  What does the maker recommend? Depends on your HG and what you want to spend. Olympic instruments has page with gages for the different strings. I usually use Corelli gut strings as they are available at a local violin shop. Sometimes for the chanters I've used a synthetic core violin string.

    I personally have gut strings. But there are always some problems with pitch, especially - with upper notes....
    Some people say that it is normal. But it is not so easy - to adjust everything (tangents) today, crossing your fingers and ask hurdy-gurdy-god to make the air humidity the same tomorrow...
