I have been contacted by someone who is running a corporate event on 2nd August in the Barnet area.
They want to include hooping as part of an array of events and activities, and are looking for a 'team' of 6-10 hoopers to perform, demonstrate, teach and run workshops/classes. You will need to take hoops for participants to use.
This is a whole day event and is as much a performance as a teaching opportunity.

If you think you would be able to do this (it clashes with the L2 Hoopgirl training in Nuneaton), then please message me for further details.

Happy hooping!

I thought I would put this on Tribe because it is likely to reach more people who can offer help.
I have had an enquiry from someone wanting a Hoop Teacher to teach a one hour course on a Saturday morning in Central London.

This is at 11:30am and would run for 4 weeks starting on Saturday 27th September and running up to, and including, 18th October.

I know several of you are in the London area, but maybe central London, and a Saturday lunchtime don't work for all of you.

So, can anyone help?

If so drop me a message and I will put you in touch with the lady so you can discuss prices etc yourself.

I realise that it might easily be something that I could get bored of if I spent *all* my time doing it which would mean that doing it part time, "on the side", would be much more attractive and less stressful. And then comes the question of trying to strike a balance between supply and demand; not to mention "for love" or "for profit" (or both??)

Would be interested to hear - through other hoopers' experiences - the "pros" and "cons" of making and selling hoops.

I have only been making hoops for myself and my friends but I am thinking about selling them at local events - if I do, where do I stand on the safety / legal side of things? Do the hoops have to go through a saftey standard test or something before I can sell them to the public? I'm just worried that I'll get "busted" if there are regulations that I should be following and am not aware of them!! I don't want to sell until I'm sure I'm ok to do so!
I was wondering how many hoopers were going to come along to the Play Festival at Llanfyllin, Wales?
http://www.playfestival.co.uk

I was hoping to set up a beginners workshop or two and also a few trick swap sessions.
Hyperloop Hoops will be there with a stall, so we will hopefully have a good amount of space outside the stall for hooping in and we will also have a chill out area under an awning to take a break, have a drink and a chat.

The festival is fairly small scale, so no panic of being over powered if it's your first festival. There will be renegade acts and shows/music on most nights and the rest of the time is laid back learning time. There will be juggling, Acro, Contact Juggling, Poi, Staff, Contact Staff, Hula-Hoop, Contact Poi, Unicycling, Face Painting, Balloon Modeling, Daily and Nightly Shows, Workshops, Bands, Loads of Live Music, devil stick, single/double/triple Diabolo, stilt walking, street performance, whips, fire, yoyo. Children are welcome, but must be supervised at all times.

If getting there is a problem for you, check out the forum on the website to see if you can find a lift share. There is also info on public transport on the website.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible!

So i have persuaded my boyfriend that spending around £150 on a hula hoop is a good idea, and he has agreed to buy me one for my birthday.
I already know that i want a PSI, but what kind? I want it to be mega bright with lots of colours. I will get the whole 24 leds, but what types and is it worth getting 2 circuits. Patrick from PSIHOOPS has sugessted 16 dragonfly and 8 elfin. But i have no idea. I was thinking 12 elfin on one curcuit and 12 dragonfly on the other, but then i think i would just have both circuits on every time i use it anyway so there is probably no point.

Also i am very happy with my 40" 20mm hoop, that is a little flexible. I want to match this as close as possible. What did everyone else get? flexible or stiff?
This is a very hard decision. I know a lot of you have already got PSIHOOPS. Please help!!!! Many thanks X X X

Well, Saturday will be here before we know it and some of us will get the chance to meet up and hoop together in Nuneaton. Here is a rough time-table and plan. If you can come to one, two or all three of the separate sections it will be lovely to meet you and I'm sure we will have some hoopy fun.

10am - 12 noon
We will be hooping in Nuneaton town centre for fun and to hand out leaflets and encourage folk to come along to the park in the afternoon for the various events taking place there. Our job in the town is to act as an advertisement. There are a number of other events taking place in the town at the same time, also to encourage people to come and join in the park fun later. This means we are not exactly sure where we will be, but John is certain we will be in one of about three places, all easy to find. So if you can come and join us for this part of the day he recommends that you park in the Ropewalk multistory car park. From there, walk across the footbridge and go down the escalator. At the bottom, turn right and walk all the way through the shopping complex in a straight line and out the doors at the end. We may be here, by the fountain, but this is a popular spot so we may not be here! :~) If not, turn right and keep walking until you find us. The other squares are in a line from here.

