I get a lot of inquiries from people wanting a cheap hg, or complaining that they can't afford a good one. This has made me wonder about people's finances. I was thinking that a discussion of budgets isn't appropriate in a hg tribe, but maybe it is, since money seems to be such a big barrier between people and the hgs they want. Money is usually a taboo subject, but I'm starting this thread anyway to see what happens.

When I bought my hg, I was making $8.16/hour. A local bank calculated that the "living wage" for that city was more like $9.83/hour. Whatever the bank said, I was certainly staying alive on $8.16, and even able to save up money for my hg, which I'm sure was not an expense included in that bank's living wage calculation.

First I paid off my student loan, and then I saved up money and bought my hg. Now, I wasn't supporting a family, and had no serious health problems, which I can see would have made it much harder to save up the money for my hg. But if you don't have major expenses like that, I'm really wondering what is stopping people from affording the hg of their dreams.

I recently got yet another inquiry, this time from someone on tribe, saying she needed to find a really cheap hg since she couldn't afford a good one. I looked at her blog, and she said that she'd just bought a great new dress, which sounded expensive. So this got me thinking about budgets.

In some self-help book I flipped through, it suggested writing down every single thing you spend money on, over some amount of time like a week or a month. Every tiny thing, every can of soda, every pack of gum, every cable bill, everything. Then add up each category (a spreadsheet would help) and ask yourself, "Do I really want to be spending $50/month on coffee?" or whatever. Then, say, if you have your heart set on a hg that costs $2000, you can easily calculate, "If I stop buying coffee like this, and instead put that money into my hg fund, there will be $2000 in that fund in 40 months, or 3 years and 4 months." For example.

I didn't actually do this exactly to get my hg, writing things down formally in a spreadsheet, but I did a little mental calculation whenever I considered buying some optional luxury. So, for example, if I considered buying some luxury for $5, I would do a little mental calculation, "If I bought something like this every day, in a year, that would eat up almost the entire cost of a nice hg. So, this particular luxury, if I make a habit of it, would push my hg almost a year further into the future." That was really good motivation for doing without that particular luxury that day, and the next day, and the next.

Luxuries I did without included, almost all the time: movies, restaurant meals, cable, air conditioning, a high thermostat in winter, internet access at home, new clothes (I occasionally bought some used), furniture (I slept on the floor), meat, fancy processed foods like breakfast cereals, and the more expensive fruits and vegetables. (At potlucks, I got a lot of complements on my "spinach" which was an assortment of freshly-collected edible weeds.) Luxuries I decided to continue paying for included: live shows, festivals, CDs, and chili pickle. Each person can make their own choices about which luxuries they choose to continue paying for, and which aren't as important as a hg.

It would be really cool if people posted on this thread, "I just calculated that if I pack a lunch instead of eating at restaurants, I'll have my hg in a year," or whatever.

Always happy to hear from other players. I have a musical background, play Middle Eastern music with my band, Americanistan, and was hoping to have my lira up and running much more quickly than this -- it's been a longer journey than I expected.

The bridge of my instrument is a little short. Don't know if it sank during shipment or what. Based on info from Alden and Callie Hackman at the OTW Hurdy Gurdy Festival, I am currently working on ways to raise it just slightly. It's just a bit too much of a gap for a shim, tried that already.

My journey to buying one has been frought with obstacles of one sort or another. And while I had settled on the idea of pursuing a domestically made HG, I accidentaly happened upon that amazing youtube video of Matthias Loibner. It opened up my mind to a range of HG sounds and the potential of the instrument and playing that I had never before heard or thought possible. And then there are those WEICHSELBAUMER instruments - especially the alto model. Well, with the weak dollar and strong Euro I am regrouping with a more aggressive "savings" plan to buy a WEICHSELBAUMER Alto.

I'm thinking of getting a fancy new super-duper hg, and I'm deciding what features it needs. What are people's opinions of the various tangent options? My current hg has the traditional friction tangents, which are generally pretty good, but they do slip occasionally. Also, I sometimes like to tune my hg with quarter-tones to play Middle Eastern music, and this puts the tangents at an extreme angle, which seems to make them more likely to slip further.

Then there are the tangents that tighten with screws, which seem more stable. What are people's opinions of these? Any drawbacks, besides the obvious one that you can't take a screwdriver on a plane?

Then there are these metal tangents by Weichselbaumer:
http://weichselbaumer.cc/images/canto02.jpg
which can be adjusted in two dimensions, and which take up very little length in the keybox, so you could fit more strings into the hg without increasing the wheel size. Sounds like a great idea to me, but does anyone here have practical experience with them? They seem to be sheathed in some sort of black plastic or something. Does that wear out, and is it replaceable?

