Hello hoopers,
Im venturing into the hooping world of minis through safires online community (www.safiredance.ning.com). I have made a pair of 22" hoops from 20mm piping, however they feel too heavy and thick is that makes sence. Also the connectors tend to stick out, and theres a large gap between pipe at the inner joint, so they are not 100% circular.
Does anybody have any tips for making minis (20-27")?
Thanks x

Re: Making minis
Fri, May 15, 2009 - 8:37 AMHi Hannah,
I've made myself a pair of 20" minis, and they weren't easy to do at all. Mine feel heavy and unwieldy too - I think the weight is because the tubing we have in the UK is heavy to start with, and the thick feeling is probably just because the hoops are proportionally smaller than your used to, so feel odd.
I've got an exaggerated bump where the connector is and a fair sized gap too (i filled it with blu-tack). That's caused by the pipe being forced into a circle which is really too small for it, and again with the proportions - with the connector you're introducing a couple of inches of straight plastic into a very small circle, so it will show up quite a bit.
If you can get your hands on a pair of HoopGirl's zoom hoops - they're great. We used them at Level 3, and they were super light weight. I kinda wish I'd bought a pair now, but I'd already taken out major shares in HoopGirl merchandise by that point! LOL. I don't know if she left any behind to be sold... maybe Diana knows....?
If I remember, I'll stick my minis in the car for hoop club tomorrow so you can see them (if you'll be there)

Fri, May 15, 2009 - 9:11 AMThanks for the replies sue and kitty!
I am going to be at hoop club tomorrow, that would be grand if you could bring yours along, i will bring mine too. From the sounds of it I came across the same problems as you making them.
Like the idea of sawing on 1/2" sue that might be a good temporary solution unitl the little birdy gets a supply of tubing!
In the park Christabel mentioned using gas pipe tubing for hoops, so i was wondering if that was an option.. havnt looked into it yet through! I know a few gas men so i may beg/borrow/steal any tube to try it out. -

Re: Making minis
Fri, May 15, 2009 - 2:47 PMThe gas pipe Christabel talked about is for the HoopGirl travel hoops (I had one with me), not the zooms and zips. Gas pipe in the UK is very brittle, and although it's possible to make a hoop, you'll lose more pipe thru snapping than you'll get into actual hoops as it's not intended to bend the same way as the mdpe water pipe.
If you can get some freebies though, it might be worth a bash....

Re: Making minis
Fri, May 15, 2009 - 9:04 AMYou can trim about 1/2" off the ends of a connector with a fret saw to make them less bulky for the minis. But the tubing is heavy.
However, a little bird has told me that someone here in the UK is working on getting hold of the light tubing we need for sale here in the UK. Hopefully that will come off soon.
Oh, and it's not me by the way.

Re: Making minis
Thu, July 9, 2009 - 6:12 AMI don't think there was anyone more deseving of winning the LED mini's! at UKHG! Nice one Hannah!!! :) xx
I made a 18" (ish, inner diameter) hoop after UKHG, sawed off the ends (great tip sue - thanks!), but had the same problem as Kitty - one end perfect - the other slightly kinked.. gonna give it another bash though! What do you think is the ideal inner diameter for mini's anyone, mine seemed ever so small!?? Hannah - what do your LED's measure, if you don't mind me asking as they seemed ideal!?
Thank you! :) x
