'm really feeling love right now, today. I feel very humbled that Nicki, Al, Margo and Revolva have choosen some of my video's, all I have ever wanted to do is share my joy like those who had already shared theirs before I even found a hoop. Without the tons and tons of inspiration that I have found on youtube, hooping.org and tribe I would never have found this beautiful and empowering art form which is really making me get up and live :)

I'm so looking forward to the new video favourites and the Kids like Erica are just going to blow us all away.

No doubt Etta~ Dizzy Hips' video has a wealth of crazy moves with such a playful, creative spirit that has made me laugh out loud on a few occasions. I've still got to pick a more 'flow' oriented video...

Diana~ Thanks for posting Erica's vid. Erica is also one of my all-time favorite hoopers. Since Erica was 4, we've been joking about how she's going to be blowing our minds when we're no longer able bodied.- or even more likely - when we think we're still good:-)

Sharna~ thanks for the debut of your son's skilz! That's absolutely awesome that he's rocking your fire hoop. What an inspiring mom you are - for all of us!

My favorite hoop videa isn't anywhere to be found anymore. It was the girl hooping in the flesh colored Bikini @ Aqua Girl 2007. If I remember correctly, she was a hoop partner of Anah's. The reason that was my favorite was because everytime I watched it I wanted to get up and go hoop, the way I want to get up and dance when I hear really good music . . . it had the exact same effect on me.

Other than that pretty much all the vids I see are inspiring.
Lately, I've watched this one a numbe rof times because I really her arm movements while she's shoulder hooping . . . and I like the transition from hands to shoulders again at about :28 www.youtube.com/watch

You can post it Ann. I just want to avoid people putting lots of videos into a single post. It takes at least three minutes to watch a video. If someone posts 10, that's 30 minutes of video. And likely they will highlight one that someone else would have contributed had they had an opportunity to get a word (er, post) in edgewise. So post the socks one if you can find it. And I'll look for the Aqua Girl too. I used to have it bookmarked I think...

I think Kara's hooping is just sublime--so graceful & nuanced. Her hubby Rob has some great videos too.

Re: the Aqua Girl--the last time folks were talking about it, I believe it was discovered that it had been removed from youtube. Which is a bummer. I enjoyed the distinctly improvisational feel of that vid--the wildness of her moves somehow stitched together with a certain fluidity.

I have really enjoyed this post. I've watched things over a period of time, it's given me tea break material for ages! I wasn't going to post because I can't choose I have so many favorites! But I've seen many of my favorites pop up here anyway. However, I just watched something and then spotted a video I didn't know in the menu to the side and found this girl.

Although she's not too tricky in the first part, she has lovely flow and grace. But she does awesome stuff with her feet in the second bit and I think she has a real style. If only I could undulate like that! This is going into my favorites collection, so I thought I'd share it with you all.

Ooh, I hesitate to do this, because there are so many videos I love. So many of you have inspired me for the past 3 years, and some of the "oldies" come to mind (movies, not people ;)) with fondness, like Anah's demo in various outfits and places, looking stylish and cutting-edge, Christabel outside at night with a crowd, doing fun jumps and barrel rolls with a big smile and tons of energy...

But this one is my recent favorite: www.youtube.com/watch It's Jasmine of the Whirlygirlz, and I just love the way she moves. Precise, elegant, musically, cute, hot. I love her control and rhythm, and she is beautiful!

    This is a fun thread!

Thank you, all of you, for posting your videos. For inspiring hoopers across the globe. I think we have a precious hooping community, and I really appreciate the lack of ego, from what I can see. Thank you for protecting the goodness and love of hooping by leaving ego out of it. I know it can't always be easy when you get to be superstars and have lots of hoopers in one area over there on the west coast. So thank you and kudos.

oh, and lots of hoop-hugs. :) Someday I want to visit CA and hoop with you lovely souls!

He laughed too. That's saying something...as supportive as he is with my new hobby...he says it all looks the same and, "why do you stalk YouTube?" Same reason he gets out and rides his 4 wheeler...it's his sanity. Hooping is my sanity.
Anyway...I got a good belly laugh out of Baxter's post and lots of fantastic ideas and inspiration from all the other posts. Now, I need to buy a video camera so I can post a video to show ya'll how *bad* I am. I mean bad in the literal since...not metaphoric.

I can't believe I am still adding to this long, long thread. I had a sudden memory of a video of Baxter that had a huge impact on me emotionally. This clip displays some mad skills, but that is not the reason I love it. For a long time, I found myself returning again and again to watch it. I love the setting, the shimmery green trees that look spooky and alive behind the concentrated movement of the hooper. The music, and particularly, the voice are moving and painful to my ear. There is a point at 1:50 where Baxter's hands open up suddenly and expressively in response to the music. Baxter had been my teacher for some time at that point, and I was just beginning to get to know him. For some reason, this video felt to me like a glimpse inside, and I felt very moved by it.

