Song: Paula Cole, "Feelin' Love".

This is the sexiest song I have ever heard. Look up the lyrics. They're almost too dirty to post here.

Today was a rough day.

So I picked up my hoop and thought about the one who makes me feel "like a sticky pistil leaning into a stamen", and this is what happened.

True to form, I spent an entire song trying to find grace and ended it by tripping over my own feet. Classic Marlenah, right there!

Today, to try to get round this, my husband Dave decided to take charge and film me and then edit it into something. It's his first attempt with new software. It took me about 15 minutes to get over the camera and my fear of it, but eventually I got into what I was doing and he just did his own thing, bossing me about like a proper director!

If I'd known we were going to do this I wouldn't necessarily have subjected you all to my legs like this, but it just sort of happened.

I'm very nervous of posting this. Silly isn't it? I love watching everyone else. I just wish I could have managed at least one smile!
i've only been lurking here lately as i took an unintended sabbatical from hooping for what seems like most of the last six months. i can give you 100 reasons and i can give you none.
anyway, it's nelson mandela's 90th birthday today (long may he live!) and i simply had to break out the hoop, and my favorite madiba t-shirt for the occasion. you're literally seeing my first hooping in months, captured here. hey, it's the thought that counts. and my dog chai makes an appearance too!
I hope I am not annoying anyone & over-posting, but I have felt the inclination to make videos of hoopin' lately! In this video I am trying to let go & just dance through the hoop to music I love~ in this case it is Dave Matthews Band. I listened to them all the time about 10 years ago, and then just recently re-connected with their music! Just wanted to share my practice as of late...

I'll try to film a video outside soon. It's also tough when you have a cat who wants to hog all the action. In this first one, I couldn't really bust loose because, when I went to turn on the camera, Icky came and laid down in the hoop and decided to nap. Well I was not giving up so I decided to hoop around him til he got up and left. Only he never did. At the very end he raises his head like, "Are you almost done?" That cat.

I've spun fire and danced with fans and palm lights but never had the desire to fire hoop. With the other toys the flame is always a arms reach away. Not so with the hoop. But boy did I get over that quick!!!! The video is only the second half of my first go round. Thank you to Mari for filming. The second time I lite up that night I wore Mari's kevlar gloves and was doing lifts and verticals and all sorts of stuff!!! What the video didnt show was me getting stuck in a vertical shoulder hoop yelling "How do I get out of this!?!?!" (befor eI was wearing the gloves and was brave enough to grab the hoop) and the epic launch into the side of the hill. Oops!!! Thank god the fog in SFmakes everything wet, we have enough fires in Cali right now.
An amazing chance to rock out with some of my fav. musicians! Totally a treat to get on down with these fellaz who are bridging the gap between live and electronic music. Absolutely 100% improv which makes it totally rocking to get up on stage and just really go with the flow.

Note: the sound quality is low, but the performance is pretty rockin!
I've been practicing being more playful on stage, interacting with the audience more, smiling, dancing and just having fun.

Sometimes while performing you can get all caught up in the fact you are on stage and must do well, and you get too serious. Its silly you must remind yourself to smile!

I have had a rocky old road with my ego, addressing issues about ownership. I know deep in my heart that I am here to share but my ego does not like sharing, it does not like losing the connection it has to that which defines 'me'. Only last week, thanks to Eckhart Tolle, I came to a major realization about myself that has been building since the 10 day silent retreat...and now my connection is back :-) and I know that all is as it should be and I know the path I must travel...sorry too much information from me again :-)

I have been out of hooping for a while now. I had some surgery in December, and I didn't really start hooping again until about the end of May. Since Dec I've put on A LOT of weight, I have been out of work for almost 3 months now, and to say I've been depressed is putting it very lightly.

BUT, I went to Decompression 2 weekends ago (for Burning FLipside, the big Texas regional burn) and found my flow again. I hadn't fire hooped well in a very long while, and for some reason, it just came back to me at Decompression. I performed this past Sunday at The Tri-Cult Devival (www.devival.com) here in Austin, and it was so much fun!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVrz_lYZQ04

It's been really good for me to refind my flow, it is the only time I'm really happy right now. I've still got a lot of work, I need to get more comfortable with some of the moves I already do, and learn some new ones. But that is less important to me right now than the fact that I am comfortable again, and that I enjoy it WHILE I'm doing it.

It's been smokey here from the fires so I haven't been able to do much hooping outside, (or at all because i don't have any space inside right now...but that will change in a month! whew!) but today was clear and had a nice breeze...yay!

the first one is me being a complete dork and feelin' the music to Gorillaz...I ended up groovin' to part of the second song too because I just couldn't help it...

the second one is a slower hooping to my current fave song by Fleet Foxes...it's good for me because I don't often hoop slowly and I find when I do, I really enjoy it...and I think I channel my 14 years of ballet, and it brings out that more flowy side of my dancing, which comes more naturally to me.

my next goal is to learn how to edit vids on my mac (i know it's probably super easy, I just haven't gotten around to learning it) so that I can not force you guys to look down my shirt, and get weird close-ups of me when starting and stopping the camera!

