Hello Photographer Friends,

After 2 years of incidents, issues and difficulties, show after show after show, it is with sincere regret that we are announcing a restriction on all professional-sized camera rigs, camera-flashes and video-equipment at all Hubba Hubba-produced shows and events. Going forward, security will be communicating this at the door, and any unauthorized persons using such equipment at our shows will be asked (nicely) to put it away.

We will retain our own 3 official photographers (who are part of our organization, and have been with us since the beginning) and we may occasionally issue photo passes to guest photographers (perhaps 1 per show) with whom we have a good, long-standing relationship, but otherwise, professional-sized photography & video equipment will not be allowed.

We understand that not every photographer is responsible for every issue, but we have had complaints and problems at literally every show we've ever done, and no matter what we say or do, this continues to be the case.

These complaints have come from performers, audience members and even the venues themselves, and frankly we can no longer afford the time and effort to manage this apparently inevitable situation.

Even when we have spoken directly to these issues, our requests for good conduct have regularly been ignored, and photographers have continued to make the show experience a negative one for the audience and the cast. On more than one occasion we've even had to throw non-show photographers out of the _dressing room_ --even _after_ they'd been told directly that they were not allowed in that area.

Lastly, despite literally thousands of photos snapped at every show we've ever done; despite telling photographers that they were allowed to shoot at our events only so long as we were given copies of their material, we've maybe received, at most, a couple of dozen photos --_total_-- over the past 2 years. Clearly the only thing we are getting from this relationship is grief.

Please understand that this decsion was not made suddenly, nor was it made lightly, We've had this discussion over and over again for months, and finally we felt we had exhausted every other possible solution. For now, at least, this is how we are going to handle this situation.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yours,

  • "despite telling photographers that they were allowed to shoot at our events only so long as we were given copies of their material,"

Perhaps it's because I never actually asked, but I never knew that this was the case.

Does this mean that the point-and-shoot sized digital camera I've been using will be ok?
    • Yep... as I said (at least twice) in the posting, this applies only to professional-sized camera rigs, video cameras and flash-units.

If you weren't approached about sharing photos that's probably because you weren't using a rig like those mentioned above. In particular, however, the people who were most at fault in regards non-photo-sharing were those two or three dozen over the last two years who asked permission to shoot at our shows, accepted the conditions (among them, "share your photos with us" --but also "stay off the stage/stairs," "don't block or push the audience," "don't blind people with your flash," "do not attempt to sneak into the dressing room after the 3rd person has told you *NO*..." ) and who never, ever, not-once, _ever_ lived up to them.

Sorry to sound so grouchy... This has just been a huge headache, and it's been no fun at all dealing with jerkface photographers on one hand, and fielding all the complaints related to them (by audience, performers and venues) on the other. (Complaints, mind you, that these otherwise anonymous photographers never even have to _hear_, let alone deal with... That falls on _my_ head.)

I should mention, by the way, that since I posted this notice on Myspace and here, I've received one really nice, diplomatic reply from a genuinely concerned photographer (I remember him from the last show --very nice guy) and a veritable _flood_ of "AMEN!" and "THANK GOD SOMEBODY'S SAYING SOMETHING!!" letters from burlesque shows and burlesque performers from all over the place! (by no means just Hubba Hubba folk... )

Big-rig/pro photographers may want to take note... Whether or not it's the fault of every one of you (and obviously it's _not_... ) there's a very general but very _substantial_ feeling of resentment out there, and performers and shows far removed from Hubba are expressing it. It may be time to evaluate what caused this impression, and even to start considering some responsibility for police'ing the other photographers around you. Whether or not you're personally at fault, the jerk-majority among you are setting the precedent, not the other way around.
