In this video I have included all the things (that I've managed to capture on video) that has been influenced by the hoop one way or the other. Thanks for the hoop I have become more open minded and willing to experience new things. Also I have included a few friends I've introduced to it.

Transitions - Including Plane Bending and Grip Changes

I've had a lot of folks write and ask me to make a video about transitions. That's really hard since every transition is unique and we can transition between hoop moves, planes, directions, speeds, levels and dance moves as well as taking the hoop on and off the body. We also must transition between grip changes to accommodate all these things. So I tried to figure out what things transitions have in common. I decided it was plane bending utilizing the axis and accommodated by grip changes,. so I made a tutorial based on those ideas and included a quick fix for creating a move inventory by plane and practicing first within the plane and then by bending the plane. Then I offer some exercises for developing your ability to improv and discovering you own transitions. Hopefully it makes sense. I'd love your feedback as this is a challenging topic to teach. (It was also challenging to try to pass all these ideas on in less than 10 minutes. In fact, it I found it impossible. I have at least four versions on my computer now, all of them 15 minutes each -- and I'm confused as to what I covered in each one now! Le sigh... Hopefully I got most things in this one and it will prove helpful anyway.)

I have posted the longer version on Vimeo, which allows videos over 10 minutes, unlike YouTube. I also broke it into two parts and posted those on YouTube for folks who have trouble viewing Vimeo.

World AIDS Day - Remembering my Father

Hey Hoopers! Happy Holidays to all. :-)

This week every year the world takes a moment to remember those we have lost and those who are suffering from the AIDS epidemic. We hear less and less every year about this disease. Although we may not care to admit it, disease awarness comes in and out of fashion. We heard much about AIDS in the 90s, the threat seemed so real and many of us touched by the first wave of contractions from the 80s fought hard to bring awareness and warnings to others, while fighting to keep those we loved alive. As the years passed and the drugs improved, the threat seemed to wane and many forgot. The effected population shifted and many now feel that they are safe. Once a year we remember and once a year we ask you to be vigilent. Although the life expectency is longer now, HIV is still a real threat... to everyone. I ask that you care for own safety and those around you. Please use protection and spread awareness to others. And if you can... help those still suffering. Light a candle, donate to chairity, spread the word. I thank you for reading this. This week is especially important to me. I lost my father to AIDS on Dec 5th, 1996. Every year this aligns with World AIDS Week... and I feel that the world is remembering with me. Below is my story....

When I was in the 4th grade my father was diagnosed HIV positive. I spent half of my childhood knowing my father was going to die. He fought hard against his illness and I had many good years with him. But in December of my senoir year of high school, just two months before my... 18th birthday, he lost his battle to AIDS and the world lost an amazing soul. My father taught me how to love... the world, others... and myself. It was important to him that my brother and I lived our lives and expirienced fully the joys and the expiriences of our youth. He was an amazing father... but nothing could prepare me for the loss I endured after he passed on. I spent many years in denile and pain, doing my best to forget. It took me ten years before I was really ready to deal with my loss. Now thirteen years after his death, I finally feel as if I have come out on the other side... to a place where I can remember. The pain will always be there, but now the joy of what I had and who he was is stronger and I can remember and celebrate the good. His love will be with me always. I dance this dance in rememberence of all he shared with me.

Thank you for watching. :-)

Ha! Got enough "T's" in that Title!?! I didn't post this before because I'd posted it in the Video Tutorial tribe but it occurs to me that many people in this tribe don't belong to that tribe so I thought I'd come back and post it here now. Please forgive me for the music being so loud. I was getting over the flu and my ears were all messed up and I could hardly hear.

I think that I figured out the 5 beat weave. I have a headache from trying to work it out in my head. =P hehe. I wanted to know if I'm doing it right. I have to let go of the hoop once on each side. I think that is how Sharna does it too. But I wanted some feedback on if I'm doing it right or if there is another way. Thanks all!
And Thanks to bhoops for challenging me to figure it out. I wouldn't have even tried it had she not suggested it!

