I am launching a burning art installation for Burning Man 2006. I hope you will join me in this exciting project.

Every pregnancy involves a woman’s greatest hopes and fears, and 20% of all first pregnancies in the US are lost pre-birth. This happened to me six years ago.

No one knew why, and unlike most countries, we have no rituals here to process that grief. On Friday night 9/1 when our community art project burns, everyone on the playa will process and release this loss in a ritualistic catharsis for every parent that has ever lost a child.

Please join me in creating an all-natural playa installation that will bring tears and cheers to so many in our midst that need closure. With LLC interest in a grant proposal, I would like to form the core team before proposal submission, expected to be around Feb 1.

The installation will consist of an 18’ tall pregnant woman wearing a white maternity dress, flanked by two pagodas signifying a child’s nursery (hope) and a doctor’s waiting room (fear). The uniquely designed pagodas will contain simple Playatech furniture allowing participants to write messages on wooden doll cut-outs and leave them for the burn. Most of the project will be whitewashed for purity. Our goal is to use all-natural materials and fastening methods except for the burn platform, tie-downs, and lighting.

The art will be fully assembled and tested pre-playa, and designed for rapid deployment pre-event. On Thursday of the event, the woman’s mask of happy hope will be removed to reveal a face of anguish, and blood-red paint will be spilled on her dress to signify a miscarriage. On Friday, she will be laid down on a delivery table, and cords of firewood will be added beneath it. Following solemn ceremonial pageantry, pyrotechnics will explode from her womb without warning and consume the installation, releasing the sorrows and fears of all parents to the heavens.

Implementation should be straightforward compared to the Pagoda or Project X which had ambiguity and huge engineering challenges. For this project to be a success, I need the support of this amazing community that I wish I had already been surrounded by when I couldn’t stop crying 6 years ago. A draft grant proposal, schedule, and budget have been created and are available on the project’s yahoo group, or email me for them.

So far, Sunshine, HeidiWD, Ember (LB), Blayssa and Rhadiente want to participate in various ways, and several more of you have indicated interest. We need help now with 2-D or 3-D rendering, a physical model, a web page, and we’d like to identify key leads such as On-Site Build Manager, Burn Designer, Safety Manager, MOOP Czar, Structural Lead, Class 3 Pyro Wizard, Pageantry Director, Lighting, Electrical, Finance, Web, and PR. In spring and summer, we will need woodworkers, seamstresses and painters to construct the piece at Club Z. We will also need on-playa crews pre-event and pre-/post-burn crews Friday 9/1, and Saturday 9/2. Of course we simply must have a test burn at the beach sometime in the summer!

To participate at whatever level you’d like, please email me at glimmerkz@yahoo.com, join the yahoo group at hopeandfear-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or just show up tomorrow at Club Z before 3PM!

Some people think participating in large-scale interactive playa art is the key to deeply experiencing everything important about Burning Man, from the 10 Principles to the love in our amazing community to the playa’s transformational magic. This year, I hope you’ll join me in exploring the truths of that.

With hugs, excitement and of course hope and fear !-),
