Hooping? What Hooping? You tell me

OK, so I'm sad that this tribe is soooo quiet. Let's start it off again. Let's chat. In my opinion Facebook is getting worse and worse for meaningful communications, so let's remember how good Tribe is when it's up, which is more often than not these days. They deserve another chance.

What hoopy things are you all doing this weekend? Anything? Nothing? Going somewhere? Staying home?

Spill the beans and report back at the end, preferably with photos to prove it!

I've been feeling decidedly under the weather this week, so I've not had the energy to hoop. I'm hoping that Sunday could be the day I get to play. Lets cross everything for some dry weather to play in.

Oh, and who is definitely going to the first UK Hoop Gathering? I want to know who I have to be really jealous of.

I can't afford the hoop gathering prices. So I won't be there.

But if the weather is nice you could spend the weekend hooping on the beach.

I'll be in rehearsals, in a windowless building not knowing if it's day or night. But I shall attempt to hoop sometime anyhow. I envy you the access you have to the beach.

Thanks for this Sue - I've been trying to find 5 minutes to kick off a meaningful discussion of some sort.

          Where I'm up to:

I will definitely be at Hoop Gathering (possibly even with bells on!), and will miss you not being there with us lots

Before that I will be at Hoopgirl Training in Nuneaton for Level 3 - and hoping to drop in on the days off between L1+2 to play with the gathered hoopers.

Before that I will be at your lovely Hoop Club on 4 April

And best of all, I've finally got a room sorted and will be starting full on proper hoop classes! Hoorah!

I would love to go to the Hoop Gathering, but I just don't think I'll be able to afford it this year :(

I've finally been able to take my hoop practice outdoors today... it wasn't particularly warm and it was quite windy, but it was great nonetheless!

I'm doing Hoopgirl Level 1 in Nuneaton, so I'll see you in April, Kitty!

Can't wait for hoop gathering - prices much less than I thought, considering the price of Hoopgirl (gaah!) & other events I've been to! Most weekend dance events I go to are at least £200-300, so £124 for food, tuition, etc. was a nice surprise! So nice being able to hoop outside again, innit? Come on summer.....
Can't make the next Leamington hoopclub - will be shaking my bottom (as my beloved calls it) at a bellydance weekend. Bother.

Having been outside today and picked up one of my big hoops (because I had a chunky sweatshirt on as I was supposed to be doing some jobs!) I realised after just one track, how much more exercise you get with a big hoop! My legs were aching fast as I pumped it to a Prince track. All winter I've been using smaller, lighter hoops indoors. Little wonder the winter fat crept back on.

Roll on more outside practice with a variety of hoop sizes.

I'm doing HoopGirl Level 3, so Kitty, please keep me informed of any earlier "between courses" days you intend to go down to. I'll join you if I can.

Today felt like the real first day of spring. Birds everywhere (including the rooks who insist every year on trying to fill one of my chimneys up with sticks, despite the nets!!!) and windows open. Daffs are out too. Lovely.

      Hey, hey, hey,

I must admit that I've more or less defected to FB now (groan!). But every so often I browse Tribe - and every so often I come to a thread where I feel compelled to type.

First off, I too have been fortunate enough to afford Hoop Girl training - even if it is only L.1.
I will be travelling down on the Weds, just to familiarise myself with Nuneaton and prepare myself for the work ahead! ;o) Anyone planning on getting there around the same time, let me know so we can hook up for some hoop play!

Secondly, I have also been fortunate enough to get UK Hoop Gathering tickets. I am so stoked that Beth Lavinder will be there! And judging by the location, I am expecting a really magical time. :o)

More locally, some of us London Hoopers have been exploring the different hooping opportunities that have been presented to us.
Last weekend, I hooped it up in front of a crowd of trained dancers and dance students at Move It! the UK's annual dance convention at Olympia, London.

On Friday, a small group of us became part of the entertainment crew at Planet Angel - a not-for-profit clubnight that likes to keep things strictly word-of-mouth.

But I think the most magical of all was the Hyde Park Group Hoop we did a couple of weeks back: 3 of us hooping to the acoustic sounds of Nick Drake in a bandstand in Hyde Park, amidst a backdrop of skaters and a beautiful golden pink sunset. If that's a strong indication of many a spring/summer night ahead, then bring it on!

Hello Tracey, im going to be attending L1 Hoopgirl too!
I live 15mins drive from nuneaton so would love to come hoop it up somewhere, hopefully the weather is nice in April and we can take full advantage of outdoor hooping!