I play my hg about 4 hours a day almost every day, so I tend to wear out parts. My wooden tangents get grooves in them from hitting the strings so often, so I have to replace them occasionally. I think that harder tangents might wear the strings out faster, though, and that isn't good either. I'm guessing that tangents should be made of some material that's no harder than wood, and should be replaceable, or, for example, those plastic sheaths on Weichselbaumer's tangents should be replaceable. Also, I'm considering a pretty low-pitched hg, with heavy, wire-wound gut strings, and I imagine that the wire is tougher on tangents, and might also be more fragile. Does anyone have experience with wire-wrapped melody strings?

By the way, if any luthiers want to send their hgs to me for destructive testing, I'm available at reasonable rates.

I held off because I was trying to keep Melissa from losing her bet with Carmine that the h-g tribe would attract less attention than his cumbus tribe, but I acceot that its a lost cause. H-G is way cooler than cumbus. Here's my two cents:
-I play a hugarian model from Nagy Balazs similar to Melissa's, and I've tried my hand at building one. Its an awful lot of work, and you have to be patient and enjoy the act of woodwroking. If you're dying to play one, you probably dont want to wait until you've built one, and the first one you build might not be fun to play. On the other hand, if you know how to work with wood, I'd say building an h-g is very forgiving, because no one really knows what they're supposed to sound like, so you cant go wrong ;)
-Nagy Balazs instruments play great and are indestructible. His new book is great too.
-Melissa (and Carmine's) recent 9/8 tune post sounds great, everyone should check it out.
-I can't sit still and play other things and have tried building other things.
I'm Peter and glad I found this tribe.
I'm gurdist and hurdist for few years now and would love to share some info with others.
First of all, sorry for being so grumpy but I found a post about using tampons or "cotton" balls - well - I must say that none of those is comparable to real pure cotton. I know it is hard to find that one but I bought quarter kilo years ago from one of UK textile companies and msut say that using cotton balls from hemist before was a debauchery and desacration of tha tbeautiful isntrument. If anyone interested i can post some details and you can buy those "cotton sleeves" online from them. PLEASE: do not use tampons for HG!!! thanks.....

SO if we settled the cotton thingy: I live in AU and sometimes its really hot here. Anyone got an idea for perfect rosin for hot weather? last summer was 35 and rosin was literally melted around the wheel.....

BTW2: anyone tried to use guitar nylon strings for bourdons??? not yet??? I strongly recommend to experiment with those - some bass guitar strings are nicely balanced and very soft sounding - ideal for drones......

I'm looking forward to hear from you guys, and happy to join your tribe...

BTW3: if anyone interested: www.umanee.com - thats my band with some samples :-)))

cheers
Burning of the Temple: I wrote this a while ago, and recorded it on my CD, but now I'm taking it apart and opening it to improvisation again, and it's growing. I love this band! It's so much fun to improvise with them.

I also play in a few bands, including the New England contra dance bands Jiggermeister and Mockin'bird, the Balkan dance band Svraka, and most recently as a special guest in the belly dance band Djinn. I have oodles of fun with my hg. It's engrossing enough that my other instruments have been sadly neglected recently. I have sound samples from my latest CD on my website:

OK, I'll charge right in and start the first real hg topic on this tribe. What kind of rosin do you use? I'd been using some of that violin/viola/cello rosin that comes in a wooden block, but Balazs strongly disapproved of the wooden block in his workshop in Boston this spring, so I cut the wood part off and just used the hunk of rosin. I think that does allow a more even application, without the wood getting in the way.

Then I tried a round cake of cello rosin, and I think I like it a bit better, as it seems a bit stickier.

I've been busking where it's quite cold, and I've noticed that the cold weather seems to make the rosin less sticky, so I get high whistling harmonics at the beginning of every note, as if I don't have enough rosin on. I saw some rosin in a catalog that was meant for bass, in summer and winter varieties. I'd imagine the winter bass rosin would be very gluey, so I'm thinking maybe that would work on my hg in cold weather. Thoughts?

I just thought I'd share the secret of the best hg cotton: OB brand tampons. I would not have discovered this myself, but that's what Balazs Nagy uses on his hgs, and I've found that it works much better than cotton balls, which are too lumpy to apply neatly, or even the nice combed Egyptian cotton I got from a craft supply place, which was too silky and not grabby enough.

It's mostly actual cotton from a cotton plant, but I think it also has some rayon or something in it. Whatever it is, it works.