Caroleeena in Kevin Bacon's new music video

I'm in Kevin Bacon's new music video. Here's the video. The story is below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWOi4SGCJHI

Early this year, in this very Tribe, we were discussing how YouTube has begun either pulling our videos down or taking the sound out of them claiming that we are infringing on the copyright of music companies by playing music we own, dancing to it and sharing our dances with our friends. (I still think it qualifies as "Fair Use" but I won't go there again.) Since then I've been trying to use the music of people who share their music freely. I prefer music of friends who are musicians or people who are sharing their music freely on their websites or MySpace pages or music that is simply not copyrighted. On the very day this conversation was taking place, my friend Betty called and told me that Kevin Bacon was giving away a song on his website (turns out he has a band with his brother Michael, called Tha Bacon Brothers) and was asking people to dance to it in their living room, shoot some video and post it on his youtube page. She said he and his brother were going to select from the entries and make a video for their new song. The timing couldn't have been more perfect ... except for one thing. It was the last day to submit a video! It was Valentine's Day and I had a hoop performance, for which I was already dressed, so I figured, "What the hell?" I downloaded the song, listened to it once, shot a short video, started it uploading to YouTube and left for my performance. And I forgot all about it.

This was that dance (not one of my best but, again, I didn't really know the song):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEStxc2fSGk

Weeks later, I got a message from someone on Youtube. They said, "Have you seen that video of Kevin Bacon watching your dance video? It's on his page." and I was like, "Whuh!?!" I went to the page and, sure enough, over his shoulder, there I am -- dancing in my living room.

Me watching Kevin Bacon watching me was one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had in my life. In the video, I was wearing my flamenco dress for the performance I'd had and it's funny to hear them speculate about whether or not I'm Spanish (which, technically, I am. I was born on a Naval base in Rota, Spain, though I didn't grow up there.) Kevin even says, "I never thought hula hoops would come back." Hahahaha! That cracks me up.

That video is here and I am at about :25 seconds into it (it makes me blush even now):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZp-QTNpNdY

Then, in April, they announced that 10 people were selected to be in a new video they were making for the song -- and I was one of them. That video is here and they announce me about 1:30 into it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhXFPq_bBn0

You'll notice they give a shout out to "The Dirty Leprechauns". Well, funny thing, after I saw the video of them watching my video, my friends and I were having a costume party (The Dirty Leprechaun Party) at Thunder's house and we decided to make another video! Someone had told me that the submission date was extended (though apparently it wasn't) so I figured, "Why not?" I delight in our weirdness and we were dressed in these ridiculous outfits anyway and I thought it would be fun. And, again, it was. That crazy video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp88hztg4F8

I love when his brother Michael says, "That was pretty crazy." Yes. Yes, it was. And I love that they give a shout out to The Dirty Leprechauns. (I'm tagging you all in here!)

So that was April and months and months passed and, again, I'd pretty much forgotten all about the video they'd planned to make ... and then ... bum bum bum! Tonight I got an email announcing the new video was done. Eeeeek!!!!!

Here is the final product: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWOi4SGCJHI

Trippy. So I think that makes me, like, one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon, right? I mean, me watching him watch me ... that's some crazy stuff. I am still tripping out over it.

Thank you Michael and Kevin for putting me in your video, for sharing your music freely and for co-creating art with people around the world. I love that!

I made this video for my friend Leslie who asked about it some time ago. Sorry it took so long girl. I make more videos in winter when there are not so many outdoor distractions! I hope this makes sense. Nothing compares to working with someone one-on-one but this is the next best thing. And hopefully it will help other people also. Weaves are one of the trickier things to describe. Hopefully this will make sense. Let me know either way and perhaps I can improve on it if it doesn't. Happy Hooping.

Studying other people's videos is an amazing learning tool. I do it a lot more in winter when I'm not so busy and guess what? Winter is careening toward us. Soooo I want to start a few threads that are like playlists on YouTube. In each of these threads, I'd like for us to share the videos that have helped or inspired us in various areas of hooping -- practice, performance, tutorials and artful dance. This first one is going to be a list of folk's practice videos that we've found useful in our own practice or videos that highlight things we are currently working on. As you share links you love, please make note of one or two things in the video that you found specifically inspiring so that others perusing the list can, at a glance, go, "Oh! I want to learn more of that." It doesn't have to be a practice video, per se. It could also be someone's hoopdancing in their living room video or even a tutorial if it highlights a move or moves that you really dig.

I'll start us off. I find all of Khan's practice videos very inspiring. I almost can't watch one without having to get up and try something he does. The one I'm loving right now is his latest a capella practice video and there's tons of stuff in it I like but I think my favorite thing is the Behind the Back Wheel Planes. I'd happened on to these moves by accident but never really realized how cool they looked til I saw Khan studying them in his a capella video.

