Fourth Plinth Hula-Hoop Flash Mob - Sunday 27th September; 6.00 PM – 7.00 PM; Trafalgar Square

Hi Hula-Hoopers!

There’s going to be a hula-hooping flash mob this Sunday, featuring hula-hooping groups, a celebrity hula-hooper and a hula-hooper taking over Anthony Gormley’s fourth plinth. There will be a photographer there and the photos will be distributed to national media – we can e-mail the final shots to anyone who attends.

All that’s necessary is to turn up at Trafalgar Square for 6.00 PM this Sunday – things will start to happen!

There will be a limited number of light-weight hula-hoops available on the day, but if you could bring your own that would be great.

I would really appreciate it if you could spread the word to any-one you know who may be interested.

Hope to see you there for some hula-hooping fun!
UK Hoop Database

Hi everyone,
To my knowledge, there isn't anything such as a UK database of hoop instructors and performers, and a friend of mine recently got in touch to ask how he could find a hooping instructor to teach at his gym... It got me thinking, because there was no real easy answer, apart from search engines and telling him to post on Tribe! I thought it would be a good idea to have some kind of "central" database that people could search for, so I have started to put one together...

If UK hoopers think it will be useful, I'm happy to get it a proper domain name but for the moment it is located at:

www.ukhd.leapintohoops.co.uk

I think it would be a great way to promote hooping and definitely to promote our skills to people looking for hooping (and hopefully get more work!), as it becomes more popular. I've tried to add a couple of people that I already know of but I would love to add as many people as possible. PLEASE send me your details if you are a hoop teacher or performer via the website!

Hi, I am 5 months into this amazing journey of my place within the hoop dance and I'm looking for others who share this passion. I want to skill share and get together with others in order to create a sence of community in the uk that is shared by many in the states. I am not a natural performer, I am not confident about being watched even when I am good at something but I do have skills and I am obsessed with the never ending ever increasing circles that I find myself encompassed within.

Come on in and relate your stories. Tribe is the better place for leaving a comprehensive trail of thoughts, photos and memories of our time at Wild Ways (a really lovely place to live and work if ever there was one), Facebook comments are nice to see, but soon disappear. Write it here and then we can discuss.

Hoop Making - How to Cut the Right Size Tubing

People often ask this question "how much tubing do I need to make a X" hoop?" Lindsey asked me again yesterday at hoop club, and so I said I'd put it up for everyone.

So here is a breakdown of the lengths needed, using the maths to work it out.

Hoops made using 1" (25mm) diameter tubing.

I'm on topic hijack at the moment! Tooo many questions!! Sorry!

Just to ask those of you who already have liability insurance (that aren't already covered by a gym qualification, or other means), do you think £157.00 a year is a good price? This would be to cover 1 x class session a week & up to 12 hoop jams! (This is the best I could put it to them! ) I have every intention of doing more than I have just said but for now, I thought this would suffice! Any ideas / suggestions welcome as I would love to hear some views before I go ahead and agree to this!

HUGE thanks!
Hoop Sizing

Ok so I'm becoming obsessed with the size of hoops!! Ha ha!! Not really!

I fully agree that the size of the hoop is down to the individual needs and feel of the hoop when used, but........ when making pre-made hoops for an event to sell at (next weekend) I need to go prepared with different sizes. It will be mainly for children so I will be using 20mm pipe and I'm thinking 34 /36 /38" for averaging sizes between the ages of 5-12, do these sizes sound ok?

Also... I measure my hoops from inside edge to inside edge and last night I was trying to work out the length of the pipe needed so that I can just measure it round the outside of the pipe each time (for speed) as opposed to laying it on the floor and holding it over the tape measure (which is what I have been doing). Not being the most mathematical person on the planet, needless to say I had a nightmare with it, and Iwondered if anyone had any standard length advice for each size of hoop with 20mm pipe!?

Here were my results!! (don't laugh! as they didn't turn out the size I wanted at all!!)

33" Hoop - 108" circumference of pipe
35" Hoop - 114.5 circumf.
36" Hoop - now here's the laugh!... 115.5 / 117.5 / 117.5 / 117.25 circumf!

Arghhhh!! What am I doing wrong??? Help!! :)

Thank you in advance!!! xxx

Hi all!