1 - 4pm
Riversley Park (within walking distance of the town centre) John is expecting to have a roped off area provided to encourage people to pick up a hoop and have a go. Last year he was a bit swamped with enthusiastic people, so if any of us fancy giving him a hand, showing people how to start, selling them a hoop, encouraging them etc it will be appreciated. But at the same time we are free to do our own thing and dance to our own music near-by. Again, the spectacle of us hooping (and it's a certain spectacle if I'm hooping!) will hopefully draw folk in and encourage them to have a go. There will be some fair rides and other things going on, so it should be a good afternoon. As I say, last year was very busy.

When the band stand is in session we will be able to hoop to them (but not compete with them using our stereo) but the park is big, if we want to move off there is space.

Then in the evening there is a picnic with a brass band in aid of a Hospice in the nearby grounds of the George Elliot hospital. £5 fee I think, bring your own food and drink and enjoy the music. At first John thought we were going to be doing a demonstration in the interval and encouraging people to have a go again, but there are question marks above this at the moment.

However, there will be a space to the side of the main lawn where this is happening that we will be able to hoop along to the band if we want to, or we can just chill out and enjoy the evening (lets hope it's dry).

Being far from home and outside all day taking a picnic for the evening, or even lunch, will be logistically difficult so I guess there is a high probability of dashing off to M&S for sandwiches and juice at various points.

I would warn that if you bring your own hoops, bring a means to keep them together so that they don't get pinched or used by newbies and keep your eye on them. I will tie mine together and possibly put a label round them.

John is sorting out a cd player, I'll be bringing some music, but I would really appreciate it if you brought some of your favorite hooping tunes along too.

Please can you respond to this post and let us know if you are coming to join us and for which bits.

Thanks.

John asked me to write a little report on the Rugger Tavern as I understand a few of you are booked in for Hooopgirl training in August.

It is run by Mr Singh and family who together with the staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. It was clean and tidy.

The rooms are pretty basic with twin beds, two tables, wardrobe, towels and TV .. But adequate. Only one pillow on each bed but as I was alone I doubled up. The road outside is a bit noisy but I love fresh air so slept with the window open but slept well in spite of noise. (Haha after a few drinks at bar !! )

There is a wash room with four toilet cubicles and three wash hand basins and mirrors. There is a shower room with four shower cubicles. All clean and hot and cold water worked well. There were two electric hand driers but neither seemed to work for me although they were both switched on.

Bed mattresses were a bit thin and one could feel the springs by hand but actually they turned out comfortable.

I think I was the only customer and had room 1 but with eleven rooms if all were occupied there could be some congestion with the showers and loos at rush hour !!

The pub was good and friendly with golden oldies background music. A pint of Tetley’s was only £2 .. cheapest I have known in years !! A large Grouse was £4.20.

Now the excellent bit, the restaurant was amazing imo. Eat as much as you like from 21 indian dishes, lamb, chicken, tandori chicken, 4 different rice’s, 4 potatoes and baji dishes and all sorts of salads and spices. Colour coded for hotness .. Red, orange and green.

If you want a sweet it is £1.90 extra but I just had two dinners !! Chicken then Lamb and Tandori Chicken.

There is no breakfast and you just let yourself out in the morning. There are two staircases, one to the pub and one to direct outside access in order for you to come in after hours if it is shut. But along the road are two cafés if you want to eat breakfast.

It has a big car park so once there you can leave your car and easily walk down to John’s Club in a few minutes, just turn left and straight down crossing the road then just across the main road to the right of Library the other side of the little church.

For £20 including the meal I thought it was a real deal.

Hi Everyone,

Last year we hooped on World Hoop Day (07/07/07) in Nuneaton, and for those that remember the posts about that day it was also the 100th anniversary of Riversley Park being donated to the town.

Because of this, Nuneaton and Bedworth Council agreed to put on a day of celebrations and it was such a succes that they decided to celebrate the park's anniversary every year.

So, this year, on 5th July, I have been asked to do a hooping demonstration in Nuneaton Town Centre between 10:00am and 12:00 noon.

This will be followed during the afternoon from 1:00pm by hooping in the park, along with other activities, charity stalls, and even some fairground rides.

The day doesn't end there, because that evening from around 5:00pm the local Mary Ann Evans Hospice is having a Picnic Proms in their gardens with a Silver Band playing music while people sit having a picnic, drinking wine etc, and guess what, a hooping display during the interval, and a chance for people to "have a go" trying hooping themselves.

So, if you are available, if you can get to Nuneaton, let me know. You will be more than welcome to join in any or all of the events.

