Any workshops in the South West b4 May?

Hello Happy Hoopers!!

After a long stint of hanging up my hoop very quickly after first picking it up - I feel I have been re-born!!

I got so frustrated that I couldn't do it - I resigned myself to being utterly useless and that I would never be a hooper.. I was totally gutted!!

BUT!!! I picked it up again 3 weeks ago and am "feeling the hoop" a lot better this time, and am getting to grips with the force of the hoop which I never got before! I am still a total klutz but have worked out some moves now - no grace yet though and am in dire need of some peronal help - not just DVD's which is all I have - and no one to turn to! :(

I was wondering if there were any one day workshops happening before May - does anyone know of any?
Also - with the Hoopgirl level 1 training - is this just for teaching or is this to enable people to learn to hoop?

Lastly - one question.. as soon as I start to move my arms or try to do any sort of dancing leg moves - my hoop drops! Arghhh! What am I doing wrong? My torso is still and my pelvis tucked in - but I look like a demented chicken all the time and then have to go into "hysterical hooping in a very stiff static back & forth move - with a pained expression" to get the hoop to come back up to my waist!! Any guidance on this would be very much appreciated!!

Lots of love to you all - Sarah xxx

    Hello Sarah!

Well done for perserving with the hoop! Sometimes a little break from it and our expectations of how quickly we need to be progressing actually does some good! I notice after any break from hooping (mainly when I'm poorly so quite infrequently) that when I pick it up again I notice an improvement rather than having to re-learn! It's like my body has chilled out and relaxed enough for me to let go of any expectation of frustration I may feel.

My advice for you is simple in essence, relax, trust yourself and the knowledge you already have, perhaps close your eyes and connect more with your music, let your music dictate the way your arms move, trust your waist and your hoops, they know what to do to keep that hoop up! As your muscles and core strengthen you will find keeping the hoop up becomes easier! In some ways it's letting go of what you know and trusting it instead! If the hoop goes to the floor then so what? It don't matter none! Just pick up your hoop, (dropped hoops means your learning anyway so rejoice when it falls) and carry on, notice what is happening when it does work and build a language with you and your hoop (much in the same way you are doing!)

I live in Milton Keynes, so maybe I'm too far but I'm doing some FREE 2 hour hoop dance sessions but they are during May, outside of the time you specify but something to keep in mind if you feel you want to come! There will be lots of opportunities to explore your hooping. If not then perhaps you can let me know where exactly you are and I'm sure there is a hoop dance teacher nearby who can support you!

I'm sure HoopGirl training will accommodate you if you don't want to teach, perhaps send HoopGirl an email, she's responded to a few of my rookie questions over the last year so I'm sure she'll be able to advise you! I'm also doing the trainings this year (I did Body Hoops last year and had the most amazing time so hoping for something similar with HoopGirl and her approach) Maybe I might see you there?

You'll get lots of support from people so I rejoice in you re-kindling your relationship with your hoop! If I can help any further then let me know otherwise I'm sure others will respond and help you on your journey!

    Happy Hooping Sarah!

    :o)

Ah thank you for such a long and lovely reply!! :) x

I wish my waist really did know it was doing to keep the hoop up! Sometimes it feels like I do and other times it's like I'm starting from day one again! Weird!! I find it really hard at the moment to relax while hooping, I am very tense!! I am going to try closing my eyes more and try to teach myself to feel the connnection with the hoop on me without looking in the mirror and judging how bad my movements are! It doesn't bother me that I drop the hoop as I do understand that it's all going to take time, but what does frustrate me is the fact that to keep it on my waist I have to remain static!! I want to feel freedom with my hoop and as I'm from a dancing background it is second nature to want to move with it!!! I guess more patience & a stronger core is required! Thank you for your advice!

I am a little too far from Milton Keynes (Salisbury - Wiltshire), so would not be able to makey your classes easily - thank you for letting me know about them though - there is very little (in fact nothing) around my neck of the woods so I am looking to teach eventually but am no where near good enough to even take the teacher training yet.. big gap for me - progressing from grasping the basics to getting good! I think it's so important and helpful to have someone to be by your side actually showing you what to do and pointing out your mistakes, plus it gives you more encouragement & confidence - sometimes finding the confidence & to keep going with it on your own can be tough! Someone in the area has just started a hula fit class but I can't make it as it's during the day and it's not really dance, it's more keep fit with the hoop.

The DVD's I have are great but working to a screen (and the opposite way round!!) when you are just beginning is a very hard thing to do as you have to be super diligent and keep on keeping on - but I have the desire and drive and am determined so I will persevere with it in the hope that I might find some one-to-one pro help asap!!

Thank you again for all your help!

      Sarah :) xxxx

        Hi Sarah,

Long time no hear! I was wondering what had happened to you just the other day as you were the only one anywhere near me for a long time! Anyway - I ahve some suggestions.

I wonder if you might be able to make your way to Basingstoke - Bee Varga (one of the new and very talented hoop dancers) offers classes there. I know she holds both evening and daytime classes so check her out and see how you get on. Bee's info can be found here: dshoops.co.uk/default.aspx Bee is an amazing and passionate dancer and teacher.