I know I've just missed out on some training sessions.. but does anyone know when the next ones will be for any of the three I mentioned (that's if Hoopnotica even offer it??). If there are no options on these for another year can anyone offer any other advice on what I might do instead or will I need to be patient and wait until 2010?? (nooooooooooooooo! :( )

Many thanks in advance! (I'm super keen to get going now after UKHG!!!)

Hi,
here at Rainbow-Hoops we’re having a birthday celebration,
a “I can’t believe UKHG is over” moment and newsletter fever.
Our birthday is being celebrated with a generous offer, all
the details are in the Newsletter, which, hopefully will go out
monthly-ish. It will contain details of our special offers and
new hoop designs plus any news the hooping community
wants me to include: hoop classes, events etc. I’m often
asked what’s on and I direct queries to the links page at
Rainbow-Hoops, if you want me to put links to your sites
I’m happy to do the reciprocal thing.

So if you want a copy of the newsletter send your email address
and I’ll put you on the list.

Lastly, I just want to say how terribly proud we are of Gem’s
enormous effort in doing the UKhoopgathering, what a wonderful
success it was. And how lovely it was to meet you all, to put faces to
names I’d e-mailed or heard spoken about. It was an honour
to see such amazing hooping, knowing how difficult it is.
Thank you

mandy 

(aka hoopma)

Hello hoopers,

Im venturing into the hooping world of minis through safires online community (www.safiredance.ning.com). I have made a pair of 22" hoops from 20mm piping, however they feel too heavy and thick is that makes sence. Also the connectors tend to stick out, and theres a large gap between pipe at the inner joint, so they are not 100% circular.
Does anybody have any tips for making minis (20-27")?

Thanks x

Cost £11, inc shipping from Amazon (it is advertised at a cheaper price on there, but they then add shipping on) PM me if you'd like it - Paypal only, or can bring to Hoop Gathering in 2 weeks (2 WEEKS!!!) if you're going!

I finally want to get round to making some of my own hoops. I've found that it's not as easy to find the tubing as I thought.
Where does everyone in the UK get their tubing and connectors from?

I prefer the smaller and lighter stuff, that's about 3/4 inches thick and slightly flexible.

Are you going to the Leamington hoop meet?

Want to make a full weekend of it?

Come and hoop at Kenilworth on the next day, Sunday 17th May, at their Kenilworth Party in the Park event.

Kenilworth is just a couple of miles away from Leamington and Warwick, so you will be in the right area.

Lots of things happening at the Park, and I have been asked to put on a hooping workshop for people to come and have a go, so if you can get to Kenilworth just follow the signs for "Party in the Park", and come do some hooping !!!

The Party starts from 10:00am but the hooping will be happening between 12:00 noon and 4:00pm (at least, maybe longer....)

We should be near the main stage, so lots of music to hoop along to.

"Hoopfully" see you on Sunday. *smiles*

John.

Support the Hoop Gathering!!! Beg Borrow and steal

Come to the hoop gathering!!! I understand that money is pretty tight for people this year ( I have 4 weddinggs this summer!) but i really feel that people need to support our community and think about attending the UK hoop gathering. The main complaint i have heard from UK hoopers over the last 18 months is that we are so spread out and don't have anyone to hoop with. I think hoop gathering is a fantastic event for people to get together and learn and i it is actually a hell of a lot cheaper than i thought it was going to be especially considering the calibre of workshops that Gemma has managed to pull together already! The £124 or £144 includes accomodation and all your food and drink thats less than you'd pay on a weekend away with friends or at a festival and thats before you evn take into account the teaching.
I think we need to help our community grow, there are some fantastic events going on in America this year like FLOW and Hoop Convergence if we want to start having events like that over here then i think we need to get behind Gemma and attend this event also I really want to catch up with a lot of the people i have only met online or briefly at teacher trainings!!
So beg borrow and steal and get yourself there!!!

Hoop Connectors for collapsible hoops

I'm considering trying to make some more portable hoops. I want the bits to easily come apart and go back together, but I also need the hoops not to fly apart when I'm spinning...

I found a site with a method that looked interesting here:

http://kristent.wordpress.com/2009/04/02/hoopconnectors/

And searched out a few places that will sell the part in the UK.
http://www.minimarquees.com/p/r-classic_inner_leg_spring_clip-130-9-149.aspx
http://www.justkampers.com/shop/camping/leisure-camping-outdoor-accessories/awning-tent-accessories/spare-pole-button-clips-pack-of-3-for-use-on-awning-or-tent-poles-j12752.html
http://www.east-coast-leisure.co.uk/modules/shop/view.asp?Prodcode=197
(Thought I'd share the links as it took me hours to find them!)