After the last video I posted where my mother laughs all too joyously at my mess ups during a regular afternoon practice, I decided we should do a video of the two of us hooping together. It's been a wonderful bonding experience for us, and it always provides lots of laughs for the both of us. Oh, and as promised, shout out to the Birmingham girls, Victoria and Jessica, you can see in the video I finally got those arm stalls, unfortunately, also showcased in the video is my attempt at a leg stall, which didn't go quite so well. I felt like if i wore a headband I could channel said "warrior hooping" better. err... Anyhow, this video is really about my mother. She's been hooping for a couple months now, and she started doing so as a fitness/attempt to lose weight thing. I think she's doing pretty well, but of course, I'm partial :) Anyhow, the laughs this video brough both of us (and my father) are priceless.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
Host Leah D'Emilio is a natural hooper and was loads of fun to interview with. I look forward to seeing her and the crew hoop more and share the joys!

A special thanks to the Universe, the crew at Mahalodaily.com, Vibrantfit.com, Mia Hanson, and Studio A Dance for bringing it all together. This was my first press release and though I was feeling a bit like a reindeer caught in headlights I think it came together nicely as an intro to what we do.

I am JUST beginning to understand the flow with 2 hoops and you will see some disconnectedness....I even forget for a moment I had 2 hoops in my hands! I tried the 3-beat weave, I THINK I did it, thanks to Sharna's awesome tutorial!! Anyways, this video is just some practice I thought I would share.

I decided to pick up hooping as a way to lose my post pregnancy weight, and have NOT been able to put it down since. It's been since about early April of this year when I started. This is a video my friend Genny took, who actually bought me my first hoop for my birthday. We kind of started a hooping craze here in our area! You can see our friend on the right who is a brand new hooper (I'm on the left in the blue skirt), and near the end of the video you can see another friend of ours join in too! I love spreading the joy of hooping! In this video I'm pretty much just having fun. When I'm actually dancing I forget to do all my fancy stuff! Thats ok though, just wanted to show how contagious it is.

Howdy Happy Hoopers!!

Can I JUST SAY that I love this tribe a lot. I check it several times a day, if I can. ;)
I love how welcoming it is, the feedback is INCREDIBLE and it is an honor to know each one of you as a hooper and a person. Totally pumped for Hoop Camp Retreat and other events that will bring us all together in person.

Here is my latest practice video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHm054ODzhw
My backyard isn't ideal. I do believe this week I will finally get around to relocating the silly shrubbery that our landlord planted. That little tree just gets TRAMPLED while dancing out there. haha =)

Music : The Afro-Latin Groove-Fried Neckbones & some homefries
This track is so funny to me. Being a vegetarian the idea of fried neck bones grosses me out. But I really dig this song, its got a great groove.

SO MY QUESTION:
While performing in front an audience what do you do when you loose control of the hoop? or even drop it?
During a fire performance a couple weeks ago, I was using my friends hoop which is much lighter than mine with the weight being unfamiliar I lost control during an isolation!!! EEK! thank goodness it did not go flying towards the crowd...
I was confident in my recovery but was wondering what you fabulous hoopers do when something like this occurs. I know we all aren't prefect! =) right??

I really respect the hoopers that post here in this tribe and would love to hear your responses.

Thank you so much!!

Keep on spinnin'

I got my HoopingHarmony Aurora about a week or two ago and I've finally made a couple of videos. I was really stuck trying to decide on a Psihoop or an HH hoop, but I went with the HH and I'm very happy with my choice.

The first video is, unfortunately, sideways because I refuse to pay $30 to upgrade my video editing software just so I can rotate a video. And sadly, the music in this video is very quiet because it was filmed at about 10pmish and I didn't want to upset my neighbors. But it is all dark so mostly you just see the hoop, which is mighty pretty, I might add.

The second video was filmed the next day (after I realized the first video could only be viewed sideways) at about 2pmish. I tried to make my apartment as dark as possible so the leds would stand out, but even with the light they still look pretty rad. And it's a pretty silly video because I am a huge dork, but i like it. It does have some music but it's kind of quiet still so you may want to turn up your volume.