Also I am thinking of holding a hoop disco in Southsea in the coming months so keep an eye out for that . I have been teaching hooping as exercise classes but we do a lot of moving around and each week the class gets better and better at freeing themselves up from that static spot. My info can be found here www.happyhulamonkeys.com/ - I teach the class for aerobic fitness but I sneak in lots of little surprises so they don't realise they are learning dance related moves...

If you can get along to one of Janines classes - (why not even just one class for a day trip to treat yourself?) then I know you would benefit from it. Janine is a fabulously emotive soul who will encourage you to release yourself from the restrictions you are struggling with.

I did keep trying to get hold of Jessica (do you remmeber that?) but still heard nothing back and since then I have obviously moved on to trying different things and building my own hoop community!

Keep practicing - just little steps at first. Bring one step forward and back (same side repeatedly until you are comfortable and then try the other side), try shuffling, strides and even try running as sometimes that actually works better for some people!

        I hope you're well.
        Sal.x

          Hi Sal!!

I'm all good thank you - if not a tad frustrated with ma hoop!! I WILL master it though - I'm on a mission now! How are you? I hope you are well!

Thank you for all the info - fantastic that you're doing so well (and so quickly it seems!!) - I'm really pleased for you!! I can easily travel to Basingstoke so I will check that out ! Yay!!! Somewhere to go hopefully!!! My local gym have been very kind and taken my flyers for my hoops and have said that I can go and use the studio to practice in on a Sat afternoon so tomorrow will be my first "session" where I will have ample space to fling both myself and the hoop around (and hopefully not smash their mirrors!!!).

I would love to attend your hoop disco but feel that I'm no where near good enough for that yet! I am thinking of going to the hoop gathering too though! I emailed Gems and she said it was for all levels so maybe I could go there and feel inspired and not too rubbish!!?

I made contact with Jessica the other week as I needed help to learn and she has moved to Brighton now. She kindly offered one-to-one (she doesn't hold classes anymore) but it would have meant her travelling on the train from Brighton to Bournemouth each Saturday to teach me and I couldn't ask her to to commit to that - how sweet of her to offer to do that though?!

This week I have practised every night for 1-1.5 hours and although last night I had an anger fit (oh dear!), I do feel that some moves are "feeling" a lot clearer and I am starting to notice where I think I am going wrong. (I think!). I just wish I could dance with my hoop more easily because I know that as soon as I can I will relax and open up to it a whole lot more!

Thank you so much for your encouragement! Love n hugs xxxx

          Hello Sue!!

Thank you too for your kind words and advice! I do always hoop to music (my partner is a dj & he plays soulful & US house music (ace!!) so I am lucky to have loads of loud music around me constantly - plus 15,000 - yes 15,000 vinyl records to choose from!!!).

I will hopefully be in touch soon with a big tape order (sazzypopz) as the hoop class at the gym will see my flyers for the 1st time today so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a few orders!! LOVE making them!!

I fully agree that I need to stop concentrating so hard but at the moment it feels like a catch 22 for me, if I don't concentrate on the moves (i.e. corkscrew) I can't keep a flow going! I have tried to just go with it, but end up in a heap on the floor or with the hoop wrapped round my neck or my arm stuck in a position that I can't get it out of without whacking the back of my head with my hoop! I don't care about injuries though! I JUST WANT TO MASTER IT!!!! (said with a smile!)

I am not as patient as I need to be with hooping - I'm one of these people that if I am really into something I need to master it quickly and I've found it quite difficult to accept that this is actually going to take time!! I am also really keen to get good enough to be able to attend a teacher training session - this is my goal!

I look at hours of youtubes of people hooping and they make it look so easy, graceful and beautiful.. then as soon as I start (always with a positive mind) I look like suck a klutz that I find myself thinking a lot "god, I'm never gonna get this".. which I know is the wrong thing to think, but it's so hard to convince myself otherwise when I look so dreadful!!! Last night my hoop got slammed to the floor a couple of times in frustration - not good!

I have no choice but to hoop in the mirror as the only place I can hoop is my front room (massive advantage from 6 months ago when I had to go to a park as the flat I was living in was so small), but the mirror is properly attached to the wall so I can't take it down (and it's big unfortunately).

Last night I tried facing the other wall and closing my eyes more but felt the need to keep turning back and looking in the mirror to see what my movements looked like. I am trying to run before I can walk I know that - but I need to keep myself inspired by trying harder moves or I'm worried I'll get fed up with just waist hooping which really is the main thing that I feel comfortable with at the moment (but even that not fully though as I still have to pyut in a lot of movement to keep the hoop up).. how do you all make this look so effortless, when I try and limit my movements or move with it the hoop just falls to the floor!? Arghhh!

On a more positive note...! I did manage to suss out floating last night (I know this is an easy one to all of you but to me at the moment it was.. Yeeha!!) and I also held the hoop on my hips for about 4-5 minuts (again YAY!!! 1st time I've done that for longer than 10 seconds!!) so I felt a little more of a "breakthrough"!