Anyone else tried anything like this? Or using a different method to make collapsible hoops?

This is gonna sound like a bit of a silly q but.. when making hoops the size of the hoop is determined by the inner diameter isn't it?!

I have had a few orders lately from ladies that have just started a new local class and have been told to order 40" hoops as that is what they are using in the class. I have just had a call from a lady to say that the hoop i made her is WAY bigger than the one she uses in her class? Sh measured it and says it was 43"!! Oh no it wasn't - I measured it when I made it!! How do you think she got this measurement?!! I haven't measured the ones at the class (but will do tomorrow to sort this problem out) but now I'm worried that I'm doing something wrong with my measuring? Can someone put my mind at rest with this please?! Thank you so much!

Guys,

Thought I'd start a new thread about this so as not to hijack Sue's thread about what you're all up to just now.

Great that some of you will all be around for days between trainings! The day off between L1&2 is Sunday 19 April, and L2&3 is Thursday 23 April. So lets hoop! We can arrnage specific times closer to the dates, but I'm thinking we should just go hoop in the park from about lunchtime!

Who's in?!

P.S. If you're doing 2 levels, I would offer you one word of caution and that is to not overdo the hooping on your day off

Hello Happy Hoopers!!

After a long stint of hanging up my hoop very quickly after first picking it up - I feel I have been re-born!!

I got so frustrated that I couldn't do it - I resigned myself to being utterly useless and that I would never be a hooper.. I was totally gutted!!

BUT!!! I picked it up again 3 weeks ago and am "feeling the hoop" a lot better this time, and am getting to grips with the force of the hoop which I never got before! I am still a total klutz but have worked out some moves now - no grace yet though and am in dire need of some peronal help - not just DVD's which is all I have - and no one to turn to! :(

I was wondering if there were any one day workshops happening before May - does anyone know of any?
Also - with the Hoopgirl level 1 training - is this just for teaching or is this to enable people to learn to hoop?

Lastly - one question.. as soon as I start to move my arms or try to do any sort of dancing leg moves - my hoop drops! Arghhh! What am I doing wrong? My torso is still and my pelvis tucked in - but I look like a demented chicken all the time and then have to go into "hysterical hooping in a very stiff static back & forth move - with a pained expression" to get the hoop to come back up to my waist!! Any guidance on this would be very much appreciated!!

Lots of love to you all - Sarah xxx

OK, so I'm sad that this tribe is soooo quiet. Let's start it off again. Let's chat. In my opinion Facebook is getting worse and worse for meaningful communications, so let's remember how good Tribe is when it's up, which is more often than not these days. They deserve another chance.

What hoopy things are you all doing this weekend? Anything? Nothing? Going somewhere? Staying home?

Spill the beans and report back at the end, preferably with photos to prove it!

I've been feeling decidedly under the weather this week, so I've not had the energy to hoop. I'm hoping that Sunday could be the day I get to play. Lets cross everything for some dry weather to play in.

New! First Hoop Club in Leamington Spa

The Sunday hoop club run by Diana in North London is a very enjoyable and successful event now. It encourages people of all ages and shapes to pick up a hoop and have a go. I have been down a few times just for the fun of hooping in a space with others.

So I've decided to try and get hooping going in a more concerted way up here in the midlands so that I have more people to hoop with. I don't want to run classes, I don't have the time. But a monthly session would be lovely. So I've booked a venue! The aim is to hold an informal session for hooping in a great room with lots of height and width and length (although I can't provide the beautiful church style Diana gives us), to do an informal hooping club style session in Leamington Spa.

The first one is Saturday 21st February 2 - 4pm.
Venue:
The Space Upstairs
North Hall
Spencer Yard
Leamington Spa
Warwickshire
CV31 3SY

Fee: Adults £5.00 and concessions £3.50

This is literally about 3 minutes walk from Leamington train station and is often used by my theatre as a rehearsal space so I know it's excellent with nice loos etc.

If anyone would like to come, I'd love to see you. I have a fear that I'll be there on my own! I also worry that my music choice will be limited, so if anyone wants to come and bring along some music that we can share that would also be lovely.

OK, so you have been hooping for a little while now, and you would love to attend a teacher training session so that you can maybe start running classes of your own !!!

The only problem is which training should you attend, BodyHoops, or HoopGirl?

