Taking hoops on a plane

Hi Folks,

I know there've been loads of threads on the Hula Hooping tribe about taking hoops on aircraft, but they relate to travelling in and from the States/Transatlantic.

Has anyone ever taken a hoop on a budget airline in Europe? In particular, I'm hoping to take my PSI with me. My Inifinity will fit into my travel bag so not a problem, but my PSI doens't coil down that small, so it'll have to be carry on baggage. The restrictions on number of items you can take on board have been lifted from Manchester, so I don't have to choose between my hoop & my hand luggage, but I wonder if I'll have any problems either with them allowing me to take it on board and getting it through security.

Any help much appreciated.

The best thing for you to do is to ring up your airline and ask them. Different companies have different policies, also you will find that they way they enforce the policies varies from one place to another.

I've spoken with BMIBaby this morning and they said as long as it's within the stipulated size restrictions, it will be fine. I need to measure it when I get home, but I think it'll be small enough. Just remains to be seen how I get on at the airport tomorrow...

I'll let you know when I get to the other end!

Hmm, was kidding myself with the size, it's way taller and wider, unless you don't count the space in the middle ;0)

It may have to stay at home... :0(

    Hey there,

I recently took a 41 inch Hoop on a plane to Goa in India with Thomson airline. I called them up before I flew with them and asked them how much it cost to take an extra piece of luggage. They charged by weight and so when sandwiched in between 2 pieces of cardboard. it was still only light. I told them the dimensions and paid about £10 or 15 extra and still kept all of my luggage allowance elsewhere.

It's obviously gonna be different with each airline, but don't forget people take surf boards ect.. all over the world. Most airlines will accommodate anyone to make an extra penny.

Definitely don't leave it at home, I normally buy a couple of new ones for a specific trip and leave them with special people at the end to spread a little bit of the hula love xx

Thanks Charlene, but leaving my PSI Hoop at this end is not an option as it was Waaaaay too expensive, and I can manage with an ordinary travel hoop, so have left ithe PSI at home....:0(

            According to Jet2.com anyway!!
I had a little debacle at Blackpool airport today and had a little hoop related strop.
I was flyin home to Northern Ireland and hadn't checked a bag in and I tried to take my infinity on as carry on baggage.
(This is partially my fault I hadn't actually called them but i had checked several threads including this and checked their website and I really didn't think there would be a problem with taking my nice coiled up hoop onto the plane!!)
They really didn't like my hoop they said first i couldn't have 2 bags so i put one in the other which was ok then they just said i couldn't take the hoop on board but i could put it in the hold but it would be £25. First they couldn't give me a reason they just said it was the rules of all airports everywhere which I protested. This went on for a while then a security man came and said I couldn't take it on board because it was a restrictive device and i could put it round someone and capture them (no really) OR i could break it apart and injure someone with the plastic I was getting pretty upset at this point cause I had about 20 minutes before my flight and I didn't want to pay and I was going home because my grandma is sick and was a bit stressed and wanted my hoop. I also couldn't check it in cos when i come back i have 2 hours to get from the airport to my new hoop class and i can't wait for checked luggage.
They wouldn't shift so I had to run with my bag and my hoop all the way to the long stay car park throw it into the car and run back. Much sweating and I had practically developed tourettes at this point.
BUT in the car I found some lovely connectors that Diana at hoopswhirled sent me so i threw them in and made my mum go to B and Q on the way home from the airport so I am going to make some hoops for me amd my mum and aunts and we will all live happily ever after and the people from Jet2 will have to work in Blackpool airport for the rest of their lives and that will be their punishment
            THE END
The moral is pack your hoop in your bag or be more organised and check beforehand xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

How ridiculous. "Job's worth" that's the real problem. No one capable of making a sensible decision, only follow rules like sheep.

What a state we've reached. But as you said, they will be working there for years and that may well be enough to kill all our brain cells put together.

              Hope your Grandma improves.

Hope your Grandma feels better soon. My hoops all went in my hold baggage, so I had no probs, but the Infinity really isn't that big - it would have easily fitted in the overhead locker.

And as for it being a restrictive device - I could do a better job with the straps on my hand bag! And injuring people? What about high heeled shoes? Good grief. Yep, Sue said it "Jobs Worth"

                How ridiculous!

                Take care Hun, xxx

Thanks guys she's doing ok now I think she likes to have a little wobble now and then to drag me home.
And I have made 3 big hoops for aunts and 4 little ones for nieces and nephews turns out my Dad is a champion hoop maker very handy with a hacksaw and very strong for pushing in connectors and advising.
TOP TIP put a little Fairy liquid on the connector end you are pushing in it helps it slide and dries sticky so holds well too and when you do the other end if you haven't lined it up quite right you can spin it at little to straighten it. Courtesy of my Dad!
Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

                    Tape is dangerous too

                    Tue, June 10, 2008 - 12:41 AM
On the flight home they confiscated a full roll of camoflauge tape a roll of progaff a roll of purple vinyl and the best one half a roll of metallic green mirror tape in airport security!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I must really look like I am into restraint I wouldn't mind but they let me take them one way!!
Plus they must underestimate their staff who is going to stand still long enough for me to peel the backing paper of the mettallic stuff and bind them up with it plus it takes me ages to get the angles right!!!
I have now learned my lesson and will check my bag in next time!!!

Cracked up laughing ;-) Just had images going through my head of stressed out hoopers trying to tape air stewards up with mirror or glitter tape and getting tangled up with the backing!!! You've just made my day xxxxxxxxxx Ps Ifwe have a group of hoopers, what are we called.......a gaggle? Flock? Bunch of nutters haha x

Oh Gail! I'm flabbergasted! They confiscated your tape!!!! That's enough to cite violence. What on earth do they think they are doing? I don't know about you, but this really scares me. These people don't behave the way I would like to think those responsible for some of my security should behave. Can you get the tape back?