Hi Guy's personal practice has not been happening for me lately, even though I booked an extra half an hour at the dance studio I use. Trouble is the students come early and begin to hoop, I then feel compelled to assist them.

Unfortunately, I won't be at level 3. I feel a bit left out to tell you the truth. It feels like I'm the one member of the family missing that important family gathering. Some of us who completed Bodyhoops last March also reunited for Hoopgirl so for me it will be strange not to be there.

I'm travelling to Jamaica again and will be performing in Negril and running a workshop in Ochio Rios, so Hoopgirl would be very tight for me anyway.

The UK Hoop gathering will also have to be a miss for me as I have an event on that day.

I'm awaiting to find out whether I am successful in my bid for funding, I will keep you guys posted as I have a few things I want to achieve this summer.

Ah, Michelle - we'll miss you!!! We'll feel like a member of the family is missing too - :o(

And as for personal practice - could you not start your class 1/2 an hour earlier and play afterwards...? Or is there any way you can keep the door closed to them until you're ready...? Maybe put a sign up that there is private tuition on or something? My dance teacher does that.

            Jamaica sounds lovely!

So it looks like spring has finally spring here in the midlands today, i hope it is just as sunny wherever in the UK you all are! Time to lug all my hoops into the garden and get some fresh air hooping outside after being stuck inside in the summer, I have recently moved from 1" x 40-42" hoops down to 3/4" x36" hoops which are also lighter so i mayt have to jump back up again to get a good workout for the arms lifting and lowering a heavy hoop again!

Great idea starting up this discussion Sue, the board had become quiet so its good to see what everyone is up to over the coming months.

That is a big jump in hoop sizes Hannah. If you have some tubing left make yourself another 20mm hoop somewhere in the middle. You'll find that quite useful outside in the summer for learning new stuff on. If you want to make your smaller hoops a little heavier for more muscle power, add another layer of tape.

I'm not sure a bigger hoop is better exercise though. They are heavier of course, but move slower. The faster hoops mean more reps, so what you loose in one you gain in another in my opinion.

This week has been beautiful weather. Today was lovely.

I won't be at the hoop gathering as it'll be too expensive, but for you lucky people going, have fun!
I haven't been doing a lot of hooping lately, and my body is hating me for it. Although I did have a 5min jam yesterday which was pretty fun :)

Come on Mon, get back into hooping and on here. We need you and your body needs your hoop for fun and relaxation. You love it when you get going. Now it's spring its definitely time to get back into it.

      :~)

Thanks for the support! It's what I need hehe. I hope I'll be able to donate a little bit of time to hooping especially with my finals coming up, if anything I'm sure it'll help me destress.

            Hello lovely beautiful hoopers!

I'm doing my best to get my local community hooping, I'm having a small impact in terms of classes, those who attend have an awesome time. I've done a few events and hoping and praying that the seeds I'm planting grow some roots. I have 3 classes running in Milton Keynes, all the hoopers are progressing brilliantly! They always leave with big smiles on their faces. I've used all of my skills, (acting, writing and my beloved hooping) and created a beautiful play to introduce hooping, tolerance, sharing and friendship to 5 - 7 year olds. All the schools I've performed at have absolutely enjoyed the show and it's been the bestest feeling to see young children excited about exploring movement and hopefully thinking differently about supporting each other, it's a story that is more than about hooping!

My own private hooping practice is good, with so much effort on the performing it's a bad idea to learn any new moves which might cause injury so I suppose I'm not being particularly daring in some peoples eyes, it's bad to arrive at work with a limp or a black eye so until I've finished my tour I'm protecting my hoopy body as much as I can! So I'm exploring my other direction in practice, researching and really enjoying it. I've been meditating with my hoop and having the most extraodinary experiences, very personal and private and delicious! I'm a trained hypnotist so these experiences I've been having have fuelled some exciting research! I love interacting and having a love affair with my various hoops, it makes me want to be with others and to also be alone, it makes me want to share everything I know with anyone who wants to learn it. I want to acquire skills from new friends. I want to engage with my local community and the national community, get us talking, get us interacting and saying there is life with less tv, it's fun and there's music and cake, there are so many unique hoopers to join in with and learn from. I'll do what ever it takes to get Milton Keynes hooping and enjoying it. I want to see lots of pretty hoops spinning and everyone smiling who dares to have a go! I'm gutted I'm so poor and have no money to come to the gathering, it's exactly the kind of event I promote for those who really enjoy festivals. I'm hopefully hooping at a Carnival in my local area one of the days the gathering is going on so I'll be waving the hooping flag in my own way albeit disjointed from the majority of my friends and potential friends!