I have taken both and therefore I recommend you should consider doing both yourself.

Why am I suggesting this? Because if you only take one course you only have one point of view. Different teachers teach different moves, and even if they teach the same move (albeit with a different name) they may explain it differently, or hold the hoop in a different position.

I know this from experience. Certain ways of doing a move work better than others for some people, so it is good to see all possibilities, especially as a teacher, because if one of your students is struggling to do a certain move one way, your knowledge will then allow you to explain it a different way.

So what are the choices?

BodyHoops level one and level two teacher trainings are being offered this year by Marion and Jacqui, two very competent UK based BodyHoops Master Trainers.

HoopGirl is offering Levels One, two, and her new level three training this year assisted by Diana whao again many of you will know from London. Once more an exceptional teacher, and I believe the first UK resident to attend a HoopGirl training by flying to the USA around 3 years ago, hence the reason Christabel has chosen Diana as her UK assistant.

If you have not done a teacher training course before I would suggest doing both BodyHoops level one and HoopGirl level one this time.

You could actually do levels one and two with HoopGirl in one visit, but make sure you are prepared for this as it can be quite challenging both physically and mentally to do two levels of training with just one day off inbetween.

I certainly wouldn't recommend trying to do all three levels with HoopGirl in one go. Trust me, I did levels one and two last year and even though I had already done level one the year previously I found it very demanding.

So what is the difference between the two teacher courses?

BodyHoops is 3 days, of 4 hours per day. (March)
HoopGirl is 3 days of 8 hours per day. (April)

The prices for the relevant trainings reflect this difference, with BodyHoops being cheaper that HoopGirl.

Having said that, if you book HoopGirl before the first of March, and quote the special offer code "valentine" when booking you wil get a 25% discount, so even with the current poor dollar exchange rate this makes it really good value.

Bear in mind that many fitness instructors have large outlays before they start running classes, for example, to become a Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness franchisee can cost between £16,000 and £19,000 approx before you even run your first class, so I am sure you can see that an "investment of just a few hundren pounds for such great quality training is an absolute bargain.

So, don't just take my word for it. Speak to other people who have taken both BodyHoops and HoopGirl training and get their opinion as well.

Decide whether you are doing one or both and then look forward to hiring a hall and running your own fun classes.

Yes, we are in a recession, but people can still find a little money to enjoy themselves, and after all, hooping is not just about getting fit, it is all about having fun !!!

So, give it some thought, make that investment and book onto at least one if not both teacher training opportunities while you can, and while the price is low.

One word of warning, this may be the last chance we have to get HoopGirl Christabel Zamor over to the UK to run the training herself, so think carefully before deciding to leave it another year.

One final word. You do not need to attend this course just because you want to become a teacher.

Many people do not want to teach classes themselves but still attend just for their own personal development, and to hoop with other like-minded hoopers.

So, come along and share the joy. Be part of the hooping community, make friends, and then go home an even better "Hooper" than when you arrived.

Then keep in touch with those new friends through Tribe. *smiles*

For more information check out www.bodyhoops.com and www.hoopgirl.com

Happy Hooping !!!

Hello hoopers,
I'm sorry to have to announce that the March Hoop Club has had to be cancelled. This is due to a date clash with my travel plans resulting in me being out of London at a time when I should have been in London.

If you have been planning to come along I apologise for any disappointment, but I hope you will come to the April Hoop Club which will be on Sunday 5th April. As this is just before Easter, we will have an Easter bunny theme!

Come and share the madness that ensures after a gap in the schedule....

See you soon and happy hooping!

LED hoops

Ok, so I know there is a similar thread running at the moment...

I've decided to go travelling in a few months and, as I was going to get an LED hoop for christmas anyway, thought it would be great to get a collapsible hoop to take away with me.
There don't seem to be any places in the UK that sell LED hoops (surely someone could be making a lot of money of of this?).

The ones I have found from America seem a bit crappy. I have found others that sound perfect apart from the fact they are 1 1/4" thick!
I was hoping someone might know where I could get one from. I would ideally like it to be an inch or less thick, rechargeable, and ever so slightly flexible...anyone know anywhere?

Hula hoop classes in London

Hi all,

Am new to this tribe. Last night I had a dream about starting hula hooping classes, something I'd never, ever, thought about before, so I thought I'd give it a go! But I have no idea where to start.

Does anyone know where I can try hula hooping classes in London? I live South West but work Central....not free Tuesday nights.