On the way, we felt more and more drawn to live in Colorado, so we decided to stay in Indy for a bit, recop some funds and head back. SO here we are in our new house in Broad Ripple and I'm much happier about being in Indiana than I thought I would be. There is a growing hoop community here (I didn't know anyone who hooped when I left) and I plan on starting a hoopjam in the park this weekend. So here we are, new digs big enough to hoop in, a yard and even a garage for wintertime hoopiness! For all of you~a short video in our new house with my honey providing some new live electronica in the background. He's my favorite hoop music! ;)

They're poking and proding him trying to see why he's not gaining weight and having some tremors. He's a really happy baby overall, but sometimes when he's fussy I hoop for him and he calms down as he watches the colors spin. So I hooped for him today for calmness and healing. And I hooped for me today for the same reasons. Watching these videos, I'm not really "impressed" with my hooping...I found it sloppy and weird in spots, but then I remembered that I was really only hooping for one audience and he loved it...and it helped me find some focus today. I'm sharing them here because, well first...what a weird place to hoop...the space was crazy tight, trying not to hit monitors or his bed....and because I found the greater hooping community to be extremely generous with their loving, healing thoughts....so please bring them on for my little dude. Thanks y'all

Hello, I figure it's time to introduce myself. I've been lurking in this tribe for a while watching all the hooping videos I could find but haven't really posted anything yet so here's my first real post with my first real hooping video!:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho2kSSLr1pA

About 2 months ago I was introduced to the hoop (to me, it's basically been crack in circle form for the past 7 weeks) by Coehlo. She was preparing to teach a hoop class and had rounded up a group of friends to run through everything one fine Saturday morning in April. I remember going into it thinking I've never been able to do this as a kid, I'm really not sure I'll be able to do this but I'm going to give it my all. and that's just what I did.. and I haven't stopped since.

So earlier today I discovered I can record clips longer than 60sec on my camera by adjusting some settings and immediately thought OOH! I can't wait to record myself and see how silly I look while hooping! so that's just what I did. And this video is the result.

Enjoy! :)

Beth and I are taking a much needed beach trip with Erica (and her sweet friend Lily) and River (Wynter is home with Dad) down at St. Simon's Island, GA. It is absolutely beautiful down here and we've enjoyed many hours hooping on the beach and under the amazing oak trees covered in spanish moss. I've introduced Beth and the girls to Buffy the Vampire Slayer...and they're hooked ;-). We've walked tons, swam, hooped, and all climbed in the king sized bed for Buffy fests. It may not sound like much of an adventure for some, but for two hooping mamas, its been thrilling....it a calm silly kinda way.

Hi Everyone,

We've done a really good job up until now of naming most of our videos. Recently I've noticed we seem to be straying a bit from our original vision and naming criteria though. We're getting back to "My first video" and "A cool video" and these names don't tell us much about what's actually in the thread. In fact, we could conceivably end up with several threads with the same name! That makes searching the thread almost impossible.

I'd like to make some suggestions:

- Tell us your name. Instead of My First Video, try Caroleeena's First Hooping Video or Caroleeena hooping in her living room
- Quantify it by moves in the Video: Caroleeena Leg Hooping
- Or the location: Caroleeena Hooping at Shakori Hills

If you have other suggestions for how we can keep this resource searchable, I'd love to hear them. We were doing a great job at first. I imagine some of the things turning up now are just related to new people on the thread. Even so, we can do better. Got any ideas?

Happy Hoopiness to you all,

Anyway, this is my attempt at a compilation that shows some flippy/bendy/dancey moves. I'm so new to editing pieces of video together! Maybe in this thread someone could give me advice about how to increase the size slightly (would that help with quality)? It's way more fuzzy than other stuff I've posted from the same location. :(

As for background -- the brighter parts are recent general practice and the darker stuff is from February when I was rehearsing a "Flashdance" act for the Hubba Hubba Revue in SF. (It's a long song, so I threw in some Flashdance-leotard-dance drama to fit with "Tiny Dancer.") If you can hang through the fuzziness, it does get brighter again while I stand on my head, hooping on one foot -- and attempting the splits in the air -- at around 4 minutes.

And by the way, some of you have posted videos with your guilty pleasure music. For the past few weeks, I've been listening to Elton John while cooking dinner, driving to the ocean, going for a jog, crying, smiling -- and of course, hooping. I love you, Elton John!
I gotta give props to the Carolina Rollergirls team, specifically the Debutante Brawlers, who totally rocked it last night. I knew they were badass before, but last night they were skating hard in the 100 degree temps. I had planned to wear boots, but quickly nixed that and shifted to barefoot style when I realized there was no AC. Scott & I were dripping with sweat even before we started.

Howdy hoop friends,

I thought I'd share some new footage on my 6-month hoop "twinniversary"--started getting into twins last December and I've just been loving this vertical stuff. Yesterday was absolutely beautiful and so, just after some kind of association of WWII vets cleared out (I actually heard "Taps" being played) I took refuge, along with several loud birds, in the lovely public breezeway at the local town commons.