Love to you all hoopers! :o)

Ah, Janine, you make me smile. Not exactly a small "to do" list here is it?

But I'm with you on being busy and watching less TV. I don't have one, and it's great.

Keep plugging it. It takes time, but these things grow slowly.

Hello. I have just joined this tribe so thought I'd take the double plunge by replying to a thread and introducing myself at the same time!!

I'm Lily, I live in Worthing (near Brighton) and have been hooping a couple of months. I do other kinds of dancing so I'm quite a dance-focused hooper. I've learnt my stuff so far from DVDs and Youtube clips but I'm struggling now as I'm running out of easy moves to learn and am finding the harder moves really tough (I have lots of bruises and have whacked myself in the face a lot!)

I'm still enjoying it though, and I've been having a lovely time hooping on the seafront recently, when the weather's been nice.

I enjoy online chatting and am very pleased to be making contact with some other hoopy folk.

Hello Lily, nice to meet you. How lovely that you can hoop on the sea front. I'd love that. I think there are quite a few hoopers in the Brighton area, and probably teachers too. Keep your eyes open for classes.

Have you found the Hooping Tutorials tribe? That's a good one for picking up tips. And Saffire's on-line hoop dance classes seem like a great idea. I think Hannah is taking them at the moment. Ask her what she thinks, they may be a suitable next step for learning.

But on the whole, all new tricks seem impossibly hard at first, and then with practice and constant failure, they suddenly work! And you feel fantastic. I think the biggest trick to master is timing. Once you understand where you hoop is and where the space within the hoop is at any given point in time you can instinctively know when to make the move.

Is there anything specific we might be able to help you with?

      Hi Lily,

Let me join the others in welcoming you to Tribe. :o)

Yes, hooping by the sea is about as good as you can get. I was actually in Brighton last Sunday/Monday for a weekend getaway. Were you down there as I saw a couple of hoopers there too?

Your dance background will certainly help where music and flow is concerned. And remember, if you've got those 2 down, then even the most basic of moves will look amazing.

Good luck and hope to chat to you more often! ;o)

      t. xx

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Hope you enjoyed your weekend down here, Tracey.

I generally go hooping on the seafront early morning in Hove. I'm an early bird anyway and I feel a bit self-conscious getting into my groove when it's busy during the day!! It's nice and quiet early in the morning - just me and a few joggers & dog walkers, and the sun rising over the water. Lovely!!

I expect the hoopers you saw were closer to the pier - that's where the poi spinners etc tend to hang out. Bit too far into town for me.

Haven't been able to hoop today because I hurt my thumb quite badly yesterday. It's starting to feel better now though so hopefully I'll be back out with my hoop tomorrow if the weather's fine. I'm trying to learn an underarm toss which I can't try indoors because we have low ceilings! Do you all have scuffs all over your living room ceilings too?!

**decides to de-lurk for the first time in yonks**

I have to admit, I've kind of neglected Tribe :/ I guess for me it's because Facebook is where everyone (hoopers or not)seems to be, and then Tribe went all quiet so I kind of..er.. forgot about it. But I'm going to try and make an effort to be more active around here. I've also been more than a bit of a sloth in general, going to bed/getting up too late, and not really hooping! Not good..time to fix up!

I was hooping alongside Tracey at Planet Angel on the 13th, which was awesome - definitely a learning curve. And I'm so glad we got asked to go back, and am so looking forward to it! There are loads of club nights going on in London that I believe are hoopfriendly, so I'm concentrating on those (since it costs me a load to get into London each time), and I want to start doing more practice at home - especially since I've worked out how to get videos off the 'net and onto my mp3 player. :D And I'm looking forward to the summer...and filling out my schedule! I'm really excited about going to the Secret Garden Party with Tracey in July, plus there are loads of day festivals, the summer is going to be sweet. I wish I could come to the UK Hoop Gathering, so badly, but the SGP is going to be my 'thing' this year. And Hoopgirl is definitely out of the question... oh well, maybe next year...

This weekend should be good, hoopwise! A birthday party with hooping on Saturday night, and hopefully I'll be at Jackson's Lane this weekend, and see some of you there! xx