I plan to add more to this thread and to create the others soon, probably later tonight, but I just got invited to meet some friends for a cold beer ... and I'm off. More soon! And I can't wait to learn what you're studying too.

Let's try to share our links like I have below so they can be perused readily. Thanks ya'll!!!

These two short videos are of my friend Leslie. Leslie decided to celebrate her anniversary of five years cancer free by doing something amazing. She climbed to one of the highest peaks in the world ... and hula hooped there. The peak is in Eiger, Switzerland and in these two shorts she is 12,000 feet high. That has to be some kind of record.

In the first one, she had to leap onto this rock formation. Even with two safety ropes, that scares the bejeebus out of me!!! At the end, when she did the lift, she said she suddenly just stopped and thought, "If I lose this hoop, it is gone forever!" and it would have been. Shudder... Check this out. It's beautiful and yet it gives me the heebie-jeebies too!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZBPRsmurKo

In this second one, you can hear the wind whipping around as she holds her ice ax and sports her climbing boots with crampons on them. Still, look at the big smile on her face. I love her. So brave and so beautiful. This woman is one of a kind and I am proud to count her among my friends.
Alley'Oop with Wonderbolt Circus Multiple (4) LED Hoop Act

So I don't post video often, im shy about it, but here goes.

This is a vid of the act I did this summer with the Wonderbolt Circus. It is always an interesting challenge to put all of your tricks in the one show. As well I didnt get to work with my music till the day before the show opened, which was EXTRA challenging but I tried my best to go out there and have fun. The beginning is missing however, in which I do a lot of isolations with mini's. A friend has footage, so hopefully I can post the rest soon.

We will be taking the Wonderbolt Circus Show to perform for a week during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, but thats not till Feb so I have time to work on the act a bit. I think the 1 hoop part needs work...but how do I squish everything in there. Hooping has gotten crazy!!! I love it. Too much to even showcase. That says something about our growing art form does it not? :)

Hi hoopers,

I've been blow away by all the great videos lately, especially the burning man videos...amazing. So, lately I've been enthralled with sustained spinning. The great masters of spin have inspired me, but, I am having a hard time delving into this sacred and beautiful part of our art due to an old (severe) knee injury and recent surgery (that is the 4th one, grrr). The act of spinning puts a lot of strain on the knees. I had to take breaks from the spinning in this video to combat dizziness and knee discomfort. (just showing my age I guess) Spinning FEELS GREAT and I hope to be able to take it further and become much more creative with my movements and spin for longer periods of time. ***Special thanks to Caroleena for the chest roll tutorial. I finally "got it" after your teaching about breathing and relaxing during the roll. (I threw the chest roll in during one of my breaks) I did some sort of tornado/vortex with my arms towards the end...does this move have a name?

Keep hooping and posting inspiring videos!
Kim Ray

I put this little video onto my Facebook page but it got taken down because of the Amy MacDonald soundtrack.

I did mean to replace it today with a creative commons piece of music, but I've been too busy. So here it is on Vimeo.

We have a regular once a month meeting in a building to the side of this area and then afterwards some of the girls bring their fire hoops for us to play with. This was August. The first time I'd tried it.
AND THEN TODAY, i was so blessed to just have a practice that simply clicked. i was on such a hoop high, i could have gone on for hours. my hoop dance felt effortless, and i was overwhelmed with gratitude.
thanks to all, and here's two vids from today's blissful practice:

Woo!

This weekend was my first touring show! We went to Kingston, a really old settlement/former capital, now know for frat boys and prisons. The waterfront was sooooooo pretty, big fountain, lots of boats, beautiful lake with a wind farm on the other side!

I kicked my plateau in the face yesterday by hooping through the sunday sketch! Woo!

Here, I've got some throws and rolls, and lots of isolations and breaks with more focus on moving my body throughout (anti-grounding!) than keeping them stable

some videos I took on/around World Hoop Day in my *new* hoop space in my backyard in Gainesville, FL. It's finally beginning to get cool enough to hoop for longer than 20 minutes in the sunshine!!

This first video is pretty short, contains some sustained spinning and flow practice:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMJagAgHm0A

This next video I am working on playing with isolations and transitions between on and off body moves...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IORSKMfQsEU

Both of these vids were taken sans tripod and thus are a bit wobbly and bouncy at times...my apologies! And criticism is always welcome!!

Happy Hooping!!