Here are a couple of examples of what we call "vertical rolling" with twins, with isolations and weaves in a variety of speeds and attitudes: "Sun" (hoop in front of you), "Bow" (hoop on either side), and "Moon" (hoop behind the back):

Slow one/Patty Griffin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y1DtJvmpp8

Faster/Paul Westerberg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkd103f6W4A

And here is some single-hoop footage where I'm trying to push it as fast as possible, linking breaks, paddles, and reverses in the tightest sequences I'm capable of--the track features Mos Def with Massive Attack and is called, with fitting rastafarian flair, "I Against I." For me it is a uniquely powerful "warrior" hooping track, reminding me that my most formidable foe is my own self--facing my own shortcomings, mistakes, and flaws keeps requiring more of me, and I keep trying to build up that courage and strength. Mos Def helps.

Hi all!

Here's my newest video I thought I'd share. I'm hooping with twin hoops in the rose garden gazebo in Eugene, Oregon to Mason Jennings "The Light". I've been inspired by Revolva returning from the Hoop Convergence with many new tricks to pass on, and she made my super light pair of twin hoops that I'm playing with. Also, Spiral and Julia's Sustained Spinning video from the HC inspired my learning the double hoop jumpthroughs. I've been working on my tossing during the weave that goes: toss under the opposite arm, then catch back on the right side. Check it out!

I'm not happy with the video quality of it. I'm manifesting a decent video camera to come to me, so I can make clearer videos in the future - any recommendations of video cameras you love???

Sorry about the grainy quality and the invisibility of the white hoops against the white gazebo roof. However, I thought I should share anyway!

Nothing much new, hooping wise, except for the new poi moves I'm working on. Ann's recent Flowers are so incredible I had to try it. Also her impeccable twin isolations gave me an idea that is still in the rough stages, but looks neat, I think..

At Flipside, Anna Vlada taught me the "in front and behind the head weave type" thing. (I've tried to teach myself but could only learn it with instruction. Thanks, Anna!) I need much more practice to clean it up. She also showed me a release move that I modified and then string repeats together. Working on reverse weave, too, but it is so difficult.

So, I tried to get a little more creative with the video so I hope you enjoy!

I wanted to post this one video now because I'm still just humming over the weekend. Somehow I have to put myself back together and make in to work today. We caught some more hooping debauchery that we can post soon.

This video was shot Monday on our fourth day as I was trying to squeeze some last drops out of the lemon before finishing packing. There is some of the HP technique that I'm working out, some isolation pops and breaks that I love including this weird mechanical looking isolation break, and also some of the knee break/double break stuff I'm playing with.
I LOVELOVELOVE the extreme joy emanating from this first vid, and how deeply moved the judges and audience were. This video is from the audition for the Norwegian talent show. The boy is 8 years old and made it to the final. It caused a hoop mania, and newspapers report that hoops are sold out at stores and importers all over the country. This video gave me sweet chills:
A really good turn out this month, old and new alike. You instantly see Beatrix, Diana and Sue, then its some newcomers whose names I don't know yet, then John on his first visit, later @ 1.08 you see Karen and her mother up the far end, Karen is in black and her charming daughter had crashed out .. awwww .. but she was good. 3 generations hooping together is wonderful !!

I am in there making my usual mistakes, but it was a great fun afternoon in this Hooping Cathedral. John certainly illustrated some new tricks. A two hour session is so good.

Diana allowed me to play some of my mp3 stuff through her sound system. I had made a hooping compilation especially for the occasion. It starts with Tom Browne - Funkin' for Jamaica, then Sergio Mendes - Encanto 2008 - E Vamos La and the final track is Cafe del mar - Vargo - Talking one laughter + lots of hoop clatter, lol.

Apologies for my bad editing, I forgot to add transitions and I think one clip in the middle is repeated. But you will get the idea of the fun we had .. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDhWC-GVM10

So my sweet lotus, my daughter, was in her school talent show! It went very well and aside from her routine being misplaced a bit, she didn't care! She loved being on stage and wowing the crowd! She had just been working on isolations (still a bit tricky for her) and working with reversals, all of its still pretty new to her, but she worked really hard to get the nerve to do it on stage. The deal was, she was going to just repeat her routine if she moved through it too fast, but that went pear shaped...
She (and everyone!) is so tickled and happy about her performance! This was a much needed gate for her... :)

Thanks for watching!

I made this tutorial for Raven. She asked about the "Beam Me Up" move and I thought I would go over lifts from the waist in general by way of explaining that. At the beginning, I spend just a few seconds focusing in on Mudler preening himself just because I think that's so cute. Please bear with me. Hopefully this makes sense and will help. Enjoy!