Hope you can help!

Jen

UK 2009 Teacher Training Dates Now Available for Discounted Early Enrollment

*~* Cross posted on behalf of Christabel - please mention that you saw this post from me when you sign up! Thanks! *~*

Hello gorgeous UK hoopers~
Due to all the email requests, I'm coming back to Birmingham (Nuneaton area) to provide more HoopGirl teacher trainings! This time, I will also debut the Level 3 Training for the first time in the UK, which explores the spirit in the body-mind-spirit continuum explored in the HoopGirl Workout series. Like Level 2, Level 3 will be heavily move-based, actually teaching you all the hoop moves in the program. Each training is 24 hours in length, divided up over three days. I am so excited to share this material with you!! Since this will be a *very* busy year for me, this will be the only time I visit the UK in 2009.

I am also excited to announce that the spectacular Diana Defries of www.hoopswhirled.com, from London, will be working alongside me to share this material with you! Diana is the first British Licensed HoopGirl Workout teacher to have trained with me in 2006. Her astute insights into the local British fitness industry and hoop market, coupled with her excellent skills in training, publicity and conscious communication will provide a wonderful depth to our events.

I am providing HUGE discounts for early enrollment to enable those who otherwise could not attend to join in... read on below for those rates and how they will go up over time. I want everyone who passionately loves hooping and wants to learn excellent facilitation skills to be enabled to attend!

I want to caution those who are very ambitiously considering taking all 3 trainings in one go to consider the magnitude of these events, emotionally and energetically, before jumping in. You will need to be in *top* health if you want to take one, two or especially all of them. (Perhaps those who have attended previous trainings can chime in here with some advice about how to prepare and take care of yourself during multiple events?) You will be moving a lot during these transformational trainings-- hooping, reflecting, facilitating and basically stepping into the highest vision of yourself as a leader. Remember to pace yourself and nurture yourself every step of the way, wether you take 1 or all of them.

Pre-requisites for Level 1: Familiar with Hoopdance for Beginners DVD and experience teaching at least 3 people hooping
Pre-requisites for Level 2: Level 1 Certification, familiar with forthcoming DVD released prior to training, t.b.a.
Pre-requisites for Level 3: Level 2 Certification, an open mind (all moves will be taught at event)

We were sold out last year so I encourage you to sign up sooner rather than later if you plan on it.

Dates:
April 16-18 LEVEL 1
April 20-22 LEVEL 2
April 24-26 LEVEL 3

Early registration discounts and deadlines:

ENROLL BY DECEMBER 1
$1500 for all 3 trainings
$1050 for 2 trainings
$575 for 1 training

It is almost Christmas! (Time for one more Sunday Hoop club)

Can't believe we are nearly in December. Finished your shopping for crimbo? Me neither...
So. In the spirit of forgetting your worries and getting happy - let's get together on Sunday 7th December for one more Sunday Hoop Club, before the year draws to a close.

Date: Sunday 7th December
Venue: Studio 1, Jacksons Lane, 269a Archway Road, London N6 5AA
Time: 2pm to 4pm
Cost: £5 (£3.50 concs)

I'll bring hoops, music, enthusiasm and possibly a Christmas elf or two.
Please bring anything you may need (you can usually get bottled water there, but bring some with you if you prefer to do that) including your favourite Christmas hoop tunes - or other hoop tunes - to share.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Hoopers/spinners/performers needed for a TV AD London 5th or 8th Dec 2008 London

Today I got a call from a man called Stuart from the Fallon advertising company (they did the Sony Brava, balls down a hill ad) and he is looking for fire performers, poi spinners, hoopers... pretty much anyone wanting to show off smile to be in an event ad for the relaunch of the Cadburys wispa bar.

The campaign is going under the banner of For the love of Wispa and you can see the site about the relaunch at www.fortheloveofwispa.com

The ad will be made in London on either the 5th or 8th December (yet to be confirmed) and they will pay anyone wishing to participate expenses but not a performance fee. When asked why he told me that cadburys had promised to donate the monies left over from making the ad to Children in need.

If you wish to be involved you need to email stuart.pearman@fallon.co.uk or PM me and I will forward your name to Stuart

You're name, or if you prefer, your business name will be added to the pledge page on the Cadbury website and also get you contacts with this advertising agency (maybe future work, maybe not)

Sadly for all you younger performers you will not be able to join in as you have to be over the age of 16.