Sue has already said she will be there, so come and join in the hooping and lets see just how many hoopers we can get to show off their skills in Nuneaton !!!

Want directions? not a problem, let me know and I will send you more details.

Nuneaton is on the West Coast Mainline between London and Glasgow, so easy access by train, or we are just off junction 3 of the M6.

See you on 5th July.

John.
Thanks to ALL of you who have been so friendly and supportive during my first year (especially Sharna for being so inspiring and really championing the hoop movement in the UK and Sue for being a brilliant buddy to learn along side, despite the miles and the fact that we've never met!).

I can't believe how much it's taken over my life - my living room is now home to 30+ hoops, a huge box full of tape and rolls of MDPE pipe! If I'm not hooping, I'm usually thinking about hooping, or reading about hooping here on Tribe.
I'll start the ball rolling... my current faves are 2 dance tracks:

Temple of Dreams by Future Breeze
Komodo by Mauro Picotto

They're a few years old but have cropped up recently on an Aerobix CD I bought for my classes and they are real feel good house tunes to hoop to.

I know there've been loads of threads on the Hula Hooping tribe about taking hoops on aircraft, but they relate to travelling in and from the States/Transatlantic.

Has anyone ever taken a hoop on a budget airline in Europe? In particular, I'm hoping to take my PSI with me. My Inifinity will fit into my travel bag so not a problem, but my PSI doens't coil down that small, so it'll have to be carry on baggage. The restrictions on number of items you can take on board have been lifted from Manchester, so I don't have to choose between my hoop & my hand luggage, but I wonder if I'll have any problems either with them allowing me to take it on board and getting it through security.

Any help much appreciated.

Hoop Girl Level One training is now "FULL".

Yes, that is correct. Registration is now closed for level one.

So, offering lower prices for early registration has saved us all some money. *smiles*

There are still a few places left for Hoop Girl level two, so if you know anyone who has been thinking about it. tell them to book soon before this also fills up !!

Of course, if you are also doing HoopGirl level two, or if you just want to stay an extra day there will be a chance to hoop in the park on the Saturday to a band playing in the band-stand. (That is of course after a morning of shopping in Nuneaton Market !!!)

I look forward to meeting all of you on Level One soon. Not long to wait now !!!

If you couldn't make the HoopGirl training dates, you can still get some teacher training this year though as I understand that there is to be a new opportunity to take the Body Hoops level one training in the London area October 10th to 12th. I am sure there will be more details about this on Tribe soon.
Also, would it cover you if you went to a school and did a hoop workshop. if i am running 2 different classes in different venues and doing workshops does one policy cover me. As you can tell i know nothing about all this. Also i think this thread would be really helpfull for all those considering starting up a hoop class or meet.

I really want a fire hoop (having done it once Hmmm.)but I am too poor and they talk on the hula hooping and fire hooping site about making your own but its all American based information for buying things. Can we get the ingredients over here and does anyone know if it is easy/safe to do and how I would go about it. I will of course be very careful and always have a safety if i do build my own hoop. Just wondering if anyone was making they're own here and wanted to share info. Thanks Gail xxxxxxxxx

I'm just going to have a little moan about how much I miss hooping. I MISS IT! I should be studying but I went on youtube and was watching all the vids and my body was doing the moves while I was watching it and I could feel the hoop (even though I wasn't hooping) with every move and I just miss it! I haven't really played in a long while, partially due to laziness and partially due to the fact that I can't/couldn't seem to learn any more moves and was messing up the moves I did already know which just made me feel worse. I can't wait for summer to properly arrive though. The weather's been a bit crap lately to be honest..infact that's an understatement, but I'm hooping when the weather gets nicer and exams are out of the way, I'll get back into the hoop....Not to mention that I've grown fatter since I stopped hooping regularly! *blush*

So...who misses playing with their hoops or who's been naughty and not paying attention to their hoop? Make your pledge to yourself (and your hoop) to be a better hooper! :D

Christabel is coming to give her world famous HoopDance Workout Teacher Training at the end of July.

Christabel has also offered to run a Level Two course the week afterwards.....!!!!

This will only happen if enough people are interested.

This is probably the last time we will be able to get Christabel (and Candice) over to the UK to run Teacher Training.

So, if you are interested let me know as soon as you can.

OK, first you need to have done Level One, but Christabel says it is possible to do Level one the first week, and then go straight into Level Two the next week, as long as you have worked hard on her DVD, and can do most of the tricks shown, especially if you can also do many of the moves -------- wait for it -------- "In The Opposite Direction !!!