I am so keen to get good at hooping that I have asigned myself to daily practice and I am actually loving it!! It beats the boring gym by a mile and already (just this week) I can feel a difference in my tummy! I have noticed that my lower and upper back is weak and this is an area that I need to get strength in before I even think about trying chest hooping! This afternoon I am finishing work at 3pm so can go home and have a good session I hope - with no one around except me and my hoop!

You are all so kind & helpful on here & I'm really grateful to you for the time & effort you have taken in replying to my "cry of help!"

          Thank you so so much!!

          Love Sarah xxx

    Hi Sarah

I have a question for you. Do you practice with dance music on? If not, start.

It sounds to me as if you are concentrating far too hard. What you actually need is to loose some of that concentration. That happens naturally in a class where you have interaction with others and lots of laughter, but on your own it can be harder. So I suggest some music you really like with a good beat and hoop but concentrate on the music, sing along etc. The beat will infuse your legs and body and you will react differently to the hoop. And at first, don't go anywhere near a mirror! Who cares what you look like when you are learning.

I would suggest that HoopGirl training isn't what you are looking for. It is very specifically to train teachers how to teach HoopGirl classes. It requires a certain level of hoop skills to keep up. I did Level 1 and 2 last year and although I did not intend to teach classes and didn't sign on for the paid accreditation, I got a lot out of the courses for personal development, but that wasn't hooping skills development, I was quite well practiced before I went.

You sound like you need to find a class to attend, so try Bee as Sally suggests, and get to some of the weekend events. It's worth it. I travel from Northamptonshire to North London from time to time for Diana Defries hoop club and there are other London clubs on here and Facebook. Janine's MK disco was great fun so I have no doubt that her classes would be wonderful, and my own inaugural hoop club in Leamington Spa went off really well with Gail coming from Cumbria! A bit of travel might make all the difference for you.

Keep going. Mastering that ring of plastic is a great feeling.

      Hi Sarah,

glad you are going to check out Bee's classes. I know you will love her and it will help you along your way no end! I have been hoping to join Bee's classes a little later in her course although it is quite a long way (I have just bought a sat nav so at least I should get there without too much trouble!) - I still have a long way to go but I just enjoy it and at the moment I am happy with that. I am certainly not a super fly hooper nor can I master many of the intermediate moves but personal practice has takena step back while I set up my classes.

The hoop disco is not just aimed at hoop pros so don't panic about that! There will be moves you can do that lots of others can't. I was arranging it for my firness class and we hoop aerobically so they don't do lifts but they can do halo, waist, silly step routines, warrior and so on. I try to show them transition moves to get them from one part of the body to the other but as they come for exercise I think they would get put off if I started teaching them lift ups and they don't practice in between so it would take an age! There are a few that are keen to meet up on the weekend and I think those are the ones I can convert to hoop dancers! hehe! Evil plan!

So anyway - I will tell you when the hoop disco (when I arrange it!)is and we would love to see you. It would just be a chance to mess around and maybe the 2 of us could share some tips?

YES COME TO HOOP GATHERING! I asked before and Gems did say there would be something for more beginner levels and I think the whole thing is just an exciting opportunity to see other hoopers perform and enjoy the space and learn new things! Let me know if you decide to go - I have booked my tickets and I'm going with another hooper (Pretty hoop Tracey) who is lovely so you already have some smiley faces to meet you!

I'm sure you will get lots of hoop orders and be running dance classes yourself soon enough. Plus maybe you can hoop at your boyfriends sets?

Same about Jessica but helpful to know that she could do one to one. Perhaps put it on your list of hoop outings...

Take care and well done on all your practice - with that motivation and passion you will be whirling up a storm in no time!

By the way - I agree with Sue about the mirror - you could try filming yourself though as then you might see that actually you are better than you felt you were or you might be able to spot what you are doing wrong?

        Hey!

Oh how I wish I could offer you some tips!! I think you would be fully sharing your hooping skills with me if we met up! I will keep my eyes peeled for the disco info - thank you! It sounds like a lotta fun!

I have sent Bee and email so will wait to see what is available to me... fingers crossed I can make a class! Thanks for that Sal!!

I love your website!! Great stuff! You hoop beautifully too!

Ah bless you re: Hoop Gathering! I just need to weigh up money and as soon as I have I'll be on the case for a ticket - I really would like to go! It would be great to meet up with you there! Am thinking I would do the dorm style ticket as even though i have a tent - I have never pitched it and also don't fancy sleeping in it on my own!! Scaredy cat!!

I would love to hoop at my boyfirends sets too - great way to practice a performance - but I think that's a long way off yet!!

I wish you all the luck in the world with your classes and everything else you've got going on - I'm sure you're gonna be a real success!

Speak to you soon! Take Care!

        Sarah xxx

P.S. I did a few isolations last night too.. not perfect but think I have grasped the move.. ever so excited about that!!!