Please don't shoot me for the fact that they are not going to pay performance fees, I'm just passing on the message. If you contact the guy yourself you could try getting a fee. He's a very up beat guy and could possibly be talked into it.

I forgot to mention that Stuart said "everyone participating will get a shed load of chocolate"

Sorting out a Hooping Saturday Get-together

I've heard several people recently saying how much they would like to get together and hoop with others for a bit. Mostly they are those of us who live a long way from Diana's London hooping venue. So I've had a word with Kitty and she has a venue to offer; a nice church hall with kitchen, seating area and parking and isn't far from the station. It's available most Saturdays. It's in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

So, can we get a list of names of people who would like to get together at this venue? Can you also give us an idea of your Saturday availability before Christmas, or if you would prefer us to wait and do this in January when everything seems so dull.

Lets get a chat going and see what we can do.

I must be mad, I was going to suggest Leamington where I can get space and which is about 40 minutes from me. This will take me hours, but I know there are a few more northerly hoopers who would like to meet up.

Not sure about how this has come about on the internet, it was filmed by the Wellbeing live day that Diana D and myself attended to promote the Hoopdance Experinece. It is however listed under comedy and I'm called the crazy lady in the background....not sure what to make of it really. This was the fifth attempt at a continuous take, each time either music, loud speakers, pedestrians or irate sports coaches got in the way. Still it makes me laugh... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QF6fMgypEBo

Hey all havent posted in ages coz my hooping has kinda plateaued and cant crack any tricks. I am still doing very basic stuff and my body just seems incapable of even doing the simplest of stuff that someone who has been hooping 5 months should be able to do. So I had no news to tell as was feeling sorry for my poor hoop not getting any fun with me.

On a positive note since I started dance class I have no problems figuring what to do with my arms anymore - yah

This is my first winter as a hooper and I have to say I'm finding it really bloody frustrating! I don't have enough space indoors and it's just so cold outside. I tried hooping outside the other day and my hands were frozen within about 5 minutes and then I couldn't do anything. I'm desperate to have a good practice!
What do you all do to get you through the winter months? I really need to find a practice space but I can't think of anywhere where I won't have to pay. I miss hooping!

Halloween hooping in N10 (cross-posted from London Hoopers tribe)

Hello Hoopers.

On Wednesday 29th October, instead of my regular one hour class, we will have the hall for two hours so we can indulge in some Halloween Hooping!

This will *not* be a class, but a ghoulish evening of spooktacular hooping where we can whirl our way through lots of suitably haunting music. I hope to be able to decorate the surrounding a little for the occasion and may have a few surprises up my spectral sleeves... Costumes, make-up and general silliness is invited and encouraged!

Admission is £5. There will be some snacks and soft drinks. I'm also inviting folks to bring along any munchies they would like to share. This isn't a buffet, as such, but hooping is hungry work and we need to keep our strength up through the dark hours of twirling.

Mwah ha ha ha ha hhhhhhaaaaaahhhhh!

It is 4.58 am and I am ploughing through my tax return like a mental case (must learn my lesson this year and keep up :-) But, I have found the translucent tubing contact for the 25 mm natural tubing :-) The company is called Waterra (0121-733-7743) and the product number was HF-30, can't find out how much at the moment...still got a whole load of filing to do :-( Still with this detail and the prodmod kit, or if you are clever buying the led's yourself, you should be able to make led hoops for yourself for about £30 a hoop (bit too heavy for me though this tubing). If anyone comes across the thinner tubing I would love shout out :-)

Happy led hoop making everyone :-)

I hope no one minds..feel free to delete if you want.

I've created a group on facebook. It's targeted for hoopers in the Nottingham area, although anyone's free to join. I want to start a society at my university but it'll be open to the Nottingham community as well. I'm hoping to get it established and running as soon as, because it'd be lovely to meet other hoopers, although from tribe, I know there aren't that many Nottingham hoopers.

If you know anyone in the area or would like to join yourselves, spread the word and feel free to join. :)

The group link is http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?sid=4572d867b66563cefd84e7a0d35c38da&refurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fs.php%3Fref%3Dsearch%26init%3Dq%26q%3Dhoopsoc%26sid%3D4572d867b66563cefd84e7a0d35c38da&gid=32229652509

or search for 'HoopSoc' on Facebook

Thanks xx

Body Hoops Training - October 08

Hello!