There is a discount being offered for Level Two, so sign up as soon as you can.

Want more information, feel free to Contact Christabel directly from her website contact form.

There are already 2 people signed up for Level 2, but we still need a few more to make it worth running.

Did you take Level One last year? Fancy taking Level Two, without the need to fly to California ???

Book Now !!!

Hopefully this will happen and I will see you there.

NOTE: You do not have to become a teacher at the end of either course !!! You can just attend to learn more hooping, and use this as ideal opportunity to learn from "HoopGirl" herself, and share skills with other Hoopers !!! Several people have attended just to progress their hooping expertise and really enjoyed it.

You never know, at the end of the course you might just think to yourself, "I never thought I could ever teach hooping to others, but now I am tepted to give it a go"

Check the details http://www.hoopgirl.com

Full info on my website (http://www.hoopswhirled.com). This is an opportunity to meet other hoopers and play in a space with a vaulted ceiling and a new sprung floor.

Talking of which, you will need to bring a change of shoes as Jacksons Lane management want to keep the floor as pristine as possible. This also means you can enjoy the spectacle of me and others wandering round with high fibre cloths - rubbing off any streaky hoop scars!!

Just wanted to share my progress with you all. I think sometimes we under estimate how powerful the Hoop is or maybe should I say as a new comer to the business. I attended a fun day yesterday, where I was given two half an hour slots. Well by the time I started to get the hoops out that was it, I was flooded with kids and some adults I must say who wanted to have a go.

It was very overwhelming and at times I found it hard to contain as the little ones would wonder off with the hoops nearer their mums. When the session had finished they didn't want to put it down. I had mums come back for more also.

The downside for me was that I didn't bring any hoops to sell. I was advised it was a free event geared around fitness and health. The many enquiries I had where kids wanted hoops to take home. It has taught me that next time I'll take x amount with me for people to purchase. However the plus is that I gave out loads of flyers and my contact details so they can contact me.

Just $1200 for both, this is to encourage more people to sign up for level two, if you have already booked level one then just pay the difference to a total of $1200

If you just want to take level two you can now do it for just $600.

OK, so it is Wednesday, Thursday Friday for level one, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday for Level Two, but you get Saturday off to explore Nuneaton Market, and to hoop in the park. There will be a silver band playing in the bandstand in the park in the afternoon, so a great chance to hoop outdoors and practice any new moves you have learned !!!

In reality the only hooping I've had the chance to do lately has been for my class and the half hour or so prior practice time. 'Seeing' Sue last night has made me want to hoop more often again as I feel that at the moment I'm getting a little rusty.

Hi

I have found a company who supply all sorts of tubing in reasonable quantities. I messaged them (they don't have a phone number you have to use their instant messaging), told them what I was looking for, and they sent me what they thought would be suitable.

The samples arrived today. They are clear PVC. I had expected a white tube, but it's clear. It comes in all sorts of sizes. They sent me 22 and 25mm bore, but of course we usually refer to the o/d when we use these measurements. The tubing is 3mm thick. These samples are too big for hoops made to take glow sticks etc. But they do a 19mm.

At the bigger size, they feel too soft. But the 19mm may be suitable. They also sell barbed straight connectors for the 19mm tubing.

I will now ask for a sample of the smaller sized tube. Meanwhile if anyone is interested the web site is www.altecweb.com. Start here http://www.altecweb.com/home.asp?cat=SectionE2%2E+Tubing+Products and go to PVC industrial grade.

30 meters of 19mm bore, 3mm thick tubing costs £74.16 + £12.97 VAT.
A pack of 10 suitably sized connectors cost £15.21 + £2.66 VAT.
Total cost = £105.00 and economy delivery seems to be free to the UK. Unless that turns out to be for a larger order. But it doesn't seem so.

If we allow 4meters of tubing for a hoop we can get 7 hoops out of a coil which makes them £15 each empty and undecorated. It may be too pricey, but it is within the realms.

I'll let you know what I think of the smaller 19mm when the sample comes.

Call me a fool << shouts "You're a fool" >>, but I ordered from One Stop Film Shop as no-one else seemed to have any electric blue tape in stock. Not only did they fail to deliver the order, but after I chased they didn't bother to respond to my phone calls or emails. Eventually the order turned up today and it was wrong, wrong, wrong.

When I called to complain - as you do - they fobbed me off with excuses that Scapa is in fact the same as Pro Gaff and they are generic terms for types of tape, not brands or makes of tape. Huh?? My invoice confirmation lists Pro Gaff Electric Blue, so why isn't that what they sent me?
Although they are willing to refund my money if I post the tapes back, they won't pay for postage, so it really isn't worth the effort.

