A little over a year ago was the first time I saw people hooping, when I attended WildFire, the Spinning Arts Retreat in CT. I was so envious, they looked like they were having so much fun. In the fall, I was so excited to take the beginning hooping class so I could jump right in and be like all of my friends. By the end of the first and then the second hour, I was convinced that I was 100% hoop-tarded. I wanted to cry I was so disappointed.

A very wonderful and kind soul, named Laura Marie, the co-owner of Hooping Harmony, refused to let me believe that I was hoop-tarded and took me under her wing. Within 15 minutes, I was able to keep the hoop up, for the most part. It was better than nothing. She suggested that I get the Hoopnotica DVDs, saying they are wonderful for beginners.

Well, I'm very proud to say, I AM NOW A HOOPER!! I made it through the first DVD and I FINALLY GOT CHEST HOOPING!!!!! Thank you, Rayna and Keaton for making such wonderful DVDs. I'm having so much fun and it's helped my confidence so much. So many people say they lose themselves in their hoops and can just let go. I can FINALLY do that, too..

I'm still working very diligently, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next DVDs.

Thank you for the gift of hooping,

I've beaten up the hoop pretty badly so I took my teal gaffers tape (a perfect match!) and went over the soft padding stuff because I got too many holes in it. Now, the hoop feels like it weighs twice as much and is being difficult to work with. Sigh.
What should I do? Carefully take my tape off and deal with the holes? Maybe I'll just patch those up...
The hoop took much of its abuse on my first day and my earring (cartilage) caught on it rrrrrrrrip. I'd advise newbies to remove earrings before hooping!

Right now, I hoop with a 42", 100 psi w/ a 1 inch diameter. It also has 5 colors of vinyl tape on it. Is this a good hoop for me? I am about 5'2, 195 lbs, and my waist is about a 38 (I wear a size 16). I have been eyeing the Travel Hoop and am completely in love and wondering if the specs of that hoop would suit me better.

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!

*Why*: During recent interactions with Los Angeles County and State _Fire
Marshalls <http://www.film.ca.gov/LocationResources/FilmSafety.html>_we have
learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards
and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first
quarter of 2008.

We have the great fortune that our local county Fire Marshalls have
offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

******It is time for us all to come together, as a community - to openly
create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los
Angeles area. This list can be joined by following this link:

http://www.curiousjosh.com/lafire

This list is an opportunity for us to stay in touch as a community, and
discuss a number of pressing issues that are affecting the Los Angeles fire
community such as the upcoming implementation of safety regulations,
standards, and restrictions governing our industry.

The LA Fire mailing list will be a great place to:
discuss issues affecting the fire community
share fire related tips and techniques
communicate about fire events in the LA area
and more

Please spread the word by continuing to forward this to fire performers who
are in Los Angeles, or who visit Los Angeles and perform with fire. If we
fail in this initiative then viewpoints such as "Poi is the most dangerous
tool in your arsenal" or the potential banning of poi spinning in the
direction of the audience may become a reality.

Troupes & Tool Manufacturers that have involvement in this initiative have
included: CuriousJosh, Fire Drums, Fire Groove, Los Angeles Fire Effects (LAFX),
Machina
Candeo, Mutaytor, Phoenix Projekt, Pyrophernalia / Om Fire, Sirena
Serpentina, Trick Concepts, & Volcano Flux.

*_Directions:
_*
SmashLabs
1714 Albion Street (entrance is here - big red door with cut metal numbers -
push down on the lever to enter)
The "back" door is a big roll door in the last parking lot on the North side
of Main just before the train tracks - look for the La Mano Press sign. If
it's full, there is an empty lot directly across the street on the South
side of Main Street, or feel free to park on Main or Albion and come in the
front. *main thing to remember is if you've gone over the tracks, you've
passed Albion which is a TINY street and easy to miss.

*GoogleMaps:

*
1714 Albion St,
Los Angeles, CA 90031 - it's the triangular space that starts on Main and
back up on Albion

Anyways, I was wondering if someone could expand on the statement, "They also can't handle intense or high velocity hooping (they get very dizzy...), so only use them with the beginning level instructional DVDs. Once you start doing more advanced hooping, contact us for an appropriate hoop. Happy Hooping!!"

I don't have the dvd's so I'm not sure what level I'm at according to them, but I've been hooping for about 4 months. I would place myself at maybe an intermediate level. What happens to the travel hoops with "more advance hooping"?

I'm used to seeing hoopers at Burning Man and other festivals from people who are for garnering creativity, expression and art... now I see a TON of companies taking hooping out there and selling it as a fitness regime.

Markie B here. I'm a Bay area physician and a life-long hooper as well and I'd like to share something special that I'm up to.

A couple times last year, I volunteered my time in a Guatemalan town called Santiago Atitlan. In this town of Indigenous Tzutujil, there are a small handful of kids with cleft palates. Without repair, these kids will die an early death. Since they have no means of getting fixed, I've come up with a plan to give them each a full life with just a scar.

This project is all about saving lives, celebration and connection. Everyone can participate. All you need is a hoola hoop and at least one sponsor. You'll gather with your friends, new and old, on a special day in May and hoop it up for as long as you can. The more you hoop, the more you raise for the kids AND the more fun you have. Your sponsors will commit to a minimum of a $5 donation just for showing up. For each minute you hoop over five minutes, your sponsors will donate $1. Since some of you can hoola for days, we're gonna cap it at an hour. That means $60. If your sponsors want to donate more, they're welcome to do so.

So if you're down for some fun and more importantly, to save some lives, gimme a response hear and start thinking about your sponsors.

Flyers and donation forms to come.

We're all about celebration, miracles and connection here.

so funny you mentioned "yes, i am taking this on your plane"!!!

i just had a trip with 7 (yes, 7) flights and on all of them, i took my hoop. i even carried it as a third piece! don't know if everyone can get away with that, but maybe it helped that because you now have to be at the gate so ridiculously early, i actually busted it out right there in the airport. who's gonna argue with that?

thanks rayna, for my fabulous collapsible hoop!
