Ok so I'm becoming obsessed with the size of hoops!! Ha ha!! Not really!
I fully agree that the size of the hoop is down to the individual needs and feel of the hoop when used, but........ when making pre-made hoops for an event to sell at (next weekend) I need to go prepared with different sizes. It will be mainly for children so I will be using 20mm pipe and I'm thinking 34 /36 /38" for averaging sizes between the ages of 5-12, do these sizes sound ok?
Also... I measure my hoops from inside edge to inside edge and last night I was trying to work out the length of the pipe needed so that I can just measure it round the outside of the pipe each time (for speed) as opposed to laying it on the floor and holding it over the tape measure (which is what I have been doing). Not being the most mathematical person on the planet, needless to say I had a nightmare with it, and Iwondered if anyone had any standard length advice for each size of hoop with 20mm pipe!?
Here were my results!! (don't laugh! as they didn't turn out the size I wanted at all!!)
33" Hoop - 108" circumference of pipe
35" Hoop - 114.5 circumf.
36" Hoop - now here's the laugh!... 115.5 / 117.5 / 117.5 / 117.25 circumf!
Arghhhh!! What am I doing wrong??? Help!! :)
Thank you in advance!!! xxx

Re: Hoop Sizing
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 8:42 AMHey Sarah,
I have just been waffling on to you in an email but in case other people are interested there is a way to get the circumference the same everytime...
But firtsly I think it's more important that YOU are consistent in how YOU measure and make your hoops. In my class, they try out hoops and if they like a certain size I tell them what that is and then they order that. It's like clothes shopping - in one shop you might be a size 10 in another you could be a 12...you have to try it on don't you! If it fits nicely then I will buy it! If I sold them online it would be different as my market would be with people who hadn’t tried out one of my hoops. But I don't so it's not an issue for me at the moment.
Anyway - if you want maths then try taking the hoop size you want e.g. 36 and then multiplying it by pi (3.14) = the circumference. Test it first to check it gives you the size you want as I haven't done this for a long time. Now I have a stock of hoops, I usually just use them as templates. So if I’m making a 36 I hold up another 36 and base it on that one. It’s much easier.
I hope that helps.
S.x

Re: Hoop Sizing
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 3:35 PMHi Sarah
Its amazing how hoop sizes have reduced in 2 years, I made this chart about then, 2 years ago. And I worked out the spiral length of tape to tape a hoop: www.slimshader.co.uk/hoopchart.html
Reckon i should update it for hoops from 30" now. If you need any maths just ask, I must be a freak cos I love maths, lol. -

Re: Hoop Sizing
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 7:40 AMThanks you two!!
Sal - I think the template idea is a goodun so when I get them right I shall do that for ease & speed! :) Nice one!
Alan.. blimey! That's detailed - good work!! You even have the number of tape spirals on there!! Amazing! I reckon you should update it for smaller hoops and 20mm pipe! It's very usefull and very interesting - thanks so much for posting it! :)
I consulted my Mum yesterday who is a maths teacher (how come I didn't get that maths gene then!?), and she advised of the pi thing too, so we worked it out using that ,based on 20mm pipe! Tonight I shall be trying the maths out!!
Aw... how is it all hoopers are just SO nice?! I love the hoopy world!! :)
Big thanks again! xxxxxxxx
