making hoops

I finally want to get round to making some of my own hoops. I've found that it's not as easy to find the tubing as I thought.
Where does everyone in the UK get their tubing and connectors from?

I prefer the smaller and lighter stuff, that's about 3/4 inches thick and slightly flexible.

I get my tubing from Screwfix; they do 25mm and 20mm in 50m rolls: www.screwfix.com/search.do...CSTHZOSFFQ I've found them to be cheapest and most reliable, plus they make a percentage donation to my chosen charity if I go through www.easyfundraising.org.uk/

Everything else (tape, connectors etc) I get from our very own Sue: www.fancy-tapes.co.uk/

      Thanks for the plug!

Do Screwfix sell the 20mm tubing now? They used to seem only to sell the 25mm when I started looking. I've got into the habit of getting my tubing from Plumb Centre because it's never squashed and the lads in there are cute and love the idea that I make hula hoops with it!

Yep, they've got the 20mm in quite recently, and even better, they deliver to the door. Funny thing is though, if I'm not in, they leave it with next door and the poor neighbours wonder what on earth I'm doing buying great lengths of industrial pipe!

I never find it's squashed from them either.

This is exactly how I make mine kitty.
20mm tubing from screwfix and 3/4" connectors and 'fancy tapes' from Sue are all I have tried so far. I also brought a ratchet tube cutter from B&Q makes cutting the tubing so easy. Just wish there was an easier way of pushing in the connectors without having to wear marigolds to stop my hands burning!
50m of tube makes alot of hoops for one person so I'm going to start finding them some nice owners!

Sue is the only place to go for connectors and tape. Before Sue, getting supplies was less than easy. She's a Star (shame there wasn't a Hoopie award for Best Supplies!)

I'd never thought of wearing rubber gloves whilst connecting. Good idea! But yes, they are difficult to get in, but they're never gonna shift once their in! I used to use off cuts of pipe for mine, which was unreliable and I have had a couple hoops come apart this way. :( But connectors work a treat.

I have a small bench vice which is great for clamping one end of the hoop while your pushing the connectors in it was only a tenner definitely worth it xx

            I got a 25m roll of 20mm from Wickes, I think.

I had a look at the Wickes website cause i thought it might be easier to get a 25m roll, but it seems that it is basically the same price as getting 50m from screwfix! I'm sure it'll all get used up at some point anyway :-)

I think maybe the 3/4" connectors you use with the 25mm pipe...
I make hoops with both 25mm pipe and 20mm pipe, im sure its 3/4" connectors im using with 25mm pipe at the moment. I think the difference is becuase one is based on external diameter measurement and the other on internel diameter measurement, i cannot remember which way around it is!
Hopefully someone else on here can confirm or deny my thoughts x

Yep, you're spot on Hannah - I just measured my connectors and the ones for the 25mm tubing are 3/4", the ones for the 20mm tubing are 1/2".

            Hi Vicky

The other beat me to it, I've not been here for a few days. Yes, if you want to make hoops out of 20mm pipe you need 1/2" connectors. Sounds like you have the 3/4" connectors which should be used with 25mm pipe. It does say on the product description on the web site, but it can be confusing.

Boiling water is the best way. You need to really soften the tubing and not burn it or simply warm the outside. I hold each end in the pan for 1 minute and then dry it with a cloth and get the connector in asap to make sure it doesn't start to cool too much.

I get my tubing (25mm and 20mm) from the Plumb Centre. I ended up getting it at 30p per metre. It worked out around £8 for a 25m coil. Its the cheapest I have seen it so far. Then I buy my connectors and pretty tapes from www.fancy-tapes.co.uk and some electrical tapes for only 80p each from the Electrical Centre (Same company as the Plumb Centre) too.

The connectors at Fancy Tapes are really good quality ones. Before when I bought hoops online after a while the hoop would come apart from the connector but the ones Sue has haven't done that.