Be warned, these tapes are expensive and it isn't worth being ripped off by companies like One Stop Film Shop, who believe they can be cavalier with the small customer. There is a photo showing the colour difference on my blog, if you are curious...

It would involve camping, so if you are allergic to sleeping in a tent be warned it will be happening. I've had a look around for some venues that have fairly cheap camping fees and have enough space for about 30-50 tents. I came up with a few ideas, but am still looking for some input from others.

I have been researching the web and such like and I am fine with the construction of the hoop. (I think anyway, we'll see when I actually have a go) Im just not sure about the right kind of tape. I want bright colours, but more importantly i want tape that sticks and doesnt slide down clothes. There are so many different names for tape, - gaffer, cloth, finger, vinyl, pvc ect. what are the best tapes for grip? I have hoops made from cloth tape, but i still cant leg hoop with clothes on as the hoop slides down. I read somewhere that Hockey tape is good - any ideas? Also what are the best sites to buy from? I would appreciate any advice as im eager to start my hoopmaking!

I can do a beam me up (yay! didn't realise it had a name till i checked) but I've noticed everyone picks up the hoop from behind them and I've only ever been able to do it from the left side in front of me. Believe me i've tried but the hoop always falls to the ground when I try to pick it from behind. Am I doing something wrong or is there a trick to it? I naturally hoop clockwise, and pick the hoop with my right hand (dominant hand) when i lift it up if that helps. it all gets a bit confusing when i try to hoop anticlockwise, but that's my goal, to be able to do so at some point.

Besides that, i'm pretty happy with my progress so far, i can't wait to learn more. my flatmate keeps telling me that i look like i'm dancing with the hoop and i'm just so excited and grateful.

Mainly because I often receive queries about classes in locations up and down the country and it would be useful for all of us to have a central point of reference so we know where to direct prospective hoopers.

As a starting point: I'm based in North London and primarily run classes in that area. I also have some corporate and other classes running in and around central and east London.

You would need to be free for the whole time and would have to have a circus style of performance rather than hoop dance style.

They are offering travel and accommodation & a wage. I know little more than that, other than a number to contact him on. If any of you are interested please contact me and I'll let you know his number.

Having done my level 1 training, last year I have really moved on with my teaching and now teach 15 classes a week. I am paid £25 per hour and have been asked to come back time and time again. Other fitness sites are contacting me now to train others. Remember at Level 3, you are then certified to train other teachers in the UK.

The quality of the Bodyhoops course is excellent. As a qualified fitness and exercise to music instructor, I would highly recommend this training. It is serious and fitness based.

BOOK NOW either through www.hoopguy.com or www.myhoopingstore.co.uk. The costs is £199 payable through Hoopguy, just contact him and he can take credit card payments. To pay through My Hooping Store, please call 07909562114. Please state which venue is suitable for you.

I'm so pleased with the hoopgirl one as I already learnt a lot of it in 2 days ^_^ *does a happy dance* I manged to lean, albeit a bit ropey & not totally polished to perfection...
One handed beam me up/'Float' - Though I still have probs doing this whilst turning...Is odd standing still I can do it ok but when moving round I get muddled & end up hitting myself with the hoop or my arm wrapping round me >_< So need more work on this.
I can easily do float down both still & moving & wildwest is also fine.
& I can do chest hooping no prob..actually easier than I thought it'd be..still trying to gain more control with it so it doesn't some times slip up on to my neck (though did work out how to get it to travel back down to chest when it does this)... but I know practise will be the key for all of this.
I also worked out another way of getting the hoop up travelling up both my arms then up above my head like a wild west to two hands in a prayer shape & then to one hand which I think looks nice. So yeah very pleased with a few days progress & excited to learn more! :D
My question is that doing the moves like beam me up & wild west etc I think the hoop is pretty heavy...& Was wondering if I would bennefit from using a lighter hoop? Or is the weight just something I'd adjust to?...As sometimes I find that it's a lot of effort to keep the hoop straight & horizontal (espesh one handed) & was thinking a lighter hoop might make the beam me up move easier, espesh whilst turning.
What do you guys think? I'm currently using a Hoop I got from hoopguy.com which is the 40'' diameter (which I think is a nice size) & it's the 'saturn' one which is the heavier style... Would I be better off getting one of the 'Venus' ones for doing dance/tricks? Please help 'cos I have no idea
