Can someone help? I'm stumped!?

This is gonna sound like a bit of a silly q but.. when making hoops the size of the hoop is determined by the inner diameter isn't it?!

I have had a few orders lately from ladies that have just started a new local class and have been told to order 40" hoops as that is what they are using in the class. I have just had a call from a lady to say that the hoop i made her is WAY bigger than the one she uses in her class? Sh measured it and says it was 43"!! Oh no it wasn't - I measured it when I made it!! How do you think she got this measurement?!! I haven't measured the ones at the class (but will do tomorrow to sort this problem out) but now I'm worried that I'm doing something wrong with my measuring? Can someone put my mind at rest with this please?! Thank you so much!

Hoop diameter is the inside measurement, the one that touches the body.

To make a 40" hoop you need 3.27meters of tubing.

Of course their original hoops could be smaller and they have been given the wrong size.

    Hoop that helps.

Thank you Sue - I thought it was!

I'm going to measure them myself today - it's the only way I can eliminate it happening again!

      Have a great weekend!!

P.S - thanks for the super fast delivery of my connectors!! xx

You are welcome, but because we don't use many surnames on Tribe, I had no idea that you had bought some!

They make hoop making so easy. I remember way back when..... like 2 years ago!

Just a quick response as I don't have capacity for more tonight - also check that she has masured her hoops at at least 3 points - if they've been stored standing up they can go slightly egg shaped so will measure much more on one side.

And as for being <that> precise with measurement - fleh. As long as it comes to the right height on your body, and is comfortable to hoop with, it doesn't matter.

And last thing - 40" is quite small for a beginner...

I'll try and come back tomorrow to better articulate this.

I'm glad this is being discussed as I've always measured on the OD (outside diameter) - so that means I'm actually giving my students a smaller hoop! Though they all seem to coping well with them, now I understand why a few have struggled in the past. :o\

I agree with Kitty though: whatever feels comfortable for the user is the size that they should start off with (regardless of what that size may be).

Hah, I just reread my post and it pretty much covers it all - wasn't sure how it read as I was slightly floaty and tired last night after returning from HoopGirl level 3 (yay).

I only really bother measuring hoops for myself, and even then not precisely. If I'm making hoops for students, I tend to use their height & general size as a gauge, or measure against the hoop they use in class and are comfortable with; which is why it's a good idea to have a range of hoops for people to try and get the feel of.

Thank you all for your replies!

I measured the hoops they are using and they are 37!!!! Crrrrrrrrikey - they're doing well beginning on that size eh!

I think it was a mistake in the ordering of them as the lady running the class asked the gym to order 40" so as far as she was aware (she doesn't make hoops herself so wouldn't think to measure them) they were, hence advising students to request 40" hoops from me! Poor thing!

Problem solved now though! Thank you all again! xxx

I always measure my hoops from outside edge to outside edge. If you are measuring how big something is I don't understand why you would leave a bit of it out. That seems very strange to me!!!
i think most people measure outside edge to outside edge otherwise any of the other hoops i have ordered would have been the wrong size for me.

Theres probably an old thread on the hula hoop tribe i'll check and post it if you want
also if you're making it for yourself the measuring isn't so important but if you are selling hoops you need to make sure you are fairly accurate.

It's the hole in the middle that's important for a hoop because that's what designates the space the hooper has. So the inside measurement is the usual one to use. Otherwise a 40" hoop would only have 38" of usable space.

I'm sure there is a thread with this in somewhere.

yeah i looked for the thread but i only found different threads with different opinions/information in them.

i think i'm just going to state on my website that i'm measuring outside edge to outside edge then i'm covered.
it's true about the usable space being the inside diameter but only if you're doing on body moves :) for off body moves i need to know the size so my dwarf like body can cope without smacking the floor.
                      i miss you sue xxx