I'm pretty fond of blueberry's style. You can tell she's having fun, but she's still got that preciseness that comes with circus traning.

Beyond those I love anah's jam video.

I discovered this video of Christabel hooping at the Winter Music Conference in Miami shortly after I started hooping and it provided endless inspiration for me: the tricks, the dancing, the way she used the entire space, her sense of humor when she made a mistake, her graceful flow, and her sexy confidence all gave me something to aspire to. That was the first example of hoopdance I saw that truly integrated hooping and dancing, and it made me want to get off my ass and hoop every time I watched it!

I joined this tribe specifically to post this video... Hoopalicious "some casual practice" youtube.com/watch

It just looks like so much fun!

This is a great thread. It's so nice to look at all of your favorites instead of clicking random youtube links. Thanks!

I know, I know, I already posted and shouldn't add to the already huge thread.... but.... I don't know how on earth I forgot about the first hooping video I ever bookmarked and the one video I go to whenever I feel too lazy to hoop! What's great about Anah is that she could just waist hoop for 3 min and I would not be bored! As much as she has some sick moves to showcase, the tricks don't ever overpower the flow and that is what I love the most... SO, as much as I loooooooove my previous 3 videos and they are on top of my favorites, this one would rank first overall for me :-)

I don't think this thread can get too long. I just love it! It's a great compilation of favorites. Here's one of my favorites that I didn't post. I love this for the hooping, the dance, the costuming and the music. It has such theatricality. This is Elena Lev performing in the Cirque du Soleil show Alegria:

Thanks Hoola Monster - I haven't seen those.

The first was Sass silhouette hooping
      c. 2005 in a beautiful space on the coast of W Africa. She's definitely been rockin' the hoop for quite some time. Sass~ I hadn't seen this before. LOVELY. Bringing the hoop up from the calf! DAMN!

The second was called Sunday INspiration by Hooper Cat. Great video in another beautiful setting. She looks so angelic in her white dress. I think her other name (on youtube and maybe here on tribe) is llsureal.

yea, I've been 'You Tube Stalking' both of them. Thanks for the new term, Eta :)

The Sass silhouette hoop video is the one I've been using to explain hooping to my friends & show them what it's all about. I love everything about that video - the setting, her hoop style, all of it. And I agree - there's something very angelic and mesmerizing about Cat's white dress.

    Miss saturn burlesque hooping.
It's like a comedy routine. I think it's hilarious. it's not the kind of hooping i'm all about, but she presents it with personality.

The groove hoops burning man 2004 video. I remember this being one of my biggest inspirations in hooping. i'd watch it a million times. I can still play it in my head easially.

      Fun choices Ammre!
Miss Saturn is one of the first hoopers I ever met ~ 5 years ago. She performed a similarly funny (but with top and less drops) performance with the Bindlestiff Family circus here in Chapel Hill. i was SO PSYCHED to meet her b/c I hadn't shared hoop space with many who were INTO hooping at that point. She really inspired me - not to get into Burlesque act so much as making me want to join a circus. She definitely showed me that it is possible to make a living doing something you love.

And that Burning Man Video is so funny to me! I get kind of embarrassed when I see it b/c of the really pristine baby pink dress I'm wearing. Bax and I had set out to a Southern Hospitality party to drink some Mint Juleps or something. I was dressed in the most Southern Belle (with parasol!) outfit I owned and, of course, we would FINALLY find a hoop throw down. So - I laugh every time I see the vid b/c half of the hoopers are either topless or cheekless and there I am looking so oddly prudish.

I do appreciate Stefan putting that video together. That was a kick ass afternoon jam which rolled into a magical sunset just before the burn. I haven't seen that video in a couple of years. It brings back a lot of memories. WoW. A lot of memories! Thanks for posting that!

Hmm. I've watched this video before, and Julia, for some reason -- I had no idea that was you. Everyone's flashing by so quickly. That's so funny to hear your story about the southern belle dress. I can't *believe* you weren't wearing goggles, a thong and a cowboy hat, like a "normal" burner. :)

i didn't know that was you jewels! i am giggling now, cuz i am the one with the little shorts and pasties on! it was my very first couple of days hooping, and i learned fast that pasties wouldn't stay on. sorry i missed that amazing jam that you were at - looked like so much fun!

Oh wow.. I think that Burning Man video was my second-ever hoop thing to see, after Ariel's Living Room Hooping....

