I have been developing this idea.. and when it became public domain after I put it out there.. it took OFF. I am very excited. The ORG suggests that it cannot officially endorse it as it is too complex, but the idea has been refined since then... and would actually be late at night, and earlier in the week. I am hoping to get the word out there, and am starting now!!! any ideas, or help, or suggestions... or trolling and making fun of me, will happily be accepted!
===========
I have had the idea for years, but 07 works just too too well.
In response to the eco theme, I wanted to help create and foster a
moment of respect.. so to speak... to foster the community's
understanding that we are in a different world at burning man, but
need to come back to earth for a moment to show respect and love for
the planet. So if we can reconnect with the planet... at once, and
completely together... we can remember why we are at the burn, and
celebrating life in the first place.

Therefore... to help solidfy the connection of people together, as
well as with the earth... I suggest a massive and total lights out at
about 2:50am after tuesday, wednesday morn, during the full lunar eclipse... for about 5
minutes... so everyone can feel together, and bond and look up at the
clearest, darkest and most beautiful sky we have ever had the chance
to stand under... (and the only one we have had the chance to stand
under). SO.. everyone becomes an equal participant in the most all
encompassing moment at burning man... for us to come back to earth...
reconnect... and look up at the sky.. simply to realize what and who
we are.

Resultingly... everyone becomes a participant, having to work together
to turn off all the lights at the same time. Therefore you have the
largest art installation *EVER*... everyone participating, everyone
coming together at the same moment.... turning art into something that
creates community, bonds people, brings them out of their world (their
tent camp, their sonic stage... all of a sudden every boundary drops
and we are united under a veil of stars), and everyone into each
other's.....

*THIS* world.
Call it art or not, I call it fun and exciting!

I just Forest Gumped my way into this group. I think that this is a brilliant idea. I have always toyed with the thought of trying to make the erradication of light pollution a marketably feasible endeavor. Light pollution is often overlooked as a lesser evil in the shadow of all the other forms of pollution that present a clear and present danger to our way of life.

It saddens me to look up in the sky and see ten or twelve stars which are barely visible, our connection with the infinite is symbolically represented when one insignificant human gazes out into a sea of infinite points of light. How much have we lost due to the stadium lighting down at the local Wal-Mart?

It would be awesome to see the playa go dark during the eclipse. I would be more than happy to put some energy towards spreading the concept.

    Light : )
    • YAYAYAYAY! New happy Gumper. I dig it.

Be happy... be thoughtful.. and I will try to do the same.

We shall start convening more about this... but just spread the word the night of the eclipse at 3am (or what have you) we will power down lights and sound.

Shooting fish in a barrell really... who isn't sleeping on Monday at that time anyway? Everyone is wasted tired from setup. I think we win.

I was on the BM forums and people were so negative....

"Don't tell me what to do"

"What a weak art concept, making us do YOUR work for you. Fat Chance"

"I oppose mind and thought control in all forms"

other people went so far as to say they would shine lights and music at us.

      Some people are really unhappy.

      THANKS for your THOUGHTS ADAM!
      • Okay, how to get a bunch of people on the same page at the same moment?

Ever hear that theory that if 400,000 people would enter into an active state of meditation that the world would experience a rapid and instantaneous shifting into a higher state of consciousness? I read that on the internet somewhere so it must be true : )

How to get 50,000 people to do the same thing and not get all buttsore about being told what to do? Well, obviously we can't tell them to do anything. There must be an incentive. We would have to get the majority of people to commit to shutting down the theme park at that moment.

Let's narrow it down.... you have the people who are in charge of the camps, they can be approached individually. Then you have the people who will be zonked out of their minds on booze and drugs, they cannot be approached and must be sidestepped.

We need to figure out where all the "switches" are and who are the guardians of these switches, which would be nigh onto impossible since there are so many people doing so many things in so many different spots.

Maybe an overall campaign that centers around seeing if everyone on the Playa can get together with a singularity of purpose..?--too powerful... isn't that why people get assassinated? (I am typing this as thoughts pop into my noodle, sorry if it seems like I am licking toads)

Back to that... we could start a campaign of campaigns studying the possibility of everyone in camp doing one thing and one thing only for the briefest of moments. Can this be done? Can humans ever truly come together as one? Then as an after thought, after the dust has settled we can offer the lights out as an unrealistic goal to achieve. We must lower the bar considerably, lest people's expectations lead towards disappointment and the unconscious fear of being disappointed stop the event from having a chance.

The lights go out and Blammo!!! There is the lunar eclipse. MAGIC. ~~~~ ; )