It's been a full year of hooping! From back yards to victorian houses, check the progress!!

So... I have been doing a lot of messing around with this ridiculously small children's hoop that some old co-workers picked up for me at a Walmart. It's really small, I'm not sure of the diameter but it doesn't quite make it up to my hip, and I'm only 5'1" so, it's pretty small! I've been working mostly on my jump throughs from various angles and I've been trying to work on flow, like always.
This month (August) is the celebration of my one year hoopiversary so I'm going to post my very first hoop video shot in my backyard sometime in October of last year & my newest one getting down with Led Zeppelin's song I Got A Woman (Hey Hey What Can I Do) in my best friends beautiful old Victorian in Downtown Santa Rosa. I'm so glad that hooping has become a part of my life, I don't know where I would be right now if it weren't for hooping!

Here's my first video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz-tengozJU

And the video from yesterday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubmRJTon9X8

Thanks everyone for sharing your hooping videos with me, you're all truely inspireing and wonderful! Hope to see some of you at SF's World Hoop Day Celebration next week! Hoop there it is!!

IndyHoopers got some great press at this event. Lynn Spencer-Nelson was featured on the front page of the Indianapolis Star and there were also photos of us on www.nuvo.net Thanks to everyone who made this so much fun. I'm working on editing a group video for posting asap.

This is a modern group dance by the Pan-Asian dance troupe Mad Props from the University of Pennsylvania performing a modern dance with Asian influences called, "A Hula Hoop is Round". There are nine dancers and it's a unique performance. I'd love to know the back story, specifically why they chose hoops, if one of them is a hooper, if they made their hoops (which look like aluminum circus hoops to me). I love the music in this also.

Hooping in the rain -- meme to my friend

I made this video about two weeks ago. I had just found out the day before a friend (who worked in my department @ work) had passed away...we're both Tool fans, so the music pick was kinda obvious to me, especially since the lyric "We are eternal, pain is an illusion" really spoke to me at the time. This was also filmed in a light drizzle, right after a big downpour, because he once said real hoopers would hoop in the rain when I was being wimpy about hooping in the rain during lunch break.

So I made this as my way of saying goodbye since I couldn't go to the funeral (it was in another state). A post in the Hooping Music tribe reminded me to share this video here....For once, I wasn't trying to be cool, which is a problem for me...I was just going with the moment.

I discovered this gem, which I call "The Flamingo Pass," while playing with Bay Area Hoopers at Dolores Park yesterday. The way I do the move in this clip is not beautiful, but I hope to smooth it out soon! :) You can see at the end of the clip that I'm just surprised that I could do it!

Enjoy :)

Camp Barefoot was a tiny little festival about 3 hours from my home in Virginia! It was so flippin cute only 2,000 people and it had a great line up! Someone got this footage of me hooping, I'm feeling like these videos weren't exactly the peaks of my hoop dance that weekend but still awesome footage no doubt! The first part is to the Iternals, then I am hooping to Silo-Effect whom you should all check out! They are a killer new band from Richmond Virginia, they are pumping out some really hot grooves let me tell you!

Hi everyone,

This is just a fun video I made close after the last. A friend mentioned hooping in a skirt and that gave me the idea to try a skirt. It covers up the fact that I can't move around yet, it flows very nicely as I hoop, and best of all it covers up my horrid knock-kneed legs! So you can thank Patricia for taking that aweful sight away * GRIN *

I was just going to practice with the skirt and also a move I call "ow steal", ?. The right hand is hooping overhead, the left steals it and puts it on my waist, the right steals it back and hoops overhead, etc. I'm sure it's a move that has a name already, but I have never seen it nor heard of it. I gueeass I'm not doing too bad since most of my new moves are ones that I just happen to think of, but they are real moves.
Anyway, Keith had a cute idea en how to start so we taped it. You can see my guy in the beginnning (well, you can see his actions) and in the end, which didn't work the way I meant it to! But those are Keith's parts and this is the extent of his hooping!

Just an aside, I was having the side effect from my pain patch of stiff and painful muscles and joints, and you can see it in my hand hooping. But it was still fun!