.. and I just realized that the "incredibly fun new double hoop move" I've been working on, since seeing it recently in a video featured up at the top of the list (a Sprocketts show?) is the one that the guy at the very end of this video is doing, just as he hits the camera. 2004. Too funny!

            X.

I was wondering who that was in pasties, Jasmine! Sorry I didn't get to meet ya back then. I think we would've enjoyed spinning together.

Xta~ that guy at the end attacking the camera is Wheylan from Groovehoops. He's one of the first folks I ever saw rockin' two hoops.

Michele~ I'm feeling for you girl. I'm assuming you mean the Burning Man Video and the groovehoops crew? I didn't know you hooped with those guys (&gals). I know it probably doesn't help, but brief images threaded together don't give a fully accurate image of a week in the desert. I know several folks hoopin' it up in that video were having extremely tumultuous experiences - and that week really changed their lives - for better or for worse. For whatever reason you couldn't go, it was probably for the best, even if you never know why. I'm sure its very disappointing and difficult none the less. I hope watching the video starts to heal any wounds from the past.

How opposite our experiences of the week? I had done absolutely no prep for burning man and had no plan or deep desire to go. Then suddenly Spiral and Elias decided they were driving to the playa and had room for gear and maybe a passenger if Bax and I (either or both) wanted to go. So then, it was a frantic ride to get a ticket, book flights and get stuff together. I was sooo NOT ready for a week of desert costumes and such. (As you may be able to tell from the pink dress;-) and had little idea of what to expect from the experience. I guess the trip helped to face and heal (at least temporarily) some old wounds. However, I can definitely relate to that feeling of isolation or distance from those who were your tribe as I have experienced a cycle of that in regards to certain hoop relationships. At times, it can be a profound pain, but there is much to learn from human conflict and division and the practice of seeing past that into our undeniable connectedness. In fact, according to some, conflict is the greatest teacher of the virtue of empathy as it is more challenging to have love and understanding for those who we have conflict and difference.

      peace sister...

no that's what i was referring to though i didn't mean either that it was super fun and awesome for everyone as i know that it had some difficult ups and down for people, including me the in way that i didn't get to go...which just plain sucks but it's totally not the fault of anyone other than myself. i hope i didn't let on to that. i think that what hurts about it is it's just a chance that i didn't act on that wound up being a defining moment for many people, and i think now if i where to go i would feel weird about hooping... like i was trying to recreate something that doesn't exisit anymore. i think it's ok though because through tribe i feel able to connect to the hooping community again which really fills a void for me.

Michele, let me just say that if you were to go to Burning Man now and hoop there would be NO THING weird about it--I just went for the first time this past year and it was an indescribably amazing hoop experience--there are new pieces of hoop history being created all the time, everywhere--we were stunned by how many fantastic hoopers were at BMan who we had never met/heard of through tribe or in our travels to different hoop communities--I really hope you can swing it in '08, it will be incredible.

            1. That 2004 BM video was so incredible. I can't believe that I have never seen it.

            2. Jewels, you look lovely in your pink dress and that seems like a great BM costume (especially if you are going to a party to drink mint juleps)

            3. Michele, WHEN you go to burning man you are going to rock your hoops so hard and you are going to double over in laughter that you ever worried about such things.

            4. I am not going to BM this year and lately watching videos of the playa makes me quite sad.

            5. I don't know what I have been doing so wrong at burning man to always miss all of these kick ass hoop jams.

            6. I don't know why I numbered all of these thoughts.

              1.You are TOTALLY cute, surprise!

2.Thanks for the encouragement on the pink dress.

              3. I totally agree that Michele will rock the playa whenever she makes it out there- and DEFINITELY should make it out there if there's desire to experience "burning man."

              4. That was the only serious hoop jam I remember witnessing that year. Mostly, a couple of us would be hooping to a some incredible music with no other hoopers on the horizon.

              5. The numbering was so cute and efficient, I couldn't resist.

Aside from all the videos listed above, and virtually anything featuring Karis or Spiral, this is one of my new favoritest videos:

    youtube.com/watch

I love how this woman merges samba and hooping -- that's the kind of hooping I hope to be able to do someday, once I figure out how to walk a straight line without the hoop falling down.

OK, choosing a "favorite" is something I don't do in ANY area of my life - but I have to put this one into the pot. I don't know her name (her user name is MrsTruth4Us) - but the simple grace of her movements was an inspiration to me when I first saw it, and I still find it very moving. This is actually one of the earliest hooping videos that I found, when I was just beginning to hoop and to search for videos - and I know she was a relative beginner when she made it, which makes it all the more amazing. Enjoy!