I was unable to make the Hoopgirl training in August and have since booked myself on the BodyHoops course in October. I was just wondering if anyone else is going as I thought it might be a good idea to stay in the same hotel for practice after the first sessions. Also as I'm travelling up quite a way I'd feel more comfortable knowing there were some friendly hoopers staying in the same vicinity!

I've think I've found quite a good deal for a hotel for the 3 nights I'd need (the Thursday, Friday and Saturday night) so want to get booked up quickly before the prices change!

Can't belive I'm doing it at all as I'm still learning and am usually so lacking in confidence that I wouldn't dream of driving off and staying on my own! Power of the Hoop!!!!!

Let me know what you think :)
Sal.

This year is whizzing by - lots has been going on and the next Sunday Hoop Club is looming large on the calendar (well, on *my* calendar, at any rate!).

When? 2pm to 4pm, Sunday 5th October 2008

Why? Cuz we love hooping and want to spend two hours in a wonderful space, indulging our passion.

Cost? £5 per person (£3.50 concessions).

I'll be there with hoops and music....

... hope to see lots of familiar faces!

I can now do a bit of knee hooping. but I have some fair old bruises from it. I can't really get it going very smoothly and it eventually starts just slapping off the front of one knee and the back of the other. Even when I do it at my best it's still pretty noisy. Is that normal? Or is there a way to get it going a bit smoother? I also have the same 'slappy' problem if I hoop around my neck and under one arm.

I went to my first hulaerobics class tonight

And I don't know if it's because I'm in a foul mood... but I thought it was pretty dull. How to take the fun out of hooping! We did a standard aerobic warmup, then half a dozen aerobics moves whilst hooping (in one direction). So it was slow motion grapevines, squats and walking back and forwards. Fair enough, that's what hoopaerobics is a I suppose. It's given me a good workout - I think I'll feel it tomorrow especially since the hoop I was using was a little lighter than my current hoop so it was a bit harder work. But I was hoping for some hand hooping and hip hooping. Or even to do something with my hands while doing the grapevine. I might go next week for the discipline of doing a workout, but I can't say I'm terribly excited by it.

Anyway, came home with an urge to dance with my hoop. :-) And my ipod arrived today so now I'll have some music when outside.

what are the best things to learn?

I have been watching endless youtube videos and obviously some of the moves are far more complex than others. I can hoop in both directions, hip hoop both ways too. I can move about and dance a bit (though still haven't found my boogie properly!). I can do some hand hooping things and do a 'lift off' with both hands etc. Mostly I just potter around with it.

I just love learning new things but I'm getting a bit put off by complete failure and bumps and bruises. Thigh hooping is momentary - basically the hoop gets to my bum and falls off to my ankles! Once or twice I've caught it right and got it going for a few rotations. Neck hooping is a bit uncomfy but I'm getting there. I can dip hands in and out of the hoop but have had very little success with moving it up to my shoulders and on the occasions I've got it up I can't do a thing with it and it just drops. I'm not sure I'm cut out for chest hooping as I have gigantic boobs (seriously).

So what should I try my hand at? And any tips?

A very hard decision - which psi hoop?!?

So i have persuaded my boyfriend that spending around £150 on a hula hoop is a good idea, and he has agreed to buy me one for my birthday.
I already know that i want a PSI, but what kind? I want it to be mega bright with lots of colours. I will get the whole 24 leds, but what types and is it worth getting 2 circuits. Patrick from PSIHOOPS has sugessted 16 dragonfly and 8 elfin. But i have no idea. I was thinking 12 elfin on one curcuit and 12 dragonfly on the other, but then i think i would just have both circuits on every time i use it anyway so there is probably no point.

Also i am very happy with my 40" 20mm hoop, that is a little flexible. I want to match this as close as possible. What did everyone else get? flexible or stiff?
This is a very hard decision. I know a lot of you have already got PSIHOOPS. Please help!!!! Many thanks X X X

It's a bit 'iffy' but does the job. I used the blue piping (got it about £19 delivered for 50m) and used the connector on fancy tapes website, made it about 39" so a bit smaller than my other hoop. And some blue & green vinyl and some gaffer tape to wrap. It's a little square at one point but I think that the start of the piping was a bit squared off so I hope the next one cut will be better. And the taping is pretty rough, my 3 yr old insisted on helping me. But all in all I'm very pleased with it.

Now I just need to get some practice in. I am managing a teeny bit of thigh hooping now si I'm very pleased.