Enjoy and have a laugh on me!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SanDMgk8AKM

(Miss Caroleeena, you wanted to see Keith's hooping progress, well this is it! LOL)

i haven't posted a video in a whiiiile, but i just bought a shnazzy new camera (hopefully i won't lose this one at burning man) so maybe that'll change! here's a video of me hooping at sundae, which is an outdoor house music party which happens every sunday in my neighborhood. i've recently switched to a smaller hoop so i'm getting used to the change in momentum, especially when it comes to barrel rolls and shoulder swoops (as i call them!)

video by lex.
www.youtube.com/watch

also, i can't wait to see some of you at burning man!
i'm definitely planning on stopping by the hoop heaven hoop jam on thursday. i'll be camping at PEX with its funky house and warm philly vibe. come on by for great hooping music every night by artists from philly, LA (camp chillax, formerly soulicious), and around the country! if you see me there hooping, come say hi and i'll get you a drink from our bar. you can find the DJ sets on the Philadelphia Experiment tribe to see who's playing when.
Caroleeena playing with Beat Punctuation to Juevos

First let me give props to this musician. His name is Juevos, which means Eggs, and my friend Eric ran across him making music at a cafe in Guatamala. Eric is taping his music and putting it on YouTube. You can find another great song by him here: http://www.youtube.com/user/estonephoto#play/uploads/9/y4qsysM956I

I am told he has at least one cd out. Once Eric gets back to Guatamala I should be able to get more info on that and him. I really like his music -- music, lyrics and vocals, all of it. It's just a tasty 1940's style -- and as part of my bid to use my practice videos to introduce other hoopers to the music of unsigned or local artists, I dedicate this, my first video with this intention to Juevos. Don't you just love this song!?! Support this artist! I will share more info on him soon.

In this video I am practicing punctuating breaks and beats in the music with punctuation in my dance. I stayed completely off the body, which wasn't really my intention, but I think it works. I did a pretty good job of speeding up when the song speeds up, slowing down when it slows down and landing on the beat (with the exception of the very beginning when I was running from the stereo to the dance space!) I'll probably do another video to this song too. I want to do a fire hoop to it but I couldn't resist sharing this. I hope you like it. And Juevos, you rock!!!! I hope you get to see this one day!

(Also, check out the cicada applause at the end! Pretty cool that.)

Hey all!

I'm back from my trip back home. I had a great time! My mom got married. It was an awesome party! I had fun visiting and performing for relatives and my partner proposed to me under a full moon on the coast one beautiful night. :-)

Opposites and Improvements

Hi Everybody! I am still around and still hooping! It has been hard with the side effects of this pain patch to hoop much and just too hot to go outside. So I have been working inside on my "opposites1'" like hooping in my opposite current (clockwise'), using my left hand for moves, etc. I was even starting to be able to waalk and dance around.
The other day I was able to get outside and was looking forward to letting loose again! But, to my disnay, I still can't walk on the ground outside. But I had a nice long hoop session in the humid furnace of the yard! I, my worst critic, was actually very impressed with myself and how well I can do lifts, drops and halos with my left hand! Thanks to Patricia's help, I have also been working on some new things; Shoulder hooping and one-arm paddling at the waist. Those especially need a lot of work, as does everything else. But I think I have improved a lot. I had more usual drops, getting caught in the hoop, and hitting myself with the hoop bloopers, and as usual I left them in. Hey, they make me laugh so why shouldn't you get to laugh too! It's also a good way for people to see my improvement for me and help me with WHY these things happen. Be sure ! catch the "blind person losing her hoop" part! I laugh about it just thinking about it!!! And it happens to me a lot!

Looking forward to your critiques and tips! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtDuHhS1ZJc#

Much hooper love and light,
Thundershyne

ok kids. For over 4 years, videos tribe has been my daily fix. Thanks to all of you for your inspiration. So today, I'm throwing my 1st video down. Railroad Earth's "The Way of the Buffalo" Hope you enjoy it! Please admire my big orange cat Stuart sitting in the window. He's gotten very bold lately. I know the lighting is a little odd, but whatever. 1st video, right?

Across the Chest Roll Tutorial by Caroleeena

This is a tutorial of the across the chest roll. I've included a few interations, including side to side and front to back as well as the half chest roll. I make some mistakes and my rolls are not as smooth as I'd like but doing it and framing it in my mind and articulating it all at the same time is hard! Do as I say, not as I do. Your hoop should not catch air. If it does, you're not relaxed enough. Breathe. Or you're releasing too early. Hang on to the hoop til it touches your forearm, then gently raise your forearm to propel it across the chest.

In this video I am sporting the hat my friend AliCat gave me. Thank you Ali!!! I love it!
